Boris Vian

Boris Vian was a French polymath: writer, poet, musician, singer, translator, critic, actor, inventor and engineer. He is best remembered for novels such as L鈥櫭塩ume des jours and L'Arrache-c艙ur (translated into English as Froth on the Daydream and Heartsnatcher, respectively). He is also known for highly controversial "criminal" fiction released under the pseudonym Vernon Sullivan and some of his songs (particularly the anti-war Le D茅serteur). Vian was also fascinated with jazz: he served as liaison for, among others, Duke Ellington and Miles Davis in Paris, wrote for several French jazz-reviews (Le Jazz Hot, Paris Jazz) and published numerous articles dealing with jazz both in the United States and in France.

I'm afraid I found this book rather revolting. It is meant to be read ironically at some level (at least, it is widely claimed that that's the correct interpretation), but to me it came across more as sadistic pornography. Though the author was, as usual, very inventive. He wrote the book in French, but claimed it was a translation of an American thriller written by a hitherto unknown black author; the book, Vian said, couldn't be published in the US because the story involved a black hero who seduces and finally kills two white women in a particularly horrible way. The text is cleverly mangled so that it indeed appears to have been translated from English.

The book was a bestseller, but destroyed poor Vian. First he got fined 100,000 Francs when someone committed a rape/murder similar to the one in J'irai cracher, and the court found that he was partly responsible. Then he had a fatal heart attack while watching the premiere of the very bad movie version, which he disowned - among other things, they had pasted on a happy ending, despite the fact that it is structurally a Greek tragedy. His last words were something like "Those assholes are never Americans", and he keeled over. He was only 40.

The streak of bad luck continued even after his death. The producers of Day of the Woman, claimed by Roger Ebert to be one of the most nauseating films of all time, decided to rename it after Vian's book, despite the fact that there were almost no points of contact beyond the fact that both were deranged rape/revenge fantasies. Vian disliked the first movie enough to die rather than watch it to the end, and he would almost certainly have disliked the second one even more.

I feel this story needs a moral, but have no idea what it might be! Maybe some insightful person can point it out?

It's not an easy book to catalogue. I found it, in general and apart from all the violence, an acceptable and entertaining book. But not suitable for all stomachs.

I am sure some Vian fans will take issue with my putting this novel on the pulp fiction level but really, is it necessary to brag about fucking 13 year olds and abusing them in order to be considered a "rebel" as a writer? Do I absolutely have to be disgusted and want to throw up due to the oppressive misogyny and violence of the story to call it art? I draw the line here (as I did with the second Larssen book) that this was too gratuitous, too full of hate of women, too devoid of humanity or humour. I am far from puritanical as anyone looking through my read list on GR would see. I was not put off by the bizarre scenes in Roth or Pynchon or even Sade. But I felt that Vian was just writing to smell his cum as he masturbated on the pages. He did not care about what his eventual readers would thing or how painful it might be to read for them. It is incredibly rare that I do not finish a book, but I felt physically ill reading I'll Spit on Your Grave. I find this book contemptuous and wish I had not attempted to read it.
That being said, it seems that the current President shares the same disdain and lack of respect for women that Vian did :/

鈥淣on c'猫 che una cosa che conta:
vendicarsi e vendicarsi nella maniera pi霉 completa possibile.鈥

鈥淪puter貌 sulle vostre tombe鈥 猫 una dichiarazione di guerra fin dal suo titolo.

A dirla tutta, all鈥檈poca lo scandalo provocato da questo breve romanzo lo rese celebre mentre altre sue opere sono state rivalutate solo oggi.
Il genere in questione 猫 quello dell鈥hard boiled dove mistero e violenza s鈥檌ntersecano.

Pubblicizzato come scabroso 猫, in molte parti, veramente disturbante.

No wonder "j'irai crach茅 sur vos tombes" was condemned and banned in France in the 1940s. This is The most scandalous book you can imagine. Every single thing about is wrong and unacceptable and should make you close it and throw it away and stop reading in disgust. And yet and yet. Vian sublimates the subject. And not through some kind of cheesy lyricism but by accentuating the traits of each and every character. It is as if everyone is a caricature of a part of ourselves and Lee Anderson, the hero or anti-hero, an embodiment of every single thing we don't want to be. And yet Vian's genius makes it so we love Lee. We understand him and empathize with him and in the lead up to the end we want his criminal plan to succeed. It hurts us to see ourselves cheering for the criminal and we're left in this kind of awe, wondering where our humanity went! And yet Vian writes in a way hat we close the book forgiving both towards his characters and towards ourselves.

Tek kelimeyle muhte艧em bir kitap.

陌nsan谋n d眉nyada izledi臒i son 艧eyin "Mezarlar谋n谋za T眉k眉rece臒im" olmas谋da 艧a艧谋rt谋c谋:)

Efenim kitapta bir gen莽 ba艧rolde. 20'li ya艧lar谋n谋n 2. yar谋s谋nda oldu臒unu tahmin ediyoruz. Vian bize b眉t眉n bilgileri hemencecik verivermiyor.

Herkes onu "beyaz" zannediyor.

脰rne臒in 12 ya艧谋nda bir k谋zca臒谋zla para kar艧谋l谋臒谋 beraber oluyor Lee, ki elimden kitab谋 f谋rlat谋p att谋m. Devam edebilmek i莽in kendimi 莽ok zorlamam gerekti.

Hemde elleriyle par莽alayarak, tekmeleyerek.

Hala anlam谋yorum bu kitab谋 yazacak ne ya艧ad谋 Vian.

Okumak gerek bu kitab谋. Kitab谋n sonun da ben Lee' ye kesinlikle k谋zmad谋m. K谋zamadm. Vian buna m眉saade etmemi艧. Bir hayvan yaratay谋mda t眉rl眉 t眉rl眉 莽irkinlikler yapt谋ray谋mda herkeslerde ondan nefret etsin sonrada onu 枚ld眉reyim 'i yazacak kadar basit bir yazar de臒il.

Lee 'ye 莽ok ac谋yorum. Hatta arkas谋ndan yas tutuyorum. Tabi di臒er iki k谋z谋nda. Yaz谋k. 脟ok yaz谋k oldu.

Loathsome in content and sublime in its detachment, this book of violence is truly a work of perfect self-control.

The content
In , only hints at his protagonist's acts of depravity and evil. This tale could have easily belonged to Dorian as much as it did to Lee Anderson. Manipulation, pedophilia, rape and murder can all be found inside.

The theme
Hatred, sexism, revenge and racism are so heavy with the weight of history, a wrong word can spark a public outrage.

Movies and books that deal with them often try to go down the beaten path and come across as one-note, or attempt something new and are inevitably accused of pandering, or levity, or shallowness. The state of acceptable speech is for other people than myself to address.

And Vian belonged to a different century, as his book is the equivalent to driving a SUV through the doors of political correctness.

The narration
Most of the narration of the book is 1st person, limited to snippets that grow to reveal the whole tragic backstory of Lee. And yet, as he grows closer to his goals, the shallow narrative of personal justice starts being overbalanced by the suffering of others. Yet because of this type of narrative, his perspective does not allow us the comfort of being detached. The protagonist doesn't think much beyond his goal, he's a targeted missile. He doesn't try to justify himself. Thus for most of the book, the feeling is of being dragged and hurtling ever faster down something we can't close our eyes to.

The end
While a lot of books suffer from weak endings. Usually, the plot ends and the last chapter is... an afterthought. Here, what happens in the last two chapters is a stylistic choice. It leans on its core themes to drive the plot lines. Therefore, rather than letting the story end as plot dictated, it ends with a final revealing portrait of Lee Anderson. Indeed, Vian's story rushes along the last pages as if it would break through the back cover, and holds up this twisted mirror before our own faces.

This is not an easy book to read and it won't be everyone's cup of tea. It is brutal, especially in the things it insinuates. Stylistically, it has the chiseled precision of Basil Hallward's portrait.

If "Foam of the Daze" is lightness with bitter sweet taste, than Vian's "I Spit on Your Graves" is a work of pure hate, lust and evil. There are two (or a lot more) sides to Vian's work - and he was also a masterful 'pulp' writer.

For more info on this check out :

It's kind of creepy to push one's book to the general public, but then again I just paid for it, I didn't write it! Somehow in English Vian slipped into the spaces of time. Whenever the names Camus or Sartre is mentioned, so should Vian's. He's not only a major writer, but also the key as well as the lock with respect to cool culture of Paris circ. 1947 to his death in 1959. A friend to the greats, who often said he was a great as well - plus a fantastic personality to hang out with. Check out 'Manual of Saint Germain des Pr茅s" by Vian. I co-edited that book of course!

Had I read this back in the day then there is little doubt I would have been shocked and appalled at its content, especially had I been an American, but in 2021 it all felt rather tame to me. Yes it's racist, nasty and features teen rape, but there is more to this novel than just picking out the controversial bits. It very much reads like a hard to put down hard-boiled thriller that was tense, brooding, sharp edged, and even funny - that would be darkly funny rather than funny ha ha. Set in the deep south the narrative follows Lee Anderson, a black man of white complexion, who is out for revenge after the murderous lynching of his brother. He targets two white girls, two daughters of a rich plantation owner, and subjects them to sexual humiliation, and even turning them against each other, before the bloody finale. Vian neither condemns or validates the actions of Anderson, it just is what it is. The whole back story - which I won't get in to now - of Vernon Sullivan and the 1959 film of the book that ultimately led to death of Vian is an interesting one. Nowhere near as good as L'脡cume des jours, and it does get repetitive, but it wasn't half as bad as what I thought it would be.

I despise this book, I don't recomend it to anyone. It is basically an ode to rape of minors and violence. It is written so viscerally that makes you want to stop reading constantly, I finished it because it was short. and wanted to see the protagonist dead. No wonder it was forbidden in France when it was released in the 1950s.

Ka啪em 鈥瀌obar roman鈥 iako sam svjesna da ovo ne mo啪e 膷itati ba拧 svako.

Pod hla膷ama, u donjem delu njegova trbuha se jo拧 uvek videla podrugljiva izbo膷ina.鈥
