In the second novel of the saga, El laberinto de las aceitunas (The Labyrinth of the Olives, 1982) he confirms his talent as parodist; the novel is one of his most successful works. A novel about the political chaos in Spain in 1936 leading up to the Spanish Civil War. An Englishman who is an art professor is hired to go to Spain to evaluate some paintings. While he is told that the purpose of the valuation is for the owner to get money to flee the country, it may actually be to support Spain’s radicals seeking to overthrow the government.
The story turns into a kind of spy thriller as the Englishman is followed by agents of the Spanish government and the British consulate as well as Russian spies. And just like James Bond, when dead bodies start turning up in the streets, live bodies of three women turn up in his bed.
The fictious art story serves as a foil for writing about real people who were involved in the chaotic events. One of the women he gets involved with is really the lover of the leader of the Spanish communist party. He even overhears secret planning by Franco’s group at the art owner’s house as the art owner plays both sides of the political fence.
One of the valuable paintings may be a missing painting by Velazquez, so we get a lot of information and analysis of paintings by Velazquez and Titian and even biographical info about Velazquez. Along the way we read about a comparison of Spanish and British customs and culture and even how their paintings differ. For example, Spanish art reflected “…the Catholicism of the Counter-Reformation � a revolt by the more sensual southern Christians against the cerebral Christianity proposed by men of the north... the Christ of these believers was the Christ of the Gospels: a Mediterranean man who lives his life eating, drinking, chatting with friends and enjoying relationships with women…�
The fragile Spanish Republic was brand new, having been established in 1931. We see the immense complexity of the politics and violence leading up to the Civil War. With hindsight, while one might say that the fascist Spanish Falange party supported the military takeover, in reality the two groups never trusted each other. When murders of priests, arson of churches and other violence occurred was it the anarchists doing it or was it really done by the fascists it in hopes that the radicals would be blamed and their leaders jailed?
The socialists and communists fought among themselves. Then there were the Carlists, the monarchists who wanted to restore royalty. Labor unions and rural workers� parties wisely didn’t trust any political parties. The units of the military didn’t trust each other � maybe the Army, Navy and Air Force were all planning coups. But, unlike the “left,� the “right� was always relatively unified in having a common purpose: preserving their money, land, possessions and power; the left was always in conflict and competition among factions. No wonder chaos ensued.
There is some good writing. Two lines I liked:
Said by the police about the art professor: “Even though he studied at Cambridge, he is not a queer or a Communist.�
“…this is not a poor country. This is a country of poor people.�
The novel won two prizes when it was published in Spain in 2010 under the title Riña de gatos (Rush of the Cats) � the Primo Planeta and the European Book Prize. A bit slow in places but all in all a good read.

“Beyond the entrance to the church the snow was coming down hard, and he was soon lost in a whirling mass of heavy snowflakes so thick and white they seemed to leave the rest of the world in impenetrable darkness. This phenomenon seemed to him to reflect his state of mind, now the scene of a desperate battle.�
Notwithstanding his Oxbridge education, art historian Anthony Whitelands strikes me as a very foolish character. He seems to stumble from one blunder to the next in this tale. Irritatingly so. He happily hands over personal belongings into supposed safekeeping to a complete stranger, he accepts invitations against his better judgement; without any difficulty at all he constantly finds himself in difficulties. He is polite, well meaning, naive... I think that you get the picture.
We are told that “Anthony was naturally phlegmatic�, but this reader sees none of the phlegmatic Englishman about him; on more than one occasion and at the drop of a hat he cries buckets in the presence of strangers, and talks very excitedly at other times. He is certainly not cool, calm and collected.
All the above would not be so bad for Anthony in normal circumstances, but on assignment in Spain to authenticate some paintings he finds himself ensnared in a tangle of politics just before the breakout of the Spanish Civil War. Soon security police, spies and others of every political faction are after him. As the dangers increase the plot becomes quite farcical. And let’s not forget about all the nubile young ladies who are after him, only to add to his various woes.
This book won the coveted Planeta Prize. The novel has an interesting historical setting and discussions on art (particularly Velázquez), much adventure and humour, but the writing isn’t particularly inspiring (perhaps it is more so in the original Spanish). For the most part my credulity was stretched to its limit. In this comedy of errors the author seems to be cocking a snook at the hapless Englishman in Madrid.

رواية بوليسية شيقة تدور أحداثها في مدريد عام 1936. حيث رصد الكاتب الوضع السياسي والاجتماعي والعسكري في تلك الفترة، أي قبل اندلاع الحرب الأهلية الأسبانية. بطلها البروفيسور البريطاني أنتوني المتخصص بالفن الأسباني في عصر النهضة. يسافر الناقد الفني من لندن إلى مدريد من أجل صفقة حساسة ومهمة، فيجد نفسه في وضع لا يحسد عليه.
الرواية تجمع بين الفن والتاريخ والحب والحرب. جميلة وشيقة خصوصًا لمحبي الفن والرسم واللوحات، ولمحبي التاريخ الإسباني.

أن تقرأ للأدب الإسباني، معناه أن تعتاد التفاصيل، والإسهاب، والاستطراد، وألا تتعجل الأحداث، ولا الأسباب، ولا النتائج، فعادة ما يتطلب منك الأدب الإسباني أن تتقن فن الصبر .. وأن تكون في مود مناسب، حتي لا تظلم الكتاب معك .. وأن تتوقع جرعة من الديستوبيا، غالبا في معظم الروايات، فمن يعشق أدب الديستوبيا، سيعشق بالتأكيد الأدب الإسباني
نعود للرواية ... هي القراءة الأولي للأديب الكبير إدواردو ميندوثا، ورغم توقعي لكثرة التفاصيل، وبعض الملل، إلا أنني لم اوفق معه في هذا اللقاء الأول ... ولا أريد أن أظلم الرواية معي، لا، الرواية بها كم من المجهود يستحق الإشادة .. وقدرة علي تذكر تفاصيل ربما تخونك أنت ذاكرتك في الاحتفاظ بها، وربما لو كنت صبرت علي الرواية أكثر لكنت أحببتها أكثر، ولكني لم أتقن فن الصبر لأكثر من منتصفها تقريبا، وربما أعود لأكملها مرة أخري، وربما أجرب حظي مع ميندوثا في كتاب آخر، وهذا غالبا ما سيحدث
ميندوثا، كل قراءة جديدة في الأدب الإسباني، هي جائزة لي في حد ذاتها، وكل اسم يضاف إلي قائمتي متعة لا أنكرها أبدا، حتي لو لم يعجبني الكتاب .. ولقد كنت جائزتي الجديدة هذا الشهر ❤️

This was one of those novels that I really wanted to like and that I should have enjoyed tremendously, yet, I struggled with it.
Hear me out: I have a thing (a bit of an obsession) with everything and anything Spanish and/or Latin American. I love Madrid and I am terribly fond of museums, have spent quite a few hours in the Prado museum and am familiar with Diego Velasquez's works. All these elements were present and had centre stage in this novel.
I should have been very fond of our main hero, Englishman Anthony Whitefields, a thirty-something art historian, specialised in Spanish paintings. He has a great fondness of Spain, especially of Madrid and is absolutely obsessed with Velasquez's paintings. He finds himself inadvertently immersed in the pre-revolutionary Spain, where he encounters different echelons of the Spanish society, from old money noblemen to new fascists and dirt poor women, who have to prostitute themselves for survival. Through all these adventures, Anthony Whitefields is a hapless observer, whose main and only focus is to bring to England a newly discovered Velasquez painting.
This novel is a comedy of errors and absurd of sorts, at times satirical and where there's an intense sense of adventure and history happening.
Many aspects of the novel didn't quite gel well and felt contrived. I love art, painting and history, but Whitefields' incessant monologs on Velasquez's paintings and his life were so long, so tedious, even I got bored and skipped over them at times.
Many secondary characters burst into long speeches with lots of unrelated anecdotes, which, after a while, became tedious.
I don't know if it was the translation that failed it, I thought the writing and the tone felt old-fashioned, but not in a good way. It's not even very literary, in the wordy, sophisticated, complex writing kind of way, at least I would I would have admired that. There were no quotable paragraphs, no "wow, this is some good writing" moments.
I've looked up this novel and its author and I was shocked to read that it won one of the richest literary prizes around - the Spanish Premio Planta - worth 600,000 Euro (approx $675,000 US)! Quite incredible, because while this is not terrible, and some aspects are interesting and well researched, it's no literary classic, nor is an easy, funny, quirky read.
This is a novel that could have been great, but it felt to impress and/or entertain.
I've received this novel via NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review.

Eduardo Mendoza es un autor que se conoce muy bien a sí mismo y eso se nota. Sabe muy bien cómo jugar sus cartas y cuáles son sus caballos ganadores. Este libro tiene un protagonista que sobresale, desde mi punto de vista, por encima de todo lo demás. Anthony Whitelands es ocurrente, eficaz y, a pesar de su nacionalidad, más conocedor de España que muchos de por ahí. Hace que la trama y todas las escenas se vuelvan más cercanas y entretenidas. Mendoza hace alarde de su buen uso del sarcasmo y el sentido del humor, sin duda marcas de la casa, y de una variedad léxica que sabe adaptarse camaleónicamente a los personajes, a su educación y a su bagaje socio-cultural. Donde sí me ha fallado la novela es en su tizne, para mi gusto, demasiado político. Yo no soy muy fan de las intrigas políticas (y viendo como está el patio, últimamente menos todavía), por eso creí que al ser el protagonista un experto en arte, todo lo correspondiente a la Guerra Civil sería un escenario, pero llega un punto en el que el protagonista se ve envuelto en jardines que no son muy de mi agrado. Aun así, es un libro muy bien escrito y que hará las delicias de aquellos que disfruten del humor, el arte y la historia política española.

Por fin me reencuentro con Eduardo Mendoza. Después de sus últimas decepcionantes publicaciones, Mendoza vuelve por donde solía, con una obra en la linea de la Ciudad de los Prodigios, con la que disfruté hace 19 años.
Ambientada en el Madrid de la segunda república, con la excusa de Velázquez de fondo, la novela nos traslada a un ambiente que desgraciadamente conocemos bien. Pero Mendoza lo aborda con humor, con las excentricidades propias de sus personajes y de las situaciones creadas. Alguna de ellas nos ponen en la butaca de un teatro, con escenas hilarantes. Maneja con soltura personajes reales y de ficción. Si algún pero he de ponerle es que, gracias a conocer profundamente Barcelona nos mete de hoz y coz en la ciudad de principios del siglo XX, mientras que podría haberle sacado más partido al Madrid republicano que nos presenta.
En resumen, un libro que me ha hecho pasar muy buenos momentos, con un final trepidante. No pretende más que lo que consigue, y para mi ese es otro de los alicientes de su lectura.

الكل مستعد لمقارعة الكل، للخداع، للاحتيال باسم الوطن أو الحب أو الدين. رواية ثرية في تفاصيلها وفي شخوصها وفي لغتها التي لا تخلو أحيانا من الحس الفكاهي. لا عجب من سمعة مندوثا كأحد أهم الكتاب الإسبان.

Set in Madrid in 1936, just before the Spanish Civil War, the story follows the exploits of young art expert Anthony, who having travelled to Spain to appraise an art collection finds himself increasingly caught up in the intrigues of various factions vying for power.
This was an excellent read, which perfectly captures the atmosphere of violence and fear in Spain at that time, as it spiralled towards war.
There are also some fascinating facts about art and history, which gives this book extra depth, and, as Anthony.....a character I couldn't help but like.... stumbles from one crises to another, there is an enjoyable element of dark humour and farce....definatly a five star read

A joy of a book. What a masterful writer who conveys the complex politics in a comedy of manners.
Aristocrats, spies and Velasquez makes quite a cocktail with the sex thrown in. But under the clever comedy you learn about the run up to the war with a view from the Nationalist side that we seldom get outside Spain.
You'll learn art, politics - even what Spain thinks of the British - and all in language that leaps off the page.
I read it in a day. Seldom get books like this anymore.

Para cualquier persona mínimamente puesta en la Historia de España, un libro entretenido sin ninguna duda que, aún así, resulta demasiado rimbombante y enrevesado hasta puntos que resultan ridículos. Si, por el contrario, uno no tiene la más remota idea de Historia (como tengo entendido que ha ocurrido con muchos extranjeros que han leído el libro) va a tener muchos problemas para entender lo que está pasando. Al tratarse de una novela de ficción histórica, se supone que tiene que explicar de manera sencilla los sucesos para ambientar la trama. Sin embargo, Riña de Gatos o no llega o se pasa. Hay cosas que quedan sin explicar, y las que se explican son tratadas en info-dumpings tan extensos que por poco me quedo dormida. Menos mal que me interesa el tema, porque si no me habría costado horrores terminar de leer.
Cambiando de tercio, no sé qué problema tiene el autor con las comas. La novela, aunque como ya he dicho se vuelve a veces algo rimbombante, está muy bien escrita si omitimos el detalle de las comas. No me suele molestar que haya muchas porque yo soy la primera que las pone por todas partes, pero de ahí a colocarlas en sitios donde no tiene ni pies ni cabeza que estén hay un trecho.
En cuanto a la trama, a mi parecer no ha hecho más que decaer. Comenzó siendo interesante, pero a medida que aparecían más y más personajes a complicarlo todo sin motivo alguno mi interés iba desapareciendo. Ya ni siquiera recuerdo cuál era el objetivo del libro. El cuadro que se supone debería ser el eje central de la novela pasa a un segundo plano tras unas pocas páginas y no volvemos a saber de él hasta el final de la novela, donde se resuelven todos los cabos sueltos con un diálogo deprisa y corriendo. Fantástica técnica narrativa merecedora de un Premio Planeta. Casi parece que el autor se aburrió de su propio libro y decidió dejarlo ahí, forzando una situación para que se acabase todo de una santa vez.
En resumen, me gustaría aclarar que a pesar de todo he disfrutado de la novela cuando no la miraba con ojos críticos. No me molestarían sus errores si fuera un libro cualquiera, pero recordemos que ganó el Premio Planeta en 2010. ¿Es entretenida? Sí. ¿Merece ganar uno de los mayores premios de la literatura en español? Todo es relativo y no he leído el resto de manuscritos participantes. Sin embargo, no creo que esté a la altura.

¿Cómo clasificar este libro?
Cuando comencé a leerlo, estaba convencida que se trataba de una novela histórica, que transcurría en el año 1936, en el borde de la Guerra Civil española, pero a medida que avanzaba comenzaron a ocurrir cosas y a presentar personajes históricos bajo un tono de burla, de chanza. Mientras más leía más llegaba al convencimiento que se trataba de un libro satírico de una época central en la historia reciente española: los falangistas son unos señoritos malcriados, Franco un aprovechador en las sombras, los comunistas la gran amenaza, los nobles ricos y preocupados por mantener su status quo.
El problema es que nunca he entendido el sentido de humor español. no me causa gracia ... lamentablemente para mi, que probablemente me pierdo de horas de carcajadas por ello.
En cualquier caso, es un libro para pasar el rato que no ayuda a comprender mejor las tensiones y conflictos que condujeron a una cruenta guerra civil en España, donde se mataron hermanos y cayeron en una dictadura que solo los condujo al retraso.

Another book that starts out really strong then totally falls apart into a total mess by the end.
The book is kind of like "The DaVinci Code," except set right before the Spanish Civil War. The setting and the historical characters (Franco even makes an appearance!) are by far the best parts. Lame treatment of the female characters, awkward resolution of the many plots by the end = not so great. The main character is also incredibly passive -- the whole book is basically different characters coming up to him and informing him of the latest developments. Two-thirds in, this gets really tiresome and implausible.
Bottom line: good airplane book, but there have got to be better books out there about the Spanish Civil War.

La historia es buena pero ha habido momentos en que me he aburrido un poco por tanta política como hay. Entiendo que por la época había que meterla pero casi ha quedado como tema principal. Me han gustado los toques de humor de Mendoza, apellidos de algunos personajes, personalidad de otros. Pero la historia en sí no sé, sinceramente no la veo para un premio. Pero todo esto es mi humilde opinión.

أحسست بأن كتابة الرواية لم تكن سوى ذريعة من المؤلف لإلقاء محاضرة تاريخية/سياسية طويلة ومملة حول إرهاصات الحرب الأهلية الإسبانية. ليست لدي مشكلة، من ناحية المبدأ مع ذلك، ولكن كان بإمكانه على الأقل أن يفعل ذلك بشكل أقل وضوحًا وفجاجة، لكيلا أشعر كقارئ أنني دفعت الباب الخطأ وعوض الدخول إلى قاعة سينما دخلت إلى فصل دراسي.

El crítico de arte inglés Anthony Withelands viaja al Madrid republicano para tasar un cuadro a cambio del cual un duque espera un sustancioso beneficioso. Para su sorpresa, el cuadro podría tratarse de un Velázquez inédito. Pero muchas más sorpresas están por ocurrir en una ciudad donde ideologías, Gobierno, Ejército y policía están al borde del derrumbe... hasta el punto de que el cuadro puede quedar en un lugar muy secundario.
Debo decir que estoy maravillado con todo lo que contiene esta novela. Tiene un poder soberbio para enganchar al lector porque en cada página están ocurriendo nuevos giros. Los personajes que se incorporan son creíbles: el escenario de la sociedad de 1936 está representado por figuras de la talla de Azaña, Primo de Rivera o Alcalá Zamora, que se confunden con parte de la alta aristocracia y del proletariado más maltratado. Las intrigas de espionaje y suspense policial - todas ellas muy coherentes para la época - rodean al protagonista y a las convulsas calles de la capital con sismos constantes y elevando la tensión al máximo, con un personaje principal amigo de llegar hasta el fondo de la verdad. Y si alguien se lo preguntaba, hay sitio para el amor y para sentimientos de compasión en todo preludio a la guerra.
Y, para mí un hecho que merece también un elogio: la constante cultura que se destila constantemente en la novela. Mendoza nos ilustra con muy bien el trasfondo político de este período. Pero si hasta da lecciones magistrales de Arte, ¡y hasta nos habla de la trascendencia de los escritores del Siglo de Oro!
El Premio Planeta, por tanto, no requiere de ninguna explicación. Disfrútenlo.

September 22, 2016Eduardo Mendoza no defrauda, escribe un gran libro y lo corta de un tajo al final sin muchos reparos, dejando algún cabo suelto oculto tras otras incógnitas que deja resolver según el gusto del lector. En mi opinión sobresale la relación entre el protagonista y Paquita y los comentarios sobre Velázquez, y en general el arte, que lo hacen diferente a su habitual narrativa siendo un poco más lento y menos banal que de costumbre. Me ha sorprendido sobre todo en el tema amoroso, donde en otros libros sólo aparece como encuentros sexuales ocasionales y extravagantes mientras que esta vez parece darle mayor importancia y delicadeza; aunque manteniendo personajes propios como una puta y en especial un personaje estelar que es Lilí, que hila humor y sexo. También destaca la visión de los preámbulos de la guerra civil, ofreciendo varias perspectivas (fascista, militarista, republicana, marxista...) de una forma muy entusiasta. Todo aquél que quiera buscar la posición del autor al respecto de la contienda creo que lo va a tener difícil. En definitiva, un libro que se desmarca de lo que he leído sobre Mendoza pero muy interesante, me ha vuelto a atrapar.

كنت أعلم تماماً أن تلك رواية مبنية على وقائع حقيقية قبيل الحرب الأهلية في إسبانيا عام 36 وخصوصاً في مدريد وذلك أشعرني بالخوف من قراءتها وجعلها على قائمتي القريبة نسبياً ولكني شجعت نفسي أخيرا وقرأت 440 صفحةً من المتعة الخالصة وبلا أي لحظة ملل.
بطلنا الإنجليزي ذو ال33 عاماً، الناقد الفني والمتخصص بالتاريخ الإسباني واللوحات الفنية والقادر على تقييمها يتم ترشيحه من قبل وسيط فني لتقدير لوحات فنية عند دوق إسباني وأثناء القيام بتلك المهمة يجد نفسه طرفاً رئيسيا في مشاكل ليس له بها علما بل وأصبح على أول قوائم المطلوبين وقائمة الاغتيالات السياسية في صراع بين أكثر من دولة. يتخلل كل ذلك علاقة حب من نوعِِ غريب غير أن السمة الأساسية للرواية هي تعريفك بكواليس الحرب الأهلية وقتذاك.
ترجمة رائعة جدا جميلة وسلسة وتنصح بترجمات د.طه زيادة وأعمال مندوثا بالطبع.

This was an interesting read. Anthony Whitelands, a gentleman and art historian (specializing in Velázquez) travels to Madrid in 1936. Actually, he is supposed to assess a picture that is with an aristocratic family, but he gets caught in the turmoil of the Spanish Civil War. He is spied on by the Spanish police and also monitored by the English embassy. He is used by various political groups, although he is politically neutral and is not interested in it at all. He gets involved in love affairs, which must not be. Like the cat, he must have seven lives because there are always dead people around him, only he is spared.

I'm convinced this is an excellent book that got lost in poor translation. I happen to speak Spanish, and I was able to correct mentally some of the poorly translated parts. Many of the colloquial--I believe meant to be funny and show the charming Spanish culture--language and folklore translated awkwardly, distracting the reader.
The first part of the book was a bit too slow for my liking. I believe some of the passages about Velasquez and art could have been shorter. It dragged and dragged for pages to where I almost wanted to quit. I disliked the stupid Anthony Whitelands throughout the whole book. What a stupid and annoying character!
However, in the second part of the book things pick up, and it became quite interesting. The story takes place in 1936's Spain. A tumultuous and bloody period leading to the Spanish Civil Wary and Franco's 39 years dictatorship. The crazy story of the stupid Englishman intertwines with the local events and twists and turns along a with a picturesque crew of characters. At points, it was hard to keep up with who was who and how their plot lines played a role in the main story.
I have mixed feelings about writing a review for this book. I think the book honestly deserves a higher rating than what currently shows here on ŷ, but I can't help to see why it has low ratings. Had I not be familiar with the environment and culture, I would have hated it too. Since I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review of this edition, my rating is done to reflect so.

Es la historia de un inglés un poco cretino, mujeriego, experto del arte español del Siglo del Oro que va a Madrid en 1936. Durante el viaje en el tren se expone el problema : escribe una carta a su amante para acabar su relación, además de hacerse notar ya por un policía español. Cuando llega a Madrid, va en un bar donde un hombre le propone ir a ver mujeres, pierde sus papeles mientras ve a una prostituta. Poco después, un estafador especialista de la venta en el mercado negro (de obras de arte) le pone en contacto con un hombre político español que quiere huir a Inglaterra o al menos vender su colección particular. Pues el problema es que el inglés cuando valora una obra de arte excepcional va a la embajada de Inglaterra para decirle todo aunque se supone que guardaría el secreto para su cliente, y el policía español (del tren) que le hacía seguir está también por ahí para evitar la "huida del patrimonio nacional". Conclusión : la trama no es nada excepcional, ya que se adevina que el inglés tendrá una relación amorosa con una de las hijas de su cliente, es estúpido desde el principio y no hay nada de suspense ni de cómico para mi que he visto demasiadas peliculas. Una lástima, tenía todo los ingredientes para hacer algo muy bueno.

Изключително лек и четивен стил, но нека авторът напипа по-интересни теми, ако иска да ме спечели като читател. Книгата разказва за англичанин, изкуствовед, разбирач от картини, който преди испанската революция е поканен в Мадрид, за да оцени платно, което уж е на популярен художник и никога досега не е виждало бял свят. Чрез продажбата на картината собственикът й - херцог, иска да купи оръжие, за да участва в революцията. Сюжетът на много места дава ненужни за мен обяснения - от прекалено много информация за политически събития до описателно обрисуване на картини с думи - е тва най го мразя "В долния ляв ъгъл се виждат двата крака на елен, в центъра има пияна жена, която във вдигната си дясна ръка държи сборник на Езоп", примерно... Ту мъч ми дойде. Ако стилът не бе така лек за четен с удоволствие бих дал единица, но точно това ме накара да я оценя с двойка. Едва ли след година ще помня тази книга. Като цяло слабо попадение от инак любимата ми поредица на "Колибри" - "Съвременна европейска проза".

La historia es buena y la trama empieza bien pero enseguida me aburrió, además no ha sabido encontrar el equilibrio entre historia y ficción: Hay momentos en los que abusa de datos históricos y otros en los que se echan en falta, tampoco me ha convencido el abuso de signos de puntuación innecesarios. En definitiva me falta el humor y la intriga de otras obras de Eduardo Mendoza y no me parece a la altura de un premio Planeta.

Un inglés en el convulso Madrid previo al estallido de la Guerra Civil. En la contraportada dice que tiene un punto de humor, que yo no he visto. Retrata a la perfección el Museo del Prado y muchos rincones de Madrid.
