He wrote in both English and French. His work offers a bleak, tragicomic outlook on human nature, often coupled with black comedy and gallows humour.
Beckett is widely regarded as among the most influential writers of the 20th century. Strongly influenced by James Joyce, he is considered one of the last modernists. As an inspiration to many later writers, he is also sometimes considered one of the first postmodernists. He is one of the key writers in what Martin Esslin called the "Theatre of the Absurd". His work became increasingly minimalist in his later career.

All That Fall: A Play for Radio, Samuel Beckett
All That Fall is a one-act radio play by Samuel Beckett produced following a request from the BBC. It was written in English and completed in September 1956. The autograph copy is titled Lovely Day for the Races.
The stationmaster, Mr Barrell, asks after Mrs Rooney's health. She confesses that she should really still be in bed.
We hear of the demise of Mr Barrell's father, who died shortly after retiring, a tale that reminds Maddy again of her own woes. She notes that the weather has taken a change for the worse; the wind is picking up and rain is due.
Miss Fitt approaches so immersed in humming a hymn she doesn鈥檛 see Maddy at first. Miss Fitt, as her name indicates, is a self-righteous misfit. After some discussion she condescends to help the old woman up the stairs to the platform, primarily because "it is the Protestant thing to do."
Unusually the train is late. The noise of the station becomes louder but the eventual is an anticlimax; it is the oft-mentioned up mail.
Dan's train comes in moments afterwards. Maddy panics. She can鈥檛 find her husband because he has been led to the gents by Jerry, the boy who normally helps him to the taxi.
Tightfisted Dan chides her for not cancelling Jerry but still pays his penny fee. He refuses however to discuss the reason for the train's lateness. Not without some difficulty 鈥� her husband is also not a well man 鈥� they descend the stairs and begin the trek home. ...

Cheguei at茅 鈥淎ll That Fall鈥� atrav茅s de Elena Ferrante, que se socorre desta pe莽a no segundo volume da saga 鈥淎 Amiga Genial鈥� para lan莽ar uma discuss茫o existencial entre Lenu, Lila e Nino. Ferrante fixa a conversa em redor de um dos m煤ltiplos pontos discutidos na pe莽a, e apesar de ser algo fugaz 茅 provavelmente uma das partes mais relevantes da pe莽a, j谩 que se liga diretamente ao modo como Beckett desejava que a pe莽a fosse experienciada.
鈥淎ll That Fall鈥� foi criada como audio drama, uma pe莽a dram谩tica para r谩dio. V谩rios foram os criadores que procuraram Beckett para realizar adapta莽玫es para palco, entre os quais Ingmar Bergman e Laurence Olivier, mas sempre, ou quase sempre, recusadas por Beckett. Dizia ele:
鈥淓ven the reduced visual dimension it will receive from the simplest and most static of readings (..) will be destructive of whatever quality it may have and which depends on the whole thing's coming out of the dark." (fonte)
Ou seja, 鈥淎ll That Fall鈥� baseia a cria莽茫o e comunica莽茫o da experi锚ncia na forma do medium. Um dos personagens 茅 cego, da铆 que toda a pe莽a seja constru铆da para o sentido da audi莽茫o por meio dos di谩logos, m煤sica e efeitos sonoros. Cabe ao recetor recriar mentalmente os cen谩rios, espa莽os e cores. E aqui chego ao destaque realizado por Ferrante, e que me parece ser aquele que verdadeiramente justifica a obstina莽茫o de Beckett quanto 脿 n茫o adapta莽茫o para palco.

O velho e eterno dilema dos sentidos, t茫o discutido por S贸crates e Plat茫o, sobre o modo como estes deturpam a realidade que nos chega, impossibilitando-nos de aceder 脿 pura verdade. A realidade n茫o 茅 poss铆vel atrav茅s do modo sens铆vel, dizia Plat茫o, tendo por isso defendido a erradica莽茫o das artes da Rep煤blica. A elabora莽茫o de Ferrante 茅 distinta, j谩 que procura um enaltecer da desist锚ncia existencialista da realidade perceptiva, ou seja, uma fuga 脿s dores e obst谩culos que a vida nos vai colocando na frente. J谩 Beckett pelo contr谩rio est谩 mais preocupado em encontrar distintas possibilidades de aceder ao belo, servindo este di谩logo num extremar dessa busca.
A pe莽a tem sido bastante trabalhada em ambiente escolar dada a sua imensa expressividade, nomeadamente simb贸lica. Deixo aqui uma liga莽茫o que vale a pena explorar para quem pretenda trabalhar a pe莽a nesses ambientes. Too short for me to appreciate. Samuel Beckett, in my opinion, is for main course and not very good as a dessert. In the first place, he did not even write sweetly. All of his works, as far as those I've read so far, are darkly-themed and too cerebral devoid of any sugary phrase not even a word.
Unlike (3 stars) and (3 stars) that Beckett written for stage, All That Fall was one of his radio plays. In 1956, BBC requested him to write a play for radio and so he wrote this. After a few days, he succumbed to depression that he had to postpone his trip to Paris for a week.
This could be the shortest work of Beckett that I've read but it is one that is the most accessible. Maybe because this was written for radio listeners, the plot is solid and realistic. This is about Maddy a fat 70ish English lady whose husband Dan is celebrating his birthday and so instead of waiting for him at home, Maddy thought of giving him a surprise by picking him up from the office. Along the way, the fat Maddy meets three male characters and that is what the play is all about.
I wonder how the play went. There is classical music that has to be played in the background and I am sure it would be nice to hear it with readers delivering their lines with English clipped accent.
I was very busy last week I did not have time to write reviews. Today is Saturday here in Manila and I just finished writing 5 reviews and now my eyes are tired so I have to stop and resume reading.

An accessible but somewhat dated short play meant as a play for the radio. I read it while listening to the radio recordings. A mix between comedy and tragedy. Not quite my taste but I liked it. The elements and themes were pretty obvious (death, faith, modernisation, ageing (or rather decaying, pining away), relationships and the meaninglessness of life). It starts off humoristic and gets more grim and disillusioned along the way.
My overall conclusion is that you will not miss anything nor gain anything by reading this or not reading this. You won't really waste your time as our lives are filled with meaningless seconds, minutes, hours waiting for death anyway, and you will not gain anything either because of the inevitable decay and death that awaits. I would recommend listening as the soundeffects are exaggerated which adds an extra dimension to the play, making it artificial/surrealistic to me.
