Woah, I loved this issue so much! It was spectacular and breath-taking to see Seiji and Nicholas fence! They have so much more in common than I and also they would have thought. I mean, they share the same dream, they both feel kind of lonely and/or separated and they both are pretty stubborn XD
Let’s be honest here, the result of their bout didn’t surprise anyone but that one point, that ... Am I overrating it when calling it a miracle? Maybe. Maybe it was earned and deserved since Nicholas trains really hard. Seiji simply is a million classes ahead of all of them but still... That growing friendship between Seiji and Nicholas (which, in all honesty, at the beginning wasn’t of interest for me) turns out to drive both a them to a better. I think it were Seiji’s expectations from Nicholas which caused him to hit that one time. Of course, those expectations drove him nuts but it also made him try harder and harder until it was good enough for a second. And then Nicholas knew he could do it. Even though he might not make the team and might have to leave Kings Row, he’s still grateful for what Seiji helped him to accomplish and for the possible improvements Seiji still sees in him and this is why we got the chance to witness Nicholas repaying him. As diligent readers we’re aware of Seiji’s secluded position at Kings Row and in general, about his daily life and that he actually only lives to fence on highest standard. He’s a loner and Nicholas simply changes this, not even needing permission or approvement. This really was on of the most precious scenes in Fence yet! And it’s not only the two of them: Nicholas also includes Bobby and that’s seriously the sweetest thing he could do. There’s no denying it, Nicholas is such a good friend to anyone he befriends! (This sentence sounds stupid...) I might become a fan of this trio~
Oh, and also let’s take a short moment to breathe in the fact that everyone’s family came to cheer for them, mothers, fathers, grandparents, siblings and Dante who of course was there for Bobby ^^ Pls, look at how Bobby’s abuelita eyes Dante!
I also loved all the other families! Tanner has a bunch of siblings and now I think I might understand a little bit why he’s so... out-going (?). I mean, it’s surely not easy XD Plus, he made them cheer for Kally. Okay, you can’t be more obvious, boy. //both thumbs up// I actually squealed a bit when I learnt, Kally has two moms. These three looked so lovely together and personality-wise Kally seems to swing after them. Harvard’s mom and dad were as great-hearted as their son is and Eugene’s siblings were the sweetest, everyone going “Gene! Gene! Then, there was Aiden’s..... umm... ......there was Alice.
At first this one panel made me laugh out so loud. Of course, he can’t even remember the name of his dad’s new girl. But thinking about it, I assume his dad changes his lovers almost as quickly as Aiden does. Maybe this is why Aiden behaves like this and doesn’t value love too much, maybe doesn’t even believe in real love. This thought made me feel sad for him and I seriously hope, Harvard will teach him there is true love.
Finally, there’s that bit we see about Nicholas family. Like Seiji, he’s alone. No one came to root for him and he’s not even surprised. Neither am I. Besides, we didn’t see his mom yet, so who knows what’s wrong with her, what’s her attitude towards her son? To be honest, I find it strange that there are so many thoughts about his father and Jesse on his mind but nothing about his mom. Hm. Am I the only one who thinks so? ... Back to Nicholas and him being alone. His thoughts depict how actually hurt he feels to be neglected and what hatred and jealousy he feels towards Jesse. Jesse, his half brother who seems to get everything Nicholas wishes for. Their dad (and his love and attention), the glory and fame as being the top ranked fencer (trained by their father), the praise and Seiji?! (〇o〇;) ギ
”I’m not going to let him take Seiji, too.
Oooooookay.... (¬‿)
