Sweet Black Waves and Wild Savage Stars are two of my favorite YA fantasy books of all time. Both were incredible reads for me, full of magic, romance, and heartbreak. I was very impatient to read Bright Raven Skies so I could find out the ending to Branwen's story and was SO grateful when I had the chance to read it early!

Bright Raven Skies picks up immediately after Wild Savage Stars, with Eseult and Tristan missing, and Branwen angry at them both. Despite her part in their betrayal, Branwen is unable to forgive. Still, she owes it to her aunt to keep Eseult and the alliance between the kingdoms in tact and, as usual, puts others above herself. Usually I get fed up with characters who constantly self-sacrifice, but my love for Branwen is undying. Her love for her family and country is hard not to root for and I read this wanting nothing more than a happy ending for her after so much heartbreak.

There was a lot to wrap up in this trilogy and I think Bright Raven Skies did a good job of it, although there were things I would have liked to end differently. Knowing the original tale of Tristan and Eseult, I knew some of what to expect, but this still managed to fall a little short. My main issue was that a lot of the book was overly drawn out. The political aspects of the story overtook the relationships and the plot went to several places I didn't care much about. There was an entire side plot that seemed to come out of nowhere and took up a huge chunk of the story.

Despite all that, I still enjoyed this finale! I loved the relationship between Branwen and Eseult and even found myself loving Tristan again by the end. There was so much done right about this trilogy, I just wish the final installment had packed a bit more punch. If you like tragic love stories and want a YA fantasy that's a little different, I still definitely recommend giving this series a try!

Actual rating: 3.5 stars

How am I expected to wait another year for this?

Sweet Black Waves is my favorite underrated YA fantasy trilogy. I wish more people read and talked about it. I loved the first two books and was eagerly awaiting the conclusion, especially after the dramatic ending of book two! Bright Raven Skies did not disappoint. Everything about this book and the trilogy is top-notch: the prose, the worldbuilding, the characters, and their tangled relationships! I am taking one star off because, in my opinion, the author was quite cruel to some of my favorite characters. She was not afraid to hurt them or make them make dumb choices! Regardless, I loved this book, and this trilogy is going on my favorites shelf. If you are looking for a historical fantasy to knock your socks off, Sweet Black Waves is it!

"Bright Raven Skies led me back to you."

I'm not ok guys.

This book really tears your heart out and steps on it.

Around half way through Bright Raven Skies, I was a inconsolable sobbing mess until the very end.

I enjoyed this series more than I expected. I started it because I read a few reviews about Sweet Black Waves being tragic, and I wanted a good book to cry, too. While the first two books (although really good) fell short on that area for me, Bright Raven Skies made up for that by tearing at all your heart strings.

"Dreams were never enough, but they were all Branwen would ever have."

Tristen's and Branwen's love was very fast paced in the first book, but the undeniable love that just oozed from both of them made you keep rooting for their happy ever after. Despite all the impossible obstacles they faced. While I loved Ruan and loved the man Branwen brought out of him, Tristen had my heart first, and I mean, how can someone NOT fall for his beautifully poetic words.

*Thoughts*

Bright Raven Skies is the third and final installment in author Kristina Pérez's Sweet Black Waves series. This is a story inspired by Tristan and Iseult but created in the author’s own unique way. It is a world is inspired by medieval Ireland (Iveriu), Cornwall (Kernyv) and Brittany (Armorica). It has been one year since Branwen saved Tristan's life after his ship was allegedly attacked by pirates. It has been 14 years since her parents were murdered by Tristan's people who had been invading and stealing people away. But now all she wants is peace between Iveriu and Kernyv.

My soul is shattered.

My heart is broken.

For I love and I hate.

IM SOBBING OKAY! I need to be dramatic but what the hell with that ending?! That’s not okay. I’m not okay.

I can’t form thoughts because my heart was ripped out a lot and I can’t breathe because I’m crying too hard. Just when you thought you couldn’t be hurt more... there is another piece of your heart that this book breaks.

I received an Advance Reader Copy from the publisher, via NetGalley. This in no way impacted on my view.

Following the ambush of the Kernyv Castle by the Amorican's, Branwen is struggling to come to terms with her new found magic, and her looming deadline to kill before a year is out, or forfeit the souls of those she loves. Also, her cousin, True Queen Eseult, and Prince Tristan, are missing, presumed abducted, but both she and her lover, Prince Ruan, know the truth. Branwen has so many different trials and tribulations to overcome, and there are powers looming - both mortal and godly - out to stop her.

From the moment I started this book, I was hooked, but so much happened. I was expecting to have it finished in a day or so, but because of how much Kristina packed into the story, it took a little longer. Bright Raven Skies is split into 3 different parts, and each one felt like their own book. Finding and recovering both Eseult and Tristan, and protecting them from the calls of treason and adultery, took a large role in part one, with Branwen being torn over protecting her cousin - who she thought had planned to kill her - or letting her be torn apart by the powers that be in court. Everything Branwen did or was about, in all three books, was to protect the peace that had appeared between Iveriu and Kernyv, and later with the Amoricans, so she couldn't let Eseult be labelled an adulterer, even if it was true. Then we get to an even greater plot within the Kernyv royal court, with politics and intrigue being the name of the game, and I loved part 2 the most. This part was so engaging, and though it was about half of the book, it felt like it was over in a flash. A lot happened, though, some of which I wasn't too pleased about, but I simply loved it. The final part of the book was so heartbreaking, with Branwen breaking herself apart to fight the dark magic, and all the various plot lines and twists finally drawing together to a nice, neat ending, with everything tied up, and nothing left to chance.

Branwen will always be my favourite character, and this book cemented this even more. I felt for her so much with how she suffered throughout the book, in numerous different ways, but she showed how strong and brave she was, again and again. Also, I loved Ruan still, and though I wasn't overly keen with how his character arc turned out, it wasn't out of character, not really, and him and Branwen had happy moments together. Eseult, even, redeemed herself somewhat in this book, especially by the end, but her actions in previous books mean I can't completely forgive her. Same with Tristan, but again, his character arc came full circle. Like I said, this book completely tied up everything, and it was the perfect ending to the series anyone could've asked for. A fantastic retelling of the Tristan and Isolde myth!

Its no secret that I've loved this series from the start, and in this finale Perez triumphantly gives it the conclusion it deserves - though, of course, it won't be the ending every reader wants! How brilliantly this trilogy has blended the rich, lush evocation of its world, the surging heady romance, and the politicking, both worldly and otherworldly. And each element is beautifully tied up here.

Perez gets so much drama out of a small cast of characters, and by this stage you know them all intimately. So when it's time for one or another to step off the stage, you really feel their loss. Yet there's even the skilful introduction of a few new characters. One in particular, a feisty Armorican princess, deserves a spinoff series of her own.

Yes, I'm one of the readers whose favourite character didn't get what I wanted for them. And I won't be the last! But even though BRIGHT RAVEN SKIES is - almost certainly - going to break your heart, you won't regret a moment of it.

The Sweet Black Waves Trilogy is not an easy series. Especially if you know that its retelling of Tristan and Iseult. Its not a happy story. But its not terrible either.

KK Perez has taken this tragedy, and made it a beautiful story of loss, and what happens when you focus on hope.

Truly, this series is one of the most heart wrenching, tear jerking series I have ever read. But it is beyond beautiful, and full of such life and magic.

This was a wonderful end, to a wonderful series. I can say its one of those books, that after reading your life will never be the same.

1-1/2 stars? I don't know, I pretty much seriously disliked this.

book throwing gif

After the way Wild Savage Stars ended, I was hoping for something else. I don't want to give away anything that happened here, but basically, this book starts off right after the end of book two, with Tristan and Eseult missing and all hell has broken loose.

There's beautiful writing and drama and intrigue and fighting and all the things we've come to expect from Kristina Pérez. The beginning, though it had some exciting story, kind of drug along for me. There's a tiny bit of swoon, but for me it came too little, too late. Don't get me wrong, I don't need a story as action-packed as this one to be all about the romance. But heart and loyalty were the driving force for me throughout the first two books in the series, and both were lacking here. Or maybe it was just that Branwen seemed to be so different here. Branwen's sole objective throughout the series has been to protect her cousin, the true Queen, but here, she seems to not care about that. And poor Tristan! Like I said, I don't want to give too much of the story away, but things happen to bring it to .

Now that I'm collecting my thoughts to write this review, did the original Tristan and Isolde have such a great, inspiring love story? Or was it all Brangäne? 🤔 I don't know. Regardless, I hated what this Branwen did to this Tristan, and by extension to this Eseult and King Marc. I still love Tristan.
quoteDo not believe this life is what I wished. Tristan dashed his eyes toward Branwen; the hazel flecks were so many falling stars. A thousand years, sealed with a kiss.

I can’t

I died.

Ah, and what happens with Ruan. 😭😭😭
quote"Iveriu isn't my home." Ruan lifted his gaze from the knige to Branwen's eyes. "I once thought it might be you."

After all the angst and heartwrenching drama, I thought this story could turn out okay, even though throughout book two and especially this book, I had come to abhor Branwen, but no. It didn't.

Still, Tristan stayed true--and filled me with all the feelings.
quote"Your magic is your heart," said Tristan, sliding her had from his cheek, down his neck, and resting it above the love-knots Branwen stitched when things were simpler. ... "The greatest joy in my life is that you entrusted it to me, for a little while."

The ending killed me. And made me mad. And confused. It's tragic, and it could have been hopeful for everyone. This series is drama and super angst filled, and I'm so glad I could read it all straight through. Now the entire series is out and you could read it all at once, if you want to. Personally, I wish I hadn't. Or that I had stopped at the end of the first book. 🤷‍♀

What a great story. BRIGHT RAVEN SKIES is filled with magic and intrigue. Brawnen isn’t a powerful, relatable character. Tristan and Eseult were another pair of interesting characters. I found them all so dynamic and personable. I saw their faults. Their desires. The plot points were so well done. What a fantastic story! My attention was held the entire time.

What a fantastic conclusion. This was an open ended type of conclusion which I really enjoy when done well. Not everything in life is so neat that it fits in a box. This book does have an ending but you can decide for yourself where it goes from there. Kristina Perez has left me an emotional wreck through this trilogy and while this third book had some cry worthy moments I did not cry this time. I was kind of glad it was not punch in the gut wrenching this time. I was able to absorb my feelings quicker than the other two books. If you enjoy the unexpected and want a book that has intrigue, character development, twists and turns, action and magic then you need to read this series.

This book was amazing. I loved the first to books as well. It was just so heartbreaking and beautiful. I really understood Branwen, and she was a very meaningful character. Bright Raven Skies was about love, loss, pain, and rage, but also about hope and rediscovering yourself. Branwen's character arc of starting out as the dutiful cousin, losing herself to the darkness inside her, and then finding herself again was stunning. This series was gorgeously written and it's message of hope really came through to me. This book will forever be among my favorites.

I’m so torn about the rating of this book.
On one hand, the writing was better. I still enjoyed the main character. The series still held my interest.
On the other hand, can the last 100 or so pages be rewritten? I cannot remember the last time I wanted a different ending so badly. I don’t want to criticize the writer because she did what she thought was best for her story that she was telling. I just (dis)respectfully disagreed.

She decided to throw Ruan under the bus. Was he amazing? No. Did he have his moments? Yes. Did he serve his purpose? Yes. Was he a good fit for Branwen? Arguably in the second book, yes, but in the third, apparently not.

Then we have Tristan because apparently we can’t get over him? He made me swoon in the first book. I was torn in the second book. In the third book, I was, like, “boy, bye. Sorry you were under a love potion, but stop fuc—messing up your life. He was redeeming himself and learning from his mistakes by marrying Alba, and then nope? Never mind. He’s going to turn his back on Marc because he feels like it.

In the beginning, Alba is a captain of a ship, who loves her family and will never marry. Then that all changes...? I wanted to see a bit more teeth, especially when she came in so hot. So she decided to marry Tristan because her dad said so and she’s says, “Ok, let me give up my hopes and dreams and call of the sea to marry a prince that loves another women and while having sex with her cousin? Sure. Sounds like a great time.

I have to touch on Euselt (because when don’t I?). I still hate her. It’s nice she has this redemption arc where she finally realizes it’s not all about her. We come into this story with Tristan and her having run off. (Best first 100 pages was because Euselt wasn’t there.) It turns out that Euselt was running away and Tristan went after her or something like that. (I don’t remember the actual reason, but I remember my reaction to the end of the second book which was a big “Fuck you to Euselt.) The rumors come out, blah. Do I think Euselt deserved to die because she wanted true love? No, and she didn’t die. (Was I okay if she died? Absolutely.) So she gets her redemption arc, and instead of doing her duty, she runs off to be free. This is framed as a feminist woman making her own choices. (Technically yes.) Does it piss me off? Yes. How about she faces her consequences and becomes a queen? How about she fulfills all the promises, such as the hospital? How about she makes feminist badass choices while being queen (and Branwen doesn’t have to clean up her mess)?

Really, this series is a bunch of people making bad choices and Branwen cleaning them up.This is my opinion. Don’t @ me.

So Euselt is “dead. Branwen brings Tristan back from the dead.
Honestly, the magic was cool but underused and maybe lacking in explanation and dot-connecting. (I mean a lot of things jokingly not this.) I’m one of those people where it’s all magic or no magic. It could’ve gone either way with this series. The fact that she’s gods-touched leaves a lot to be explored, and Branwen has a lot to explore. But she can’t do it because she’s too busy fixing other people’s issues. (Don’t @ me.)

Back to what I was saying, Branwen brings Tristan back from the dead because Ruan came and tried to kill him (all off screen) (and because Ruan needed to be further shoved under the bus). And then the author is, like, you’ve waited three books (I don’t remember them doing it before), “now you can read them fuck each other. Here you go? Does this make you happy? I’m sure someone’s happy, but it isn’t me.

Tristan escapes you instead of doing his job and staying married to Alba. Branwen goes back to the... the place. (I could never remember what country was supposed to be what country.) Branwen doesn’t become queen. She didn’t want to become queen didn’t even want to be a duchess so the author stayed true. But it doesn’t mean I liked it. Because what is Branwen going to do now (that she’s not cleaning up messes)? She doesn’t seem like a character, to me, who can ride off into the sunset. If anyone should’ve “died and ran or actually D-I-E-D, then it should’ve been Branwen.

After writing this, I don’t feel so bad about the ending. I’ve calmed a bit. (I’ll rage more later; it’s late right now. I’ve got work in the morning.) I still don’t know the rating I want to give. It was a good series, and it was good up to this point. The evil part of me just wants to go 1/5 stars based solely on the ending not meeting my expectations. My devoted reading self who will enjoy and rage these books until I die wants to give it 4/5. (I can’t give a 5/5 because I can’t actually achieve sustained happiness.) Middle it is.

Bright Raven Skies, the epic conclusion to Kristina Perez's Sweet Black Waves series, does not disappoint! Carefully constructed narratives braid beautifully with raw emotion in a world that is complex, imperfect and unapologetically hopeful. Perez lays bare the wants and intentions of her characters and expertly weaves Branwen and company's stories into a rich tapestry. Bright Raven Skies is a not-to-miss finale!

Readers are immediately transported into Branwen's tangled web of lies, tenuous relationships and mistakes. After the siege on King Marc's kingdom, Eseult and Tristan are found to be missing and Branwen fears the worst -- that the two loves have fled -- and begins the search to find and protect her cousin and her true love. However, finding the queen and her champion will be the least of Branwen's problems -- her powers are turning dark and she soon realizes the price for peace is even greater than she first expected.

𝘐𝘯 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘮𝘺 𝘥𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘩, 𝘪𝘯 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘮𝘺 𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘦

Took my time to finish this book and it seems that I only delayed the pain, because it still hit just as hard the second time 😭

I need to talk about my man first—Tristan. Oh, he’s selfless and has the noblest heart. I love how he stays true to his duty to his king and kingdom.

𝑷𝒆𝒂𝒄𝒆 𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒗𝒆 𝒂𝒍𝒍

I literally 𝘤𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘥 when he vowed this to his king. He and Branwen have always dreamed of seeing their kingdoms united, and it’s absolutely heartbreaking that he has to sacrifice everything he loves for that dream. His love and trust in Branwen run so deep that he’s even willing to sacrifice himself for her just so she doesn't have to bear the consequences of her bargain alone 😭

And Branwen—despite her godly power—is far from perfect. She fears losing herself and carries immense guilt for using dark magic, even though she only does so to protect the fragile peace their kingdoms have barely achieved. Watching her spiral when she thought the Old Ones had abandoned her, letting fear and guilt cloud her judgment, was devastating. She’s too hard on herself, and I just wish she would allow herself to embrace all the love from the people around her 🫂

I also love Eseult’s character development in this book—when she finally steps into her role as a true queen and tries to build a relationship with King Marc. Even though he’s unable to return her affection, her efforts were both inspiring and heartbreaking. I wouldn’t blame her for her final selfish request when she believed she had fulfilled her role in maintaining peace. She finally found what she loved the most and was willing to risk everything for it.

And just when I finally started to like Ruan a little—because of his unconditional love for Branwen and his family—he had to go and take the wrong path out of resentment toward Tristan, making me despise him all over again. MY MAN HAS SUFFERED ENOUGH!! 😭

The reunion between Tristan and Branwen had me swooning all over again, to the point thst I almost forgot all the pain I felt reading this book. My man literally changed the verse of his serenade just to reassure Branwen that she’s still beautiful, even with her appearance altered by the magic. 𝘛𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯, 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘢𝘯 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘢𝘳𝘦 🫵🏻😭💗

"Bright Raven Skies led me back to you."

Bright Raven Skies is nothing short of amazing and tragic. It was filled and brimming with emotions. Branwen is a rare gem and I put her up there with characters like Vasya from The Winternight trilogy. Quiet, strong, determined and loyal. Her journey was never an easy one and at times I was just over it and frustrated. I just wanted her to stop thinking about the rest of the world, the kingdom, peace and think of herself. I was happy that she did find some joy and comfort in Ruan, but I have never wished or wanted so badly for a true happily ever after in a story than this one.

Like the first two books, the magic and world building is incredible. You can tell the world is inspired by medieval Ireland, Cornwall and I think Armorica is Roman? This world is beautifully descriptive, atmospheric and melancholy. Magic is dangerous and finicky and that's exactly what I got in this series. It requires understanding, connection and balance. As the series progressed, I have come to understand the magic of the Lands, and Branwen's lack of understanding and abuse has imposed some serious dangers and consequences. Throughout, Branwen's despair, pain, and frustration were palpable. I couldn't help but wonder if she would come out of this broken or intact. Also, what an amazing cast of characters and the turn of the events that happened, it kept me on the edge of my seat and turning the pages. I even loved Branwen's relationship with Princess Alba. I thought the story wrapped up Essy, Tristan, King Marc and Ruan's storylines well enough and the future of the 3 kingdoms seem hopeful.

But can I be honest and say that when Branwen travels to Armorica, and the event that unfolded there broke my heart! Like it can never be pieced or stitched together. I didn't like it and yes I'm throwing an Essy fit. I guess the conclusion is befitting for a tragic love story, but I just can't accept it and as reader I can always use a little imagination and dream of what could have been.

The Sweet Black Waves trilogy is a beautiful lush world, a tragic love story with magic, betrayal, love and forgiveness. I highly recommend in to those that love historical fantasy and tragic love stories or movies such as The Titanic, Atonement and throw in some Shakespeare flair.

"Odai eti ama" I hate and I love.

"I did not ask for the love I was given; the love for which I must be forgiven"

Beautiful end to a remarkable series !
I made it my point to slow my reading when getting towards the last few chapters. This series was just unpredictable. I wasn't prepared to end the book in more devastation (cos mind you, it was just heartbreak after heartbreak)

On the contrary, lets just acknowledge how glad we were when Branwen and Tristan FINALLY did the deed 😏 they both deserved that for themselves and the sacrifices they made (Right?!)
~"In you my death, in you my life." ❤💔❤💔

The fact that this triology personified different attributes of woman in their different characters was also amazing. We had the free spirited Eseult who was determined to have things done her way. Quite obnoxious and troublesome at times but her affection for Branwen was genuine.

Alba, another strong lead, who preferred being a captain then a princess, her fearless appetite for adventure was definitely unmatched.

Then we had Endelyn, who was introduced as a bratty royal but whose story slowly unfolded. Her ending was quite sad as i hoped she would've experienced some romance for herself. But I guess the love she experienced from her brother was enough. Especially when he avenged her death. Dramatically sad but beautifully paced !

Oh, Countess Kensa ! What a woman, what a mother! Her character showed the strength of a woman when she is cornered and left with no options. Also, the lengths a mother would take to protect her children and their future.
~“Gods—if they do
exist—do not care about us. We must help ourselves. Especially us women"

~"Don’t fool yourself that your
ambition is any less great than mine, Duchess. We merely desire different
things..."

And of course, the beloved and selfless: Lady Branwen of Castle Bodwa who was also bestowed many titles such as: Branwen of Iveriu / Duchess Branwen of Lioness but best of all Healer Branwen 🍃🔮. Her character was humbling in so many ways. I was in awe of her strength. Her courage to stay the path and choose peace above all, brought tears to my eyes. Though she was orphaned so early in her life, she rose above the bitterness and chose to forgive. She didn't let her circumstances define who she was or what she would make of herself and this I believe, is a very important takeaway that most readers can cling to.

We don't forget the power houses who also inspired their enigena's journey: Queen Eseult, Beloved Lady Alana, Beloved Queen Verica & not forgetting Ailleann, the Wise Damsel

Thank you Kristina for this novel !
I'm more then certain that kingdoms were not forged only by war but by painful sacrifices that women at the helm would make to ensure alliances.

“Why is it that sailors insist ships are women, Captain? she said.
“Because they’re stronger and more stalwart than men.

Indeed we are 💋

I picked this trilogy finale up in the evening and couldn't put it down until I'd finished it. It was such an engaging read, pitting characters against one another in their desperate desire for peace/to be right/to define their own lives.

It's hard to say much about this book without spoilers for it and the trilogy, but I loved that the war between the countries and who was manipulating it behind the scenes remained the focus, and that the retelling of the star-crossed lovers was more a complication and emotional strain on top that was causing all sorts of characters to react and make the situation much worse.

I was crying by the end. As expected, Kristina Pérez absolutely ran my heart through a wrangle with this book. Ruan, Tristan, Esuelt. This book took so many turns I wasn't expecting, forcing Branwen to make more brutal choices to save her home.

I loved the way that the ending for Tristan and Esuelt was handled. It's a tale of star-crossed lovers, so naturally it won't end well. However, as the toxic relationships started to break down and the characters healed, I wasn't sure how the ending would go. Then I hit the final act and IT WAS AMAZING. Esuelt's choices in that last act was brilliant, as was the way Tristan and Branwen finished their relationship arc. It was bittersweet and hopeful all at once - perfect for the tone of the story.

Her growth with her relationships was so brilliant. She has five major relationships in the book - Tristan, Eseult, Ruan, Marc, and Andred. With the exception of her relationship with Marc, they're all so humanly messy and complex. In contrast, Marc and Branwen are a brilliant brother/sister pair, and it was a nice ray of hope among the brokenness. Not to mention brilliant to see a man and a woman able to be really supportive loving friends without any hint of romance.

I'm rather sad that this trilogy has come to an end, definitely a favourite of mine, but it means I can look forwards to something new from Kristina Pérez soon - hopefully.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for the free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. My opinion was not affected by the free copy.

I have enjoyed this series so much more than I expected, but I'm sorry to say that the final installment has fallen a little short for me. The two things that I have loved the most in this series are the tragic elements and the atmosphere. The first forty percent or so of this book is just talking to the point where I was getting bored. I like court politics and intrigue, but I can't tell if this was just dull or I'd already checked out by the time stuff actually started happening.

Also, maybe it's because I've been seeing this as an ode to tragic plays, but I think I was hoping for a lot more rash decision-making and human errors making things so much worse. Something like that does happen, but the fall-out was really disappointing. I don't want to explain what I mean for spoiler reasons, but I just feel like certain things that were built up over the last two novels didn't get the right kind of pay-off.

The ending was bittersweet for me. While I do like that it wasn't a happy ending-- again, making it feel more like a tragedy-- it still felt more happy than I would've liked. To be fair, I did skip a lot because I was so bored and disconnected, but for me the ending still felt a little nicer than one would expect after all that happened before.

On the whole, I did still like all three books. This one felt like it was a little weaker because so much of the first section was just talking, with a dash of tragedy. I missed the atmosphere, and the pay-off for certain elements wasn't satisfying for me. I would still recommend it, though, because it's so different and much more dramatically tragic than most YA out there.
