鈥�This is a story of innocence, of deception, and infinite grief.鈥�
鈥�Akhenaten lived for the truth,鈥� we are told, 鈥�and because of the truth he died.鈥� What is truth, however, and how do we determine it when all eye-witness accounts are contradictory, biases and potentially misleading. Is there even a way to know the absolute truth in history? These questions are at the heart of Egyptian author and Nobel Prize winner Naguib Mahfouz鈥檚 extraordinary Akhenaten: Dweller in Truth that follows a young man on his quest to learn who the former pharaoh, , truly was. Told from an objective narrator interviewing those around the now-deceased king a decade after his reign ended, this is a novel that looks at a singular story from fourteen different vantage points and opinions and asks the reader to make of them as they will. This is a book constructed almost entirely out of nuance and feels akin to 鈥檚 in execution as we see the same idea from varied perspectives.This would be a wonderful book for high school courses as it embodies the concept of information discernment and critical analysis of opinions to 鈥�see the many facets of truth鈥� and derive an educated guess as to what honestly occured. In an age of information overload, intentional misinformation and media relying heavily on opinion and incendiary headlines in our pay-per-click news cycles, this is a crucial skill to work on. Brief yet infinitely powerful, Mahfouz examines the idea of truth through a historical study of a legacy already ripe with contradictory opinions as either a visionary or heretic in his quest for abolition, rule based on love and peace, anti-war and to make the Egyptian empire monotheistic.

His books were banned in many countries, particularly which led to call for his death. After Mahfouz defended when a fatwa was placed on him, it renewed ire against Mahfouz again leading to him being stabbed in the neck by two failed-assassins in 1994. Mahfouz lived but had nerve damage for the rest of his life which was lived under constant protection from bodyguards. Not a lightweight, Mahfouz is a great example of authors who were not afraid to speak out even declaring 鈥�no blasphemy harms Islam and Muslims so much as the call for murdering a writer.鈥�
The story begins with Meriamum entering the dying city erected by Akhamaten during his rule. Once a great capitol it was now 鈥�a city droid of life, inert, possessed by silence, shadowed by gloom and the spirit of death,鈥� and also where the dead king鈥檚 wife, still lived as 鈥�a solitary prisoner sipping bitterness.鈥� With his father鈥檚 influence, Meriamum is able to interview those closest to Akhamaten because, like the subject of his research, he too dwells only in truth and lives by the idea spoken to him to 鈥�pass no judgement upon a matter until you have heard all testimonies.鈥� Frankly, I love this premise and that the narrator never intrudes, simply allowing the reader to take in all accounts (and ultimately decide for themselves as there is no real 鈥榗onclusion鈥� so to speak, merely the end of the interviews) in this record of opinions that feels akin to librarianship and intellectual freedom.
If you need a brief primer on Akhenaten, the crux of the issue was that he worshiped the sun god, Aten, instead of Amun and after hearing a voice from The One God, dedicated his life in service of this God. He went as far as banning all other deities (including changing his name from Amenhotep IV to Akhanaten as well as erasing all records of his father鈥檚 name on the pretext that the name means 鈥楢mun is Content鈥� though surely his strained relationship with his father is also at play) and attempting to change Egypt from a polytheistic society to a monotheistic one. Naturally, this irked the high priests who conspired against him. 鈥�He conceived of a god similar to himself in weakness and femininity, both father and mother,鈥� the High Priest of Amun says, 鈥�with no other purpose but love.鈥�
Love is important to Akhanaten鈥檚 view of the world, calling for complete abolition of punishment and prisons as well as removing taxes on the poor. It sounds great, right? But the powerful do not like this and set about ensuring it is sabotaged and chaos quickly spreads, Akhanaten detests the old pharaohs who 鈥�established [their] greatness on a pyramid of poor people鈥檚 corpses,鈥� and wants a land ruled by love and to 鈥�be God鈥檚 instrument to break the shackles of those who have no power.鈥� When enemies attack the border and military leaders call for troops, he sends them poems about love (okay I was really into that). When asked why he can鈥檛 enforce love with military power and punishment he replies that 鈥�vicious people and criminals always find an excuse to justify their third for blood.鈥� While some believe 鈥�anything is permissible if it will save the country鈥� it is said that he 鈥�believed in the means, not the end,鈥� and only used the throne to serve the purpose of his God.Published in 1985 while Egypt was under military rule, Mahfouz is really flexing here and calling out his government.
'Decipher his words, for only they bear the answers to your questions.'
You know right from the start that everything ends in tragedy. is given control by the High Priests and Akhamaten dies of sickness shortly after (or, as his physician suggests, was he poisoned after the High Priests banished him from the city and put their own physician in place?). Nefertiti leaves him right before this happens, which is the great mystery as to why that seems to come up in every testimony, leading us to Nefertiti鈥檚 story as the final chapter of the book. Each testimony is the same story but it is fascinatingly well nuanced between each perspective. We see a wide range of opinions, showing Akhamaten as anything from 鈥�pure essence of sweetness and benevolence鈥� to a ruler 鈥�of questionable birth, effeminate and grotesque鈥� that was 鈥�driven by shame and stigma to destroy himself and the country.鈥�
Notably the more (toxically) masculine characters dwell on the former ruler as feminine, some suggesting he was queer or possibly of both genders, and their opinions of Nefertiti tend to resent a woman for having a place of power and assume she was an evil and power hungry using religion as a political tool. The misogyny doubles down into classism as Nefertiti was not of royal birth with one character even asserting that her father, Ay, masterminded the whole thing to obtain the throne through the destruction of Egypt. Each character is biased and something Mahfouz does exceptionally well is have the most toxic characters end up revealing important details unknown until then, so you cannot completely discount their testimonies. Everyone has something to offer, everyone is biased in some way for a whole slew of reasons, everyone is unreliable yet through this mire of biases we must quest for truth.
Truth is shown to be quite ambiguous, just as much as any handle on who Akhamaten was is cloaked in nuanced mystery. While he is universally described as having unique and often a 鈥�repulsive appearance鈥�, there is much duality to him such as being said to be both or 鈥�neither man nor woman鈥�, an ambiguity in keeping with testimonies of his mental state as 鈥�he was neither mad nor sane like the rest of us. He was something in between.鈥� Questions of the validity of hearing the One God come up frequently, with characters saying as a man devoted to truth he never lied yet still disbelieving his account of the voice. What is particularly key here is that in a religion focused on icon and temples and other physical aspects, the One God appeared to him only as a voice with no form which is a radical departure from their belief systems. Mahfouz plays with progressive politics as much as he does the disconnect between tradition and modernism in religious beliefs.
鈥�He was a visionary promising a paradise irreconcilable with human nature. He confronted people with their mediocrity and provoked their deepest fears.鈥�
There is a highly Christian aspect to this novel too, with Akhamaten often feeling very Christ-like. His words often parallel those of Jesus, such as asking God why He 鈥�has forsaken me鈥�, his beliefs feel very much like those of Jesus and his death comes due to his threat to empire and High Priests. All of this feels very pointed in a 1985 novel as Mahfouz openly criticized Islamic extremism in the press, and Akhamaten often feels like a kindred spirit for the author (which, then, if we decide this, how objective of an interpretation to the many stories can we have and is this an authorial intent fallacy?)
Akhanaten: Dweller in Truth is a fabulous little novel. Clocking in at 168pgs this is easily read in a day but will dwell in your mind for many weeks to come. I finished it in one sitting I simply could not put it down. While the different voices could be a bit more distinguishable from one another, it does not detract and the cacophony of opinions makes for a really exciting way to address a single story. This is an excellent look at critical analysis of text and the ways we must decode history through contradictory information as well as a fascinating look into Egyptian history meant to resonate in the modern world. Highly recommended.

But the powerful do not like this and set about ensuring it is sabotaged and chaos quickly spreads, Akhanaten detests the old pharaohs who 鈥�established [their] greatness on a pyramid of poor people鈥檚 corpses,鈥� and wants a land ruled by love and to 鈥�be God鈥檚 instrument to break the shackles of those who have no power.鈥� When enemies attack the border and military leaders call for troops, he sends them poems about love (okay I was really into that). When asked why he can鈥檛 enforce love with military power and punishment he replies that 鈥�vicious people and criminals always find an excuse to justify their third for blood.鈥� While some believe 鈥�anything is permissible if it will save the country鈥� it is said that he 鈥�believed in the means, not the end,鈥� and only used the throne to serve the purpose of his God.Published in 1985 while Egypt was under military rule, Mahfouz is really flexing here and calling out his government.
'Decipher his words, for only they bear the answers to your questions.'
You know right from the start that everything ends in tragedy. is given control by the High Priests and Akhamaten dies of sickness shortly after (or, as his physician suggests, was he poisoned after the High Priests banished him from the city and put their own physician in place?). Nefertiti leaves him right before this happens, which is the great mystery as to why that seems to come up in every testimony, leading us to Nefertiti鈥檚 story as the final chapter of the book. Each testimony is the same story but it is fascinatingly well nuanced between each perspective. We see a wide range of opinions, showing Akhamaten as anything from 鈥�pure essence of sweetness and benevolence鈥� to a ruler 鈥�of questionable birth, effeminate and grotesque鈥� that was 鈥�driven by shame and stigma to destroy himself and the country.鈥�
Notably the more (toxically) masculine characters dwell on the former ruler as feminine, some suggesting he was queer or possibly of both genders, and their opinions of Nefertiti tend to resent a woman for having a place of power and assume she was an evil and power hungry using religion as a political tool. The misogyny doubles down into classism as Nefertiti was not of royal birth with one character even asserting that her father, Ay, masterminded the whole thing to obtain the throne through the destruction of Egypt. Each character is biased and something Mahfouz does exceptionally well is have the most toxic characters end up revealing important details unknown until then, so you cannot completely discount their testimonies. Everyone has something to offer, everyone is biased in some way for a whole slew of reasons, everyone is unreliable yet through this mire of biases we must quest for truth.
Truth is shown to be quite ambiguous, just as much as any handle on who Akhamaten was is cloaked in nuanced mystery. While he is universally described as having unique and often a 鈥�repulsive appearance鈥�, there is much duality to him such as being said to be both or 鈥�neither man nor woman鈥�, an ambiguity in keeping with testimonies of his mental state as 鈥�he was neither mad nor sane like the rest of us. He was something in between.鈥� Questions of the validity of hearing the One God come up frequently, with characters saying as a man devoted to truth he never lied yet still disbelieving his account of the voice. What is particularly key here is that in a religion focused on icon and temples and other physical aspects, the One God appeared to him only as a voice with no form which is a radical departure from their belief systems. Mahfouz plays with progressive politics as much as he does the disconnect between tradition and modernism in religious beliefs.
鈥�He was a visionary promising a paradise irreconcilable with human nature. He confronted people with their mediocrity and provoked their deepest fears.鈥�
There is a highly Christian aspect to this novel too, with Akhamaten often feeling very Christ-like. His words often parallel those of Jesus, such as asking God why He 鈥�has forsaken me鈥�, his beliefs feel very much like those of Jesus and his death comes due to his threat to empire and High Priests. All of this feels very pointed in a 1985 novel as Mahfouz openly criticized Islamic extremism in the press, and Akhamaten often feels like a kindred spirit for the author (which, then, if we decide this, how objective of an interpretation to the many stories can we have and is this an authorial intent fallacy?)
Akhanaten: Dweller in Truth is a fabulous little novel. Clocking in at 168pgs this is easily read in a day but will dwell in your mind for many weeks to come. I finished it in one sitting I simply could not put it down. While the different voices could be a bit more distinguishable from one another, it does not detract and the cacophony of opinions makes for a really exciting way to address a single story. This is an excellent look at critical analysis of text and the ways we must decode history through contradictory information as well as a fascinating look into Egyptian history meant to resonate in the modern world. Highly recommended.

Let鈥檚 go back to the time of the Pharaohs. Incongruously, the main character is kind of what we would call an investigative journalist; a young man who simply wants to interview all those around the recently deceased pharaoh, Akhenaten, to find out about him and the scandals surrounding his reign. He is able to do this because his father is a well-connected high official in the Egyptian bureaucracy and the father gives his son a letter of introduction to all these folks. The young man interviews Akhenaten鈥檚 mother, tutor, family doctor, army leader, religious leader, bodyguard, and so on, culminating with the late Pharaoh鈥檚 wife Nefertiti.
A bit of Egyptian history: Akhenaten was born Amenhotep IV, husband of Nefertiti and father of Tutankhamen. Akhenaten was regarded as an aberration among the Pharaohs. He was slight of build, effeminate, almost androgynous; a flower child who was uninterested in war and believed love could conquer all. He married a commoner, Nefertiti, the daughter of his tutor. What really got him in trouble, was that he was an early believer in what might be called monotheism. Before him, Egyptians believed in multiple gods for different features of nature and for different cities and regions of the country. Akhenaten believed in a single superior god, the sun-god, Aten (thus his name change). It was not quite monotheism because he still believed in multiple lesser gods.
The scandals that developed were easy to see coming. The priests were almost as powerful as the Pharaoh and they did not want their power and sources of income messed with. The military thought him a weakling who let Egypt鈥檚 enemies encroach on its borders without opposition. After Akhenaten鈥檚 early death (which may have been murder) official Egyptian records referred to him as 鈥渢he criminal鈥� or 鈥渢he enemy.鈥� Religious practices gradually returned to what they were and Akhenaten鈥檚 name was chiseled out of monuments and temples to his god were destroyed. The young man doing the interviewing finds opinions and feelings running the gamut from those who loved Akhenaten to those who hated him. A lot of the focus of the interviewer鈥檚 questioning is on whether or not the informant truly converted to belief in the one god or just went along simply to hold on to their positions.
The book is certainly is a novel approach to what could be called not a historical novel, but historical fiction. The author, Mahfouz is regarded as the classic man of Egyptian letters and the one who brought the modern novel to Egyptian readers. Akhenaten believed in a single superior god, the sun-god, Aten (thus his name change). It was not quite monotheism because he still believed in multiple lesser gods.
The scandals that developed were easy to see coming. The priests were almost as powerful as the Pharaoh and they did not want their power and sources of income messed with. The military thought him a weakling who let Egypt鈥檚 enemies encroach on its borders without opposition. After Akhenaten鈥檚 early death (which may have been murder) official Egyptian records referred to him as 鈥渢he criminal鈥� or 鈥渢he enemy.鈥� Religious practices gradually returned to what they were and Akhenaten鈥檚 name was chiseled out of monuments and temples to his god were destroyed. The young man doing the interviewing finds opinions and feelings running the gamut from those who loved Akhenaten to those who hated him. A lot of the focus of the interviewer鈥檚 questioning is on whether or not the informant truly converted to belief in the one god or just went along simply to hold on to their positions.
The book is certainly is a novel approach to what could be called not a historical novel, but historical fiction. The author, Mahfouz is regarded as the classic man of Egyptian letters and the one who brought the modern novel to Egyptian readers. Der 盲gyptische Nobelpreistr盲ger Machfus ist eher bekannt f眉r zeitgen枚ssische nordafrikanische Literatur. Echnaton ist dagegen eher ein historischer Roman 眉ber einen der au脽ergew枚hnlichsten Pharaos. Er war ein Revolution盲r, ein Freigeist, der Liebe und der Kunst zugetan, aber auch ein Zerst枚rer der Zeugnisse der Vergangenheit, ein Gegner seiner Vorg盲nger, die ein anderen Gottesbild hatten, kleingewachsen mit weibischen Z眉gen und der sch枚nsten Ehefrau, die es zu dieser Zeit gab: Nofretete. Er baute sich seine eigene Herrschaftsstadt n枚rdlich von Theben und brachte aufgrund seines Pazifismus 脛gypten beinahe den Untergang.
Das ist schon eine au脽ergew枚hnliche Vita. Machfus l盲sst sie durch investigativen Journalismus aufarbeiten, denn ein junger Ich-Erz盲hler erh盲lt wenige Jahre nach dem Tod Echnatons die M枚glichkeit, sich mit den Weggef盲hrten und Gegnern zu unterhalten. Besser gesagt, er gibt ihnen in den jeweiligen nach ihnen benannten Kapiteln die M枚glichkeit, in ausgedehnten Monologen ihre Erlebnisse mit Echnaton zu erz盲hlen. Was in den ersten Kapiteln erfrischend ungew枚hnlich f眉r die Zeit klingt und das Bild Echnatons wie ein Puzzle zusammen setzen l盲sst, begann ab der Mitte des Buchs mich zu langweilen, denn ob G盲rtner, Polizeichef, Schw盲gerin oder Heeresf眉hrer, es kommen keine nennenswerten Erkenntnisse hinzu. Man liebte oder hasste ihn. Und so erwartet man sehns眉chtig das letzte Kapitel, in dem seine Frau Nofretete das Wort hat. Sie muss doch die Wahrheit bez眉glich der widerspr眉chlichen Aussagen kennen. Doch leider ist ihre von Liebe gepr盲gt Sicht auf den Mann, der mit Aton einen neuen Gott an oberster Stelle im Reich setzte, auch nur ein subjektiver Blick auf das Geschehen.
Angetan von der Idee und entt盲uschend von am Ende geringer werdenden Leseerlebnis l盲sst mich das Buch irgendwie lauwarm zur眉ck. Ich habe es aber trotzdem nicht bereut, aus dem 枚ffentlichen B眉cherschrank genommen zu haben.

On the Nile at full seasonal flood, the narrator, Meriamun, and his father drift past the abandoned city of Akhetaten, Pharoah Akhenaten's once beautiful capital, which he had created after abandoning Thebes. The son asks the father, who is connected at court, to write letters of reference for him so that he might interview those who were involved with the "heretic" king. Mahfouz is admirably swift in establishing the core conflict. Amun is the main God of Egypt, but after Akhenaten's beloved brother dies in the face of Amun's perceived indifference Akhenaten turns to Aten, the sun god. He becomes a zealous monotheist among politically connected polytheists. Not only that, but he prohibits religious pluralism and disperses the priesthoods and assets of the old gods. Now all of Amun's very powerful priests are out on their ears and they are not pleased. When Akhenaten's father dies he ascends to Pharoah and all his new ministers are more than happy to swear alliegiance to Aten. When reports arrive that enemies are attacking the borders, and corruption is overtaking his officials, the new king discounts the news by saying that his "love" has yet to have its effect. "Soon you will see the tree of love heavy with fruit," he says. There is an intimation of homosexuality, perhaps none more stark than that last phrase, but it's beside the point. Akhenaten is a kind of a second millenium BC prophet, in contact with his one god, while all around him the people high and low indulge their polytheistic beliefs. His message of victorious love seems like something from the Summer of Love. It's at such moments that one wonders how close Mahfouz hews to the archaeological record. Multiple first-person narrators tell the story of the "heretic" king. Some love him, some hate him, but all are in one way or another biased. It is the reader's job to sort out the real Akhenaten from all this passionate distortion. This book dipped down and restored me when I felt empty. It floated past, a tacit invitation to climb aboard. The subject is both ancient and timeless. A pharaoh catches the bug of a new religion and insists everyone join him. Everyone from the generals and the priests on down bristle; most find that the man, the titular Akhenaten, has lost it. They also blame his queen Nefertiti.

Mahfouz鈥檚 Akhenaten: Dweller in Truth is a wonderful use of historical fiction by a masterful author to bring to life the brief reign of Akhenaten in ancient Egypt. I recall learning of Akhenaten when I was young; he was the 鈥渟un king鈥� who believed in one god, unlike his contemporaries. But that was all I knew.
This novel is structured as a journey by a young man, years after Akhenaten鈥檚 death, to learn from that king鈥檚 contemporaries just what the pharaoh and his rule was like, what happened to alienate him from the priests, what led to his downfall and the end of his reign. To do this, Meriamun talked with friends, family, enemies of Akhenaten, with past members of his government. In all, he interviews fourteen men and women, including the former queen, Nefertiti.
The essence of the interviews is the varying pictures they reveal of Akhenaten, and of subjects themselves with their possible motives, in the past and the present. It鈥檚 interesting to read the shifts in view of Akhenaten from deformed, effeminate, unnatural heretic to loving, prayerful, enlightened king trying to lead people to his god. While I know this is fiction, I enjoyed the multiple views that allow some form to take shape (realizing that the true person is unknowable).
While reading, I was often struck by contemporary parallels as we often try to analyze public figures through multiple testimonies. And I think of Mahfouz doing the same since he wrote of many political, cultural, philosophical, and religious movements in novels such as the Cairo Trilogy.
Akhenaten is actually a short novel, a few reviews have called it slight. But I think it accomplishes much, especially for someone like myself, with limited knowledge of Egyptian history. It brought ancient history alive for me. Beyond that, I think it adds to the old adage ... those who do not know history will be condemned to repeat it (or words to that effect).

Miri-Mon se encontraba en un viaje por el Nilo con su padre, cuando vio una ciudad magnifica a lo lejos y quizo saber cual era su nombre y porque estaba vac铆a. Su padre le conto la historia del Rey Hereje, y desde ese momento Miri-Mon decidi贸 que tenia que conocer la historia completa, si es posible contada por sus propios protagonistas, ya que muchos todav铆a se encontraban con vida. De esa forma llego a entrevistar a mas de 10 personas que, en vida, tuvieron conocimientos de primera mano de la vida y muerte del que fue llamado el Rey Hereje, el Rey Akhenaton y su Reina Nefertiti.
Comence este libro sin muchas ilusiones, porque no soy muy fan de la ficci贸n-historica, pero el autor es un ganador de Premio Nobel, as铆 que sabia que por lo menos seria una historia bien escrita y atrapante. Pero no me esperaba para nada la forma como el autor logro que entendiera, aceptara y hasta compadeciera a los protas de la historia (los Reyes Akhenaton y Nefertiti). Pero tambi茅n entendiera y aceptara el punto de vista del resto de los personajes, quienes nos contaron sus esperanzas y temores sobre un reinado de un hombre que a muchos le parecia "abominable" por su aspecto femenino y delgado en una cultura donde los hombres deb铆an ser fuertes y poderosos.
En fin, fue una excelente lectura, muy bien llevada que te deja con la curiosidad de saber la verdadera historia de este Rey y el porque su ca铆da, de leer otras cosas del autor.

A young man wishes to find out the truth about Akhenaten, the monotheistic pharaoh, whose new faith in the god Aten, did not outlast him nor did the beautiful city he had built in the god's honor. With a letter of introduction to various erstwhile members of the court, the narrator gets a more complete picture of Akhenaten. Each person whom he interviews and tells their impressions of the man, has a different opinion about the man and various facets of his life. Some, such as Ay, the counsellor, and the Aten high priest have nothing but good to say. Others, although they had given lip service to that religion, denigrated him after his death, calling him insane. Each has a different theory on why his wife, the beautiful Nefertiti, left him. Some felt he had died of natural causes and others, that he had been murdered. Sort of a Rashomon-type story set in ancient Egypt.

Among those Meriamun interviews are a high priest of the established religion, Akhenaten鈥檚 mother, his in-laws, friends, physician, military leader, and body guard. He concludes his investigation by traveling to Akhenaten鈥檚 now deteriorating city and interviewing his wife, Nefertiti, a virtual prisoner in the palace.

Although he was initially willing to accept the presence of other gods, once he became a pharaoh, he set about trying to eradicate the worship of other gods by destroying their temples and erasing their names from monuments. His action was considered heresy, especially by those within the establishment who stood to profit financially from Egypt鈥檚 polytheistic culture.
Not surprisingly, the portrait of Akhenaten that emerges is multi-faceted. He was labeled a heretic, weak, effeminate, a mad man who posed a serious threat to the state, and a fool who believed in the power of love to overcome adversity. Others describe him as highly intelligent, spiritual, gentle, kind, compassionate toward the weak and poor, and a divinely inspired believer in the one God. Each perspective adds a subtle detail or nuance to the portrait. But what emerges from the prism of each interview reveals more about the interviewee than Akhenaten, himself.
