The Sickness is a novel about a doctor, his father, the doctor鈥檚 secretary and one obsessed hypochondriac. But mostly it is about sickness. The novel concerns a perfectly healthy man convinced he is gravely ill and a very sick man who doesn鈥檛 know he has terminal cancer because his own son and doctor cannot bring himself to break the news.
Dr Miranda is a believer in telling the truth, whole truth and nothing but the truth. He has always advocated a no-nonsense approach towards the patients and has never had any difficulties 鈥� until now, when the patient is his father and he has to tell him he only has a few weeks to live.
Meanwhile in the background, another patient of his, Ernesto Dur谩n, is convinced he is dying and resorts to stalking his doctor who ignores him and his pleas. Dr Miranda鈥檚 secretary using her boss鈥檚 absent-mindedness passes herself off as her boss and engages in email correspondence with Dur谩n. It soon metamorphoses itself from an innocent pastime into a dangerous sickness as well. While Dr Miranda is trying to find the right words to say to his father, his patient and his secretary are slowly going mad.
You might argue that 150 pages is not quite enough to tackle such a difficult subject as life, sickness and death. And you might also argue that a couple of months isn鈥檛 enough to come to terms with our own mortality. Sadly, sometimes it鈥檚 all we are going to be given. Death won鈥檛 wait until we are ready and the book鈥檚 brevity could easily be interpreted as a symbol of our fleeting nature.
Alberto Barrera Tyszka made the best of his 150 pages partly thanks to his knack for saying what鈥檚 important in little quips like this one:
鈥淏lood is a terrible gossip, it tells everything鈥�
It is also clear that he has done his homework and read everything that was produced on the subject of sickness in the history of the written word. And he wants you to know it, so the book is peppered with clumsy interjections such as:
鈥淧erhaps he鈥榮 remembering that novel by Louis Ferdinand C茅line, in which a doctor 鈥榙escribed illness as he would describe a face of an old acquaintance鈥�. That is what weighs on Andr茅s now.鈥�
This is really the only fault of this otherwise good novel which meanders slowly around the events. Suspense has been sacrificed to sadness and the melancholy of things calmly burning out.
It should be a compulsory read on the subject which is becoming more and more intimidating and difficult to deal with within our society.

I picked this book up in the library purely on the strength of the Maclehose Press spine, knowing nothing about the book or the Venezuelan author.
Its protagonist Andr茅s Miranda is a hospital doctor. At the start of the book he learns that his father's cancer is fatal, but struggles to find a way to tell him. The other main strand concerns a persistent hypochondriac patient whose attempts to contact Miranda are frustrated by his secretary, who eventually takes pity on him and starts replying to his emails as if she is the doctor. There are elements of gentle comedy in both strands, and the resolution is quite moving.

Barrera Tyszka tiene una forma de escribir absolutamente particular. Escribe, en cierta forma, dibujando, evocando. Como si leerlo fuera un ejercicio constante de alusi贸n, de rememoraci贸n. Y cuando ese forma de escribir se junta con un tema tan fatal e ineludible como la enfermedad y la muerte, el resultado es un texto destructor a la misma vez que hermoso. Es un libro terminal, una lectura que deja un sabor amargo de fragilidad en la boca. El asunto de nuestra mortalidad siempre me ha fascinado, por las razones obvias. No podr铆a decir lo mismo del asunto de la enfermedad; el conocimiento de sabernos tan vulnerables, tan fr谩giles, tan f谩ciles de ser heridos o da帽ados (incluso por nuestros propios organismos), me infunde un temor peor que el temor natural a lo desconocido.
En fin, es un libro que recomendar铆a con mucho cautela.

Un libro intenso ed introspettivo in cui come dice il titolo la vera protagonista 猫 la malattia, scandagliata in tutti i suoi aspetti: da quello strettamente fisico e materiale a quello pi霉 filosofico ed astratto; in mezzo, tutte le emozioni ed i pensieri che una sentenza del genere pu貌 suscitare nel malato e in chi gli sta intorno.
Il punto di vista 猫 principalmente quello di Andr茅s, un medico che scopre che suo padre ha un cancro all'ultimo stadio. Da qui abbiamo una prima parte in cui dibatte se dirglielo o meno ed una seconda in cui ormai le carte sono in tavola e la malattia inizia il suo decorso fino all'inevitabile epilogo. La trama 猫 tutta qui, ma la mancanza di azione 猫 compensata da riflessioni profonde che toccano i temi pi霉 svariati: i rapporti familiari, la mortalit脿 umana ed il valore della verit脿, per citarne solo alcuni.
Nota a parte per la storia parallela di Ernesto D霉ran, un malato immaginario, che inizialmente mi aveva intrigato ma di cui poi non ho capito pi霉 il senso: a libro concluso la ritengo una digressione evitabile che ha tolto spazio a momenti pi霉 significativi.
Un romanzo che non si pu貌 definire piacevole visto l'argomento trattato e che forse ogni tanto si parla un po' addosso, ma ha comunque il merito di aver trovato il giusto equilibrio tra la morbosit脿 e l'idealizzazione, fornendoci una descrizione realistica della malattia.

Through these characters, the novel explores people's different ways of dealing with sickness; how sickness affects patients and those who surround them.
The novel is really good in most parts, but some parts just felt awkward or unnecessary, like the literary references, and most of the doctors inner thoughts about medicine, I don't know, they just didn't feel right.

"Tears are very unliterary: they have no form."
This is possibly the most dog-eared book I've ever had. Folding down corners is my method for marking significant (to me) passages, but it clearly wasn't working with this fiction novel because I was marking every page. I'd never read this Venezuelan author before, but I hope to find more of his work translated into English.
Delicate prose, deep moral questions, and a stunning pace are what kept me hooked into reading this in one sitting. The story itself is rather simple: a successful doctor discovers that his father is seriously ill. Their close relationship is strained as the son weighs the consequences of telling his father the details of his illness. In the meantime, another man, virtually unknown to the doctor, begins stalking him, imagining that he holds the cure for the the list of complaints he suffers from. There's a push and pull to the narrative, as the poignant moments between father and son,nuanced with shared memories of grief, intertwine with the creepy certainty of the stalker.
Because of the health issues that permeate the novel, questions about the nature of health and wellness are explored, but in a brief, compelling way. The author cites quotes of famous authors, ethicists and physicians, but he's not showing off, they are actually appropriate observations of how the human body deals with illness. These asides never go too long or feel like a lecture, they fit the material in the most uncanny way.
For example, Tyszka quotes Julio Ramon Ribeyro, who provides possibly the best explanation for the euphoria that exists after an episode of physical pain:
"Physical pain is the great regulator of our passions and ambitions. Its presence immediately neutralizes all other desires apart from the desire for the pain to go away. This life that we reject because it seems to us boring, unfair, mediocre or absurd suddenly seems priceless: we accept it as it is, with all its defects, as long as it doesn't present itself to us in its vilest form - pain."
Tsyzka presents simple scenes with insightful observation. On trying to read the face of a doctor while awaiting possibly bad news:
"It's the illustration that accompanies a bad diagnosis, the first installment of an expression of condolence."
On imagining his father's worries:
"Are the monsters of old age as terrible as those that assail us when we're children? What do you dream about when you're sixty-nine? ....Perhaps this is what his father dreams about: he's in a laboratory, in the bowels of a hospital, surrounded by chemicals, sharp implements, gauze, and strangers all repellently dressed in white...."
Events proceed in unexpected ways, and as a reader, you never quite know what direction you're being pulled in. You feel empathy and disgust in altering passages, and the underlying fear is riveting. I did find the ending a bit confusing...I still am not sure I've understood all the implications laid out.
One scene confounds me: It takes place on a ferry, where an obnoxious businessman makes a production of his 'importance' and maltreats his seemingly intelligent and kind wife, all the way to the point of beating her to the ground. I'm not sure what the symbolism is, although I know it's present in that scene. Is Tyszka trying to say that people are subject to humiliation, by oppression or illness, no matter how virtuous they are?
In full, this is easily going to be in my list of favorites for the year. While the subject revolves around illness, it never quite defines which 'illness' is being addressed: is it disease? regret? evil? The questions are posed, and only each individual reader can answer.

Ci ho riflettuto a lungo, tante nuove idee, pensieri e riflessioni che per qualche giorno non avevano una vera e propria predominanza. Nel senso che, ci ho pensato, ma non avrei dovuto pensarci cos矛 tanto. Perch猫 quando mi imbatto nella lettura di certi testi, di romanzi che sono fili invisibili e instabili, in bilico fra la vita e la morte, non posso fare a meno di sentirmi coinvolta, talmente presa che mi pongo al posto dei personaggi, di queste figure che si mossero dinanzi al mio personalissimo cerchio, e mi sento鈥� strana. Mi sento come fossi un pesce fuor d鈥檃cqua, la cui vita 猫 scorta tranquillamente, sino a questo momento, senza dover tenere conto dell鈥檌mprevedibilit脿 del Destino. Di sorprese, di allarmismi vari, la vita ce ne riserva a non finire, ma di morte鈥� Alla morte non ci penso cos矛 spesso! La vita dopo la morte, del suo sentirsi avulsi e fagocitati, nel momento in cui ogni cosa avr脿 fine, in cui bisogna imparare e fare peso degli anni trascorsi e passati, era un tipo di questione cui non avevo mai prestato cos矛 tanta attenzione come adesso. Andr猫s Miranda, nel momento in cui seppe che il suo amato padre stava per lasciare questa terra, si chiese tutto questo. Con l'approssimarsi del mese di aprile, accettando la sfida letteraria indetta su Facebook, avevo preso in mano la situazione, avevo cominciato a guardarmi intorno con altri occhi. Sarebbe stata una storia dal sapore dolce amaro a fiondarmi fra le pagine di un romanzo che non conoscevo, ma che han ben dodici anni, con un certo disagio, ma anche una certa luce, potenzialit脿, rinascita. Questo <> mi fece scoprire e, con gli anni, apprezzare la vita in generale, con una maturit脿 o una consapevolezza maggiore, se non fosse che qualche anno fa ho dovuto riprenderla in mano. Forse qualcosa dentro di me esigeva un ricordo, ed ecco che leggo di un padre prostrato dal cancro.... per farmi ricordare. Santo cielo, pensavo proprio un bel ricordo!
Eppure, questo consumarsi lentamente fra la vita e la morte mi era entrato sotto pelle, quel treno che conduce al paradiso che si impantana in stazioni umidi e soffocanti, non in maniera spropositata ma nemmeno ridotta, mi dava pensiero. E' un po' quel genere di domanda che ancora la scienza non riesce a dare una risposta, anche se penso che la catena di eventi che determinano il nostro personale destino dipenda proprio da noi stessi. Ho avuto l'impressione di assistere ai vani salti di un acrobata che volteggia per aria tra un trapezio e un altro... finch茅 una delle sbarre manca alla presa. Cos矛 la mia mente concepiva la condizione di un uomo qualunque, precipitando nel vuoto.
Ero consapevole che, pur con tutto l'entusiasmo che avevo riposto nell鈥檃bbracciare questo testo, non potevo seriamente ignorare l'ipotesi di sprofondare, giorno dopo giorno, in un sotterraneo buio in cui non avrei trovato limiti, da cui non conosco la fine e che forse non aveva via d'uscita. Forse ero io stessa vittima di un grande tormento interiore, ma la situazione era questa: triste, irrimediabile. Certamente Andres avrebbe trovato la giusta strada per conferire al padre la pace, ma non riuscivo a capacitarmi del perch茅 la vita sia cos矛 ingiusta. Mettere fine anche alla sua produzione di cellule impazzite. E il solo fatto che dovessi assistere impotente a tutto ci貌 aumenta il fastidio che il mio aiuto non sarebbe servito a niente.
Con la mia solita poltrona preferita, su cui partii all'ultimo minuto, mentre il sole stava per tramontare, planai in un luogo le cui pareti erano bianche immacolate e profumate di candeggina. In un mondo che non era poi cos矛 lontano dal mio ma in cui mi sono persa completamente. Camminando lungo la riva dell鈥檃ssurdo, osservando impunemente queste povere anime, dando l'impressione di essere rinchiusi in un guscio.
Presi tutta questa tenerezza come qualcosa di infinitamente dolce. E leggere La malattia, dunque, ha alimentato ricordi deteriorati dal tempo, che si infrangono come un'onda sulle sponde del tempo. Il desiderio di voler tornare indietro nel tempo per spazzare via tutta la tristezza, ma con la sensazione che, se lo avrebbero fatto, se ne sarebbe andata anche la gioia. Quale tipo di gioia? Semplice, quella incastonata in quegli ultimi attimi da trascorrere. O, i ricordi che vengono assimilati e accettati come una condanna, lasciandoli che li guidino tutte le volte che si affacciano alla loro memoria.
Ho avvertito questo forte sentimento d鈥檃ngoscia, di repulsione, di ritrosia propagarsi sulla mia pelle come espressione di idee, emozioni e sentimenti dei protagonisti o metafora di solidariet脿 e conforto. Una lettura cruda, intensa ma algida e inavvicinabile che nonostante parli di vita e di morte, genera compassione ma non emoziona. Non giunge a piena maturazione n茅 a penetrare membrana dopo membrana nel cuore di chi legge, perch茅 dal palcoscenico artificioso della vita si osserva la clessidra del tempo scorrere come in un palmo di una mano. Troppo impegnati a rendere prezioso ogni attimo concesso. Osannare l'amore intenso di un padre che dovr脿 abbandonarsi a un destino cos矛 crudele e egoista, che lo condurr脿 dinanzi a una strada che non 猫 pi霉 in salita ma in discesa.
Guazzabuglio di immagini dalle diverse tonalit脿, serie di sfumature, dalle pi霉 chiare a quelle pi霉 scure o viceversa, ritratto umano terribilmente realistico e coinvolgente di protagonisti soli e incompresi, La malattia 猫 un cuore debole che ancora palpita in cui possiamo riconoscere un pezzo di noi stessi, scovare un fondo di verit脿 in pensieri che fagocitano, dilaniano con irruenza e impetuosit脿.
Una mattina ci si sveglia, e devi fare i conti con la consapevolezza che da un momento all鈥檃ltro potresti morire perch猫 non ci sono pi霉 vie d'uscita. Dio, cos矛 buono e onnipotente, a quanto pare si 猫 dimenticato di vegliare su di te, ed ha inferto il suo colpo come un forte fendente. Poco dopo, in un momento di rabbia eretica, senza pensarci troppo stermini tutta la schiera di parenti, amici o conoscenti che si avventano pur di darti conforto, compassione, toccando la tua preziosa sensibilit脿 come un tesoro inestimabile. E鈥� uno dei pi霉 ridicoli atti di comprensione, pi霉 silenziosi e perbene che possano mai essere rivolti, poich猫 nessuno comprender脿 effettivamente come ti senti. Chi o cosa vorrebbe il tuo cuore. Eppure, vivere al presente vuol dire anche questo: non capire quel miracoloso moltiplicarsi di anime penitenti che si raggruppano esclusivamente in un momento come questo, anzich猫 quando ci si guarda attorno, e consapevoli della solitudine, fiero di non dover dipendere da niente e nessuno.
Andr猫s Miranda, nel momento in cui seppe che il suo amato padre stava per lasciare questa terra, si chiese tutto questo. Si chiese cosa abbia voluto dire conoscere la medicina entro i limiti e i poteri della natura, cosa avrebbe dovuto dirgli nel momento in cui avrebbe avuto una diagnosi effettiva, come prolungare le sue atroci sofferenze purch猫 la Donna della Falce lo avrebbe abbracciato quietamente. La malattia che ha intaccato il suo unico padre era come una camera a gas, zeppo di medicine somministrate che avrebbero comportato effetti, benefici e non, sbuffando nell鈥檃tmosfera soffocanti nuvole di rimorso e rancore. Avendo a che fare con malati, giorno dopo giorno, non credendo che nel momento lo avrebbe toccato da vicino non voleva crederci. Il suo cuore era divenuto un pantano, invaso da pensieri foschi e da turbamenti che colpiscono a fondo come una magagna.

I didn't like the omniscient narration. I didn't like the use of the present tense. I didn't like the frequent quoting of other writer's material by the omniscient narrator, in what seemed to be a plucking of bricks from the fourth wall. I also didn't find the book that inspired or inspiring. However, this latter may be because I read about health and healthcare 5-days a week, and I recognize that others may well find the book both of these things. Plus, I did like it more as it progressed, and I did find it quite a compulsive read, and middlingly poignant. I think I'd have been more impressed with it if I'd read less of what I've read at work over the past year. Having said that, my annoyances would remain. So, three stars.

Este es un libro conmovedor, realista y tambi茅n un poco tr谩gico, que te atrapa desde la primera p谩gina. En 茅l encontraremos dos historias, la de un hijo que intenta comunicar a su padre una verdad que lo sit煤a en un callej贸n sin salida y la de un paciente que busca respuestas en todas partes para dar con la cura de su enfermedad.
Con un lenguaje sencillo, fresco, como si se tratara de una conversaci贸n con amigos, Alberto Barrera nos introduce en estas historias entretejidas y nos muestra de manera muy humana una realidad ineludible a la que todos debemos enfrentarnos: la muerte. As铆 pues, de la mano de Andr茅s Miranda recorreremos los pasillos del hospital y tambi茅n los temores e incertidumbres de esa relaci贸n m茅dico-paciente.
La estructura del libro es sencilla, no busca impresionarnos con juegos y recursos literarios muy elaborados, sino que nos introduce de lleno en el problema. La trama est谩 dividida en dos partes y gracias a su extensi贸n breve y su forma de contar tan adictiva, se puede leer muy f谩cilmente.
Los personajes est谩n muy bien construidos y logran transmitir desde el inicio de la historia, sus pensamientos, miedos y aspiraciones, de manera que es dif铆cil no sentirse identificado con lo que cuentan o en un punto, sentir tambi茅n su dolor.
芦La enfermedad禄 es un libro que nos enfrenta con el temor a la enfermedad y a la muerte, a aquello que no podemos controlar, al paso del tiempo, a la fragilidad del ser humano, a las verdades y lo que callamos, a lo que decimos y lo que somos capaces de soportar. Es un libro directo, que no se guarda nada y que pone en manifiesto que nunca se est谩 preparado para recibir a la muerte.

The main focus is on the relationship between Dr. Andr茅s Miranda and his father, who is unaware he is dying from cancer. Andr茅s has always believed he should be frank with his patients about the severity of their illness, but is conflicted when it comes to talking to his father.
Alongside this is the story of Ernesto Dur谩n, a former patient who Andr茅s dismissed as a hypochondriac, whose desperate emails are secretly answered by his secretary in Andr茅s' name.
A short novel with a hefty punch, dealing with death, mortality, deception of self and others, and the blurred boundary between deception and realism, and how we use both, wilfully or otherwise, to navigate life and impending death.
