Inhabit: Instructions for Autonomy

Rate this book
Inhabit is a manifesto for a new revolutionary movement for autonomy.

Inhabit is a collectively and anonymously written strategy emerging from a network of autonomous projects across North America.

We bring together diverse strands of American thinking, activism, and hands-on experimentation into a radical vision in keeping with our tumultuous times. We believe revolution has to be built from the ground up, and that it starts by making another way of life possible.

This is part poem, part imaginary exercise, part guidelines for collectively-minded survivalists. It's an attempt to begin to imagine how the world might look if nation states continue to fragment, if society is even more policed and militarized, the mass extinction event we find ourselves in continues to roll on, and we decided to organize autonomously. It's a more lively image than the sad and lonely preppers, who stash canned food in their basement and distrust any human bonds beyond the family. It's also a way to imagine revolution not as taking power, which is almost always taking state power, but instead build power in a much more fragmented way (what they call hubs). The text commands a lot (literally, much of the text is written in imperatives), but all these commands are just as much questions, or tasks to figure out. No one knows how to do this shit, but we have to figure out. Inhabit gives us a pretty good list of tasks to begin organizing around.

This book literally changed my life. I happened to read this on March 2020, during the peak of the pandemic and in the midst of all the lockdowns. I was sitting on the garden bench of our old house, under our mango tree, a few minutes to sunset.

I happened to come across this while doomscrolling through the comments section of a random group on Facebook. I remember reading everything in one sitting, writing down on my journal to take notes, and crying with the despair and hope of it all.

This was my gateway to reading more revolutionary A texts. It has helped shape my politics and my beliefs towards something more hopeful, more capable of joy and love and freedom.

Also, wow, I just realized-- I think this book *cue domino meme template* may have led me to meet the love of my life. I was already A-leaning around 2020 due to this book, and I started becoming more interested in knowing more local A groups. He happened to be part of one, and we met at an environmental protest and became friends/comrades for a couple of years. We've officially been together for 2 years now.

OKAY WOW THIS BOOK LITERALLY CHANGED MY LIFE THANK U this became a journal entry so im gonna stop gushing now haha but yes @ everyone pls read this!!!!!!! the visuals are really good too. u can find it in the inhabit website :)) it might change ur life in so many ways too!!!

An interesting manifesto, a bit idealistic in nature but when thinking of ways to revolution it’s impossible to not be in one way or another. These are loose, umbrella principles that anybody can come together and specify more fine points for their autonomy zones. I do think they’re underestimating the power of modern day capital but all the more power to them if they get anywhere with this.

I might dislike this less if it wasn’t written as instructions.

I’ll be curious to see how folks that aren’t already on this page react to it.
