Three hearts. Two worlds. No limits.

Tyran and Ket are on a mission. Find an inhabitable planet. Start a new colony. Escape the archaic rules and traditions of the Vardarian homeworld. They never expected to find their mate along the way, and they never imagined she’d be a diminutive human female with pink hair and a warrior’s spirit.

Phaedra Kari has been called a lot of things in her life: trouble, cyber-jockey, lunatic, hacker, but never someone’s mate - not until an alien prince and his best friend arrive at the Drift. She’s got plans of her own, and they don’t include mating anyone, not even a pair of gorgeous aliens whose every touch tempts her to say yes.

When corporate backstabbing progresses to real-life murder, these three will need to come together to ensure the survival of their plans, their friends, and each other.

Susan lives out on the Canadian west coast surrounded by open water, dear family and good friends. She’s jumped out of perfectly good airplanes on purpose and accidentally swum with sharks on the Great Barrier Reef. If the world ends, she plans to survive as the spunky, comedic sidekick to the heroes of the new world, because she’s too damned short and out of shape to make it on her own for long.

** A sort-of Galloping Abs Society special **

The GASpod gals decided to read the fourth book in this series for one of our episodes (because it was free on Amazon at the time, which is one of our requirements), and I ended up going on a binge reading the rest of the series in order. So, here we are at book 5, and I have a lot of feelings to discuss.

** POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD (I have hidden what I consider spoilers but just in case, you have been warned) **

The bad: the romance in this book between the two hot alien men and their “chosen pheromone lady is so forced that it’s painful to read, particularly because it feels like Phaedra is almost drugged or compelled to be with them whether she wants it or not. It feels wrong. I hate it. It almost made this book unreadable for me. Particularly in the beginning, they have nothing in common and absolutely no chemistry. Possessive, overprotective men are a theme in this whole series and I know that the other GASpod ladies had lots of issues with this when they were reading Three of a Kind, but I honestly was (mostly) okay with it until this book.

Now, this could in part be because Phaedra is still one of my favorite characters in this series, and I really just expected better for her. She’s spunky, snarky, incredibly talented and just an all around winner in my book. She lives on the go and on her own for good reasons and doesn’t let rules get in the way of her getting the information she wants to help the people she cares about. I was really looking forward to reading her story. However, we don’t really get to see much of her in “cyber-action and we don’t get to learn more about her enemies or her past. Boo.

I was also really disappointed that one of the most interesting aspects of the plot for me was done completely off screen and before this book even started. It would have been SO MUCH MORE INTERESTING to me if the book had revolved around that plot and she had gotten involved with one, two, or however many of the IAF officers she traveled with. The whole “alien smell chosen one with no choice for you thing was just. Ugh. I can’t.

description

Also, the word mate. Can we stop. Just stop. I hate it. Like, gagging level hate. Use partner. Lover. Literally anything else. Please. I get that they’re aliens, but there are so many alien species involved in these books that to me it just seemed like an attempt to make them more “other, while pretty much everything else about them was humanoid/like every other species. They even had the same technology, just “better versions of it.

The sex - it was okay, but not my favorite in the series. That’s all I have to say about that.

Finally - the ending. It just felt rushed. Nothing really felt resolved for me. I wanted more cyber-hacking, information gathering, etc., and the most interesting bombshell happened at the end with no resolution or forward momentum. Since the next books obviously are about other characters, it would have been really interesting to have more of Phaedra’s side of delving into the complexities of the situation. Instead we mostly just have her getting yelled at every time she does what she’s good at (until the end when they’re finally like “Okay I guess we’ll let you make your own decisions about your own life).

The good :

On that note - most if not all of the characters in all these books are fun. I’m enjoying them. They are snarky, the books have strong independent women and while the men are possessive they do stop and work through their problems with their chosen partners in an adult way. They have interesting backstories and (usually) have decent reasons for the decisions that they make. You also learn a lot about the world through the character’s backstories, which is interesting and fleshes out the plot.

The sci-fi elements in this series are what has kept me going. The world is interesting and the intrigue, politics, etc, I think are reasonably well thought out and engaging. I love The Drift and the backstory behind it and I love learning more about the events that lead up to where we are now. The end of the books usually have some kind of realization or bombshell about the world or what is going on that builds on what happened in the previous books and also helps us to understand what both happened before and what is happening now. Ultimately this is what has me going back for more - I just need to know (the romance helps too).

I’m still going to read the next books and probably finish the series, and maybe I’m going too hard on paranormal romance because in reality I just want to be reading mostly sci-fi with some hot sex and emotional romance. Some of the other books have been that for me and others haven’t. We’ll see where the rest of the series takes us. Also, this is the first review I’ve written for these books even though I’ve read the previous four, and I am planning on going back and writing a review for most if not all of them because I am actually enjoying these books, despite my griping.

---

Note about my rating system: 1 star - Didn’t finish, terrible, burn it all down. 2 stars - Finished it, wouldn’t recommend, barely made it through. 3 stars - Finished it, enjoyed it, probably won’t re-read but had a good time. 4 stars - Loved it, awesome, would recommend. Probably will re-read. 5 stars - What are you doing reading this? Go buy this book now and read it over and over again until you have it memorized. Comfort book, this is the bestest, 10/10 would recommend.

This book is technically 2.5 stars but I’m rounding up because I feel like it - it drove the plot forward and I still really want to know what happens next.

The brilliant hacker and sexy bodyguards trope moves into sci-fi romance, with the addition of m-f-m menage, and the hunky aliens have wings. One is also a prince. It should have been silly, but the world-building and backstory are well-crafted, the characters multi-dimensional if a bit predictable, and the plot twists and turns keep the reader guessing.

Well written!

I downloaded this book during a free promo.
A scout ship is on a mission to find various races where Beech and Try meet Phae.
However the book is from a series but can be read as a standalone SciFi steamy romance.

This was _Not_ the ménage I signed up for....

Ok, as far as a story goes I guess it plot and construction it was ok.... I thought for most of the story my biggest complaint was going to be the heroine ..
I found her prickly and hypersensitive and rather hypocritical ...
I call it hypocritical when ever a character demands things and gets very easily offended by things they DON’T offer in return,at least not easily ,at least not w/out prompting that is ,because they seem to lack either the self awareness to realize it or they’re too selfish to see it or both... honestly here I think it was a bit of both ...
Phera is used to mainly flying solo and only really answering to herself... ok,ok I can get that but when the subject of being someone’s “fated mate comes into play, well ...
Well she coulda and shoulda tried a lot harder to start thinking about someone other then herself...
Right from the get go she’s quickly and very easily offended if they worded anything as anything other then a request and quickly becomes upset w/them ... she doesn’t easily stop and think w/being angry that all of this is different and possibly difficult for them as well, especially Tyr being a prince and not being used to have to ask permissions and say please...
Even though at times she knows it’s more her own personal baggage at play than them disrespecting her or not trusting her, she’s still a shoot first ask questions later kinda girl...
For me I thought Phe started out ok ish, more open and honest ,asking questions and such, but then she for chapters ran from them w/out explanation, not thinking about what the effect it may have on the men, only giving into their need for her when her life was threatened.....
I gotta say while I tried to understand, as a die hard romantic who’d dearly love to have two gorgeous men wanting to love and protect me ,I just couldn’t relate.... and though I don’t think I have a submissive bone in my body and am rather independent myself , I found her to be prickly just for the sake of it at times and the ONE time I would have liked her to disagree with her men,she of course did not....

Sadly the title of my review comes not from my dislike of the heroine but this writer going somewhere in a ménage I’d thought and hoped she never would....
This is _Not_ a M/F/M ménage..... from what I’ve witnessed she normally writes... Since I’ve started reading Ms. Hayes back with her 3013 series days her menages or RH books have never contained m/m or even hinted at it, I thought that meant she was a safe place for me... I’m not into m/m.... m/m just isn’t my thing.... and while soo many writers and readers act like do three or more ppl to be together they must all be sexually and romantically linked.. BS, I say.... all those “sister wives aren’t all doing each other on nights the man they share is in another wives bed.. if that man doesn’t have to share why the hades should us women lucky/blessed enough to be in position have to ? If men can be selfish , why the frax can’t we ? And if a writer wants to take their story in that direction that’s their choice of course but... but we as readers should be informed about that choice soo we can make one Not to read if m/m isn’t out thing... to be hit w/it over 1/2 thru the story really isn’t fair... to get emotionally invested then hit w/one of the last things we want in our books can be really upsetting if it’s not what you want or something your not into to...
Wary from now on...

Entertaining book..

This is the first book I've read in this series, I decided to give it a try when I can across it for free. Though in some places I was a bit confused because I didn't know the background, this book can be enjoyed as a standalone.

I enjoyed all the characters and interactions between them all so I will most likely start the series from the beginning. I was a little saddened by the lack of heat. I thought with it being labeled as a MMF it would be steamy but there was only one scene where the men interacted and it didn't even go far really. Aside from that, the book had a lot of action, suspense, friendship, love, and some sadness. All in all, very entertaining.

A good sci-fi romance, showing a balance between insta-love and developing a healthy relationship. Mixing an ongoing story about corporations, governments, civilians, and conspiracy with the stand-alone romance in a science fiction setting.

Not super-complicated, worldbuilding is comfortable alien-romance with shadowy self-interests. Some uniqueness with introducing a new government into the established mix (number 5 in a series) with first contact, and the ongoing uniqueness of the cyborg and nano-tech.

A story worthy to ring in the new year. (Read through the midnight hour between 2018 and 2019)

It's been a while since I picked up a Susan Hayes book, but I have to say, I am very happy I did. I loved this book. The relationship between the three characters was heartwarming, to put it gently. Without giving away major spoilers, I can't say why I loved this one so much, but suffice to say, it's a bit different than most of her menage (or more) pairings. I liked all three for their own personalities: Pha's spunk, Tyr's loyalty, and Brax's fierce protectiveness. The end did leave me wondering what will happen next in the Drift.

No Limit

I really enjoyed reading about Phae, Tyr, and Brax. They had quite the adventures in their story. Lots of time with the three of them and plenty of mystery and action off ship as well.
It's listed as the fifth book of the series, but reads well enough on its own. However, there are couples that probably had their own stories earlier in the series and I'm absolutely going to go read them! I love reading about the world the author has created!

Had me on the edge of my seat.....BUT

I have love this series for a long time, and this books started out on the fast lane until you had to put the damn gay thing in 😡
You might just had the men kissing l don’t know but I stop reading the book.
Why does some authors think everyone wants to read about a homosexual. If you want to write about that then do so and make it known!
Will not read anymore of your books

So disappointed....

I have read several of Susan Hayes's books and I feel cheated. I read all kinds of books but I want me story to have heterosexual relationships, period. I want authors to be descriptive of the book. I wouldn't have purchased this book. I read several reviews and didn't see anything about a MMF. I did a DNF at the kiss between the two main male characters. Will be getting a refund :(

No limit to the goodness!

This series just keeps getting better! This book is about 2 aliens searching for a place to call home, who happen upon the Drift, and their mate. There is danger, and some surprising revelations in the ongoing story, but it is primarily a romance story that follows the growing relationship and love between the three main characters. I expect I’ll be re-reading it soon!

I am a little short on time. I just have to say I love the twists & turns with just the right amount of spice mixed in to keep the pages turning! There is always something else just a step ahead that makes you want to know what will happen next. Is the meeting going to go through? Is another one of corporation reps going to get assassinated? Who tried to kill Phae? You just have to keep reading until you find out all the juicy details! I love it!

I just don't like this writing style but I tried again with author. As previous book I read, lots of good potential but it felt like a hook up not love. The h annoyed me, she demands things everything to be her way, and then she wonders why they get cold feet about her. I just didn't feel their connection at all, and it was all TOLD to me. Boring.

Action packed alien mate story

This is an alien mate story. It is action packed and good world building. It did need a proof read and the delay of mating was page filler but if you can get past that, it had a good plot and likable characters. This is the only book I have read in this series. Good read.

Wonderful

Wonderful story, writing, and characters that will leave you wanting more. I jumped in the series with book 5 but it was easy to catch up on what was happening with out long drawn out explanations. Good romance with just enough loving to make it spicy. Loved it. Happy reading .

Loved the world

The world is cool and detailed. The menage is okay. The sex scenes were decent. The characters more sketches than people. But the plot was part of a larger tapestry I'm intrigued to read about now.

Hunky Alien MMF Menage- Oh My!

I haven't read all the other books before this one, but it's not extremely necessary. I'm sure it would've helped, but I was able to enjoy this story just fine. It even got a little kinky at the end which was really HOT, but way too short. ; D

Great cyborg series

This is not my usual book. I gave this series a try because I enjoy books about cyborgs. I couldn’t resist the mystery about the cyborgs past and who is going after them. Susan is a great writer. I’m looking forward to the next book.
