can do no wrong in my eyes! I love both his WeirDo and Hot Dog! series, and his new series, Ninja Kid, is even more fun. Nelson Kane is a nerd. He lives on a junkyard with his Mum, Grandma Pat and cousin Kenny.
His Mum works as a cleaner because the junkyard isn’t doing that well and given the amount of food cousin Kenny can put away in his ultra skinny frame, he’s probably eating for five. Nelson’s Dad was a fisherman who sadly was lost at sea.
Grandma Pat is one of the coolest grannies around. She’s an inventor whose inventions work really well - sometimes. It’s handy that this grannie lives in a junkyard because all of this random stuff, including the kitchen sink, is at her disposal when she’s in invention mode, which seems to be all the time.
She looks to me like a caricature of actress Linda Hunt. She’s the school principal who at 1.45m (4� 9�) stands up to Arnie with her, “I’m watching you!� in Kindergarten Cop. I love that movie! You may know her from something slightly more recent, like NCIS: Los Angeles.
Anyway, imagine a mad scientist grannie with a lab coat, fluffy bunny slippers, a tooth (yes, just the one that I saw), hair up in a messy bun with a wrench poking out in one spot and a critter that may well be the Loch Ness Monster poking out somewhere else. I’m sure Nessie will be identified in some later book as a mouse or something to that effect, but until it’s identified I want it to be Nessie.
So, nerdy Nelson wakes up on his tenth birthday to a spider perched on his nose. He proceeds to jump/fall out of bed and instead of falling flat on his face like he usually would, he does some impressive acrobatics and lands on his feet. 🤔 Then he realises he no longer needs his glasses as he can see perfectly without them. 🤔🤔
As luck would have it today is the day he finds out he’s a ninja, likely the only one on the planet, and that’s going to come with some responsibility. But, shh! Don’t tell anyone because it’s a secret right now! 🤫
Before this book is over you’ll encounter a bully, plenty of bananas, more bug spray than you’ve likely ever seen and a giant thong. Oh, for those of you wondering what a thong is doing in a kid’s book, in Australia thongs are what you call flip flops, not what you were thinking of.
Jeremy Ley’s illustrations are so, so brilliant! The cover image gives you a preview of what’s to come. There are pictures on most pages and they’re simply awesome! The story comes alive in them and their humour mirrors that of the story. I don’t know how much interaction authors and illustrators have but these guys are on the same page in this book (in all possible ways).
As usual ’s writing has funny bits suitable for kids and adults, the family has interesting quirks, the story hooks you straight away and you finish the book wishing you had the next one beside you to start reading immediately.
Reader Beware: You will encounter a cliffhanger. While technically you could finish this book and be done you won’t want to be. If Anh’s other series are anything to go by there won’t be a dud among them and I can’t wait for the next one!

This is pretty hilarious 😂!! Sometimes children’s books hit and other times you leave you wanting this was an entire vibe !! Our MC goes from being a nerd to a flipping ninja 🥷!! What more could you want ?

Exciting, fun, and with a bit of foreshadowing in there as well. My 4-year-old loves this so much, even though it’s more suited for older children. This series will probably become a regular, and we’ll definitely be using this for reading practice when the time comes!👌

Nelson Kane lives in a junkyard with his mum, weird inventor grandma and cousin Kenny. When he wakes on his 10th birthday, he has no idea his whole world is about to change.
Nelson is a klutz, petrified of spiders and has often been in tricky situations with Grandma’s gadgets. But today is different. Mum and Grandma have something to tell him. He is a ninja, just like his father before him. Nelson is in shock, but has to step up to his new skills as his town is attacked by mutant spiders!
Any fans of The Bad Guys, Pirate Blunderbeard and Pocket Pirates Series will love this fun format full of B & W Illustrations.

Ninja Kid is great book for children from the ages of 7+
I grabbed this for my son when it was first out and recommended at QBD.
My son adored it! so I thought I would give it a quick read myself!
Its very very funny!
the language level is great for children to practice or learn new words.

Henry's review: I think it sucked there's was litte details, and some of the details just came and gone, so ya, that's why it sucked also I think it is for younger kids. that is how my 9 year old son reviewed it

“Момчет� нинджа”� чисто забавление без никакви особени претенции. Историята на невзрачния Нелсън Кейн е колкото предвидима, толкова и симпатична. Навярно всяко дете мечтае един ден да се окаже герой със суперсили и винаги е готово да съпреживее подобна история чрез книга. В случая допълнителен плюс са симпатичните второстепенни герои като откачената баба изобретателка и вечно гладният братовчед Кени, който макар и досаден, съвсем не е страхлив.

Ninjas, uitvindingen, familiegeheimen, hongerige vrienden, een verjaardag, en meer! Een heerlijk boek!
WAUW! Dit was gewoonweg geweldig! Ik moet meer van deze serie hebben! Hopelijk kan ik ooit boek 2 lezen, zo jammer alleen dat de Engelse delen bijna niet te vinden zijn (of ontzettend duur) anders had ik die meteen gekocht.
Dit boek gaat over Nelson een jongen die normaal altijd erg klunzig is, maar nu op zijn 10de verjaardag opeens heel anders is. Hij is een ninja! Net als zijn vader! Zo springt hij uit zijn bed met een geweldige beweging, hij vangt eten op zonder moeite. Samen met zijn gave oma (echt die vrouw is fantastisch en ze maakt allerlei leuke uitvindingen (al kun je al raden dat er een flink aantal zijn die je niet wilt uitproberen)) en zijn altijd hongerige vriend gaat hij uitvinden hoe hij een ninja kan zijn. Want tja, het is nou niet zo dat je zomaar eventjes ninja wordt. Ja, je bent wel anders, maar je moet alles nog helemaal verfijnen en verbeteren. Je moet oefenen. Ik moest wel lachen dat hij de banaan wel raakte maar niet de blikjes bij zijn eerste poging.
Dan zijn er slechterikken (en grote spinnen, HELE GROTE SPINNEN), er zijn ongelukjes, er is veel eten, en bergen humor en hilariteit. Je zult echt dubbel liggen.
Ik vond het alleen jammer dat er ook nog een pestkop was en dat het weer een rijke stinkerd was.
En dan is er nog het einde wat een cliffhanger was (al had ik het ergens wel verwacht dat die slechterik die persoon was). Al wil ik nu het volgende boek omdat ik meer over de situatie wil weten.
Het boek is ook heerlijk geillustreerd, echt een leuke stijl. Ik heb echt genoten van de illustraties, ze maken het verhaal nog leuker om te lezen.
Aanrader! Echt een grote aanrader!

Den här boken har både sina för- och nackdelar. Bilderna är många och hysteriskt roliga. Texten är stor och det i kombon med alla bilder gör att vi har en bok att ge kids som vill ha "en tjock bok med lite text". Storyn är... inte jättebra. Inte heller fruktansvärt dålig men hade det inte varit för bilderna vet jag inte om jag hade rekommenderat denna till kidsen.
Boken handlar om Nelsen som på sin tionde födelsedag upptäcker att han har ninjakrafter. Han får veta att hans sedan länge döda far var en ninja och att han har ärvt hans förmågor och därför är han nu den sista ninjan i världen. Med hjälp av en uppfinnarmormor och sin kusin Kenny ger sig Nelson på sitt första uppdrag. Att besegra ett gäng muterade jättespindlar.

Nelson vaknar upp på sin tionde födelsedag och känner sig annorlunda. Han ser otroligt bra och behöver inte använda sina glasögon. Det dagliga snubblandet över allt och inget slutar med en perfekt volt. Mamma och mormor är inte överraskade då Nelsons pappa var "den sista ninjan".
Ytterst roande att lyssna på som ljudbok med Anton Körberg men annars finns det bättre böcker med liknande tema för barn.

Read with my five year old, he thoroughly enjoyed it. Illustrations complement the story and are good for engaging younger readers, emphasised words across the text are also a good early literacy reading prompt. The story is fun and engaging and ends with a compelling lead into the next book. Highly recommend.

Докато привършвах поредната книга за хлапета от една поредица с нинджи, ми попадна информация за тази. Настройката си беше на линия, така че реших да ѝ хвърля едно око. Нека първо смъкнем възрастта на аудиторията, за която е предназначена, макар моя милост да е вече на повече от три десетилетия от нея. Хлапакът Нелсън току-що е направил десет години и е редно да влезем в неговия свят, обкръжен от неувереност и подозрение към собствените възможности. Едва ли всички сме били смелчаци, макар повечето деца да са изпълнени с любопитство. „Момчет� нинджа� („Кръг�, 2019, с превод на Юлия Спиридонова � Юлка) съвсем определено е написана, за да вдъхва сили и освобождава мечтите. Съвсем малко самочувствие върши чудеса, нали така? Ан Доу ми беше непознат до този момент, но винаги е приятно да научиш, че някой се е заел да създаде цяла поредица с главен герой извън средностатистическите лудетини в училище. Смотльото, който става нинджа! Това определено е приключение, което заслужава да се прочете.

Read this fun book and put it directly into the hands of a 4th grader in the library. A PERFECT bridging book for those who love graphic novels as it has pictures but more text and is just awesome. Nelson is not really good at anything and is super clumsy--until, that is, he wakes up on his 10th birthday and is told he is a ninja. Everything changes! He also finds out that his dad who left a long time ago was also a ninja, which will play into the series. Can't wait to order more of these for the library.

Nelson es un chico de diez años que se destaca por ser torpe y un debilucho, siempre esta pasándole pequeños accidentesy cuando se despierta en el día de su cumpleaños puede notar algunos cambios en el y lo que más le ha sorprendido es que no ha necesitado sus lentes para poder ver y que al caerse ha tenido reflejos y no se ha golpeado.
Nelson es un chico que siempre está acompañado de su primo Kenny, el que siempre está pensando en comida y lo acompaña a todos lados. Ellos dos junto a la madre de Nelson y su abuela vive en un vertedero que siempre está lleno de cosas que le son de mucha ayuda asu abuela que siempre está haciendo pequeños inventos y que disfrutan probarlos y tener experiencias divertidas debido a las pequeñas fallas que tienen estos artefactos.
Nelson preferiría no perder el tiempo yendo a una excursión al bosque por parte de su escuela, además de que como en la mayoría de los casos en esta también hay un bravucón y siempre está molestando a Nelson y su primo, sin embargo, estos dos siempre tratan de ignorarlo. La abuela Pat esta curiosa por los cambios en Nelson y espera entrenarlo cada día ahora que él sabe el secreto de su familia y del paradero de su padre, con la ayuda de sus pequeños artilugios y en las nuevas habilidades de Nelson ayudaran a la ciudad de un ataque de insectos nada comunes y su primo Kenny estará para ayudarlo.
Necesitan conseguir este libro porque una vez lo tomas ya no lo sueltas y te deja con ganas de seguir descubriendo las aventuras que tiene nuestro protagonista, espero pronto pueda salir la segunda parte porque me ha encantado cada página de esta historia.

Nelson es un chico de diez años que se destaca por ser torpe y un debilucho, siempre esta pasándole pequeños accidentesy cuando se despierta en el día de su cumpleaños puede notar algunos cambios en el y lo que más le ha sorprendido es que no ha necesitado sus lentes para poder ver y que al caerse ha tenido reflejos y no se ha golpeado.
Nelson es un chico que siempre está acompañado de su primo Kenny, el que siempre está pensando en comida y lo acompaña a todos lados. Ellos dos junto a la madre de Nelson y su abuela vive en un vertedero que siempre está lleno de cosas que le son de mucha ayuda asu abuela que siempre está haciendo pequeños inventos y que disfrutan probarlos y tener experiencias divertidas debido a las pequeñas fallas que tienen estos artefactos.
Nelson preferiría no perder el tiempo yendo a una excursión al bosque por parte de su escuela, además de que como en la mayoría de los casos en esta también hay un bravucón y siempre está molestando a Nelson y su primo, sin embargo, estos dos siempre tratan de ignorarlo. Ninja Kid-volumul 1
Nelson este un băiat de 10 ani cu o stima de sine scăzută, se simte neputincios, stângaci, tocilar...dar cu ajutorul bunicii Pat, a mamei sale, al vărului Kenny precum și a dobândirii calităților de ninja, aceste lucruri urmează să se schimbe, dar pentru acest lucru trebuie să aibe încredere în el.
"Nu pot să fiu ninja! Sunt cea mai neputincioasa persoană pe care o cunosc!...Puterea unui om nu sta în mușchii lui,ci aici! Și si-a dus ușor arătătorul spre cap...(bunica Pat)
..............tu ești un băiat foarte puternic, Nelson, a adăugat ea..de multe ori, oamenii renunță prea ușor și nu-și dau seama că și-ar descoperi o mare putere dacă n-ar înceta să se străduiască . Iar strădania vine din interiorul tău.
Se pare că nu este singura lui problemă, el este supus și bullying-ului, deseori fiind ironizat de Charles.
Mi-au plăcut îndemnele, povețele oferite de mamă, de bunică , precum și evoluția copilului. (Schimbarea stă în noi, trebuie să avem încredere în forțele noastre, să nu renunțăm).
O carte amuzantă, educativă potrivită pentru vârstă de 6+

Fun. Characters are very likeable.
Setup beautifully to make things work naturally: having a grandma who makes inventions to sell in order to make ends meet while living in a scrapyard can provide just the right tools for a ninja; getting large sized sweaters for a birthday and needing to shrink them down while having a dryer microwave/washing machine that can inadvertently do just that and later on needing a shrink gun are just some examples of how the writer is able to tie things neatly into place.
The cousin/sidekick who is always hungry and eating has just the right amount of interactions / comments and timing to keep things light and funny without the character feeling forced and intrusive.
Could be improved by dropping the self doubt questions being spelled out as they are already well implied (i.e. what if I let everyone down?). Also the use of the heater torch on the solar shoes felt a little forced. Might have been better if the kid was just smart enough to turn around so he’d still be heading in the right direction even while running backwards.
The sock-mask lol. And then the glove-mask. Lol.
Illustrations fit perfectly.

Nerdy Nelson Kane lives with his Mom, Grandma, and cousin Kenny in a junkyard. When he turns 10, weird things start to happen. His eyesight becomes perfect over night. He can do ninja-like moves without trying. And a small spider becomes a giant evil nemesis. Luckily Nelson’s Grandma is an inventor, using odds and ends from the junkyard to create weird contraptions, like solar powered running shoes and a supersonic microwave clothes dryer. To help him realize his destiny, she gives him her finest invention: a special backpack with electrical outlets in it. Little does he know how soon he will need it, as a class trip to a forest turns into a frantic fight involving the giant evil spider. Bullies, poverty, and cryptic mentions of Nelson’s missing father amp up the relatability of this action packed story. There is black and white comic book art on every page and lots of bolded text to emphasize wild happenings. The first of a proposed series.

Nerdy Nelson Kane wakes up on his tenth birthday, scared by the spider on his nose and surprised that he might suddenly not be so nerdy. With the help of his inventor grandma and his hungry cousin, Nelson faces his new responsibility of protecting the world.
Waking up with sudden powers would be both incredible and frightening, and readers get to see both sides of that with the appearance of Nelson’s genetic birthday present. Silliness seems to be the name of the story. Everything goes, and the weird part is that sudden powers are the only thing treated as odd; everything else is taken in stride. Ley’s illustrations complement the story and its ridiculousness perfectly.
Nelson, his family, and everyone else in town appear to be White in the illustrations.
