A pop-up book for Love Bugs of all ages looks like a box of valentine chocolates with its heart shape--and sits nicely on a shelf--but it is perfect for gift givers of any age on all occasions.
David A. Carter is a master paper engineer and creator of the Bugs series, which has sold more than 6 million copies. Also the author and illustrator of the critically acclaimed Color series, featuring One Red Dot, Blue 2, 600 Black Spots, Yellow Square, and White Noise, he lives in Auburn, California, with his wife and two daughters.
First of all this is shaped like a little heart valentine that fits in your hand. It’s tiny. It opens and the pop-ups come out of this little heart. There is foil on the front in the red to make it look very fancy. It’s such a cute book and it is very fancy.
This is some sugar overload in a great way. It ends with “will you be my love buy? My favorite bug is the love bug because it has a beak at the middle of the pop-out and it opens and closes. I love that artwork. This book makes me happy, so I love it.
The kids thought it was fun too. The nephew spent 10 minutes looking through it over and over and he gave it 5 stars. The niece thought it was really cute and she gave it 4 stars. What do you know.
I may not have my own Love Bug these days but this is a delightful book with stunningly designed pop-ups.
The few words are simple but they say a lot, culminating with 'Because I love you as I do ... a dozen Rosebugs just for you. Will you be my Love Bug?'
Sentimentalist I may be but, Linda you are still my Love Bug and this book has been bought, and read, in your memory!

... and read again and loved it just as much!
I have been trying to tidy up my books and see exactly what I have and came across this delightfully created moveable pop-up book so knowing its history, I just had to read it again. My sentiments in the original review still apply and I notice I even wrote a message to append with a post-it to the back cover. I feel sure you will realise the gist of the message!
I have often loaned this out to many other librarians for Valentine's Day storytime themes. For once it was on my shelf, so I chose it to read in my Movement Storytime Valentine's theme. It's short (which works since a couple of my songs were longer). And I was able to get them involved. And what child doesn't love Pop Ups?
Maddie loves this book. She keeps opening up the pages with a big ta-da. And since they made love bug crowns at preschool, she’s got that on to read it. These are some of the best pop-ups I’ve seen.
Read this today at work to Kindergartners for outreach and it was nice. A little shorter than most of the other bug pop ups by Carter, but the kids still really enjoyed it.
I've purchased almost every title in this series and have yet to be disappointed by any of them. My 8-year old son requests to read them again and again and again, and now that he's reading on his own - likes to read them to himself.
Now that he's older, he is also very careful not to tear the pop-ups, but I've got to admit that there are a few titles we've bought more than once. He probably got his first pop-up book at the age of two - and although the pop-ups are quite sturdy and made for little hands to enjoy - he did manage to tear a few of them. I think this is inevitable if you want to introduce your child to pop-up books at an early age, and since the pop-up books in this series are reasonably priced - I've been more than happy to replace the ones he was a little "too hands-on" with!
What do we like about the pop-ups? Each one is a work of art - you are never disappointed when you turn the page. The pop-ups are cute, colorful, creative, and most of all - FUN. The accompanying text on each page is also good - funny rhymes, silly sayings, and sometimes even a sing-a-long song.
Of all the pop-up books we own (and we probably have fifty or more - some dating back to the thirties and forties) these are the ones we enjoy the most. We've also bought several to give as gifts to my son's friends.
Our other favorites are those by Robert Sabuda & Matthew Reinhart and there are also some excellent Harry Potter & Star Wars pop-up books if you're a fan of either of those series.
I love this book! My children loved this book. I would always act like the love bug was going to get them as I fanned the book back and forth toward them. They would laugh and giggle. Its a fun book to keep them hanging on your every word.
I love Carter's pop up books! I have used them for years in my story times with great success. Kids love them, with the exception of one little girl who was terrified by these "bugs"! It still makes me laugh! This book is wonderful for Valentine's day. So sweet!
All of the 'bug' books are wonderful pop-up books. I have a collection of all of them. They are supposed to be children's books, and while my daughters did enjoy them, I've kept them for me!
I thought this might be our last year with Love Bugs, but it’s actually still a solid choice, even for 6 year old Kait. The pop-ups are so impressive.
NOT so in love with the text, but the gorgeous pop-ups and silly bugs more than make up for it. A great addition to your Valentine books or to your collection of Carter's other bug pop-up books.
