Luigi Pirandello; Agrigento (28 June 1867 鈥� Rome 10 December 1936) was an Italian dramatist, novelist, poet, and short story writer whose greatest contributions were his plays.
He was awarded the 1934 Nobel Prize in Literature for "his almost magical power to turn psychological analysis into good theatre.
Pirandello's works include novels, hundreds of short stories, and about 40 plays, some of which are written in Sicilian. Pirandello's tragic farces are often seen as forerunners of the Theatre of the Absurd.

If we're living our lives from a carefully rehearsed script we're wooden. But if we only go with the flow, we're truly living our life. So says Luigi Pirandello.

For if our part is scripted, someday we'll blank out and bomb. Get real!

Directionless lives Work. Lives with Sure Direction fake it. And if you were born a Free Spirit you KNOW it's so.

In my Senior Year of high school I hated boxes, perhaps like you. I longed for freer and greener pastures than my parochial backwater had to offer. Swampy backwaters fester, and in green pastures I thought I would fear no ill.

I was wrong.

In a sleepy swamp, bullies roar: but in the open they simply insinuate. Some folks stake their lifeblood -- and, alas, their life direction - on getting what they want in life.

So which life is fuller: Directionless or Self-Directed? I'll let my sure footed friend Dee from senior year answer.

"I'll be honest: I'm about to attend uni, cause I want to SUCCEED in life. I'm self-directed, and I want a self-directed man. I'm gonna make my dreams come true.

"Look at the losers around me now... like that born loser, Fergus.

"Last night he took me to a postmodern play - Six Characters In Search of a Direction - or Author, I mean! He thought it was just peachy. Loser... It's like all he thinks about is how directionless modern life is!

"You know, he said there was more to think about in that garbage play, than he could fit into one night -

"A real creep! We're not here to Think, Dumbo, we're here to Make Ourselves Rich!

"Sheesh, I mean, was he a loser!"

So Dee, my sometime date the summer after high school.

And yes, she dumped me, the first week of college.

My life is still directionless. And Dee's?

Dunno, but I pray she's found her peace.

"When a character is born, he acquires at once such an independence, even of his own author, that he can be imagined by everybody even in many other situations where the author never dreamed of placing him; and so he acquires for himself a meaning which the author never thought of giving him."

This is true for almost all of my favourite books. I often disagree with the initial thoughts the authors had when they created their stories, as I form my own distinctive ideas about the characters while reading, and I am not willing to give them up to suit the "accuracy" of literary studies - a field I gave up after university in order to keep my passion for reading.

The tension between reader and writer, between interpretation and author's intention, the relationship between parent and child, the break between an individual and the cultural heritage into which he is born, the loneliness of a character trying to find a suitable role in a world that doesn't ask for his performance - the questions raised by Pirandello are as difficult as they are relevant.

I wonder at his genius sometimes. When he wrote his experimental play, did he see all those characters of the future coming to usurp the role of the artist, to search for their own publicity, their own stages, their own words? When he imagined the conflict between the "unrealised characters"and their potential author, did he see something in human beings that was waiting for the technological development that made self-realisation as easy as going to a traditional interview? Via Facebook, Youtube, Twitter and Instagram?

All of social media is full of characters who look for an audience for their words, their gestures, their poses, their banality-filled life stories. They don't need to bow to the power of an author anymore to satisfy their need for visibility - all that is required is an increasing number of other characters who are willing to admire the Facebook picture of a morning latte in exchange for a like on the latest holiday snapshot.

The absurdity of our reality is the topic of Pirandello's philosophical play, and he shows the tragic comedy of life as a stage where human beings fight for visibility, taking their ridiculous small matters as seriously as can be, always conscious of the reaction of viewers:

"What is the stage? It's a place, baby, you know, where people play at being serious, a place where they act comedies. We've got to act a comedy now, dead serious."

I am seen, therefore I am. That is our era's credo. And art is in the eye of the beholder - which gives the audience a power which has yet to be put on stage:

"An audience in search of entertaining characters" is the next step - and we have plenty of characters who are willing to step up to play any parts that will get a decent amount of applause!

La obra comienza en un teatro donde un grupo de actores est谩 ensayando una obra de Pirandello. De repente, irrumpen en escena seis personajes que han sido abandonados por su autor y buscan desesperadamente a alguien que cuente su historia. Los personajes son: el Padre, la Madre, el Hijo, la Hijastra, el Muchacho y la Ni帽a. Cada uno de ellos tiene una narrativa intensa y conflictiva que se va desvelando a medida que interact煤an con el Director y los actores presentes.


Es una obra de teatro realmente compleja y me ha llamado la atenci贸n el hecho de que el dramaturgo catalogue esta pieza como 鈥渃omedia鈥� siendo que lo que menos logra es sacar risas al p煤blico. Es m谩s, he quedado asombrada ante la crueldad y la tragedia que se transmiten. Por cierto, es importante recordar la atm贸sfera pol铆tica que viv铆a Pirandello en aquellos a帽os; un r茅gimen totalitario estaba presente en Europa (de hecho, unos a帽os despu茅s estar谩 Mussolini al poder en Italia, pa铆s del escritor).听

Los personajes en esta obra son realmente complejos e intrigantes. El primero de ellos es el padre, el l铆der de los seis personajes. Es inteligente y atormentado, busca redenci贸n y comprensi贸n; su desesperaci贸n por contar su versi贸n de los hechos refleja la lucha por la identidad y el reconocimiento.
En cuanto a la madre, esta representa el sufrimiento y la resignaci贸n. Su dolor es palpable y su presencia es un recordatorio constante del drama y la tragedia que rodea a la familia.
La hijastra para m铆 ha sido el personaje con el que m谩s he empatizado. Es rebelde y llena de resentimiento, la Hijastra est谩 en conflicto con el Padre (tiene motivos m谩s que v谩lidos para odiarlo, en especial por el hecho de que ten铆a que prostituirse para mantener a la familia y pareciera ser que el Padre se aprovechaba sexualmente de ella). Su car谩cter desafiante y provocador introduce una din谩mica de tensi贸n y revela profundos traumas familiares.
El Hijo es bastante curioso ya que se muestra distante y ap谩tico, el Hijo se muestra indiferente a los dramas familiares. Su desapego es una respuesta a la disfuncionalidad y al caos que percibe en su entorno.
El Muchacho es menor en edad y presencia, el Muchacho es un personaje tr谩gico cuya vida es silenciada por los acontecimientos y decisiones de los adultos a su alrededor. En cuanto a La Ni帽a, es un s铆mbolo de inocencia perdida. Su tr谩gico destino es un punto crucial en la narrativa, marcando el dolor y las consecuencias de las acciones de los otros personajes.

Con personajes tan fuertes e incre铆bles, Pirandello logra jugar magistralmente con el concepto de "teatro dentro del teatro" (el metateatro) y pone en cuesti贸n la frontera entre la realidad y la ficci贸n. Los seis personajes buscan una existencia tangible a trav茅s de su historia. La interacci贸n entre los personajes y los actores genera una reflexi贸n profunda sobre la naturaleza del ser y la creaci贸n art铆stica. Los personajes tienen la necesidad de querer existir, es por ello que buscan con desesperaci贸n alg煤n dramaturgo que quiera escribir su historia.


Finalmente, puedo decir que es una obra realmente interesante y que aborda temas como la b煤squeda de identidad, la naturaleza del arte, el sufrimiento humano y la realidad versus la ilusi贸n. Pirandello nos enfrenta a preguntas inc贸modas sobre nuestra percepci贸n de la realidad y el poder de las historias para definir qui茅nes somos. 饾檸饾櫄饾櫈饾櫒 饾櫏饾櫄饾櫑饾櫒饾櫎饾櫍饾櫀饾櫉饾櫄饾櫒 饾櫄饾櫍 饾櫁饾櫔饾櫒饾櫂饾櫀 饾櫃饾櫄 饾櫀饾櫔饾櫓饾櫎饾櫑 es una obra compleja y fascinante que desaf铆a las convenciones teatrales y filos贸ficas. Tiene personajes muy bien desarrollados y un argumento que invita a la reflexi贸n. La raz贸n para darle esta calificaci贸n radica en su naturaleza a veces excesivamente abstracta, que puede resultar desafiante para algunos lectores. Sin embargo, su impacto en la literatura y el teatro moderno es innegable, haciendo de esta obra una lectura esencial para aquellos interesados en el drama y la filosof铆a existencialista.

Six Characters in Search of a Stage

Presents a comic (tragic?) and confusing cast of six enigmatic characters seeking an author who can put them inside a 'book'.

They need this badly, so that they can live where they are born to live -- on the stage, and away from this off-stage world of ordinary people, without 'drama' inborn in them. They stumble on a stage and almost manages to get a director to present their story too.

But in the end their play does not manage to get presented -- because how can their story be truly represented without the 'missing' author? Also, who can play them on-stage? Surely they can't be allowed to play themselves! Thus the 'Drama' never materializes. Instead is presented the comedy of their vain attempts at putting their 'drama' 'out there', because, being mere characters, they need an audience all the time! But there is also the tragedy inherent in the situation -- the six characters have been rejected by their author. the author did not consider them worthy of a presentation, since he did not feel anything meaningful about life can be told through their story?

Now what use is your drama if your author did not think it worthy of 'philosophy'? How can you innovate or derive real meaning in the absence of the divine author?


This intricate play needs to be seen on-stage. I could imagine seeing this play and deriving great enjoyment from the bewilderment of the manager etc., but on the lifeless pages of a book it fails to capture me. Continuously imagining it on stage was too exhausting to maintain. I will be looking forward to an opportunity to catch this on the screen or on the stage.

These characters cannot be experienced fully away from their natural habitat. They are made too precisely.

Recently, casually, a friend mentioned who he thinks I am. It was not at all who I think I am! Among other things, his version of me - inexplicably - is not a Viking. I'm pretty sure he was projecting there, but how would I know? Is there anyone less qualified to interpret me than me?

Pirandello's absurdist 1921 play is about how we create our own realities: how each of us choose to play a character, to such an extent that we sometimes sit outside ourselves, watching our characters act out their scenes. And some part of us sits outside that, watching the watcher, and who knows who lives at the bottom of it all? And it's about the subjective nature of reality: how to each of us, the scenes we live through may be be completely different to each actor in them.

This is what Pirandello's dealing with, at least until Act III when he starts to talk about the writing process and also to wrap up his own plot. It's all very smart, and often funny. My character enjoys it. A character under that thinks it's a little show-offy. A character under that is afraid he didn't get it at all, and a character under that is afraid that his opinion hasn't even been written.

This made for a whimsical and thought provoking 鈥渞ead鈥� by LibriVox audiobook. A family of six wanders into a theater where a director and cast are rehearsing a play by Pirandello (in which they complain 鈥渘obody understands anything, and where the author plays the fool with us all鈥�). The Father and Mother (names unspecified) explain they and their children are Characters in the middle of a drama that is in sore need of an author to make it real and bring some resolution to their story. Though the director is not an author, he is captivated enough by their story to believe he could fulfill their needs by having his actors put on a production. He begins to have the family reenact their story and then have the actors try to emulate their performance. After one section the family complains or laughs about the quality and veracity of the actors and argue that they should be the ones used in the production. As they proceed with their attempts at acting out their history, the family reveals such lurid, melodramatic, and tragic elements to their story, the director comes to doubt whether it鈥檚 believable and believes he has wasted a whole day of rehearsal.

The play was pretty zany with the cynical director trying to juggle so many balls, the actors getting upstaged, and the sordid pathos of the extremely dysfunctional family leaping off the page through their strident efforts to become realized through a stage performance. Fiction and non-fiction get confused in our minds, and the magic in the roles of director, actor, and script gets undermined by their vivisection that takes place before our eyes. The one element missing is the writer, which I suppose we are supposed to consider as the reason for the director鈥檚 conclusion of defeat.

First premiered in 1921, this play was a seminal precursor to the post-war Theater of the Absurd, such as Beckett鈥檚 鈥淲aiting for Godot鈥� (1952). This play鈥檚 full-tilt boogie on the 鈥渕eta鈥� element of crossovers between authors and their characters also presaged common uses of this device in postmodern works four or more decades later. In particular, his countryman Calvino in the 1979 novel 鈥淚f on a winter鈥檚 night a traveler鈥� makes a related kind of mind-bender with its screwball tale of readers shaping and getting involved with the contents and authors of what they鈥檙e reading.

This makes for a short, fun read (or listen) as an introduction to the work of a Pulitzer Prize winner. Though most respected as a playwright, he did write some novels (and volumes of essays and short stories). I look forward to trying his novel 鈥淭he Late Mattia Pascal鈥� (1904).

Who is Luigi Pirandello?

A twentieth century writer from Sicily.

A Noble Prize winner.

I had never heard of him.

This play, 鈥楽ix characters in search of an Author鈥� is just great.

Pirandello wrote this apparition, an invention without oxygen, atop Mt. Etna, or so it seems. Like life, it is completely absurd. More cannot be packed into so few pages. I am still shaking my head.

A pinch of tragedy, doses of satire, an undercurrent of philosophy throughout, complex and detailed actors and their exchanges, a slice of psychology, human folly, and life鈥檚 randomness.

And to think it lasted only a year and a half, off-Broadway, before it closed because of thinning attendance, not very long ago.

It is significant. Perceptions.

If you want a sure thing in the quest to discover your self, you could spend the next ten years in analysis, see a psychologist, join a cult, read every book of philosophy and physics or you can read Luigi Pirandello鈥檚 Six Characters in Search of an Author. I jest. But, this is about the illusory nature of theatre, more than the individual self. But still... We could wonder more about who we are by the end of it.

The forgotten modernist text that came out in that recent centenary of greats around 1922 (1921 in this case), the title sounds as good in translation as it does in the original. Clever of Pirandello to achieve that.

Plays often don鈥檛 work on the page, you miss all the staging. But in this case, the staging acts like text so you can read the extensive stage directions like you might read landscape details or even character descriptions. Again, pretty clever of Pirandello to make his work so usable.

What goes on here? Well, a theatre company is about to rehearse a play by Luigi Pirandello. They are gathering, the lead actress is late as one might expect, the stage is unfinished, stuff is kind of lying around, the lights aren鈥檛 set up right.

They are about to start and then, six characters come by. This is a big production. There鈥檚 half a dozen 鈥榓ctors鈥�, producer, stage managers, prompters etc, so on stage at any one time there is usually around 15 people. Pirandello should know better, but you have to keep you budget down and think small cast. But, it鈥檚 not a play, it鈥檚 a 鈥渞eal鈥� event we are watching, the play hasn鈥檛 started yet鈥� the details haven鈥檛 been written, it鈥檚 all emerging.

These characters start telling everyone about their lives, only they are short on detail and big on passionate expression. So they come across as so 鈥榬eal鈥� that the producer abandons rehearsals and starts listening to the characters and thinks this would make a great play. At one level, the characters represent the stock in trade types, father, mother, son, daughter in law etc from which a family drama might be explored.

The producer and the characters go off and start to write and rehearse this new play. The producer becomes their author in a sense. They are raw, undetailed. They wear representative masks, they are not yet well drawn characters, or even selves. They think they are real and credible, based on their endless emotional outpourings. This makes me think I am reading at times a novel by Rachel Cusk and after reading this, I in fact read her recent book Second Place (funnily enough published 100 years after Six Characters, though unintentionally I suspect).

Pirandello loves to toy with illusions, the stage is not a stage, the actors are meagre performers, the only real is the unformed self, or the present embodiment of the self as it speaks in front of the audience, or perhaps the person speaking to you in the street is the only real we can experience, or what they say is the only thing we can know.

Best to read it, but there are no endings in the search. Oddly, as a Sicilian, Pirandello didn鈥檛 get much exposure in his native land for his theatre.

They say I was born in June. The day, the year somehow ceases to exist. I live with my mother. She stares at the wall, singing songs unnoticing my existence in the house. Is this how being an orphan feels like? I used to work at Madame Pace鈥檚 dress shop. Only it wasn't a dress shop. It was a whore house where I used to entertain clients throughout the night. My mother was unaware of my earnings, but as if it mattered. Then, one day I fell in love. In fact, I fell in love with his eyes. The same brown affectionate eyes that I own. They were so memorable, they were mine. I could see myself in them. My eyes on this strange face, mesmerizing yet daunting. He was my client, elderly yet so affectionate. Months went by, but he never visited me again. I looked for him but no avail. They say, he shot himself out of guilt. He was my biological father. The shame of seducing his own blood ate him up after finding my truth. So, as I lay in a pool of blood, the cold metal burning against my sinful hands, I pierce the sharp edge into the warm blob of flesh. I killed my baby. I killed my brother. I practically cease to exist now. Shame and numbness has weighed my soul into nothingness. The man once my mother had left my father for took her away. So, here I come to you with an unfilled life and an unfinished story pleading you to bring an authored conclusion.

鈥淵ou imbecile鈥�, yelled the stage-manager. 鈥淵ou expect me to believe this garbage and let my actors perform your absurdity".

鈥淵es鈥�, I affirm, 鈥淭he settings should be realistic and the truth should be told in its unaltered form.鈥�

鈥淚 am an unrealized character sir鈥�, I humbly say, 鈥淚 need you to finish my story and bring it to life鈥�.

The stage manager now enraged walks away hurling obscenities and muttering, 鈥淎cting is our business here. Truth up to a certain point, but no further鈥�; as he looks at me with a sardonic smile.


Pirandello illuminates the 鈥楾heatre of Absurd鈥� genre in this bizarre performance. A form of drama that emphasizes the absurdity of human existence by employing disjointed, repetitious and meaningless dialogue, purposeless and confusing situations and plots that lack realistic or logical development. Purely in its theatrical form he depicts a tale of six characters in search of an author who is able not only to complete their fragmentary story but to perform their ingenuous legitimacy. A story which is not a story after all. Through the numerous arguments between the six characters and the stage manager about portrayal of reality in its unaltered state to the audiences marks the debate of life reality v/s stage reality. The sense of illusion what is illustrated to be a reality on performance stage is far from the factual forms.

The plethora of reality television that demarcates an entire generation outlook mutates the genuineness of its characters. How real are the nuances of these actors who state publicly that their respected shows are not scripted but spontaneous? The movies that state 鈥榖ased on a true story鈥�, how far do they enact the truth or is pragmatism edited to normalization of absurdity. Pirandello stresses on the theatre being an illusion of reality where actors masquerade real emotions through rehearsals and mutability.

A brilliant existentialism perception of individuals being characters all through their life portraying roles that they're born into and the normality of emotions attached to their specific roles. Who are we? The roles that we are born into or the tangible roles we want to play.

Un teatro nel teatro 猫 quello che ci propone Pirandello in questa piece.
Sei personaggi che si presentano sulla scena di un teatro in cui si svolgono altre prove. Sei attori che attori non sono, ma che SONO il teatro, che ce l鈥檋anno dentro.

脠 in noi, signore.
Il dramma 猫 in noi; siamo noi; e siamo
impazienti di rappresentarlo, cos矛 come dentro ci
urge la passione!


Uno studio sulla rappresentazione della verit脿, su ci貌 che passa dall鈥檃ltro che non 猫 me, sui sentimenti, le emozioni che non si possono creare con le parole soltanto, ma che devono esistere dentro per poter essere 鈥渞appresentate鈥� a dovere;

Ma se 猫 tutto qui il male! Nelle parole!
Abbiamo tutti dentro un mondo di cose; ciascuno un
suo mondo di cose! E come possiamo intenderci,
signore, se nelle parole ch'io dico metto il senso e il
valore delle cose come sono dentro di me; mentre
chi le ascolta, inevitabilmente le assume col senso e
col valore che hanno per s猫, del mondo com'egli l'ha
dentro? Crediamo d'intenderci; non c'intendiamo
mai!


nella rappresentazione di quel multiplo che 猫 il fulcro della poetica dell鈥檃utore come in 鈥淯no, nessuno e centomila鈥�.
Il dramma per me 猫 tutto qui, signore: nella
coscienza che ho, che ciascuno di noi - veda - si
crede "uno" ma non 猫 vero: 猫 "tanti", signore, "tanti",
secondo tutte le possibilit脿 d'essere che sono in noi:
"uno" con questo, "uno" con quello - diversissimi! E
con l'illusione, intanto, d'esser sempre "uno per tutti",
e sempre "quest'uno" che ci crediamo, in ogni
nostro atto. Non 猫 vero! non 猫 vero!



Un dramma mai finito che gli attori sentono vivo sulla loro pelle, lo esorcizzano con grasse risate, ma sempre si ripete per loro in un crescendo di Bene e Male, di dolore e sofferenza, di satira e dramma che si aggrovigliano davanti a noi, veri e soli spettatori del doppio.

E insieme al pianto e al riso, insieme a tutte quelle cose che non si possono spiegare... ancora una volta mi hai fatto commuovere.
Perch茅 in quella tragedia, in quel dramma che fa ridere, che apre le costole, ci trovo tutto il mistero delle cose che fanno male, di tutte quelle cose incomprese nascoste sotto pelle come sangue e lividi...
Sai Luigi, forse anche io parlo, ma le mie parole sono camere vuote, riempite del mio sentimento, del mio vagare per il mondo;camere che si svuotano ogni volta che le pronuncio.
Forse non ci capiremo mai davvero, noi, esseri umani piccoli e fragili, grandi come la nostra consapevolezza di star compiendo un viaggio assurdo e terribile, meraviglioso e insostituibile.
Ma forse sta proprio qua la bellezza di questa commedia, di questa tragedia che ti toglie il respiro e ti incita a leggere, ancora, sempre di pi霉; arte come creazione.

Era da tanto che non rileggevo questa opera immortale... ma ne 猫 valsa la pena; ogni volta ci trov貌 dentro qualcosa di nuovo, e ogni volta mi stupisco di come gli esseri umani possano trovarsi, anche attraverso i secoli, anche attraverso l鈥檌nchiostro 馃枈

A reluctant theatrical company is rehearsing a new play by a guy named Luigi Pirandello, the director complaining to his actors about the lack of good material to work with. Their rehearsal is interrupted by a family group who comes on stage demanding an audience with this manager. A Father, A Mother, A Son, A Daughter and two mostly silent Children, boy and girl: in total six new personages enter the bare scene.

They present themselves as characters from an abandoned play, a story that its author lost interest in or thought without commercial merits. Yet these characters feel real and deserving of having their story told. They try to persuade the Manager to hear them out and to rehearse with them instead of the current play they are studying.

The presentation is slightly humorous in its initial stages, with most of the comedy coming from the commentary Pirandello makes about his own theatrical output and from the reversal of the traditional progress of the spectacle. But the best result of this unusual debut is to break the fourth wall with the audience and invite them to participate in the creative exercise by analysing the relationship between the author of the story, the directorial insights of the Manager and the personal interpretation of the text by the professional actors.

What is ultimately real in this interplay between multiple levels of editorial changes? Who controls the story when its author is not present to explain it in detail, his characters have taken off from their script in an affirmation of free will and the directors and company members have their own opinions about what a proper spectacle should look like?

The Six Characters plead their case with passion and eloquence, insisting that the story itself, a family drama about betrayal, incest and hidden rivalries, should be told from their point of view, since they are real people now, even if they originally came from the pen of an author. Yet everybody else thinks they know better how the theatrical world turns.

This was my first attempt to discover Luigi Pirandello, and I was truly impressed, despite a long-standing reluctance to read theatre or opera in its printed form. I consider the live performance of the material essential to a correct understanding of the form, yet Pirandello, with his metafictional composition and with his subtle subversion of my conventional mentality, managed to persuade me otherwise. How did he do it?

Calling his piece a comedy initially, and then getting serious about the nature of the show and about its hidden cross-currents mostly. Pointing out the entertainment value of the spectacle and then subverting it by callous disregard of the real drama the Six Characters are going through: it was like Rome was burning and its citizens were busy discussing whether Petronius or Nero is throwing the best parties.

For man never reasons so much and becomes so introspective as when he suffers; since he is anxious to get at the cause of his sufferings, to learn who has produced them, and whether it is just or unjust that he should have to bear them. On the other hand, when he is happy, he takes his happiness as it comes and doesn鈥檛 analyse it, just as if happiness were his right. The animals suffer without reasoning about their sufferings. But take the case of a man who suffers and begins to reason about it. Oh no! it can鈥檛 be allowed! Let him suffer like an animal, and then 鈥� ah yet, he is 鈥渉uman鈥�!

I was helped along by the detailed stage directions and character acting instructions, preparing the stage for the monologues that will later develop the main themes of the play.
The whole lecture only lasted a couple of hours on a rainy Sunday afternoon, but my curiosity was satisfied, and I plan to try to find some of Pirandello鈥檚 celebrated short stories, those that have gained him a Noble Prize in Literature.
I believe this two acts play works well on its own as a novella and as an introduction to the universe of this talented author.

Stop, wait! It was the Six Characters in Search of an Author!
Well, there actually is a connection. Milo Manara was the reason I first got acquainted with Luigi Pirandello.

Now that I have fought my way through the play a few song lines pops up in my head.
"Wooords doooon麓t come eeeasy tooo meee 鈥�" & "What麓s the fuzz, tell me what is happening?"

I can easily see the chocking effect it had when first performed, even I don麓t quite get that the good people of Milan should be so much more open-minded than the citizens of Rome.

As revolting as it is that a young woman should meet her estranged father in 鈥渁 house of ill reputation鈥�, that the characters without an author are alienated, disconnected and yet full of inner life insisting that said life should be enlarged, I still fail to feel the grandness of the play.
A play within a play, or a meta narrative is what is forming, and the storyline is just not strong enough.

The absurdist experimenting theatre is no stranger to me. I see where we are going, that art for arts sake is not enough for Pirandello 鈥� and I see the beginning of method acting. The actor learning from a scrip is a dying race, in from left comes the real human tragedy or drama. The Mimesis of old has now played its part and may retire. But, this is not even close to social realism, even the translator Eric Bentley spend many pages paraphrasing it as such.

It is an interesting take on family tragedies from a man who was alienated from his own family in so many ways that it is hard not to call out to Freud to clear things up.

However significant it was in the 1920麓es it regrettably leaves me lukewarm today.

I have never in my 22 years watched a music video I liked, or enjoyed, or didn't immediately regret putting myself through at the expense of all the various plays between the song and my imagination that had flourished in its non-existence. Once you watch someone else's interpretation of something it's hardly possible to completely own up to your own, and I hate being marginal in my own memory鈥攏ever mind that I will never truly know what a song meant in the moment of its birth, or in all the time it spent without but one listener. There is a fundamental chasm between the worlds of any two people and all words are mere approximation, blindly grasping for coherence.

It is doubly confounding to me that these are some thoughts that throw a bridge between myself and Luigi Pirandello. While known primarily as a playwright, Pirandello was always somewhat questioning鈥攊f not outrightly disdainful鈥攐f the form, fully aware of the impossibility of representation. This was, no doubt, a position shaped at least somewhat by the way in which Italian theatre emphasised the role of the actor at the expense of the writer. After all, most writers, engaged as they are in a solitary activity, seek a very different kind of collaboration in and through their work. The actor, on the other hand, displaces the writer鈥攁n idea Pirandello does implicitly toy with in Six Characters in Search of an Author.

I left a significant amount of time to fallow between first hearing about this play and actually sitting down to read it鈥攖ime enough with a title like this for the imagination to cultivate its own set of expectations. They weren't met as much as smashed, but with a rare sense of savour, for what Pirandello investigates through this play is the very question I'd been thinking and talking about at the time. In simple (and hence most enigmatic) words, it is coded as the human condition. However, Pirandello is more thorough and complex: he looks at that fundamental chasm in understanding, between understanding and existence, between change and stasis. It is hardly a wonder that the premiere performance of this play stirred up the controversy it did.

Six Characters in Search of an Author uses fantasy to hold up a mirror to reality, but what shocked contemporary audiences the most was its depiction and picking apart of a family, and doubly fictional at that. Incest and suicide do no better today than they did a hundred years ago (we have merely adopted a more clinical stance towards 'studying' these as 'themes'), and their forceful appearance on stage therefore remains intact, bolstered by a vague (and therefore powerful) denouement.

However, the genius of the play lies in the way it picks at the idea of the theatre, and by means of that, reality鈥攆or all the world is indeed a stage, compelling some to pull the strings and for all to play parts, however tangential they may be to the (one, none, and a hundred thousand) realities within and without. Having just started a 9 to 5 job, I was under the illusion that this is just Capitalism. However, given one cannot imagine a world without it鈥攖he only time the imagination really does fail us鈥攜et, it may as well be life itself, which it perhaps is. On Pirandello's stage, there are two plays, an inner play that reveals the drama of the characters' lives and an outer play where it is being reconstituted on stage with the producer and actors. In both cases, the drama serves as an illustration of a philosophy integral to the playwright's outlook on life and art.

The Six Characters look for an author (here, the producer) to write them, while people 'write our own destinies' and miss. Pirandello makes arguments for and against both these states of being, but the answer is in the ambiguity: reality or fiction? It is a recognition of multiplicity that drives this play鈥攖he same that drove Pessoa's ,鈥攁nd it is precisely this that will determine each individual's understanding of it. There cannot be an appropriate enough 'review' of this play in that sense, but I am glad I read it instead of choosing to watch it. This is purely for illusory reasons: Pirandello clearly shared some of my concerns about the loss of meaning that occurs in translation鈥攁nd in his own self-definition as a 'humourist' he decided to have actors on a stage (re)present them.

In his theory of Mimesis, Plato considered art as twice removed from reality. In Six Characters in Search of an Author, Pirandello examines how far reality is removed from its own true multiplicity. Understandably, then, no two readings (or stagings) of this story can be quite the same.

A brilliant, thought-provoking play.
