When one door closes second chances open another

Ethan was lost after a major accident abruptly shifted him from a military life to a civilian one, from working with dogs to odd jobs In that time, he’d spent months healing from his physical injuries. When he connects with Badger and the rest of his Titanium Corp. group of former SEALs, Badger offers Ethan an opportunity he can’t refuse. A chance to do the work he used to do with a twist.

Cinnamon works from home as a project manager plus is heavily involved in global dog rescues—dogs of all kinds. When Ethan walks into the next door’s vet’s office with an injured shepherd in his arms, she sees another lost soul—just like the canine ones she helps.

Ethan knows he’s about to take a dangerous step, but he’s on the job, and no one—on the job or not—hurts animals while he’s around. This poor shepherd has taken enough abuse, and Ethan fears she is only the tip of a nightmare he’s determined to uncover. But he knows she’s going to lead him in the right direction.

He has his sights set on saving one dog in particular, Sentry: K9 File 01.

Romantic Suspense with dogs

Not my most favorite genre... Too many gaps in the "suspense" story part.... Romance = " sweet inst-luv," overall a sort of good bedtime mindless read.

I’ve read books by this author before but this was just disappointing.

The whole thing felt empty, like the first draft of it was accidentally published instead of the final edit.

And don’t even get me started on the Plot Chasms.

This was empty un-relatable sympathy fiction instead of an empathetic study on the relationship between man and animal.

It could have been so much more.

I was drawn by the wounded veteran and dog storyline. It had some awkward dialogue, including a weird monologue from one of the bad guys. There were also some credibility issues, for instance why kidnap someone and leave them in an unlocked room?
It was awfully convenient that Cinnamon just happened to know of a suspicious property in the area that just happened to be the base of the bad guys Ethan was looking for.
Ethan and Cinn have barely had a conversation yet fall for each other.
I did consider not finishing this but perservered.

I love it...I really really love this book. I love everything, the loveable characters, the wildness but awesome K9s that makes me want to have my on shepherd, the suspense that got my heart racing all the time, the sweetness between Ethan and Cinn, and the awesomeness of a K9s handler that so captivating. Although I'm missing the camaraderie that always occurs on Dale Mayer suspense military books, I found Ethan as a loner is quite refreshing, and kinda intensified the suspense, when you're alone and on a mission to bring down the bad guys, everything felt more intense.
So yes, this book definitely one of my favorite books from Dale Mayer.

If you love suspense romance and a dog lover, you'll love this book.

This was a fun read and about the right speed and plot to read while sick.

HOWEVER!!! It did feel formulaic AND I was distressed when two of the dogs suddenly disappeared and no one noticed! Ethan is a good guy and Cinn a nice person, so i understand focusing on the people when she was stolen from her bedroom. BUT!!! [Spoiler Alert] Her two dogs were in the room WITH her! They did not make a sound AND they never are mentioned again!

So these two dog people do not talk about the fact that either these two dogs are dead in the bedroom, that they are the heaviest sleeping dogs in history, or that they were given away to someone without a tearful goodbye!

This jarring fact that seems so out of character for both protagonists is the reason for the low rating.

Too Bad

I really was looking forward to this story. It was too much about the dogs and that would have not been bad if the romance had progressed evenly along the way. It was 94% into the story before there was any passion...that was so brief as well. I will still buy the next story in the hopes it is better. Unfortunately, Ethan and Cinn's story did nothing for me. The plot was good, but never flowed smoothly incorporating all the surrounding some and that was too bad.

So I have read this author before and didn't like that work very much but this was a new K9 Files series so I had to give it a try. I'm really glad I did.

While the world building and character development were not as much or complex as I might like, this was a very enjoyable read. It is a relatively short read so it could have been longer and have added more details. For example, even the "scene" changes were a little rough and could have had more detail. The chapters alternate between Ethan and Cinn's point of view.

It wasn't clear to me that Ethan had been a SEAL until I read the blurb so either I missed it or it wasn't clear in the beginning. I looked to see if any of these are at the library and a bunch of SEAL books are with names of characters briefly mentioned in the first chapter. So it looks as if this is a loosely related spinoff series.

I did like the characters very much. The romance was slow burn and the sexy times were few. Of course, they were busy with the suspense part and that mystery. The amazing thing was how well the dogs and their training were included. They were really part of it, key to the action and that was wonderful.

I definitely want to go on with this series! It looks like there are 7 books which all came out in April of this year.

I was kindly provided this book as an ARC; in exchange for my honest review. This is book 1 in The K9 Files series. This book centers around Ethan and Cinnamon. (yep Cinnamon is a human not the K9...)

Ethan out of the military and lost after a major accident abruptly ended his career and took the life of his working dog. Seemingly drifting, Ethan connects with Badger (see the SEALs Of Steel series) and Badger offers Ethan a chance to work with service dogs again Tracking down several Military Working Dogs that have gone missing.

Cinnamon works as a project manager and is involved in global dog rescues. (I suppose this “matches them.

Ethan finds a shepherd that’s injured and meets up with Cinnamon at the neighborhood vets office. And the story moves on from there.

I’m going to preface this; I felt there was just not enough backstory and information in order for me to get firmly involved and committed to this story. The whole thing felt rushed and almost like an outline was followed and little boxes were checked off in what could have been a great beginning to a new series. Working dogs, in my opinion are the greatest heroes in the world. They serve and protect those they love, for cuddles and belly tickles (and maybe a few tennis balls..)

I was very excited about this series and just didn’t feel it hit the mark. I have read everything Ms Dale has published, and I know her work usually flows much more smoothly. Also, I wouldn’t really classify this as a romance, but as more of a mystery/suspense story. I still think the book is worth your time and money.

No one does damaged and broken military heroes you can’t help but love as they find redemption and love quite like Dale Mayer. When I saw this new K9 Files series featuring not only hot military heroes but also damaged K9 heroes who had served in the military and are in need of a second chance, I couldn’t resist digging into the series.

Ethan Nebberly worked with the K9 unit while he served and he's still trying to find his footing in civilian life, so he's the perfect choice when Titanium Security takes on a special request to locate several military War Dogs who have fallen through the cracks. His quest to find K9:01, Sentry, leads him to a petite, feisty dog rehabber who catches his eye, but her life becomes endangered when Ethan stumbles across an illegal operation in his search for Sentry.

Hang on tight, because this is a wild ride full of non-stop action and suspense as Cinn and Ethan try to rescue the dogs and avoid the bad guys. You'll love this wounded warrior and this strong, determined heroine, and you’ll fall for all of the dogs with their unique personalities and the difficulties they’ve endured. This is a quick, easy read full of suspense and heart that you don’t want to miss.

Suspense with a tiny touch of romance

Ethan is on a mission to find a lost war dog. Cinn bumps into him at the vet. There is an instant attraction, which is why these two loners continue seeing each other. However, he doesn't talk very much, and there isn't any real romance in the story until 90%. Most of the story is how Ethan rescues a shepherd, and then follows her trail to rescue three more shepherds, and how he works with them to protect Cinn from the drug gang.

Stand alone HEA? At least for now, I think. This seems to be the beginning and end of Ethan's and Cinn's story, but there are characters in here that confuse me, as if I've missed out on previous books. I've read books that aren't the first in a series or are spin-offs of other series, and I haven't been confused, so it's something with the way this author wrote them into the story.

Contains sex scene, swear words, and violence (shooting, kidnapping, drug raid, breaking and entering, off page animal abuse).

This was an odd read. I liked the premise and the characters... but it all felt a little un-built. It was as if the reader was given a precis ( in long form - oxymoron... yeah, I realise that... ) and was then told to fill it all out. I am a little flummoxed by the non-ness of it all. BUT, as with another series of DM's I will persist cos there is obviously something drawing me to these tales.

Also... what happened to her dogs?

And... why were the 'baddies' so very chatty? And that was a plot point that was never explained or resolved.

Oh... and why did one of the baddies say that he could get out of it by saying that it was his girlfriend's house and they had had a row? That makes literally no sense whatsoever. At all.

🔥😻💖

This was my first Dale Mayer book. I did choose this mainly because it has canines animals in it.

Don't regret it. It was all about healing each other. Be it animal or human.

It was not just about romance and i loved that. But one thing that kept me scratching my head was it felt like there was a story or backstory missing. Or I had missed something. Maybe that would be fulfilled with more books in the series.

A life changing incident has altered the course of Ethan's life. The training he acquired in the military, working with the K-9 unit makes him the ideal person to head up a special project. Cinnamon works with a dog rescue organization. When their paths cross their similarities help them bond. There are nefarious elements in the book, that bring danger and action to the story. I

Disappointed

The story of saving and rehabilitation with K9’s got me from the go. However I found the story lacking any real drama or excitement. I won’t read anymore of this series, and I love Dale Mayer’s other stories and characters very much. I feel this series was just a quick throw together that lacked substance.

This book gives an insight into war dogs, but not in an interesting way. There's a suspense element, but that's also not very exciting because of the way it's told. The dialogue is stilted and there's quite a bit of info dumping. If this is supposed to be a romance, it fails.

Unimpressed. DNF. The author constantly told us the hero is a loner, his friends tell us he's a loner, the heroine tells us he is a loner. So I left him alone.

Absolutely loved this book. A book about not only our military heroes with two legs but our heroes with four. Not much is ever said about the K9s that have trained so hard to work for our country in protecting our men and women who are fighting for our beliefs in freedom. These are group of people that form a strong bond with each other. I can’t imagine how the dogs cope if the loose their handlers and are taken care of someone else. I can’t imagine the lose a handler feels when their partner is not longer there at their side. I loved the characters in this story. Ethan with his scares not only on the outside but on the inside as well. Cinnamon had a relationship end just because they were going in different directions and when he left it was forever. She concentrates all her time on the animals, but she can also see Ethan as the man he truly is. This book had me glued to it from start to finish.

In this book Ethan is on a mission to locate twelve missing War Dogs. They were to be in retirement but some how in the chaos of everyday life and the tragedies that can happen in it they have been lost. Ethan is going to start with K9:1. Ethan is an ex Navy SEAL. He was in Afghanistan with his dog partner when they were hit by a bomb. His dog didn’t make it and he was terribly injured. While trying to recover and get use the idea of no longer having one of his one leg his parents are killed in an accident. It took him a while to get out of the darkness that he descended on him for a while. Through working with other ex navy SEAL and other operatives he was coming back to himself. The higher up in the military learned that he was once a trainer in the K9 group and enlisted his help in finding these dogs and making sure that they have a life fitting for all that they had done for their country.
Ethan headed to the town in another state that had a group of men that did simliar work as that of his friend Badger. He was on his way to see Gunner when he noticed a wounded shepherd in the field off the road. It took him a while to get close enough to help her when he heard a man approached him from behind. Speaking in soft voices they were able to get the dog and get her to a clinic. It just so happened the man that had come to help was the very man from the group he was to be working with.
At the Vets whose name in Louise and a partner to one of them men he met Cinnamon or Cinn as she likes to be called. Cinn worked with rescuing dogs and animals in war torn nations or nations that have had disasters. She makes way from the to be shipped to other countries where they can be put in a foster home until they can find forever homes for them.
Cinn and Ethan develop a strange but good relationship together but they are about to face some very difficult times. A group of drug dealers don’t like what Ethan is doing and they want what they think is their back. The question is will Cinn be able to survive what the future holds? What about Ethan his is going to have his hands full will he be about to get everyone the care that they need?

I received a complimentary copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This is the first book in a new series by Dale Mayer. Based on this impressive novel, this series will be highly entertaining and very thrilling.

Ethan is a former SEAL who was seriously injured in an accident. Not only did he lose his leg, but he also lost his own K9 dog in that accident. When Ethan comes to visit his friend, Badger, who is also a former SEAL, Ethan is looking for a way to move on with his life now that he is no longer in the military.

As it turns out that Badger receives a call from the Navy. He wants someone to search for twelve K9 dogs who have ended their careers in the Navy. Unfortunately, the Navy has track of them. Badger offers this job to Ethan who was a dog trainer and handler in the Navy. Ethan agrees.

We first meet Ethan as he is chasing after a severely injured dog who is loose on the street. The shepherd badly needs medical attention, but he is too afraid of people to let anyone get close enough. Ethan is able to talk the scared dog into going with him to the vet.

At the vet, Ethan meets Cinnamon “Cinn, who is also a dog lover. In her spare time, she is part of a “global rescue group. She helps find homes for rescue dogs around the world. She also has two of her own rescue dogs.

Ethan and Cinn are perfect for each other. They both love dogs and go out of their way to help and rescue them. In fact, they both prefer the company of dogs over human beings.

Ethan discovers that the dog he has just found comes from a place nearby when he finds three more dogs. The owners of them are drug dealers who have trained them to become killers by using pain and abuse to train them. Ethan plans to re-train them to become service dogs by using kindness and respect. Ethan also discovers that one of these dogs is Sentry, the first name on that list of missing K9 dogs.

Meanwhile, the survivors of the raid come after Ethan and Cinn, because they want their dogs back. This is where the author skillfully creates non-stop danger and action. These “bad people are willing to injure or kill Ethan and Cinn to get them back. In spite of the fact that we know who the villains are, we are never sure where they or how will attack.

Ethan chooses to take these dogs with him to help fight off the villains. Yet, we are never sure whether Ethan’s training is working enough for the dogs to follow his orders during some tough situations. Also, the author creates even more tension when Ethan and Cinn are confronted by the drug dealers. Who will the dogs side with?

I found this book to be a very exciting page-turner. It is a fast moving book with lots of action and intrigue. It is also interesting to “observe Ethan work to re-train these dogs. And, it is fun to “watch Ethan and Cinn work together as they fight their attraction to each other.

I got what I wished for! When I finished reading The Final Reveal, the last book in Dale Mayer’s SEALs of STEEL series, I just wasn’t ready to let go of the group. To my delight, Badger and the Titanium Corp remain alive and well...and focused on helping other wounded SEALs find satisfying productive work in post-military life. Hiring other SEALs to help in building/renovating houses for the seven newlywed couples seemed a good first step in creating a cadre of talented wounded warriors for the new company. Not knowing what type of work assignments Titanium Corp will be offered, their employees are skilled is multiple areas. Soon, Badger is approached by a commander who knows the group well and needs an assist in tracking down a dozen retired naval dogs whose whereabouts are currently unknown. As trained K9 Corp soldiers in their own right, these dogs deserve to live safe and productive lives, just like the members of Titanium Corp, and had fallen between the cracks.

In this, the first of the K9 series, Ethan Nebberly, an electrician by trade helping in the construction of Geir’s house, and who also has eight years of service as a K9 trainer in Afghanistan, is a perfect fit for the first assignment. A bit of a loner missing his K9 partner, Ethan is looking for his niche in a non-military future. The dog he is tasked to find was called Sentry. His handler was medically discharged a quadriplegic from contact with an IED, and Sentry was sent home with him to Houston TX. Sadly, Sentry’s owner was killed in a crash soon after returning home. The family did not know how to handle Sentry and, thinking he had behavioral problems, gave him to a dog trainer, who gave him to someone else, who passed him on to yet someone else. Hoping the dog was still in Texas, and able to count on help from Levi and Legendary Security (check out the Heroes for Hire series for info on Legendary Security, Levi, Stone, Gunner, and the others), Ethan was on his way. On his way to check in at Levi’s, Ethan saw a small shepherd dog, weak and bleeding, near the road. Also trying to catch the dog was Stone, who had been so-far unsuccessful. Ethan’s skill served them well, and they headed to Anna’s and Flynn’s place to get help for the dog.

Veterinarian Cinn Michelson watched the broken dog and the broken man who brought her in. If you are a regular reader of Dale Mayer’s work, you can certainly guess that there is excitement and danger...and trust and love...ahead. You have to read to find out.

Ethan is the first book in a new K9 series. While Ms. Mayer’s affectionate readers will find many common themes with other books of hers, they will be pleasantly surprised by how she has been once again able to create fresh and original stories.
Ethan has worked with the members of the Titanium Corporation, aka the protagonists of the SEALs of Steel novels, and is also friendly with a few of the members of Legendary Security, Levi’s team.
His story, however, is told with a brand new angle. Even if Ethan is a wounded veteran himself, the atmosphere of the book is not as dramatic and highly emotional as in the SEALs of Steel books. This time, the focus is on the war dogs story, while humans play a sort of secondary character role.
Seven canine characters dominate the scene, each one of them with a different personality and a different background.
They surround the two human protagonists providing them moral and active support when they embark, almost involuntarily, in an adventurous and dangerous quest to dismantle a drug cartel.
Ethan is an intriguing character. An introvert individual, injured and lost, he is extremely skilled and competent. He draws motivation and finds a clear path for his future thanks to his interactions with the dogs.
His counterpart, Cinnamon, has a peculiar personality. A professional project manager working from home, she volunteers at rescuing dogs from war raged countries. While she shares the love of animals with Ethan, she is emotional, mercurial and outspoken.
Their encounter gives both of them the chance to rethink their life choices and move towards a shared goal, with all the difficulties and struggles that can be expected given their different personalities.
Ethan is, of course, an action-packed book. The story flows steadily, keeping the reader pleasantly glued to the page. There isn’t, however, the frantic rhythm often found in novels of the same genre. The author, instead, takes the time to explore the interactions between the humans and the animals, creating a myriad of enticing, entertaining and sometimes moving interludes.
Finally, Ethan is a great, fresh start for this new series. Animals lovers will appreciate the dedication and the passion that the author pours into describing the dogs adventures, and every reader will be captivated and moved by this sweet and charming tale.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book. Opinions and comments are solely my own

I found this book through Freebooksy a few days ago. I was actually surprised by it. It is a very clean romance (right up to the end and even that isn’t super racy). It’s more of a suspense story than anything else.

Ethan is a disabled war veteran trying to find his place in the world. He is handed a request to find a missing retired war dog named Sentry. Sentry was adopted out after his retirement from the military but the military department charged with keeping an eye on retired war dogs has run out of funding and Sentry fell through the cracks. No one knows where he is. As these dogs deserve the best homes possible after their retirement, particularly with their training, Ethan decides to take on the assignment. He runs into Cinnamon, an animal rescue volunteer, when he brings in an injured shepherd to a local veterinary clinic. In looking for who injured the shepherd, Ethan stumbles across a suspicious compound with extremely well trained dogs working it with the guards. Soon local retired veterans, the police, and Cinnamon are all involved with the compound.

Like I said the romance was very clean and interesting to watch develop between Cinnamon and the reclusive Ethan. I loved reading about the highly trained dogs. I am always interested in dog training and was hoping for more on how they are trained. Unfortunately, this book focused on what the dogs can do at the end of their training, not the actual training itself. Oh well. The dogs are highly involved in the book which is nice. I thought the book could have been made a little longer and not felt as if it drug on. Actually, some of the book felt a little rushed. Some of the events could have been spaced out more with some relationship development, background character highlighting, or discussion and background information. I absolutely loved reading it but since I finished it I feel like it’s missing substance, you know the deep background and little events that help build the depth of the book and relationships between the big events that make it really easy to remember the book. That being said the book was extremely well developed, moved along well, kept reader interest, and was well edited. The main characters were also fleshed out quite well.

Wow! What an emotional rollercoaster ride. When Badger asks Ethan if he's like to be involved in a special project that Commander Cross sent them.Saying it involves finding War dogs an making sure the veteran dogs are in good homes an being taken care of.Ethan says he was part of the K9 part of the military. So yes he would like to be part of it.Ethan is given the file for K9-01Sentry. A large male Shepard mix. When he gets to town he is driving when he sees an injured Shepard mix but to small to be Sentry but this dog needs help and he's going to help the dog.As he follows a blood trail he sees that the dog is weak. She looks about to give up.She's under weight and looks like she's been shot.He gets down almost to her level an talks softly to her as he's approaching her he sees someone behind him an gives him a signal to stay back finally Ethan is slowly rubbing her head talking to her when the guy gives him a needle with tranquilizer in it.Then Ethan picks her up when he says I'll take you to the vet an back to your truck. When he gets to the vet he doesn't want to leave the dog but the vet says he can stay for a few minutes but can't be there for the surgery. As he's pacing back and forth Cinn,a volunteer for animal rescue tells him that the vet is the best she hands him a coffee an he's not much of a talker but asks about Sentry, she says she heard something about someone seeing a large Shepard mix but if anyone finds him before Ethan they will shoot him.The twist and turns to this story will keep you riveted until the very last page and leave you begging for more.I love the way this amazing author brings the characters to life before your eyes and you can feel their emotions and their pain.I love that chemistry between Ethan an Cinn is off the charts.I can hardly wait to see what's next by this multi talented author.
