In Death #25

Creation in Death

Rate this book
When the body of a young brunette is found in East River Park, artfully positioned and marked by signs of prolonged and painful torture, Lieutenant Eve Dallas is catapulted back to a case nine years earlier. The city was on edge from a killing spree that took the lives of four women in fifteen days, courtesy of a man the media tagged “The Groom”—because he put silver rings on the fingers of his victims.

But this time, it becomes chillingly clear that the killer has made his attack personal. The young woman was employed by Eve’s billionaire husband, Roarke, washed in products from a store Roarke owns, and laid out on a sheet his company manufactures. Chances are, The Groom is working up to the biggest challenge of his illustrious career—abducting a woman who will test his skills and who promises to give him days and days of pleasure before she dies: Eve.

All of 's books are good, but this one is really, really good. It has everything we expect - humour, an intriguing crime, excellent police work and wonderful lovable characters. And then there are Roarke and Eve, two of the best characters you can meet in print. Who doesn't want to be in a relationship like theirs?

I don't know how the author does it but I always read (and reread) her books in a few hours. They just grab me in at the beginning and spit me out at the end totally happy. is particularly grabby!

Loved every minute of it.

A very creepy serial killer who was on the hunt ten years ago and is now back to pick up his "work". And, this time he has planned to make Eve part of his work. She is supposed to be his last piece before he retires.

Well, good luck with that, Mr. Serial Killer! Many have tried, but none have killed Eve yet. She's pretty unkillable. As a matter of fact, her luck is sometimes TOO good. I am wondering if the past/future dream of a Robocop really did come true.

Oh my gosh, she is Robocop! She says this at least 5 times in each book.

Aside from the awesomeness of a psychotic, torturing, serial-killer, we also get plenty of Roarke - who is one of the best characters of this series. He and Eve have settled into the comforts of a good marriage:

Give and take, she reminded herself. "Okay. But there go my plans to slip off and meet Pablo the pool boy for an hour of hot, sticky sex."

"We all have to make sacrifices. Myself, I've had to reschedule my liaison with Vivien the French maid three times in the last couple of days."

That's the sign of a healthy marriage - the ability to joke around with each other. My husband and I are always joking around. He says he can't believe he married a crazy shrew. I say that he can let the door hit him in the ass on the way out. Haha! Fun times. We are always joking like that.

Roarke never takes Eve's griping seriously. He's patient and puts aside his own work and needs to help her with her work. He is even working in the police station with her on this case. Of course, this concerns Eve because he will "spoil all the cops".

(Eve:) "look, don't go buying stuff."

(Roarke:)" Such as?"

"E-toys, new furniture, catered lunches, dancing girls, whatever... You're not here to supply the NYPD."

"What if I get hungry, then feel the urge to dance?"

Eve, just send Roarke my way. I am cool with being spoiled. I actively encourage that kind of behavior. If I'm not making my husband run around trying to please me and buy my love, where would he get his exercise? It's good for him.

Overall, the book had a good mystery and the usual fun that all the side characters provide. I just wish Eve wasn't always such the super-hero. I'd like to see her really get her ass kicked once in a while. I know, I'm a ray of freaking sunshine. My husband is a lucky lucky man.

This is such a good series and this is one of the best so far. It has all the elements that mark it as a great crime read. A creepy serial killer who has been torturing and killing young women all over the world for nearly ten years and no one has come close to catching him. He started in New York nine years ago and now he is back. Then there is Eve Dallas, a tough, smart, driven detective who will stop at nothing to unearth this killer. A superb team of officers behind her including her partner Peabody who provides a softer side and some of the humour. Her handsome Irish hunk of a husband Roarke with his own network of businesses in the city and special (perhaps not quite legal) skills that can be applied to crime fighting. And a plot that twists and turns as Eve and her team methodically peels back the layers that this killer has been living behind. And finally a great ending!

4.5 stars.

I honestly don't know how JD ROBB keeps writing quality books! None of the books in this series have been less than 4 or 5 stars for me. OK, the formula might be the same but the storyline is original and Eve and Roarke are as interesting as ever.

“There's nobody on the job, nobody with a badge I respect more than you." - Eve

"You never were a rookie," he told her in a voice roughened with emotion. "So I saw good, solid cop the minute I laid eyes on you. I gave you a hell of a foundation, kid, a lot of seasoning and pushed you hard because I knew you could take it. You put yourself here. And I'm proud." - Feeney

If you read the blurb, you know what the story is about. Fast paced with some stressful moments in it. Another winner for me!

Her screams were like music.

“It was hardly a wonder that it had been her, essentially from the first minute he’d seen her. That it would be her until his last breath. And very likely well beyond that.

I don’t think I will ever tire of this series. I don’t see how I can. It is apparent that J.D. Robb really dug deep when she sat and wrote these books because they are pretty amazing.

I love Roarke and Eve. I know this sounds crazy but they seem so real to me. In my head I have given them voices and in my reviews I have given them faces.

He loves her endlessly.

Her love for him leaves her breathless.

I love all the secondary characters. If I am honest, I don’t consider them secondary anymore. They are right up there with R & E. Peabody is my favorite of course. Then you have Feeney, Summerset, McNabb, Whitney, Mira, Morris, Baxter, Nadine and Mavis. I’m sure I have missed someone.

The plot and the mystery surrounding the murders is always intriguing and right through to the last few pages there are twists and turns.

In Creation in Death Eve is brought back to a case that she worked with Feeney about ten years back. He was the lead on the case that went unsolved. This time Eve would be the one controlling the case. The case had both Feeney and Eve on edge.

When the first victim is found it sends a chill through both Eve and Feeney. The killer who slipped through their fingers the last time has returned. His victims would only be the setting for his ultimate goal. Eve and her team is determine to not lose him this time and will do everything necessary to stop him.

I am running out of things to say about this books. You all must be getting tired of hearing I LOVED IT!! But it is true. I’ve loved them all so far. And yes, I have put J.D. Robb up on the proverbial pedestal. Lets hope she doesn’t fall off.

I’ve always said that I love how Roarke loves Eve. In this one we get a lot of the two of them together which is not always the case. I devour the steamy moments they have but my heart melts when they exchange the simplest of word.

“You’re an amazing woman, Lieutenant, my darling Eve.

“You’re not so shabby yourself.

What a despicable serial killer! Really like this book - it has Eve and Roarke working closer than ever before without all the angst.

The only thing about the book that I don't like is the title. I don't get the "Creation" part at all - in my opinion, it should have been called "Groomed in Death" or "Numbers in Death" but that's just me. Do I recommend this book - of course, it's a great part of the series, maybe not integral, but still ...

From the blurb: When the body of a young brunette is found in East River Park, artfully positioned and marked by signs of prolonged and painful torture, Lieutenant Eve Dallas is catapulted back to a case nine years earlier. The city was on edge from a killing spree that took the lives of four women in fifteen days, courtesy of a man the media tagged “The Groom”—because he put silver rings on the fingers of his victims.

Twenty-fifth in the In Death futuristic, romantic suspense series and revolving around Lieutenant Eve Dallas, her family, and her friends in March 2060 in New York City.

My Take
Who says there is no justice in this world . . . even if it is rather grim. That Roarke certainly is a treasure, so very skilled in so many ways, lol. Eve is what we would want all policemen to be remembering the victims and intent on getting the actual bad guy.

Ya gotta love how Dallas and Roarke take care of each other; Galahad’s antics, lol; and, Dallas fear/hatred of emotional anything as well as those awful press conferences *more laughter* I do like how she handles those reporters. As for how ticked off Dallas gets when Roarke is bringing in the dancing girls . . . lol.

Robb uses third person global subjective point-of-view from various perspective: mostly Eve, Roarke, The Groom, various victims.

Those Newkirks are a treasure: observant, forward-thinking, and willing to put in the work.

I do enjoy the humor, whether it’s between Eve and Roarke, Eve and Peabody, amongst the cops . . . it’s all a great stress reliever. Especially as you feel the worry among the cops trying to track down where the victims are kept and tortured.

A maestro in the art of death regretting all the time lost before he found his ouevere. He continues to experiment and times his “guests. He’s the perfect example of a child whose parents didn’t get him help. He’s also a mass of contradictions, finding certain actions distasteful and demeaning to both parties. As for Pella, I’d like to keep him from his meds. What. A. Jerk!
”Something in their eyes . . . brought the hair up on the back of the neck.
The Groom isn’t the only one who tortures; Dallas isn’t bad at it either.

You know, it’s sad that Nadine Furst appears to be the only journalist with integrity, such a rare commodity, especially in IRL.

Between Mira and Dallas, they analyze The Groom down to the bone. Add in the police procedurals and detective work, and its scary and fascinating. What's disgusting is how The Groom thinks, what motivates him.
”A pale man who bears the tree of life and lives by death.
Whew. You read this story, and then take another look at the cover... It will make you quiver. Good read.

The Story
It’s been nine years since a similar series of murders when Detectives Feeney and Dallas worked the case.

Such a considerate serial torture-killer with his oh-so scientific approach.

The Characters
Lieutenant Eve Dallas, annoyingly referred to as “Roarke’s Cop, is the head of Homicide at Cop Central in New York City. Her husband, the incredibly gorgeous and supportive Roarke, is wealthy beyond belief. Summerset is Roarke’s majordomo, his father figure, and the bane of Eve's existence. Galahad is their “starving cat.

Dallas friends include . . .
. . . Nadine Furst is the top on-air personality at Channel 75. Trina now manages the salon section of Bliss, thanks to Roarke, in addition to doing hair at Channel 75.

The New York City Police and Security Department (NYPSD)
Chief Tibble is in charge. Commander Jack Whitney is Dallas superior. Dallas men include Detectives “Horny Dog Baxter, “Baby Face Truehart, “Sick Bastard Jenkinson, Carmichael, and Powell (transferred in from the 6-5 three months ago). Officers include another Carmichael, Harris, and Darnell.

Officer Newkirk was the first on scene in Creation in Death. His father, another cop, Gil Newkirk, was involved in the murders nine years ago; both are out of the one-seven with Lt Groham. Detective Renicki is from Anti-Crime.

Captain Ryan Feeney is the head of the Electronic Detective Division (EDD) he does love the e-work! Sheila Feeney, Feeney’s wife, occupies herself with lots of hobbies, primarily making things. Often unidentifiable things. Detectives Ian McNab (Peabody’s colorful sweetie) and Callendar are Feeney’s e-boys.

Dr Li Morris is the chief medical examiner and a friend of Dallas and Roarke’s. Dick Berenski is the brilliant, yet disgusting chief lab tech. Nine years ago, “Blowharte Harte had been the chief lab tech. Miniki would probably combat hat hair. Detective Yancy is a brilliant police artist. Dr Charlotte Mira is the top profiler in the city and friends with Eve.

Sarafina York is a dancer at the Starlight retro club where Zela Wood is the assistant manager. Loni is another dancer. Brett is the bartender. Clients learning how to dance include Mr Harrow and Ms Yo. Cal is her recently dumped boyfriend the boy was too selfish for words. Bale is a friend of Cal’s. Jaycee York is Sarafina’s sister; her husband, Clint, took their sons to Sedona. Lib is a friend of Jaycee’s.

Gia Rossi is a personal trainer and instructor at BodyWorks, a subsidiary of Health Conscience. Jaymes Riley is her ex-husband. Pi is the manager of BodyWorks. Ariel Greenfield is a baker with ambitions. Erik Pastor is Ari’s neighbor.

Corrine Dagby had been the first of twenty-three all those years ago. Melissa Congress had been a secretary. Anise Waters had been a grad student at Columbia, who had worked at a restaurant owned by Tomas Pella, who had served on the Home Force during the Urbans. Therese Du Veccgui had been his wife, killed while saving lives. Joley Weitz had been an artist and an employee at Arts A Fact.

Stewart E Pierpont had been married to Carmen DeWinter during the Urbans. James Lowell established his funeral home and home in the early 1920s. Robert Lowell was the younger surviving son who took the business over. Robert married Edwina Spring, a young opera sensation, a.k.a. Edwina Roberti. James “Taker Lowell was Robert’s oldest son. Today, Kenneth Travers is the head of operations. Marlee works for Travers.

Tessa Bolvak, a Romany gypsy, hosted a psychic hour on television some years back. Billy is mentally challenged and very protective of his brother, Jerry. They worked for the now-dead Mr Kolbecki. Mr Dobbins is a survivor of the Urban Wars. Hugh Klok is an antiquities dealer. Jessica Forman Rice Abercrombie Charters is the chairman of the board for the opera. Scentual is an exclusive bath supplies shop where Chessie is the manager. áٱ manufactures luxury linens. The Manhattan Family Center has a wing funded by the Lowells, who is represented today by Edward Singer.

The Groom, an opera lover, learned so much from his family.

The Cover and Title
The top two-thirds of the cover is a deep fuchsia with the author’s real name in black with a lighter outline at the top. Behind and covering the entire two-thirds is her pseudonym in red with a note in the same black and yellow noting that Roberts is Robb’s real name. A narrow black band is below the fuchsia, serving as a background for the white with a yellow outline for the title. Below that is a collage of various elements in the story: the monitor, the tea cup, the knife, opera glasses, and the NYPSD in the right background.

The title is more about the creative, as The Groom enjoys experimentation with his Creation in Death.

In Creation In Death, Eve and her colleagues have to deal with a murderer they couldn't catch 9 years before when she was still new to the job and Feeney's partner.
Will he slip out of their hands again, or this time he'll get caught? Since he last operated in New York, many things have changed, and there's another player in the Police team, but the perpetrator has also evolved!
And since he likes to take his next victim before he is done with the previous one, Eve and her team are running against time!
And as the perpetrator is getting closer to Eve, so does she!
Everyone is highwired with nerves running out of proportion as the investigation develops!

I enjoyed that Roarke worked the case from start to finish alongside Eve in this book!

Fast paced with an insight as to how tedious an aspect of the police investigation can be.
Interesting plot with glimpses to what the author calls the Urban Wars in the series.
All the familiar characters at some point make an appearance and are of help to Eve!

Instalment 25 and loving the series!

I'm having a tough time with this one. It is so difficult to imagine a man who puts so much effort into torture and murder. This is not a book I want floating around my head at Christmas, so I paused it until after the holiday. I've finished and it was not one of my favorites in the series. I loved how Eve stopped resisting Roarke working the case alongside of her. They make an awesome team. The motives of the baddie were the central mystery in this book and the race to find him had the entire department working tirelessly.

Nine years ago, when Eve Dallas was a rookie on the force, a serial killer stalked New York. Feeney was the lead, and he chose Eve as his second on the case. They didn't catch him, and he left the area. He's back and nothing is going to stop Eve from catching him this time. He selects his victims, all brunettes and all between 28 and 32, just like before, but he has added a new twist this time around. This time they all work for Roarke. This makes the murders very personal to Eve and Roarke and as they work the case it becomes clear that he intends for Eve to be his final victim. But our Eve is no man's victim, and she fully intends to put this animal in a cage where he belongs.

Suspense 4.5 stars / Romance 4.5 stars

Excellent suspense, the killer is back after 9 years and our Eve caught the asshole. Very painful. Poor victims. I had to pause a couple of times... At least they saved the last one.

Roarke and Eve make a good team. Still pissed at Roarke after the previous book. He was nearly perfect in this one, but I will hold my grudge for a while...

I enjoyed this one but not as much as I have the previous books, it just was not engaging enough for me. Maybe it was because there wasn't a lot of suspects in the first half of the book or the dynamic I have come to expect from Eve and her team was somewhat overshadowed by the manner of the murders committed, it just wasn't the same.

I did thoroughly enjoy the line Eve crossed at the end, Bravo!

Started Out Great

3.5 Stars

This one started out great. Good and creepy. I was expecting a fantastic thriller.
But by about halfway through I realized that wasn't going to happen.
While it was well written, having the bad guy making Eve his 'Ultimate' goal just threw the storyline off in my opinion. Kind of like 'Even serial killers think she's just that awesome '. Though what he wanted with her had nothing to do with sex but still it threw the Thriller part in the trashcan for me.
On the romance side, there was one really nice scene between Roark and Eve and a cute sweet scene that was mostly fade to black between Peabody and McNab.

So this started as a 5 star read but ended up being a 3.5.

Not bad, just didn't hit me right. Probably because it felt like this book was written as a mea culpa of the nonsense that went on in the last book. Also the serial killer books are my least favorite I realize when I do my re-reads.

These books are perfect mix of Castle and Rizzoli & Isles!!! But there’s some reminders about CSI, Criminal Mind Since I love them all, how could I not love Eve and Roarke and Co.!!!???!!!

The greatest skill here is the ability to perfectly mix humor, murder, sweet and hot moments! I never find a dull moment in these books! Every page is a little treasure!

“An event shop. Ah…upscale, everything you might need under one roof. A variety of specialty boutiques—attire, floral and planting, bakery, catering, decor, event planners. It was something I thought of when we were dealing with our wedding. Why go to all these places, all these people, if you can go to one location and find effectively everything you’d need. And if you want something else, there are consultants who’ll find that something else for you.
Eve thought she might actually shop in a place like that. If she fell out of a three-story window, cracked her head on the sidewalk, and suffered severe brain damage. But she said, “Handy.

Yes, Eve, we all know your opinion about shopping! LOL

“Okay. But there go my plans to slip off and meet Pablo the pool boy for an hour of hot, sticky sex.
“We all have to make sacrifices. Myself, I’ve had to reschedule my liaison with Vivien the French maid three times in the last couple of days.
“Blows, Eve said as they slipped into bed.
“She certainly does.

“Or a statement or a reflection. Yours say you’re not only in charge but more than willing to kick ass.
“My pants say I’m in charge? Eve didn’t need Mira’s various degrees to recognize babbling nerves.
“The whole deal. Dark colors, but not somber. Good fabrics, clean lines. Could power things up now and again, strong reds or greens, sharp blues.
“I’ll keep that in mind.
“You should wear sunshades.
“I lose them.
“Well, stop. What are you, twelve? Sunshades would totally complete the package. Is this going to take long? Do you think this is going to take long? What if I can’t do it? What if I get it wrong? What if—
“Stop. What are you, twelve? At Trina’s nervous laugh, Eve stepped off the glide. “It takes as long as it takes. You need to stop, you stop. Yancy’s the best I’ve got, best I’ve worked with. And if you get it wrong we’ll just toss you in a cage for a few hours, until you get it right.

See what I mean? LOL

”He thought of what his wife had said the night before. That he’d railed at Dallas because she was his family. That she’d let him rail because he was her family. Nobody, according to his Sheila, beat each other up as regularly or as thoughtlessly as family.

“Yeah, well, being as they were already dead—hopefully—it probably didn’t upset them too much. Oh, and FYI? When my time comes, I don’t want the preservatives and the stylist. You can just build a big fire, slide me in. Then you can throw yourself on the pyre to show your wild grief and constant devotion.
“I’ll make a note of it.

This installment takes on the famous "the groom" murderer. This killer considers himself a maestro in the art of death. Has tortured and killed twenty three women or was it twenty four? He went out of the loop for nine years and decided to come back to torture and kill some more in New York. And his big mistake is in choosing Eve as his last and would be greatest achievement.

"And to remember I'm not just bait, I'm an experienced and kick-ass cop."

But all those women being tortured and killed? It was hideous and gruesome and inhuman. *shudders*

I've worked with you before, watched, understood to some extent what you do. But I haven't really gone the gamut, as with this time, beginning to end, and most of the steps between. You're an amazing woman, Lieutenant, my darling Eve."

Another enjoyable read.

A killer from Eve’s days as a rookie (working with Feeney) has come back, and he has his sights on Eve.

Feeney and Eve clash in this one big time the case hitting them both hard.

Again, there’s a good blend of humour, murder, emotion and heat.

For him, death was a vocation.

Another great installment of the series. Nine years ago before Eve made detective, she worked with Feeney on a case in which the killer was dubbed "The Groom". A victim with all the same attributes is found and Eve is once again looking for the killer.

I really liked that Roarke was called in on the very beginning of this case and that he spent time at Central where he could truly see Eve work.

The tension between Eve and Feeney now that she is the lead investigator was difficult to read. It was like watching family members have a disagreement. I'm glad they were able to come to terms.

There a lot of excellent police work in this story. It is amazing the information that can be obtained.

I simply cannot get enough of this series. I left work early Friday because I was not feeling well. After a three hour nap I picked up this book and read it straight through.

An excellent series that I highly recommend.

Well done procedural with interesting characters. The story moves toward an ending you think will be predictable, and then our determined detective pulls a twist and saves the day. The stories in this series, the ones I've read so far, have endeared me to the ongoing characters without becoming 'cookie-cutter' tales. Looking forward to reading the next one I have on my shelf.

A serial killer is back in New York city, one who likes to take his victims prisoner and torture them to death. This is a case that really hits home for Eve and Feeny, they both worked the original case nine years ago and the killer is the one who got away who has haunted them ever since. The killer let New York after killing four victims but he continued his work in other cities around the world and nobody has come close to catching him. This time he's made it personal though, he starts by targeting women working for companies owned by Roarke but Eve fits his profile perfectly and it's starting to look like she might be his end game.

I'm running out of ways to express my love for this series so I'm going to keep this review short but that doesn't mean I didn't enjoy Creation in Death. One of the things I love most about this series is the relationship between Eve and Roarke so I was delighted that we see more of the two of them working alongside each other in this one. Eve is so determined to capture the killer that she's pulling in all possible resources and Roarke is more than happy to help since he feels to blame that his people are being targeted. We often see Roarke running smaller side jobs for Eve but this time around he's right in the war room with her and all our other favourites and it gives him a new appreciation for everything the cops do when they're working a difficult case.

Love this series, love this book, can't wait to start reading the next one!

I really enjoyed this installment of the In Death Series. It was fairly typical for the series, and it was a good one. A murder in this one ties back to an old case where a large number of women were killed. Due to that, Eve has extra resolve to solve the case and bring the killer down. Of course, there are ties back to Roarke's businesses, so he uses his expertise to help solve the case.

I really liked how much Roarke helped with the case in this one. It was nice to see he and Eve working together so much. That was my favorite part of this one, and my least favorite part was the friction between Eve and Feeney. I didn't like seeing them at odds.

This one has plenty of Peabody, McNabb, Mavis, and even Nadine. I really enjoyed dialogue in the scene or two where Mavis' baby was present. If you are a fan of this series, this one is sure to please.

A serial killer Eve and Feeny once tried to catch is back, torturing and killing women but this time making it personal as he goes after Roarke's employees.
Dallas puts together a task force and through hard work, lack of sleep, help from others and her team Eve finally catches a break in the case. They've lost some women but were able to save the last victim's life.
I loved this one, the fact that we get a lot of Roarke time was definitely a contributing factor
Eve and Feeny butt heads but things eventually work out, thankfully justice is delivered in the end

Creation in Death by J.D.Robb is the 25th book in the In Death series. A serial killer dubbed The Groom resurfaces in New York after a 9 year absence, and this time Eve Dallas leads the investigation. Another amazing book in the series with Roarke becoming more involved as the new victims are his employees. I cannot get enough of this series.
