I will level (pun fully intended) myself with you; this was by far the most badass and engaging LitRPG I’ve ever read.

Some of you may already know that I’m a huge fan of manga/manhwa; I’ve been reading it since I was a kid, and I will always continue to do so. I don’t usually post a full-review of a manga/manhwa series I’ve read here, but Solo Leveling demands, at least, a little write-up because my god, everyone needs to bless their eyes and mind with the entertaining experience of reading this. It takes a lot for a manga/manhwa series to blow my mind now, and Solo Leveling accomplished this feat non-stop.

Solo Leveling is a manhwa adaptation—illustrated by Gi So-Ryeong (기소) and Jang Sung-Rak (장성)—of a completed series of light novels with the same title that’s written by Chu-Gong. The official blurb from the light novel did a great job of explaining the premise without spoiling anything, so I’ll copy it here:

10 years ago, after “the Gate that connected the real world with the monster world opened, some of the ordinary, everyday people received the power to hunt monsters within the Gate. They are known as "Hunters". However, not all Hunters are powerful. My name is Sung Jin-Woo, an E-rank Hunter. I'm someone who has to risk his life in the lowliest of dungeons, the "World's Weakest". Having no skills whatsoever to display, I barely earned the required money by fighting in low-leveled dungeons at least until I found a hidden dungeon with the hardest difficulty within the D-rank dungeons! In the end, as I was accepting death, I suddenly received a strange power, a quest log that only I could see, a secret to leveling up that only I know about! If I trained in accordance with my quests and hunted monsters, my level would rise. Changing from the weakest Hunter to the strongest S-rank Hunter!

It’s a simple premise, nothing revolutionary, but it’s executed magnificently; Sung Jin-Woo’s journey in his endless pursuit of a stronger power was simply a blast to read. And I’m not saying that the manhwa is without its flaws. The author seemed to have forgotten—for almost 50 chapters—that the reason Sung Jin-Woo became a hunter in the first place was to earn money to pay for the medical expense of his sick mother. Plus, Sung Jin-Woo is just extremely overpowered. But you know what? I don’t care. This manhwa is a personification of badass main character and action scenes, and everything worked well for the story and medium; I’m willing to overlook the minor flaws in favor of the powerfully engrossing and immensely addictive reading experience. Also, I loved the nod to other popular franchises: One Punch Man training method, Alex Armstrong from Full Metal Alchemist cameo, and the design of Artorias the Abyss from Dark Souls. I could be wrong about these, of course, but they seemed too similar to be considered a coincidence, especially the later story arc resemblance to the Chimera Ant arc from Hunter x Hunter. Case in point:

Picture: Igris from Solo Leveling.

Picture: Artorias the Abyss from Dark Souls video game.

Gi So-Ryeong (기소) and Jang Sung-Rak (장성) are virtuoso of illustrations; I truly believe that the reason this manhwa reaches the popularity and acclaim it has now is due to their irreplaceable contributions as an artist. The level of explosive actions and vivid artworks displayed in this manhwa, for the lack of a better term, is godlike. A picture is worth a thousand words, and rather than hearing me ramble on about how beautiful and well-drawn the illustrations are, I’ll provide proofs instead:

Yes, every single panel of this manhwa is drawn with at least the superb caliber shown above.

Solo Leveling is an outstandingly phenomenal manhwa that deserves all the praises it gets and more. Forgive me for saying this, but Season 1 of this series alone has made every other LitRPG I’ve ever experienced pale in comparison. Seriously, I honestly never thought I would ever read a LitRPG as addictive, mind-blowing, and page-turning as this, but here we are. I highly recommend this to pretty much everyone. Only Season 1 has been completed at the moment, but trust me when I say that this manhwa is going to take over the world. Join in the hype now. I can’t wait for Season 2 to begin and see the—hopefully—terrifying challenges the Sung Jin-Woo encounter.

I was looking for a manga to read when I came upon Solo Leveling. I wanted something short (it's 87 chapters so far), preferably finished. This one had high ratings and I rarely read manhwa so I decided to give it a try. I can't resist unfinished manga, I guess. Well, I started it yesterday and today I caught up with it. I couldn't stop reading. I wanted to study or maybe read a novel, I kept thinking I'll stop reading after the next chapter... How on earth did people wait while reading this! It's SO addicting. One of the most addicting manga/comics I've read and it's so fun that I was ready to overlook some flaws that bugged me.

If you want to start this manhwa -and if you're a manga fan you totally should- make sure to have time because you can't help but wonder what happens next. And you’ll find yourself unable to stop.

Short, 10 years ago gates started opening out of nowhere releasing monsters if not dealt with. That's the mission of hunters who are basically superheroes and possess different rankings. The main character, who is one of the weakest, finds himself as a player in a game determined to make him stronger.

Good thing that Sung Jin Woo isn't your usual MC, he doesn't act stupid nor rash. You might think that this story is done too many times with the overpowered MC but it's actually fantastic. I honestly don't mind this trope if done well, and Solo Leveling was splendid in that regard.

The art is absolutely gorgeous, the drawing styles, the colors, everything is perfect. I'm so used to black and white so this was quite refreshing.

I want to keep this review short so I'll suffice to say that I wish some characters were more developed and saw more of them.

This manhwa has a few flaws that I can't help but mention:
- Poor world-building, this serves the plot in a way but on the other hand, we don't know much about how people dealt with this catastrophe (the gates) for example, how they started guilds, etc.
- NO backstory. We don't know anything about his childhood, his family, his father who disappeared and how he dealt with that, he almost never think of him for example. We hear about his sick mother from the start but we don't know anything nor see her until a very late arc. (This isn't a spoiler because knowing it won't affect the story at all, it's almost like the author forgot.)
- In later arcs it's too obvious it's copying another manga. Not necessarily copying, maybe getting too inspired? I still want to know how it'll turn out, though, like now but I ran out of released chapters.
Update concerning this point: it actually did not copy the manga I had in mind. It was definitely inspired by it for the start of events is too similar, however, it took a completely different turn.

These weaknesses aside, I still highly recommend it. If it got turned into an anime (or whatever they call South Korean anime) it would be epic. Would it be better if you wait till it's finished? Well, I kinda wish I did because I want more chapters but it doesn't look like it's going to end any time soon. So better start it now. I'll wait a few months, till we have 10 chapters at least to go back to it. I can't read a chapter per week? the battles are too intense to be cut off! (not sure if it's monthly/weekly... now thinking about it, I should've done my research and made sure the author doesn't go on hiatus *sighs*). The number of pages in each chapter is satisfying, however.

I just found out that it's also a series of light novels, light novels never worked for me so I'll stick to the manhwa.

realistically speaking, this is taking manga down a few levels, mediocre writing, predictable yet exciting plot, mediocre art with little details and little effort, but it is amusing and this is the word in my mind the entire 2 and half hours i was reading this, Amusement.
Based on what i said this takes 3 stars, but i am pumping it up 1 more star for the fact that i read it all in one sitting, and i am really tempted to read more, but i want to use the energy i got from here to advance in other reading endeavors.
At the first commandment i was like

these people have never played an RPG game in their lives, i solved 3 out of the 3 riddles and i wasn't even present, the one i missed was the instrument one, and with little knowledge about that fantasy world, you don't know if these statues can strum their instruments and cut you in 6 slices with the music waves or something.
a fun evil Idea that i got at the end, since everyone, or mostly everyone abandoned the hero, when he succeeds the challenge, he would then become a Boss himself, and just take it out on humans, i got the thought mainly because of how angry he was that he got abandoned near death, his desire to live.
Anyway This is Fun People read it, its one of the Few works, that make me wish everyone knew English so they can read it and have fun, even if it will resonate with Gamers more than everyone else.

Solo Leveling fell onto my lap unexpectedly (thanks to Petrik) and before I knew it, I was utterly addicted to this incredibly entertaining and ridiculously absorbing manhwa that boasts of some the most insanely epic and amazing comic artwork I've seen.

Well, truth be told, I've only read one manga before this, and it was the ingeniously brilliant Death Note. The artwork for Death Note was already superb in my opinion, but the drawings in Solo Leveling was frankly on a totally different level (pun entirely intended). And I also have it on the best authority available to me that very few titles out there have the same quality of artwork as this one (yes, it's Petrik again).

The story in Solo Leveling could be said to be quite unoriginal and tropey, but regardless I was hooked and went out of control binge-reading it. It took over all my reading attention for about a day and half, and even now I couldn't stop thinking about it. Set in a world where Gates that connect to Dungeons of monsters started appearing, certain powers have awakened in some of the human race to enable them to fight these monsters. The humans who fight monsters are called hunters, who are grouped into raids and divided into roles like tanks, damage dealers, mages and healers.

Our main protagonist, Sung Jin-Woo, was an E-rank hunter, the lowest rated hunter who was so weak that he's even known as the "World's Weakest". However, given his situation at home he needed to make the money that hunters could earn by risking his live fighting monsters in low-levelled dungeons. After a dangerous and catastrophic raid at an unusually challenging D-ranked dungeon, Jin-Woo gained an ability that appears to be uniquely available only to him. This is where the title of the story came from. All hunters are awakened at a predetermined rank (which denotes the magical power innate to the person), and nothing can change that ranking. Jin-Woo now, however, has the ability to level up from experience and he sets out on a personal quest to become as powerful as he could possibly be, battling more and more powerful creatures and monsters.

Jin-Woo becomes a cliched, overpowered main character, but O-M-G it worked so darn well. Seriously, the fight scenes in this manhwa progressively becomes more epic as Jin-Woo's badass-o-meter (and hotness) just kept getting higher and higher. The artwork was the primary reason why it was so well-executed. The badassery was off the charts and I lost count of how many times I've flailed from the sheer epicness of the story told through the mind-blowing visuals. Scenes were rendered in vivid brilliance, as the dynamism from the drawings and flow of the panels gave the action a palpable sense of underlying motion. I could not say it enough, the artwork was absolutely amazing!

The story has its flaws but at the end of the day, I had way too much fun to nitpick over the details. Highly recommended for any fantasy or LitRPG reader, especially if you have an appreciation for incredible artwork.

Highly entertaining and captivating from beginning to end, Solo Levelling is almost unputdownable and will have you speaking that oft broken promise, "Just one more chapter", repeatedly.

The story takes place in a world where gates randomly open up that are filled with all kinds of monsters, beasts and demons. When the gates first started appearing, some humans began displaying various powers and became hunters, classified according to their varying strengths. These hunters use their powers to clear the gates by defeating the evils within, and thus prevent the monsters from entering the world.

Our main character, Sung Jin-Woo, is such a hunter. Unfortunately for him, he is known as The Weakest hunter, and is classified as E-class - the lowest possible rank. While he is quite a bit stronger than a regular human, he is no match for other hunters or any of the monsters dwelling within the gates. When disaster strikes during the clearing of one such gate, Sung Jin-Woo gains a power that allows him to become a stronger hunter, setting his first steps upon the path to becoming a major badass and in the process changing his life in every possible way.

Solo Levelling is as addictive as they come. There are fist-pumps and goosebumps and HOLY CRAP moments galore, and while the story is pretty basic, it's the artwork that truly elevates this tale to something special; sinking it's hooks into you and never letting go from one B A D A S S moment to the next. Every scene, every monster, every battle is a delight. All illustrated in detail and beautifully so. Whether it is the sheer chaos of a high speed fight or the horror of a hideous monster, every image is wonderfully immersive; conveying entire scenes perfectly in a glance and never ceasing to deliver a feast for the eyeballs. This is as binge-able as it gets. Go on. You know you want to.

THIS WAS LITTTTTTTT!

I’ve been getting into more manhwa and this did not disappoint. There is so much to be said about this first installment in Solo Leveling but to be honest I don’t want to spoil anything. It follows a main character, Jinwoo, who is one of the lowest ranking hunters in his world. Hunters are responsible for fighting beings and finally the boss’s of these “gates to prevent the evil from seeping into their world. Jinwoo unfortunately tagged along on a hunting assignment that goes completely left. While there lots of things happen that then inform how he develops as a character. This isn’t for the faint of heart or those who don’t like a lot of violence. It’s gory and graphic. There are some twists and turns that I did not expect and now I’m looking forward to seeing how this will all play out in the next few volumes. The artwork is AMAZING. It’s beautiful with great action scenes and deep, rich colors. Honestly, I can see why people love this one so much.

A great start to a promising series and although it was lacking in some aspects, it’s likely later volumes will pick up the slack.

The protagonist’s character was likeable despite his clear ineptitude as a hunter. There was clearly a lot of room for growth but I imagine that’ll come in future chapters. As for the other characters, they were mostly throwaway generic characters without distinguishable personalities who, for the most part, didn’t matter at all.

The plot was thankfully mostly not predictable and the pacing heightened the tension and fear well. The art and fantastic colours certainly helped to elevate the plot too.

So, all in all, an interesting start to the series and I’m looking forward to seeing if it solidifies itself as a great series in ...

Someone remind me why didn't I read this sooner?! It's been on my list for more than a year. If you're still not sure whether you should pick this up or not, I'm telling you now: DO IT.

What to expect:
 Fantasy
 Manhwa
 LitRPG
 OP Main Character
 Gorgeous Artwork
 Anime Adaptation ~ SOON

Summary
10 years ago Gates that connected the real world with the monster world started opening out of nowhere and monsters were released in the world.
Some people experienced this "Awakening" and were given the title of "Hunter". These Hunters possess supernatural abilities and are more powerful than an average human Superhero vibes

Main Character
Jin-Woo, our main character, is considered one of the weakest Hunters. He's a smart boy who cares too much about people and I liked him from the beginning! I can't wait to see him turning into the badass character I know he'll become

Artwork
I fell in love with the art - it is G O R G E O U S! The color combination, the battle scenes ... I have no complains, it's just PERFECT
It's also a little dark - expect a lot of death and bloody scenes.

Conclusion
I totally recommend it if you are a manga/manhwa reader! I'm getting the next volumes asap.
I've read the german edition so I'll continue it in german, but for those of you who don't know - I didn't - it is available in english!
P.s. I would've like if there were a little more worldbuilding.

My first ever Manhwa ! This was recommended to me by one of my classmates who also introduced me to a site I can read mangas/manhwa's on ( We havent got any stores with those here😭) , so to show my gratitude I figured I would try reading some of this . *laughs* 'some' turned into 'all' realllll quick .

The story line started alright . Nothing I had seen before exactly , off to a good start . Then this went from that to this and I was no longer indifferent . It got so entertaining with the awakening and system introduced and I got ADDICTED . Some ideas seem to have been forgotten and the suddenly picked up again but its was ok , plenty of plot twists .There were flaws to this with the world building and back story as well but i could move past it .While it was predictable that our Mc would go on to be among the strongest hunters in the world ( and him always winning wasnt very stimulating) , the way it was done was very original . He liked to put himself in situations where he could watch experienced hunters and learn form them without placing himself in any unnecessary danger or drama unless required . The more he levelled up the more things got so LIT .Every time someone would go "Whats happening ?" I would just have this urge to yell: OUR BOY JUST HAPPENED !! He became such a badass and I loved to see it . But he still remained human in the sense that he had emotions such as embarrassment , humility and yes - when he cried , my hearttt .

The artwork here is on another level fr . I loved the colour schemes used , the details in the drawings and the vivid portraits that really hint at how amazingly animated the manhwa adaptation is going to be ( CANT WAIT!) . I found myself admiring them so often and pausing to save moments that are truly worthy of display ( on my wall hehe) .attached at the bottom are a few for u to judge yourselves , or at least what I thought would be a few....

Side characters:The dynamic between him and Yoo was so entertaining , such a brotherly affection where one is so utterly taken by the other and he acts so cool abt it Just like jin woo , am I compatible with people who have clumsy personalities or somthing ? LMAOOO YES .Hunter cha and Baek have such potential . Cha is so pretty and cute and not prideful at all , Hope Im smelling some romance in the air when it comes to her ;) As for Baek he's a smart one and for some reason I find myself liking him

Super STOKED for the next volume

NB: I had such a hard time with these names and my memory 😂 but would probably recommend even with all its flaws

I almost sent this back to the library unread when I finally noticed that it was a manhwa adaptation of a Korean novel I hadn't read. Adaptations and manhwa do not have a great success rate for me individually, much less combined. But I was running low on books the day before my weekly library run, so like an ugly shirt on laundry day, I gave it a chance, guessing by the number of one- and two-panel pages I saw on a quick flip through that it would at least be a quick read.

But I was surprised to find myself liking the weak but clever underdog protagonist and the escape room scenario around which this first volume revolved.

I'm a little leery of the video game aspects that permeate everything -- how the story and world seems built like a video game and the main character actually sees a GUI pop-ups featuring his own hit points -- but I'm willing to give the second volume a try.

Engrossing, fun, addictive!

The quality of the drawings is out-of-this-world! The story and the main characters gained depth and complexity with each chapter and I got literal goosebumps from the sheer epicness of some of the panels.

Fantastic foray into LitRPG and into manhwas!

This took me by surprise. I wasn't expecting it was going to be so gruesome and it being full colour didn't help matters. But the premise is interesting and I'm curious about what would happen next.

I read the paperback edition but you can give this a try for free (with some rectrictions) in Tapas app.

a bit of Horror

at first it gave me a little Dungeons & Dragons vibes; the world building (the "Dungeons", the monsters & magic), the concept
but it takes its own turn after a few minutes. (the horrors!) though still the D&D is on the back of my mind & I love it.

just like the anime, this first part was gory & bloody (not much, but not little either), but it was intriguing (the mystery, the questions! OMG!) that made me continue the series & now the Manhwa :D
& I loved the main character & his further development
great arts

& I know where it's going, so I save 4s (& maybe 5) for later volumes
interesting start, made me curious, so, rounding up

Pre-read: fangirling!

I just binge-finished the series & (naturally ^_) came looking for more in my comfort place (reading) & while I figured it's a Manhwa (so it'll be my first Manhwa (^∇) ) I figured season 1 was only to chapter 45 (apparently) & there's like, 200 chapters!? Whoooooo! (& since that ending was intriguing, well, I'm here (◕ฺ ∀))

Jin-woooooo!

the concept is veryyyyyyyyy appealing, I loved it & the MC arc, his development was... omg!

“If you don't know how to control yourself, your courage becomes recklessness.

Join MC, Sung Jinwoo, who goes from Zero💩 to Hero💯!

Jinwoo is popularly known as the world's weakest (monster) hunter. His motive to continue as one, despite the critics he faces due to his weakness, is to provide for his sick momma and his lil sis, a highschooler.

He's accompanied by Lee Ju-Hee, a B-rank healer, into accomplishing a mission in a dungeon . He's later given a second chance at life.

His goal, afterwards, is to become stronger.

P.S. There's a teeny-tiny bit of romance happening between Jinwoo and Lee Ju-Hee.
The weakest hunter needs the most healing, y'know? ;)
Lee Ju-Hee asks Jinwoo to go out to eat with her, and he accepts the request.
