Book 3 in this delightful USA Today Best-selling cozy mystery series.
USA Today Best-selling author Ruth Hartzler spends her days writing, walking her dog, and thinking of ways to murder somebody. That's because Ruth writes cozy mysteries and adventures. She is best known for her archaeological adventures, for which she relies upon her former career as a college professor of ancient languages and Biblical history.
Rebecca Yoder, Amish Cupcake Shop owner is being bullied and harassed by Judy Jenkins. Judy claims Rebecca stole her recipe for spiced sour cream cupcakes, when the real truth is that Rebecca has made her recipe of this cupcake for years and its her top seller. Judy threatens Rebecca that if she doesn't immediately stop making and selling her spiced sour cream cupcakes she will bring bad publicity about her shop to all the people she knows. Judy Jenkins has recently written a cupcake recipe book and its a number one seller. She plans a party celebration on the day her book is released. But she never gets to attend her own party because she is found dead before she can make her grand entrance . Rebecca becomes a suspect even though she's not at the party. The Birtwistle sisters and Jane Delight get busy using their sleuthing skills to find the real killer . Turns out that Judy Jenkins wasn't well thought of by those who worked for her or knew her well. There's no shortage of suspects so it's up to Jane, Eleanor and Matilda to find the real killer. Readers are kept guessing until near to the books ending when Mr Crumbles the cat once again wraps things up and brings the real killer to justice. I've read three books into this series so far and I only grow to love these characters more with each book I read. I love the humor that's blended into the mystery and I found myself laughing out loud on more than one occasion. The Birtwistle sisters are a mystery themselves and this keeps me eager to read Book four to find out who these elderly gals really are. Of course the star of the book is really Mr Crumbles the cat. He's always in the center of everything . Readers of Cozy Mysteries and fans of Ruth Hartzler will enjoy this book. You don't have to read these books in order but they are so good you will want to start at book one. I purchased a copy of this book from Amazon. A review wasn't requested. All opinions expressed here are my own.
I enjoyed this book more than the previous two and thought the mystery was interesting. Matilda and Eleanor are fun, but some of their antics are so over-the-top that I didn't find it funny. I'm very interested to know more about their history, since there are so many hints at their past.
CONFECTION IS GOOD FOR THE SOUL by Ruth Hartzler is the third book in the An Amish Cupcake Cozy Mystery series. It鈥檚 the story of Jane Delight and her two sleuthing partners, the Birtwistle sisters, trying to prove Rebecca Yoder鈥檚 innocence in a recent murder. Since Rebecca is Jane鈥檚 identical twin sister, it makes it especially important for them to solve this murder 鈥 and fast.
Judy Jenkins, first time cookbook author, has repeatedly harassed Rebecca claiming she stole her idea of turning Amish cakes into cupcakes 鈥 especially the Amish Sour Cream Cupcake 鈥 even if she鈥檚 been making them for years. When they find out she plans to disclose some harmful, and undoubtedly untrue, information on Rebecca鈥檚 cupcake store at her book launch, Jane, Matilda, and Eleanor decide to go in disguise to hear what it is and see if they can squash that rumor in the bud.
Imagine the surprise and horror when Judy is found dead in the large cupcake 鈥 the one she was to have jump out of at the launch! The suspect list is long including Judy鈥檚 manager - Karen Francis, Judy鈥檚 IT guy 鈥 Brian Birch, and fellow cookbook author 鈥 Selena Starr, and seemingly at the top of the list 鈥 Rebecca Yoder. They all had axe to grind with Judy, but were they worth killing her over? Definitely not Rebecca who is Amish!
Detectives Damon McCloud and Carter Stirling are on the case. Damon鈥檚 interest lean a bit more to the personal side with his worry for Jane鈥檚 safety, which makes Jane blush and her heart to pumping. As good as the detectives are, they just might need a tad of help from three women with questions to ask and people to check out.
Between the murder and working the investigation, Jane gets a call from her lawyer who informs her that the previous lawyer advice she got about coming out of her divorce with nothing wasn鈥檛 on the up and up. Seems she may get enough to start out again on solid footing including a new home and maybe a horse or two. Jane鈥檚 not one to count her chickens before they hatch though.
Is the small out of the way post office where all the poisonous packages were mail part of the puzzle? Was it a crime of passion, greed or revenge? Can the girls come up with the answers to their questions before the police do? And will ever be more than pleasantries between Jane and Damon?
Ruth Hartzler did a wonderful job of adding another great addition to this series when she wrote CONFECTION IS GOOD FOR THE SOUL. Although the third book in this series, this book can definitely be read as a standalone, but believe me you won鈥檛 want to miss the antics, laughs, getting to know Mr. Crumbles, and the puzzle solving from the first two books in the series. There is the thin line through the whole series about the Amish, through one twin sister who is still Amish and one that left the Amish at the age of 16, where you learn some of the words or phrases, some of their values or ways they live, and reasoning behind some of their actions. The cozy mystery part has you loving the main characters pulling for them to solve the case, questioning everyone else while trying to solve the crime only to be carried down so many tracts that you miss the main one until the great reveal which is just the way it should be.
Definitely recommend CONFECTION IS GOOD FOR THE SOUL as well as the whole An Amish Cupcake Cozy Mystery Series!
This is the third book in the Amish Cupcake Mystery series, and once again Jane is in the middle of a murder investigation involving her sister. An unscrupulous self-proclaimed baker/and cook book author (Judy Jenkins) has tried to bully Rebecca into no longer making her Amish sour cream spice cupcakes, with Judy claiming that she was the one to create them and Rebecca stole her idea. However that was completely untrue as everyone around knew Rebecca had been making them for years. Judy was going to open another cupcake bakery in town and put Rebecca out of business. She also was going to teach cooking classes and how to write cookbook classes for $750 per person. Never mind that she had only one e-book cookbook planned, and had pre-sold it for a extremely low price while spending thousands of dollars to make it look like a #1 best seller. Judy was a most unpleasant and dishonest person. When it was discovered she was murdered at her book launch, there was very little sadness at her passing. Matilda, Eleanor, Mr. Crumbles, and Jane soon found themselves trying to keep Rebecca from being accused of Judy's murder.
I love the reoccurring characters of family and friends that includes the mother of a young woman who is a source for information about autopsies and causes of death. It also includes the relatively new detective who is Scottish and has his eye on Jane. While the murder investigation is the main thrust of the book, side stories include Matilda and Eleanor's bad adopted goats (living at Rebecca's farm and causing havoc there), money that Jane's ex-husband is trying to keep from Jane, training Mr. Crumbles to walk on a leash, and of course that spark of romantic interest between the detective and Jane.
This is a fun series with all sorts of things I feel are yet to be revealed. I know if I could ask Ruth one question, I would want to know what Matilda and Eleanor's background is. They are such a mystery in themselves. I have to say the amaze me at the different topics about which they are apparently experts as well as their funny ideas of how things should be done.
I live near an Amish community, and when I go there, I have to look at these salt-of-the-earth people and wonder if they are anything like the Amish in this series by Ruth Hartzler. Maybe I should be looking for a cupcake shop and get to know the owner. My recommendation for you is to read the series in order and sit back and enjoy the escape into another world. Good for all ages. Don't miss this book and series!
Rebecca has been accused of stealing an original recipe by a cookbook author. Except the Amish Spice cupcake is one that Rebecca has been selling in her shop for years.
Since she threatened Rebecca to stop selling the cupcake or she would "reveal" something about Rebecca at her book launch, Jane and her roommates go under cover. But the only thing unveiled at the cookbook launch is a dead body. Of the author!
And Jane is once again the reluctant associate of Matilda & Eleanor Investigations!
What ensues is another frenzied round of visits, questions, and yummy Amish food being shared. I love these characters and the way they always seem able to embroil Jane in their cloak and dagger shenanigans!
Hartzler has once again penned a humorous adventure, complete with disguises and stake outs. A great addition to this series, I'm am looking forward to reading the next entry! I happily recommend this series!
[Many thanks to the author for the opportunity to read a copy of this book. I was not required to write a review. This is my honest review, the opinions expressed herein are entirely my own. ]
This is the third book in the Amish Cupcake series. Jane Delight is home living above her Amish sister鈥檚 cupcake shop. She is in reduced circumstances due to her husband dumping her and marrying someone very young.
Jane shares the apartment with seniors, Mathilda and Eleanor. The sisters have an unusual past and they are keeping the past in the past. Still, they have some unusual skill sets which come in handy when the ladies investigate murders.
This happens somewhat frequently. This time, a mean-spirited cookbook author is murdered and Jane鈥檚 sister, Rebecca, is under suspicion. Jane, Mathilda, Eleanor and their cat, Mr. Crumbles, are on the case.
It turns out the murdered woman had a plethora of individuals unhappy even with her to has resorted to killing her. The question is, who had the most to gain? Who is getting away with it while Rebecca is takes the blame?
I鈥檓 looking forward to reading the next book in this series. I鈥檓 hoping a tad bit more is unveiled about the sisters past.
Confection Is Good For The Soul is the third suspense filled story written by Ruth Hartzler in her An Amish Cupcake Cozy Mystery series. I absolutely love the characters the author has developed to tell her story. I love that you never know what Matilda and Eleanor are going to do or say. They really add a lot to the story with all their quirkiness.
Once again Rebecca finds herself at the center of a murder. Enter Jane, Matilda, and Eleanor to the rescue. I love the knowledge these ladies have and how they sneak around and sluth behind the cops backs. The author has done an amazing job adding references to Agatha Christie books throughout the story. With so many suspects it keeps the reader trying to solve this crime. Mr. Crumbles is once again creating havoc through his antics but you can't help but love him. I also love the recipes at the end of the book.
I was not given a complimentary copy of this book to read and review. I have rated this book with five stars for meeting my expectations of a wonderful story that I can highly recommend to others. I was not approached by anyone to post a favorable review.
Congratulations to Ruth Hartzler for writing another exceptional story for her readers enjoyment and I hope there will be another story in this series but I am not sure. I will be watching.
A good read. Okay not the best but a plot that is well thought out but somehow is just felt a bit chaotic when I was reading it. Possibly just me. Plus the humour that attempted to get through just failed to materialise. The characters though have gotten better although I wish our heroine had a bit more get up and go. Her sister though is getting stronger and the two elderly sleuths plus Mr Crumbles are a delight. In a haphazard, chaotic fashion. A newcomer to town has been trying to stop her sister from selling cupcakes, that she has made for years, saying that she invented the recipe and she makes a point of saying that she will be outing her at her book launch. When the disagreeable woman is found dead in a mock cupcake at the launch suspicion falls on her sister. But other suspects become apparent as she and her two elderly roomies investigate. Who however had the banned poison? Why were gifts being sent to the dead woman? Will they find the killer before they strike again? What can Mr Crumbles do? Will she get any money from her divorce?
Excellent cozy murder mystery filled with quirky characters and great detective work. This is the third edition of the the well crafted 鈥淎mish Cupcake Mystery series鈥. The characters are chalked fulled of mystery and personality that quickly engage you in the story. The storyline flows smoothly and quickly. The narrative provides a glimpse into the Amish lifestyle and the heroine鈥檚 thoughts, emotions, reasoning and actions. The mystery was interesting with multiple suspects, lots of relevant clues, surprises and suspense. I enjoyed how the lives of characters progress and develop throughout the series. The dialogue is witty and compelling and the character interaction humorous, romantic and explorative. If you like cozy mysteries with a furry character you will enjoy this series.
Judy Jenkins, part-time cupcake book author and full-time bully, is dead . . . but why do the police suspect Jane's sweet Amish sister, Rebecca? When Rebecca is accused of murder -- all over Amish Sour Cream Spice cupcakes -- it鈥檚 the start of another thrilling mystery for Jane Delight. Jane is eager to clear Rebecca's name, but with brooding Detective Damon McCloud wanting to whisk her away from the suspects, she鈥檚 in for the adventure of a lifetime. [amazon synopsis]
Can Matilda and Eleanor help Jane prove her sister did not kill Judy? The older women are a bit much at times. If they could just get rid of the stupid cat, Mr. Crumbles I would like the series much better. A good mystery otherwise.
When Judy Jenkins winds up dead after accusing Rebecca of stealing her ideas. Rebecca winds up as one of the main suspects. Jane Delight, Rebecca's sister, and her two octogenarian room-mate sisters are on the case. They uncover a history of Judy's accusing others, and even paying to sabotage them and their careers. Detective Damon is still trying to keep Jane from investigating murder cases as she has been in danger the last two times.
Another fun story with lots of suspects, plenty of snacks, and two older ladies who have a background that's just waiting to be told. (Impatiently waiting!)
Confection is Good for the Soul is the third book in the An Amish Cupcake Cozy Mystery by Ruth Hartzler. This is a very quick and delightful read. It can be read as a standalone but I suggest you read the first two to get some background. I have read the first two and this one doesn鈥檛 disappoint. I love meeting up with all the characters and the shenanigans again. There are plenty of twists and turns and suspects to keep you guessing. You may not want to bring this book to work to read because you will definitely be laughing out loud. This is a fun series and I can鈥檛 wait to see what Ruth has in store for us next. I can鈥檛 wait for the next book.
Another good entry in this series! This time, Jane's sister Rebecca, is a suspect in the murder of Judy, nasty woman who accused Rebecca of stealing her cupcake recipe, even though Rebecca has been making them for years. There are plenty of suspects, and red herrings to throw the reader off track. With the somewhat dubious help of Matilda and Eleanor, Jane's octogenarian room mates who are more than they seem, Mr. Crumbles the cat, and some wild goats, things get downright frantic for a while. I'm looking forward to reading the next one in the series, to find out what this crew is up to next!
We're back in Amish country with Jane Delight (who left years ago and is recently divorced), her twin sister Rebecca (who is married and adherent), and Jane's roommates Eleanor and Matilda plus their very interesting cat. A rather nasty author comes to town to plug her new cookbook and make trouble for Rebecca. So when the harpy is found murdered, Rebecca is one of the suspects. The mystery itself is well done, but it's all the fun that kept my attention from beginning to end! No spoilers, just expect to laugh yourself silly!
Confection is Good for the soul. Book 3. Amish Cupcake Cozy Mystery Series.
This series keeps getting better and better and it kept me guessing whom the murderer was until the very end.
Judy Jenkins, is being named as a bully and she's found dead inside a huge cake- Jane's Amish sister, Rebecca is considered a suspect because Judy accused Rebecca of stealing the idea of Amish Sour Cream Spice cupcakes - which Rebecca used to sell since years ago. Jane, her roommates and Mr. Crumbles get to the bottom of the case and Jane and Mr Crumbles save the day and find the killer.
In Confection is Good for the Soul you can reunite with this delightful cast of recurring characters. (But this works well as a stand alone book also.) This series is amazing. There is always a puzzling murder, tons of suspects, many motives and lots of plot twists. I usually do not guess the murderer. There is also a slight hint romance between Jane and Detective Damon McCloud. Don't miss this entertaining mystery.
Confection is Good for the Soul is Book 3 in the Amish Cupcake Cozy Mystery Series. I have really come to LOVE this series.
This is a great read. It is the third book and does stand alone, but if I were you I would read the first two FANTASTIC books in this series to get some back story.
I laughed out loud as some parts and there are twists to keep you guessing to the last page.
This is very well written mystery with great characters. I am excited for the next book in the series.
Judy Jenkins author accuses Rebecca cupcake baker of stealing Judy鈥檚 recipe for sour cream cupcakes. Rebecca has been baking these for years. Rebecca being Amish seems never to be too perturbed; however, Jane is worried and when Judy is found dead, she knows Rebecca is the prime suspect. Jane and her 2 cohorts set off the find the murderer.
This is another enjoyable mystery from Ruth Hartzler. I can鈥檛 wait for the next.
I love this series because the main character is actually a woman in her 50s like I am! This was a big bonus because the sleuths are usually in their 30s (or so, I find). The only drawback are spoilers for Agatha Christi books. I am not currently reading any, so I won't remember what was in the books. other than that, I loved how the stories unfolded and that I could relate to the main character (in age, anyway)!
As always each book in this series is truly delightful! I've enjoyed each one immensely. Although would like to see Mr. Crumbles get a little more story time. He's so funny!! I love Matilda and Eleanor. They're so feisty!!! Really loved this story line! Am looking forward to the next in the series and all that are to come!
As always Matilda and Eleanor go into sleuthing mode after a woman is murdered who was accusing Jane's sister Rebecca of stealing her recipies. Jane of course against detective Damon's wishes, helps the sisters to find the killer before her sister can be charged. As always I can't wait for the next book!
Poor Jane! Living with Matilda and Eleanor must be trying for her, but hilarious for us! Great heroines, storylines and settings! Love learning about the Amish traditions. Would recommend to anyone who likes fun, intrigue and a little romance!
I enjoy the antics of the characters in this book! Matilda and Eleanor are amusing. Mr. Crumbles is spoiled and a perfect fit for these two ladies. I would enjoy seeing a relationship develop between Jane and the detective.
A Very good story. Characters likeable, strong, warm, loyal and some are very eccentric. It"s fun to read about the Amish.and some of their customs. Plot flowed well and kept me engaged. Satisfying ending.
This is another five-star book by this author. I've read books in two different series she's written and I'm not sure which series I love more. This series follows Jane, a recently-divorced fiftyish woman, who lives with two octogenarian roommates and their cat. When people are murdered in the small town where they live, they get into trouble with the local and handsome detective by investigating them. I have grown to love these characters and look forward to their next adventure.
Jane, Matilda, & Elenanor are at the scene of another murder by poison. The detectives are once again suspicious of Rebecca. Join Jane, the girls and Mr. Crumbles for another great story full of twist and turns. The author will keep you guessing and laughing until the end.
