Young Wells received a spotty education, interrupted by several illnesses and family difficulties, and became a draper's apprentice as a teenager. The headmaster of Midhurst Grammar School, where he had spent a year, arranged for him to return as an "usher," or student teacher. Wells earned a government scholarship in 1884, to study biology under Thomas Henry Huxley at the Normal School of Science. Wells earned his bachelor of science and doctor of science degrees at the University of London. After marrying his cousin, Isabel, Wells began to supplement his teaching salary with short stories and freelance articles, then books, including The Time Machine (1895), The Island of Dr. Moreau (1896), The Invisible Man (1897), and The War of the Worlds (1898).
Wells created a mild scandal when he divorced his cousin to marry one of his best students, Amy Catherine Robbins. Although his second marriage was lasting and produced two sons, Wells was an unabashed advocate of free (as opposed to "indiscriminate") love. He continued to openly have extra-marital liaisons, most famously with Margaret Sanger, and a ten-year relationship with the author Rebecca West, who had one of his two out-of-wedlock children. A one-time member of the Fabian Society, Wells sought active change. His 100 books included many novels, as well as nonfiction, such as A Modern Utopia (1905), The Outline of History (1920), A Short History of the World (1922), The Shape of Things to Come (1933), and The Work, Wealth and Happiness of Mankind (1932). One of his booklets was Crux Ansata, An Indictment of the Roman Catholic Church. Although Wells toyed briefly with the idea of a "divine will" in his book, God the Invisible King (1917), it was a temporary aberration. Wells used his international fame to promote his favorite causes, including the prevention of war, and was received by government officials around the world. He is best-remembered as an early writer of science fiction and futurism.
He was also an outspoken socialist. Wells and Jules Verne are each sometimes referred to as "The Fathers of Science Fiction". D. 1946.

It's a cute little short story about things that go bump in the night. The ending is not very memorable, but the literary prowess to make the reader feel and hear the sounds in the darkness makes it worth the read.

القصة تدور احداثها فى مرصد فلكى وفى اثناء الليل اثناء مناوبة مساعد مراقب المرصد يتعرض لهجوم من كائن لم يستطع التعرف على ماهيته او سبب الهجوم بسبب الظلام.. القصة لم توضح اى تفسير للاسف

بعض القصص إن لم تكن ممتعة لكنها كافية لتضيف إلى معلوماتك ما كنت تجهله .. تعرفت من خلال هذه القصة على جزيرة "بورنيو" ثالث أكبر جزر العالم والتابعة لثلاث دول آسيوية .. والمشهورة بأنها جزيرة العجائب والغرائب لما فيها من حيوانات ونباتات وحشرات نادرة .. وهذا ما لعب عليه الكاتب في هذه القصة.

I loved the overall story and mood of this short story, but the abrupt ending really did not do it justice at all. The details are described really well and definitely pull you into the story. The mood is not necessary spooky, but you can definitely feel the tension!

Of all the H. G. Wells' short stories I've read so far, this one is rated the lowest here on ŷ, and I don't understand why. It's a perfectly servicable short story of a guy getting attacked by a beast while alone at night. It's not offensive, it's just kind of underdevelopped (which, fair, considering it's like 9 pages).

Рассказ такой маленький, что писать рецензию довольно сложно. Но я постараюсь:)
Первое, что приходит на ум - это остров доктора Моро. Я атмосферу произведения помню плохо, но вот людей-животных помню довольно хорошо. И вот в рассказе как раз считывается трансформация и нагнетание. Сложно внятно объяснить, но просто читаешь рассказ и тут же вспоминаешь Остров и животных. Я еще подумала читая, что это вроде как проба пера, точнее идеи, которая зазвучит в Острове. Специально проверила по датам и оказалось, что я правильно считала рассказ, он был написан в 1894, а Остров - в 1895. Так что первые необычные животные уже мучили автора в 1894, и появились они на, как это опять не странно, на острове, только не совсем уж спрятанном от глаз и людей, а Борнео, довольно таки населенном острове, а уж если судить, что там и обсерватория была, еще и довольно развитом, на определенном кусочке.
Я все же люблю произведения Уэллса. Люблю его фантазию. Мне нравится то, как он развивает сюжет и идею. Нравится, что у него нет лишней крови. Все логично обосновано. Обосновано и любопытство зверя, и его страх, и негодование перед огнем. Его испуг. Обосновано и поведение человека, в конце концов это не простой человек, а ученный. Ему тоже интересно, ему тоже любопытно и пусть ему страшно, но он хочет видеть, он хочет знать! Загадки природы его манят так, что ему в какой-то момент все равно на опасность и лишь, когда все заканчивается, когда приходит утро, которое мудренее вечера, он в конце концов приходит в себя:
Заодно в этом монологе есть и пересказ рассказа, без особых спойлеров, чтобы все же было что прочитать и новое открыть:)
И вообще Уэллса любопытно читать, даже рассказы, хотя они не полностью раскрывают возможности автора.
