Breaking the Bro Code

Rate this book
Hair is big, styles are bitchin, and Molly Mason must run for her life. Her plan is simple—race fast enough to get a cross country scholarship and get out of her craptastic little town, even if it means leaving her hot and cold boyfriend, Trevor, behind. Hayden Bishop has a different idea; convince Molly, his best friend’s girlfriend, that he can treat her better.
When Trevor dumps Molly, the game begins. Breaking the sacred bro code, Hayden tries to win her over. Soon he and Molly find themselves entangled in a relationship with more twists and turns than a Rubik’s Cube. Trevor won’t go down without a fight. Friends interfere. Lies are told. Molly’s scholarship is put in jeopardy, and Hayden’s chance to prove himself is slipping away.
Finding the truth may be harder than keeping Gremlins out of the kitchen at midnight but find it they must or be forever stuck in an endless loop of Jessie’s Girl.

A flood of memories hit me as my eyes raced across the paragraphs of this amazing book. I couldn’t seem to turn the pages fast enough.
I pictured popped collars, acid washed denim jackets covered in buttons, and my favorite penny loafers. I remember getting mixed tapes from boys who were to afraid to talk to me, so they let Motley Crue say it for them.
I love the bumpy teenage drama Swann laid out in the pages. I love the purity of young love, and crazy besties who go above and beyond. I even loved the intricacies of the antagonists.
I miss the 80’s. Thank you for the reminder.

Such a sweet story! I love the characters and of course the 80's nostalgia is glorious. Molly and Hayden are so perfect for each other and the antagonist is perfectly hatable. As usual, Swann tackles difficult issues well, writes complex characters, and creates stories that will stir up the audience's emotions so well.

If you like 80's romance, you should definitely check this story out.

Molly slid into Cindy’s blue Ford Escort and closed the door, smiling.
Cindy clapped her hands and bounced in the driver’s seat. “Well, what did they say? What did they offer? Are you going to UCLA or Arizona? Was U of I there? Do they want you, too? Come on, spill, spill!
Molly laughed. She waited, teasing a little longer. “I didn’t get an official offer yet from anyone. But UCLA and U of I will be at sectionals next week to see how I do. They said I have a promising future. Cindy’s squeal echoed through the car and Molly covered her ears.
She grabbed Molly’s hands and bounced even harder in the seat. “Omigod, omigod! This is so exciting!
Molly laughed. When Cindy broke into valley girl, it meant she was serious. “I know. But now I’m super nervous about next week. What if I screw up? What if Andrea beats me? She leaned back on the seat and groaned. “What if I crack under the pressure?
“I won’t let you. Cindy smiled at her. “Come on, let’s get your mind off it with food. I’m starving. Where should we go?
Molly’s stomach grumbled. “I don’t have much cash. Let’s go to Taco Bell. Then we can feed the games some quarters at the arcade next door and re-live our younger years.
“Sounds good. Cindy started her car then sped away from the cross-country course.
They passed the soccer fields and Molly looked out the window. She smiled at Hayden dribbling the ball down the field, glancing back when Cindy cleared her throat.
Cindy rolled her eyes. “So, are you and Trevor going out tonight? Or can we have a girl’s night instead?
Molly turned back to watch Hayden while they continued past the fields. Cindy turned a corner, and he disappeared from her view. She bit her bottom lip. “I don’t know. I think he’s mad at me again. I’ll have to call you and let you know.
“Girl, you know how I feel about Trevor. Yeah, he’s cute with that rocker hair. But good looks don’t matter when the personality is ugly. Cindy frowned. “He treats you bad.
Molly shook her head. “No, he doesn’t. I think he’s just insecure.
Cindy parked in the Taco Bell lot and cut the engine. “If he doesn’t trust you, he’s the one with the problem. Having four brothers makes me somewhat of an expert on boy’s behavior. I know how men should treat a lady. Trevor never got the memo. I’d never put up with that shit from a guy, no girl should.
“You don’t know him like I do. When it’s just us he’s super sweet. Molly smiled. “And he’s a great kisser.
“Hmm hmmm. But sex is no reason to stay with a man. Cindy got out of the car.
Molly followed, her face hot. “I’m not talking about sex.
“He still pressuring you? Cindy’s eyes narrowed. She walked through the door and they got in line. “You know he ain’t the one.
“How do you know? Maybe he is. Molly looked at the floor, avoiding Cindy’s steady stare. “He says he loves me.
“I love you too, but you don’t hear me pressuring you to do something that could damage your future.
Molly laughed. “I know. But he’s disappointed every time I say no. He’s my boyfriend and I want him to be happy. Was it such a big deal if she did it or not?
“I will whoop your ass if you do it for any reason other than because you want to, not to make some selfish asswipe happy. Cindy emphasized her comment by slapping Molly’s shoulder. “And I ain’t joking.
“Okay, okay. He knows I don’t want to.
They ordered their food and paid. Grabbing her tray Molly said, “Let’s change the subject. You’re supposed to be making me feel better.
“Sorry. I have a new topic. Cindy led her to a corner booth. She slid across the red pleather seat, dropping her voice to a whisper. “What’s going on with you and Hayden?
Molly cleared her throat. “Nothing. She took a bite of her taco.
Cindy giggled. “Look at those red cheeks. Yeah, something’s going on.
“Nothing is going on. Hayden is my friend. She shoved her taco back into her mouth.
“I hate to tell you this but there’s been talk. Cindy popped a nacho into her mouth.
Molly took a drink and glared at her friend. “What talk?
“Everybody knows Hayden likes you.
“He does not like me. He’s Trevor’s best friend. She frowned remembering their exchange after the race.
“Girl your blind. Cindy laughed. “Hayden looks at you like he has the lyrics to Jessie’s Girl runnin through his head.

I don't read many Y.A. books, so I'm rather picky when I do. I enjoyed Breaking the Bro Code! It was a fun love triangle story set in the 1980's and what's not to love about that???!! I found the girl fight to be spot on, not because I've been in them, but because it was so accurate 80's style. If you like classic 90210 type shows you will enjoy this book.

I bought this book, and five others, as a way to support independently published authors during "indieApril." Of the six, this was the only book that kept me reading after the first few chapters. I am not the intended young adult or teen audience for this story. But the writing is so clean and the characters so engaging, I was drawn into the story from the start. It also helps that I was in high school during the "Jesse's Girl" era, an 80's song that highlights the classic "bro code" conundrum. The TV and other pop culture references added to my enjoyment (at one point, the main character's best friend hilariously complains about her parents wanting to live like the "Huckstables," changing the dinner routine to require all family members to eat dinner together at the the table every night), but the characters won me over. We can't help but cheer for cross-country track star Molly, whose Mom works several jobs to make ends meet. We can't help but love Hayden, who starts off as Molly's friend, but secretly pines for her, agonizing over breaking the bro code to tell her how he feels (his best friend, Trevor, starts off as her boyfriend). The baddies in the book are deliciously evil, reminiscent of every "Mean Girls" scenario many girls endured in high school. At first, I thought this book would appeal only to teen girls. But the author knows her sports. She provides tension filled descriptions of boys' soccer as well as track scenarios. Guys get into fights in very realistic circumstances. And although the book follows the all-important love story format of girl meets boy, girl and boy break up, girl and boy get back together, the plot offers a few twists at the end that keep the story interesting. My only concern was one plot point that seemed unfeasible chronologically and the story becoming somewhat repetitive before the tension starts building at the end. But all in all, I would buy this book for any teenager. Author B. B. Swann weaves an impeccable tale!

4.5 stars, rounded up.

I didn’t know what the “bro code was going into this novel, so I’ll explain that first. Apparently it refers to when a man shouldn’t think or, hit on, a girlfriend of one of his guy friends. And while you might think this premise leads to cheating, this novel isn't about that, per se.

It’s about a girl named Molly who living with her single mother (that tries to give her daughter the best life possible given her terrible situation). Molly is on the track team, is super good at it, and has a boyfriend named Trevor. Trevor, as everyone points out, is a dick because he’s constantly attempting to pressure Molly into sex, which Molly doesn’t want (because it could risk her running career).

In a ploy to mess with her emotions, Trevor dumps her (his plan to get back together with her after) but once she’s dumped, Molly gets drunk and kisses Hayden (Trevor’s good friend and a guy who has had a crush on Molly forever).

This is where that bro code thing comes in. Hayden doesn’t want to break the bro code by dating Molly, because she was Trevor’s girl, but at the same time he can’t keep himself away from her. What’s a guy going to do, am I right?

I don’t want to spoil the rest of the story, but suffice it to say, Molly and Hayden are adorable together, and everything that attempts to keep them apart is awful-fawaffle.

This story is YA contemporary romance through and through. If you like that genre, I’m certain you’ll enjoy this—drama and all.

I marked my rating down slightly for the grammar. There are issues with commas and dialogue qualifiers, but no blatant misspellings or wrong uses of words. If you aren’t inconvenienced by small errors, you’ll be fine.

Overall, I would definitely recommend.

This sweet high school romance flipped me back to my own teenage years and I shuddered! I was reminded of the 1958 musical Gigi, where Maurice Chevalier sang "I'm glad that I'm not young any more". All the insecurity and angst that goes with being a young adult is best left in the past. Molly is very aware of the sacrifices her mother has made for her and being a responsible young lady, she does her best to alleviate her mother of some of the responsibility for her future education by concentrating on her running. Hayden has had a crush on Molly for some time but he is unwilling to break the Bro Code until Trevor himself breaks off with Molly. Then all bets are off. Hayden is mischief through and through but he is nevertheless a man of honour despite his 17 years. Dealing with the petty jealousies and competitiveness of high school puts stress on all the players, causing heartache and misery. This YA romance was well written with a message for not only young people but for everyone who reads the book. I enjoyed Hayden's character and his caring, supportive attitude towards Molly, who represents so many young woman of that age who are trying to find their place in this world. Cindy was larger than life and every girl needs a friend like her. The book is a standalone and can be read by all age groups, although it would appeal to a younger readership in general. I received this book for free from eBook Discovery. I voluntarily post this review. This is my honest review.

This is a pleasant story of a young girl determined to pursue her dream of a college scholarship. Along the way, she encounters the wrong guy, the right guy, a great BFF and strong parental figures. This all adds up to a well-written, wholesome book that the young reader will enjoy.
I won a copy of this book in a Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ giveaway for this honest review.

Great!

A coming of age novel involving love familiar to anyone who experienced their first love during adolescence. Although its target audience is teenagers, even as an adult, I enjoyed the read, especially all the 80s references! I look forward to reading more from this new author.

As a child of the 80s, this book brought back some great memories and some not so great memories. Two words... high. school. Literally like, gag me with a spoon. High school was the end all be all for all of us at the time. It’s no different for Molly or Hayden. Molly just wants to focus on running so she can get her scholarship and get the heck out of dodge and all the drama. Hayden has had a crush on Molly for over a year. So when he gets a chance, he takes his shot. But that proves to be harder than he thought. Insert more high school drama by the names of Trevor and Andrea. Both are the worst. We all knew someone like that in school and they were the ones that ruined it for everyone.

I liked Molly and her penchant for being on the straight and narrow. Gliding through school with great grades and just trying to maintain her goal of a track scholarship. But she raked on my nerves a few times. The phrase “book smart but lacks “street smarts comes to mind. Seriously, I wanted Cindy to smack her a few times. We should all have a bestie like Cindy. Loyal and a true ride or die friend to the end! Now Hayden, just a moment while I swoon please....*insert dramatic sigh with heart eyes*...he was VERY swoon worthy. So Hayden, he’s a jock with excellent soccer and leadership skills. He doesn’t play up to the typical player, king of the field, if you get my drift. Nope. He’s a romantic who wears his heart on his sleeve and only has eyes for one girl. Seriously, where were guys like this when I was growing up?! His buddy Mike is a sweetheart too and I can’t wait to read his and Cindy’s story next!! Now excuse me while I pop in my mixed tape and cruise the web for my next one-click. Like Doc said to Marty, “we don’t need wheels where we’re going! #BackInTime #BringBackThe80s 😎

When you have nothing else to read

I liked the story, it's a sweet romance, but that's about it. It follows Molly, who is a sweet yet competitive girl who fights for a better future, and her relationship with Hayden, a good guy who's been by her side since she moved to town.
It is written from the third-person perspective (which I recently discovered it outs me off, but that's just my personal taste), and flawlessly switches between Haydens and Molly's life at the moment.

Easy to read, it gives you a satisfying ending, but it feels short. I've seen better, even from unpublished/inexperienced authors, which is why I gave it 3 stars.

Overall it's a good story to read when you have nothing else.

HPE story perfect for a palate cleanser pick-me-up read after you've just read something depressing or scary. The characters are all one-dimensional and not at all intuitive, and the MC is very passive, but the storyline is cute.

*One note- I am super tired of the sassy, loyal, Black BFF trope. I know she is the MC in the next book but as a Black woman myself, I could not deal with her character

Good Story set in the 80's. Molly is set to break some records in track and has a good mom to help her as much as a single mom can. Molly is working to earn a scholarship to college to release the financial burden on her mom.

Mollys boyfriend fights that he's not spending enough time on him and they break up. Only he tries to manipulate her to get back together. Will Molly see through it?

If you grew up in the 80s, love romance stories or are currently in high school, this book is for you. None really apply to me. So why did I give the book 4 stars? Because it has a good story, has believable characters and is well written. When a novel has all these elements, you don't have to be into the genre to enjoy the read. Definitely worth a read.
