Day of the Predator

Liam O’Connor should have died at sea in 1912.
Maddy Carter should have died on a plane in 2010.
Sal Vikram should have died in a fire in 2026.

But all three have been given a second chance—to work for an agency that no-one knows exists. Its purpose—to prevent time travel destroying history . . .

When Maddy mistakenly opens a time window where and when she shouldn’t have, Liam is marooned sixty-five million years ago in the hunting ground of a deadly—and until now—undiscovered species of predator.

Can Liam make contact with Maddy and Sal before he’s torn to pieces by dinosaurs—and without endangering history so much that the world is overtaken by a terrifying new reality?

I live a nomadic existence with my wife Frances, and son Jacob. For now we're living in Norwich. I spent the first 10 years out of college in the music business chasing record deals and the next 12 years in the computer games business as a graphic artist and eventually a games designer. For those of you who like their computer games, here's some of the titles I've worked on:
Waterworld, Evolva, The Thing, Spartan, Gates of Troy, Legion Arena
Since signing up as an author with Orion, I seem to spend most of my time hunched over my laptop in various cafes and coffee bars sipping lattes, tapping keys and watching the ebb and flow of shoppers outside on the street. As I write this, I'm awaiting the launch of my next book - the sequel to , LAST LIGHT, and getting ready to find a publisher for the first book in a separate series, ELLIE QUIN. Ahead of me, lies research work for my next thriller, and also some screenplays I'm looking forward to writing. Although I'm glad to be where I am now, I do occasionally kick myself for not having succumbed to the writing bug much earlier. But then we all just muddle along through life, don't we? There's rarely a plan.

I read the first book in the series back in February and I loved it. However, now that I have read Day of the Predator, the second book in the series, I can honestly say that I have not been this excited about a series for a long time. As fas as anticipation for 'the next book' goes, I can compare it to how I feel about MG Harris' Joshua Files series and how I felt about the Percy Jackson books. And with Alex Scarrow having signed a nine book deal with Puffin I am looking forward to reliving this feeling a good number of times over the next few years. If he can maintain the quality over the whole series then Alex Scarrow will become as widely read as Riordan, Horowitz and Higson.

In the first book in the series we saw the recruitment of the TimeRiders team, three young people plucked from the jaws of death by the mysterious Foster. The story then saw our young heroes battling to reset time after a group of men travel back in time in order to change it, as they feel their 2066 world has become ruined by over-population, pollution and religious conflict. Their solution? Help Adolf Hitler to win the Second World War. This book encouraged the reader to question the morality of the actions of these men - if making a change in history will make the future world a better place then should this be seen as ethically acceptable? For me this was a stand out element of the first book, although in some ways it did overshadow some of the character development.

Day of the Predators is a very different set up. This time our heroes are tasked with going forward in time to prevent the assassination of a boy who will eventually develop the mathematical theories that will become the cornerstone of time travel development. However, as the result of an accident Liam O'Connor, the team's field agent, his genetically engineered 'bodyguard', and a school party of teenagers find themselves stranded sixty-five million years in the past, at a time when dinosaurs roamed the earth, and Liam has to be constantly reminded that every single action, however small, could have a disastrous effect on the future time line.

This is not a new concept in literature; I first read something similar in a comic strip many years ago (I think it was an epidode of Tharg's Future Shocks in 2000AD), and then later in Ray Bradbury's short story "A Sound of Thunder", but Alex Scarrow is delivering it to a totally new audience and in such a way that he will have these young adults hanging on his every word. In Day of the Predator Liam has to make some very difficult choices - if they stay and try to survive the consequences could damage the future, but then again so could their attempts to in some way send a message that the rest of the team will be able to retrieve in 2001, 65 million years later! All these questions and more will have readers constantly asking themselves "What if...?" and "but if they do that...?".

The nature of Liam's role in the team as field agent means that yet again his character is developed more than those of others. After all, it is Liam who is facing deadly predators in a world that is totally alien to that which he is used to. However, in the absence of Foster the role of team leader and chief strategist now falls on the relatively young shoulders of Maddy Carter. This is not a role that she takes on willingly, especially as she blames herself for the accident that has sent Liam hurtling back in time, and she is plagued with self-doubt. However, as the plot develops we also see Maddy gradually settling into this key role, making decisions that could impact not only on Liam's life but also on the lives of generations to come. We also see her agonising over the secrets she holds from the others, information that was imparted to her by Foster before he walked out of their lives at the end of the first book. Sal Vikram, the third member of the team, is still relegated to third place, with her role being largely a supporting one, with occasional flashes of briliance. Hopefully we will see more from Sal in the future.

The fourth character in the book is Bob, or Becks as he/she/it becomes in Day of the Predator. Bob's AI chip, rescued from its organic 'meat robot' form, is now inserted into the brain of a freshly 'grown' body, in order that Liam has a companion in his travels through time. The relationship between Liam and the newly formed Becks is a confusing one for the young Irish lad, and this confusion in his mind grows as together they face the dangers of Cretaceous USA. Becks also has to deal with the competing issues of her programmed Mission Priorities and her realisation that she is slowly developing traits that could almost be described as human. Should she proceed with the mission recommendations that her central processor is computing, or should she make allowances for the fact that she has cpmputed that she 'likes' Liam?

In reviews for books like this there are many cliched phrases uses, phrases such as "high octane", "nail-biting" and "a real page-turner". Howeer, I guarantee that every single one of these phrases, cliched though they may be, is entirely justified in any review about this book. If you have boys who are 12+ and are reluctant readers then buy them these two books before you go on holiday this summer, 'accidentally' leave the charger for their PSP/Nintendo DS/etc at home and maybe, just maybe, these could be the books to convert them to reading for enjoyment. If these books don't manage to get boys reading then there is little else that will.

3.5 MAMMA MIA QUANTO MI DIVERTONO QUESTI LIBRI

Tym razem jednak, początkowa misja zwiadowcza doprowadza do nieoczekiwanych konsekwencji, przenosząc naszych bohaterów daleko w przeszłość aż do epoki dinozaurów, czyli około 65 milionów lat przed naszą erą.

Ocena: ★★★★

"There be dinosaurs here, but not as we know them!"

Welcome one and all to the second book in Alex Scarrow's Timeriders series. I sound a little more upbeat in comparison to the first novel don't I? Well I am. It's much improved.

This time around Liam and his new female meat robot 'Becks' are sent forward in time to rescue a 'future' physicists, Edward Chan, who writes the first paper on theoretical time travel. Let's just say best laid plans are always prone to a mishap or two. It involves a pin-prick sized hole into another dimension (I should explain - fossil fuels have run out in the future, and scientists are trying to create a new energy called 'zero-point' energy. They tap a hole into another dimension), which has been opened to allow humanity to create a new energy form. BAM! All of a sudden, Liam, Becks, Edward and thirteen other souls are thrown back in time to the Cretaceous period.

During this, Maddy back at base realises she 'may' have made a big old balls up. From then on she turns into a bit of a annoying character, I'd say bitch, but that's so un-PC. She ends up going off on these massive rants that, for me, really destroy the character which was created from the first novel. That of being a controlled personality and of understanding. Sure it's a bad situation, but this is their first mission on their own.

Prose is strong this time around, the author being very descriptive with the surroundings of the characters - but not to the point where we are reading reams of pages of the stuff. Alex manages to make Texas sixty-five million years ago plausible with his writing style.

We're also dripped-fed some tantalising tib-bits about the agency Maddy, Sal and Liam work for. Not too much, just enough to give the reader a taste. Now that's far better story-telling than the 'feed them all now' ethos of the first novel.

Now some reviewers have said how historical accurate this it. I beg to differ, what a load of baloney. If you think we can go back sixty five million years and be historical accurate then you are bonkers. Think about it. For instances, if you go back to say Ancient 'Greek' times, we've got less than 5% of actual books we've known were written, let alone the manuscripts, plays, poetry and other works we don't know about. There lost. This applies to a similar amount from a archaeological perspective. What do we know from dinosaurs? It's a guessing game. Yes the DNA from bones can tell us some more, and also help us build a idea of what particular dinosaurs may have looked like. But to say it's a accurate novel - well no, it's not.

There's another reason I say all of this. Alex Scarrow actually comes up with a gem, which goes along the same lines of what I'm trying to say. We don't know everything, so why not present the reader with a challenging idea. Dinosaurs with rare intelligence. Seems plausible to me. Unfortunately for Liam and his chums these dinos aren't the friendly neighbourhood welcoming dinosaur committee. No, they kill for pleasure (apparently). Lead by Blood Claw, this pack of new predators have been killing other Ankylosaurs, Triceratops and Titanosaurs for sport. They view Liam and his gang as a threat, and begin to 'learn' from them by studying these strange 'creatures' and even learning their language. I'll stop writing now. Very original anyway if you buy it.

So we have to ask the question. Did dinosaurs die off from a meteor impact into the Yucatan Pennisula, or was it someone's cheap aftershave that disagreed with them? Who knows. Day of the Predators is a imaginative piece, that presents the reader with cryptic clues, suggestions and builds on a certain conspiracy that develops throughout this novel. Good stuff, enjoyed this muchly - and the ending, wow.

I loved the first book in the Time Riders series, and the second was even better! The thing that sticks out to me in these books is how well-researched they are. When dealing with advanced scientific technology and historic details, a lot of research is needed, and Scarrow has clearly spent a lot of time making sure to get the facts straight. Not only does he get them straight, but he explains the science in a way that the average teen will understand what's going on, while also managing to not "talk down" to his readers.

Along with the science of the time travel being interesting, this book was action packed and perfectly paced! I kept turning the pages because I needed to know what was going to happen next. There was never a dull moment. I especially loved seeing how what happened in the past affected the present.

Along with being incredibly creative and attuned to the scientific details of the story, Alex Scarrow is a magnificent writer. Some of the scenes were brilliantly done, such as the ones from Broken Claw's perspective (I imagine it must be difficult to get inside the mind of a primitive lizardy caveman creature!), and the scene where he showed the progression of time and how certain objects made it from the Cretaceous Era to the present. Scenes like those make this book even more unique than it already is, and also made me think about time and evolution and all that fun stuff.

I love the characters as well. Liam is such a good-hearted boy, and Maddy is smart and on her toes. I wish I knew more about Sal, but I'm trusting that we'll learn more about her as the series progresses. Scarrow also does a great job making their support unit -- who takes on a new identity in Day of the Predator -- a character that I connected with, too. Lastly, there was something dropped at the end that caught me totally by surprise! I'm not going to give it away, but it was a great twist :)

If you're a fan of time travel stories, then Time Riders is a must read! I can't wait to see what new adventures await the Time Riders as the series continues.

I started this months ago but there were a few things that made me put it down and never pick it up again:

The whole ordeal with Bob Junior being female. All the characters had such a sexist response to the situation. It was baffling. There is no reason the AI even needed to be assigned a human gender in the first place but the fact that the characters legitimately believed it would less capable than Bob was gross and sexist. I cannot believe that they went so far as to consider not sending Bob Junior on the mission at all. As if it would literally be better to have Liam without support than with an AI in a female-shaped body. 🙄
Also, the fact that Liam was even slightly attracted to Junior Bob's new body was gross. Why do we need to sexualise AIs like this?
The r-word is used twice within the first 50ish pages.
The Asian secondary character is described as Oriental.

was a big part of my childhood but I am no longer have an interest in reading the rest of the series.

Keby som to čítala v inom poradí, asi by ma to chytilo o veľký kus viac.
A som veľmi zvedavá, čo si ešte Alex pripravil

I really liked this book for many reasons. One was that it has a lot of time travel in it. Another is that it is about dinosaurs that are smarter than they were supposed to be. Last is that it has a lot of exciting elements in it.

No i totalnie kocham ten plot twist w ostatnim zdaniu! Także dziękuję, biegnę do trzeciego tomu, bo muszę wiedzieć, gdzie wylądują teraz :D

I loved the concept of this book. A group of people from the future recruiting people from the past to fix time whenever there is a breach. Of course, things don't always go according to plan. I loved the new type of dino and how it can mimic and learn from them. I really enjoyed the time waves and the changes made by one simple little act. I can't wait to see what happens next in this series.

So the last one had Nazis AND zombies, and this one only has dinosaurs. BUT, some of the dinosaurs are super-intelligent.

These books are absolutely bananas ridiculous, and I read them on flights where I know I'll need a good dose of distraction. Sometimes you just want to watch a movie where everything blows up, and this is the written equivalent. These are YA books, and I think there are lots of teens out there that would enjoy these quite a bit. Scarrow is pretty gleeful about plot twists and crazy problem scenarios, and these are just good fun.

This was the 2nd book of the series. It was incredible!!! Full of adventure of time travelling throughout history. Most chapters shifted from where but also when and which part of history do the Time Riders get themselves "temporarily" stuck in.The ending of this book has left me asking so many questions which I dont know the answer to. Absolutely thrilling!!
