This one-act comedy, set in a Pullman car on a train traveling from New York to Chicago in December, 1930, introduces techniques Wilder would use in future three-act plays: The stage is virtually bare, with only a balcony or bridge and two flights of stairs, and the play is narrated by a Stage Manager. One of the characters speaks words that foreshadow Emily's words in Our Town. The play includes a character representing Grover's Corners, Ohio-a forerunner of Our Town's Grover's Corners, New Hampshire. The cast includes the hours of the day, the weather, the planets, and supernatural beings. Conventional time is suspended, and the only true measures of existence are life and death. Pullman Car takes us on a metaphorical journey by train through the American landscape, a diverse band of travelers encapsulated in a Pullman car hurtle through time, space and a range of emotions.

This is weird and I'm a big fan of weird, but after reading Wilder's play Our Town.....and awarding it 5 Stars, I am so disappointed.

Was drawn to this play by the setting....a train traveling from New York to Chicago in 1930 with a cast of 5 women and 12 men.

I knew going in PULLMAN CAR was a super short one act play, but just didn't feel the suspension of time nor could I identify the presence of a supernatural being....although planets are mentioned and there is unexplained death.

Nope. Cannot recommend this one.

At first, I didn't think much about this. It seemed weird and disjointed, and I wasn't connecting with it the way I hoped I would. But wow, the last half of the play tugged at my soul. It was so deep and beautiful. It's one of those plays that takes a bit of thought in your approach to reading it - I was unpacking thoughts and themes and messages for quite a while after finishing. It sort of sneaks up on you and then catches you by surprise with how much it holds. I really loved this and will definitely be back to read it again.

I dunno what's going on with American literature, it's kinda of childish and not yet ready to publish, kinda a weird unfinished draft, I don't know what type of writing is this.

My suggestion, if you want to die out of boring, read this.

I loved this one! Really complicated but I can tell I would love to design and direct it. So human and beautiful. This is my first by Thornton Wilder, and he鈥檚 living up to the hype.

This play was thought provoking, but short. Thornton Wilder does something in nearly all his plays that I have seen hardly any other play-writes do: he personifies time and place. This was interesting to read and ponder, but it is not among my favorites.
