Stake That by Mari Mancusi
The Blood Coven Vampires series #2. YA vampire fantasy. Slow burn romance.
Rayne McDonald expected to be turned into a vampire and live the high life for eternity. But because she and her twin sister look exactly alike, her sister Sunny got the boy instead. Worse, she’s just found out that she’s a vampire slayer! She can’t turn it down because it’s something determined at birth. Her first mission is to infiltrate a seedy bar and expose the vampire owner who is expected to be spreading a nasty blood virus. Rayne uses her fake ID that says she’s 22 instead of only 16, to get past the Bouncer at the door and finds a world that’s darker than expected. Jareth is her undercover biter, and together they try to figure out why vampires are getting sick and losing their powers.

The author did a great job getting teen attitude into the story. Quite a bit of teen angst between liking a boy and flipping on a dime, to be mad at him, parenting woes, school grades and friendship drama. Not to mention the whole twin confusion and then having to learn to wield a stake in the heart. Fortunately there is humor too and the boy returns her feelings so they can do the hunting part.
Amusing enough to outweigh the drama and read about the teen slayer. I’m looking forward to reading more of this series.

Mari Mancusi's 2nd novel in the Blood Coven Vampire series is an excellent read.

I fell in love with this series when I was much, much younger than I am now (aka high school era), but rereading this series has made me fall in love with Mari all over again. And with the introduction of Once Upon a Vampire into this series (kind of...it's in the same universe, so it's the same series, I geuss?) I had to go back and reread to get a feel of these books again (and just because I love them. I can't help it!).

This book is full of sassy, snarky teenage angst with a splash of vampires, blood and comedy. It may be labelled YA, but it's a great read for anyone who doesn't want something that is going to make your brain explode. It's an easy read with a fast yet simple plot and it's absolutely delightful. I was hooked when I first read them, and I'm hooked reading them yet again. Mari has a great style and tone in her writing that makes it really easy to read her books, fall in love with the characters and stay interested.

I find these stories have an easy to follow plot and it's well thought out. It doesn't get boring since it keeps moving as a fast yet leisurely pace. They are thoroughly enjoyable at any age, and don't require any advanced theorizing. This book follows Rayne's story, and it's a wonderful read and continuation of this series. It's a definite recommendation from me!!

Keep in mind - this series is narrated by sassy, silly teenagers who over exaggerate life's problems (like any other teenager, let's be honest guys. I thought the world was going to end in high school too when everything didn't go perfect!). So, you've been warned!! It's not a serious adult novel, it's a fun YA novel that adults can read and enjoy as well.

Overall, this series is fun! I really hope Mari continues on writing more books within this universe because it's nice reading something light-hearted and sweet!

Five out of five stars.

A saucy teenage romance sautéed with blood, vampires, and humor.

“I never said becoming the slayer would be a field trip to a Justin Bieber concert.

Stake That! by Mari Mancusi is a saucy teenage romance sautéed with blood, vampires, and humor. It is the second installment in Mari’s Blood Coven Vampire series, but can be enjoyed as a standalone if that is your preference. Just know that the first book, Boys that Bite, set up the author’s Blood Coven world and there are interconnected characters. The previous book focused on the story of human Sunny and vampire Magnus in which Sunny was accidentally bitten by Magnus, who’d been slated to bite Sunny’s twin, Rayne. Stake That! takes up right where Boys that Bite left off with Rayne’s story. Sunny and Magnus do make several appearances within this second book and it was great catching up with them.

As this story opens, Rayne learns that she’s actually the chosen one, Slayer Inc’s newest vampire slayer. There’s several downsides to this destiny, most notably that Rayne aspires to be a vampire herself (conflict of interest?) and that her twin sister is in love with Magnus, the vampiric head of the Blood Coven.

Rayne’s first assignment as the slayer is to investigate Maverick, an evil vampire who is plotting to take out Magnus. While checking out Maverick’s seedy vampire club, Rayne is stunned to meet Magnus second in command, General Jareth of the Blood Coven Army, there. After some initial confusion, she discovers that Jareth is also on assignment working undercover at Magnus behest. Even though they both aspire to the same goal, there’s no love lost between Rayne and Jareth. Forced to partner up, will the two be able to work together to bring down Maverick before they become targets themselves?

In the first book, Rayne was trouble and not a favorite character of mine. This story is told from Rayne’s POV, and in a surprising turnaround, I found her to be the more exciting storyteller. While Sunny is Ms. Goody Two-Shoes, Rayne’s mojo is rules are made to be broken. As a character, she’s funny, snarky and kick-ass. She grows up quickly in this book and I look forward to seeing her mature into her character even more in the next book, Girls that Growl. Then, there’s Jareth. He sports a deep, sexy, English accent and is the most gorgeous Goth guy Rayne has ever seen, short-circuiting her brain and taking her breath away. However, Jareth has long-standing relationship issues and, to say that he is averse to ever having a blood mate, is describing his avoidance mildly. This tale chronicles their enemies to more-than-friends story.

Following please find a few of my favorite quotes from Stake That!:

Mr. Teifert’s practically ancient at least forty, I’d say and so not sexy or cute or Australian.
---
OMG, RAYNE! THAT’S SO CRAZYPANTS! I CAN’T BELIEVE YOU OF ALL PEOPLE ARE NOW THE SLAYER! YOU’RE LIKE SOME SUPERHERO OR SOMETHING! DO YOU GET POWERS LIKE BUFFY? AND MORE IMPORTANT, DO U GET TO HOOK UP WITH SPIKE? YUM!
---
Curiouser and curiouser, as Alice in Wonderland would say
---
And then he kisses me. Yes, the beautiful vampire, the dark general, the one who never gets close to anyone, leans in and presses his lips against mine. This kiss is soft. Gentle. Light. Like a butterfly’s wing whisking my lips.

This tale is exciting with a simple plot and works perfectly as an easy escape read. I confess to laughing out loud multiple times at the author’s inherent sarcastic wit while reading it. The story has Buffy overtones but, despite some similarities, it’s far from a Buffy retelling. There’s also plenty of enjoyable fan references to the Lost Boys and even a few to Alice in Wonderland. Mari’s writing is engaging and easy to follow. The romance is YA . The ending is sweet and quite satisfying. Now, I can’t wait to dive into Girls that Growl next for more Rayne and Jareth! I would recommend this series to all ages who relish entertaining YA paranormal fantasies.

Loved it! This is a really fun series and i'm enjoying reading it. Rayne was a lot more feisty and mouthy than Sunny and i loved that she always had a sharp, witty comeback. She's my type of girl. I loved how her feelings for Jareth developed and how his changed towards her. I loved the banter between them. They were so cute and you knew that they were gonna manage to break down each others walls in the end- which they did.
I liked the ending of this book. It was very sweet and left me with many 'awwww' moments.
I recommend this series for fans of Vampire Kisses and vampire novels alike....

Based on the first book, I thought I knew Rayne's character. I assumed she's a badass, but I was wrong, and she has tons of issues. Rayne's social circle was next to nothing, and her daddy issue had rendered her helpless.

Tasked with a new role which Rayne had no clue on how to act as one, plus with the conflict of interests and a boy that triggered something in her heart that meanwhile also annoyed her to death, the story was light and easy to read. Just like the first book, the ending always included a clue for what to expect next.

"Stake That" is book two in the "Blood Coven Vampire" series by Mari Mancusi. Rayne has been the chosen vampire slayer and is learning about slaying the bad vampires. She goes undercover with Jareth (who is a vampire) and is trying to find out who is poisoning and killing people. I enjoy Rayne's snarky character. My favorite scene is when her and her twin sister, Sunny, take it upon themselves to scare off their mothers new boyfriend when he comes over for dinner. Mari does a wonderful job with this second installment of this series, and I can't wait to continue on in the series.

The first book in this series, , told the story of what happened after Rayne's sister Sunny was accidentally bitten by a vampire who'd intended to bite Rayne. In book two, Rayne discovers that instead of the vampire that she has always longed to be, she's actually the chosen one, Slayer Inc.'s newest vampire slayer. Her first assignment: find out what evil vampire Maverick is up to as he plots to take down Magnus, the leader of the Blood Coven (and Sunny's boyfriend). Rayne teams up with Jareth, second in command to Magnus and a vampire who is not impressed with Rayne. Can Rayne slay the evil vampire and find out what is bothering Jareth in time to bump her way to a high spot on the vampire-to-be waiting list, or is it her destiny to be the slayer forever?

Although this book, like its predecessor, suffers from over-exaggerated teenspeak in the opening section, it quickly settles down to a more even keel. Also, the book is told first in the form of a blog and then as a diary, so it suffers a bit from the shallowness that is hard to avoid with that format. And Jareth and Magnus, though dreamy, are still not fully realized characters yet.

With that said, this book is still laugh-out-loud funny and a very enjoyable read. In fact, when I read it during silent reading my students kept turning around to stare at me because I was laughing so hard. I'm definitely going to keep reading this series.

Rayne is faced with her new role as a vampire slayer. She's learning everything, from which vampires are which to the art of carving her own wooden stake. To complicate matters she must work with Jareth, a vampire who makes Rayne's head spin.

Add to the adventures a love interest for the girls' mother, a dangerous, unknown vampire virus.
MY SUMMARY: technically,a virus is going around, and ranye has to go undercover to slay the vampire that's incharge of all of this!
she meets jareth at the club, where he is also undercover to find out who's in charge of the virus...magnus makes them team up to go find out and thats where the love starts.

SPOILER!?!?!:-------------->

----------> at the end of the book, ranye is about to die(because of the virus), and jareth saves her using the only way, turning her into a vampire!!!

This was such a fun read. I think I laughed within the first chapter and believe me, it was exactly what I needed after the long book I had endured right before it.
This was light, fun, and humorous but still it had some real issues in it and problems that needed to be solved and a mystery to take care of.
This is such a fun series. Anyone who loves a fast quick read and the paranormal really should try out this series.

No one knows better that Rayne McDonald that what you want and what you get are two completely different things. All Rayne ever wanted to be was a vampire. After applying for vampire conversion, working her way up to the top of the waiting list, attending vampire training classes (and doing all the homework!) she lost Magnus her vampire blood mate-to-be when he accidentally bit her twin sister Sunny by mistake. What Rayne actually got was the news that she is the new vampire slayer and she must embrace her destiny or die. It sounds slightly over dramatic when put like that but she was chosen at birth to be a slayer and infected with a virus at that time by Slayers Inc. They can activate the virus at any time and kill her if she refuses her destiny.Given no choice Rayne takes up the slaying stake for Slayers Inc., although she does realise that this could ruin her reputation within the vampire community and put a crimp in her plans to be turned into a vampire at a later date. Her first job as the slayer is to infiltrate a seedy vampire blood bar and expose the bar owner’s plans to over throw Magnus the current blood coven leader. Whilst investigating at the bar she runs into Jareth sexy Goth and Magnus’s right hand man who is also investigating the bar.Although Jareth and Rayne don’t exactly hit it off when they first meet they agree to team up in order to discover the bar owner’s secret plans. Rayne needs all the help she can get - it isn’t like she’s had much slayer training and her instructor won’t even give her any cool weapons. All she got given was a piece of wood! And not only does she have to investigate the blood bar but she needs to keep an eye on her mother too, who has started dating again after 4 years. Unfortunately Rayne suspects that her mother’s new date is actually an evil vampire

This series is so shamelessly derivative it's like reading crossover fan fiction of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and every other vampire-related film or TV show the author has ever watched. The Buffy influence is so heavy the characters make frequent references to the show as the plot points in the book parallel the ones on the show. The writing is horrible, with the excessive use of ridiculous slang and the stupid made-up words (Mancusi has an infuriatingly annoying habit of adding the suffix -age at the end of words to make a word that is not a noun into a noun, e.g. suck-age). The dialogue is painfully juvenile, with the teenage characters speaking like this: "OMG, OMG, this is like, the worst day of my life!" Oh, and there's another round of insta-love.

But I still gave this 3 stars. What gives? The part of me that loves great literature and appreciates good writing is ashamed, because by all rights I should give this 1 star, but...I didn't hate it. The explanation is simple, really: it's enjoyable, no-effort fluff that you can get through quickly and not think much about. Enjoyable trash. And the characters have grown on me. There should be less googly eyes at thousand-year-old male vampires and more twin interactions, though.

*cringes and crawls away in shame*

Stake That is the second book in the Blood Coven Vampire series. It centers on the twin sister of book one’s heroine. Rayne is a goth girl who is waiting her turn to be turned into a vampire. Unfortunately, just when her blood mate has been found and vampirism was within her reach her vampire blood mate mistakes her twin sister for her. Sister Sunny became the vamp leaving Rayne to move to the bottom of the list to start over. Rayne is a fun character. She is a goth girl filled with teenage angst that quickly mixes with real world angst. Life throws her a major curve ball but after a bit of “why me she not only rolls with it but embraces it. Her love interest is Jareth, a vampire general in service to coven master Magnus. They work together to try to stop the evil vampire. Jareth is a great match for Rayne. He has secrets and angst of his own. They do not really like each other at first but their attraction is evident. The story has an interesting format. It is told in first person mostly through blog posts and diary entries. This is not usually a format I like but it worked well in this book to capture the feel of teenage life. I recommend this book to anyone who likes YA paranormal romance.

I listened to the audiobook. The narrator is a nice job capturing the angsty goth girl.

Stake That! is the second installment in the Blood Coven series. It was such a light and fun book to read.

In this installment the book is centered around Rayne, the goth version of the McDonald twins the entire book. The first book was all about Sunshine, aka Sunny who is Rayne's twin sister but the complete opposite of her. Now that Sunny is no longer a vampire she is dating Magnus, the head of the vampire coven. Rayne however has been chosen to be the next vampire slayer. What does that mean for her vampire friends?

Rayne is given the task to find out about Maverick, a bad vampire and blood bar owner. He is spreading a virus to blood donors who are then spreading it to their vampire hosts. The vampires are becoming ill and even losing their vamp powers. It is up to Rayne to figure out how to stop this and slay the evil vampire in the process. But what she was not expecting was to team up with the hot, mysterious vampire Jareth.

I enjoyed reading this from beginning to end. Rayne is just so funny and so different from Sunny that I found myself smiling and laughing throughout. I liked how the story ended in this book but I am also excited to see what is going to happen next with these fun, vampire loving twins!

Mari Mancusi's second book in the Blood Coven Vampire Novel series is another excellent read! I fell in love with this series when it first came out (even as a 24yr old adult at the time) but rereading this series has made me fall in love with it all over again.

This second book is full of snarky teenage angst with a splash of comedy and vampires. In the first book we learned about who Sunny was and in book 2 it's all about Rayne. Rayne has studied for ever to become a vampire only to have her twin sister mistaken as her, and then not even go through with the transformation. And not only that but also fall in love with the guy who was supposed to turn her. You would think Rayne would be mad but she isn't. Now she is back to the waiting list to find a new mate all while taking on the task of becoming a slayer for Slayer Inc. This book definitely has Buffy the Vampire Slayer feels and it makes me love it even more as it's one of my favs!

Rayne is sent on a mission to find out what's making the vampires sick with a partner who loathes her. But little does she know her might just be her next mate.

This book definitely has more action than the first and will keep you wanting more.

Stake That: A Blood Coven Vampire Novel (The Blood Coven Vampires Book 2)

Stake That: A Blood Coven Vampire Novel (The Blood Coven Vampires Book 2) Goth girl Rayne is dying to be a vampire, and her sister, Sunny, is the one that is dating the 🧛‍♀ vampire . As if Rayne's life wasn't bad enough, she finds out that her destiny is to be the new vampire 🧛 slayer 🧗🏻‍♀️. She is given a very special mission... she is to infiltrate vamp bar where foul play is suspected to find out exactly what is going on inside, wielding a stake carved by her own delicate hands as her only weapon. Easy, right? Little does she know that when she poses as a willing human blood donor at the bar that she is going to be approached by such a sexy vampire!!! My husband was laughing and was upset that I read the book 📕when I didn’t listen to the book because I listened to the audible book and read when I could, finished Definitely recommend this book 📖 / series 📚

I reread this book as part of a personal challenge to finish series I started but never finished. I now remember why I didn't finish it. The entire book is written in teen-speak. This makes sense as it is a book about a teenager written for teenagers. I found it a little annoying but I was willing to deal with that for a good story. It also made the MC's voice particularly strong. That's what did me in because I can't stand the MC. I didn't like her in the first book and an entire book from her point of view is just too much. I gave it a shot but I think, for me, this is one series that is not going to be revived.

Rayne is still a bit miffed that Sunny was bitten by mistake when she had been matched with Magnus. She is back on the waiting list for another match. She is determined to become a vampire. The drama teacher at their school pulls Rayne aside to let her know that she is the new slayer and job she can’t decline or she will be killed. Her first assignment is to figure out what Maverick is up to at the vampire club. Rayne gets paired up with Jareth, a soldier of Magnus. They figure out what is going on at the club now they just need to survive to get help. Along the way Rayne and Jareth find they really don’t hate each other as much as they thought. Looking forward to the next book!

Stake That by Mari Mancusi continues the story of the twins Sunny and Rayne. The second book focuses more on Rayne as the main character. Rayne who wants nothing more than to become a vampire and has her first attempt spoiled by Magnus biting the wrong twin. Now that she is on the waiting list again for a soul mate vampire as bad luck would have it Rayne finds out she is the next in line to be the Vampire Slayer. This could be the end all of her vampire dreams. I enjoyed the second book overall the storyline was good and I enjoyed Rayne's story.

It's very obviously some type of Buffy parody book but it's well written and makes me laugh a lot. The internet and World Of Warcraft parts are very interesting as well as funny. It did stop being funny at the troll comments on her blog. Don't come here for a completely serious book ; there are only a few serious parts. This is for the people who love Werid Al songs....truly. I'm not a fan of old vampires dating high schoolers though...it's just wrong. Otherwise I recommend for a good laugh.
