این کتاب نخستین متن اساسی در ارائهٔ یک بررسی جامع از علوم شناختی در معنای کامل آن است. رویکرد ویژۀ هره به علوم شناختی، رویکردی ترکیبی است: میان دو قطب اصلی موجود در علوم شناختی، یعنی رویکرد گفتمانی محض از یک سو و رویکرد عصب‌زیست‌شناخت�� محض از سوی دیگر، رویکردی میانه وجود دارد که در آن سه دستور زبان شخص‌بنیاد�� اندامواره‌بنیا�� و ملکول‌‌بنیا�� با یکدیگر همساز می‌شون��. برای رسیدن به چنین تعادلی، هره در فصول مختلف کتاب نخست می‌کوش�� هستی‌شناس�� واقع‌گرایان�� و قابل‌دفاع�� برای روان‌شناس�� و علوم شناختی فراهم آورد. آنگاه از خلال معرفی ابزارهایی مفهومی، مانند مدل، دستور زبان، معنا، جهت‌مندی�� هنجارمندی و موضع‌مندی�� نوعی مطالعۀ غیرتقلیل‌گرایان�� و غیرشیء‌انگاران�� از قلمرو انسان و جهان اجتماعی او پیشنهاد می‌کن��. دست آخر، نشان می‌ده�� که این برنامۀ پیشنهادی چگونه می‌توان�� با نمونه‌ه�� و مسائل انضمامی و ملموس روبه‌ر�� شود و در کجا از رویکردهای رایج فاصله می‌گیر��.

Rom Harré

Rom Harré was Distinguished Professor in the Psychology Department of Georgetown University in Washington DC, and the Director of the Centre for Philosophy of Natural and Social Science in London. He was for many years the University Lecturer in Philosophy of Science at Oxford and Fellow of Linacre College. He began his career in mathematics and physics, turning later to the foundations of psychology. His research was directed to the use of models and other kinds of non-formal reasoning in the sciences, as well as a long series of studies on the role of causal powers and agency concepts in both natural and human sciences. He held Visiting Professorships in many places, including Australia, Spain and Japan. He was Honorary President of the International Society for the Philosophy of Chemistry.
