There's nothing more important than transparency.
That's what we believe in this office. You know that. As local authority employees, our job is to be transparent with the public. And you understand very well that transparency requires us not to tell tenants the truth. Transparency requires discretion, quite simply because we can't be certain of anything. The government raises the State Pension age every year. Do you know when you'll be able to retire? Of course you don't, and neither do I. Every few months we get another notice about wage cuts or benefit reductions, or they go changing the eligibility criteria. Next week they might change how people qualify for social housing. Our job doesn't require truths, it requires procedures. The procedures are the only truth that is relevant听to听us.
On the Greenwich Line is Katharine Halls translation of 毓賱賶 禺胤 噩乇賷賳鬲卮 by 卮丕丿賷 賱賵賷爻 (Shady Lewis Botros), an Egyptian author, essaying and journalist who lives in London.
The novel is based in part on the author's own experiences. Our narrator, an Egyptian Coptic Christian, works in social services in London in a department dealing with housing applications, including from from asylum seekers. The availability of actual housing has been severely restricted by austerity, but the department has a solution:
We couldn't provide any services, since there was hardly any social housing left and a million people were on the waiting list, but we could increase the paper trail and lengthen processing times to a few years. As time ticked by, and application processes inched their way to completion, council staff would be occupied and necessary. Data would have to be collected and entered into the system, then checked and reviewed every so often, then rechecked and inputted into tables and charts; then updated data had to be collected and compared with the previous data, and so on. Likewise, this long-winded administrative process sustained applicants through years of living in temporary accommodation and permanent poverty. Nourished by a combination of faith in the welfare state and wishful thinking that the process would produce the desired outcome, they remained hopeful throughout; the emblem of their hope was the yellow application form. This wasn't a new idea. It had been the logic of bureaucracy since time immemorial: I once read an interesting book about Ancient Egypt - its name escapes me now - which confirmed my theory. The Pharaohs, it explained, only undertook vast, pointless construction projects like the Pyramids of Giza in order to keep the populace busy during flood season, when there was no agricultural work to be done, and to make sure they didn't start asking existential questions, or having midlife crises, or thinking thoughts, or generally get up to any of the mischief a person with too much time on their hands is likely听to听get听up听to.
The novel's Macguffin comes at the beginning when the narrator receives a call from a friend back in Egypt with a rather random request - that he arrange for the burial and funeral for a young man, a Syrian refugee, whose family are im Egypt. Having survived an (improbably?) epic journey to make it to London (at one point a friendly dolphin helps out), he then dies a banal death in squalid accomodation in the UK, and his family are unable to obtain visas to come to bury him and unable to afford to repatriate the body:
To tell you the truth, the story of the young man鈥攚hose name was Ghiyath鈥攚ould have been more exciting if it had happened, say, ten years ago. Or if it hadn鈥檛 been so intensely repetitive. If it had ended with some unexpected outcome or been crowned by a more heroic death.
According to Ayman, Ghiyath and two cellmates had dug a tunnel a hundred miles long using plastic spoons, a tunnel that traversed the line dividing regime and opposition territory. Seemingly no sooner had he climbed out the tunnel than one of the opposition factions arrested him for some reason or other (no surprises so far). For the three weeks he was detained in opposition territory, control shifted back and forth between twenty-two different factions (or twenty-three? I鈥檓 not sure). A shari鈥檃 judge allied with one of the factions condemned him to death for uncertain reasons, but the judge himself was executed half an hour later. And so the late Ghiyath escaped certain death.
The story鈥檚 liable to get tediously sidetracked in labyrinthine details, especially when it goes into how he survived forty-one air raids carried out by airplanes from twenty-one different countries; the regime鈥檚 barrel-bomb assaults; gas attacks, including the colored and colorless kinds, the kinds that have a powerful stench and the kinds that are odorless; and that鈥檚 without even mentioning the Katyusha听rockets.

The author has observed, in an interview in ,that migration and epic journeys are part of world history, but the modern twist (the pyramids an exception) is the bureaucracy that now accompanies immigration, and that the Greenwich Meridian from which the novel takes its title, is a symbol of how power can be exercised.:
And one of the narrator's colleagues, Kayode, a Nigerian, has a theory that everyone working in their department is a different shade of black, including, causing her great offence, a blonde Eastern European:
'But Kayode, she's not black. She's actually very blonde. You know that.'
'No, she's black,' he answered. 'We're all black here?'
'Not all of us. What about Liam? He's white and he's got ginger hair.'
'He's Irish, therefore he's black.'
鈥榃hat about Alan? He's English.'
'Communist. That makes him black.'
'OK, what about Dee? She's not Irish or a communist?'
'She's a lesbian and she grew up in care. Double black.'
'What about me then?'
'You're Muslim, and Muslim is black.'
'I'm not a Muslim, you know that. My family are Christian.'
'Makes no difference. You look Muslim, and Muslims are black.'
'What, a person can "look Muslim"?'
'Of course! At least, they can here. Everyone who's not white is a Muslim.'
'OK, so Chinese people are Muslims?'

'So you can be black without being Muslim.'

'But basically what you're saying is that there's nobody at all who's white.'
'Exactly,' said Kayode. 'Real whites are very rare. You might live your whole life in this city and only glimpse one or two of them. You might not even notice them, unless you're very observant. But don't forget, black people aren't all the same. There are black Blacks, Eastern European Blacks, Chinese Blacks, very black Blacks, half-and-half Blacks, Muslim Blacks and black Muslims, Blacks by choice, and Blacks by coincidence or bad luck, Blacks in disguise, crypto-Blacks who are something else in public, part-time Blacks, full-time Blacks, Blacks who are white on the inside, like coconuts, and Blacks who are white on the outside, like... I don't know.'

And while the narrator questions this theory, he ends up, despite being a Coptic Christian, observing Ramadan and avoiding pork, simply as it makes it easier to deal with his well-meaning colleagues.
These divisions are just as prominent in Egypt - the wake to commomerate Ghiyath there ends up with the attendees all being arrested for religious heresy and subversion, and Kayode also remarks that he will eventually return to Nigeria and buy a house with the money he has earned in the UK, which will then, in his own country, render him white.
This is a fascinating novel with many different stories of those the narrator encounters in the UK and in Egypt (my favourite, his right-of-centre grandmother who venerates Mrs Thatcher for, inter alia, her reputed role in ), and one which mixes Kafkesque tales of bureaucracy and satirical humour with political insight and genuine compassion, a novel ultimately about loss. It's also interesting to read a perspective on London from a novel that was written for an Egyptian audience; the author told the translator if he'd thought about it being published in English he might have written some elements differently, although I'm glad he didn't.
Against that, that means a lot to pack into 160 pages and this isn't a novel for anyone hoping for loose plot lies to be tied up, and, oddly for a short book, at times my attention waivered with the shifting narrative focus.

This was great! I absolutely loved the voice of the narrator and the themes it touched on. The unnamed narrator works for a government housing office that helps to find accommodation for migrants, but he is increasingly put under pressure by the tightening of immigration rules and the racism he personally experienced as an Egyptian man. It was such a compelling book which looks at the affects of the governments immigration policies on real people and it attempts to undermine the obsession with numbers and statistics that we see in the media, challenging us to rebel against the dehumanisation of not just migrants but the homeless and unemployed. It was such a great novel which also looks a little bit at London culture and assimilation into British life as an immigrant. Superbly written and witty, I really recommend this book.

What a great little book. Despite dealing with difficult themes it鈥檚 very funny which of course serves to highlight the absurdity of its subjects - from the bureaucracy behind much of the UK鈥檚 social services to attitudes towards immigrants, integration and the political situation in both the UK and Egypt.
It was fascinating to read a book partially set within the UK鈥檚 social security system but through the eyes of someone not brought up here - both for the different perspective but also for a style of satirical novel that is not particularly prevalent here. Some of the observations left me feeling really quite ashamed and read like the kind of political satires we are used to set in places like the Soviet Union. The grinding dehumanisation of those dealing with the 鈥榮ystem鈥� (in this case mainly immigrants and refugees) was heartbreaking. It also made me wonder why there are so few books on the subject given the huge impact of these sorts of governmental departments on so many people鈥檚 lives. This is a short book, quickly read, but it asks a lot of uncomfortable, important questions and is definitely worth the effort.

I think this is my favourite one of the Peirene Press subscriptions yet. Translated from Egyptian it's a story about modern day Britain, about immigrants, austerity, bureaucracy and life in general. It's sad, it's funny, it really spoke to me and it's a remarkably beautiful and captivating novel of our times

Zynisch schreibt Shady Lewis 眉ber das Fremdsein, Stereotypen und den Tod. Das Buch hat mich 眉berrascht, da der Schreibstil Ernstes teilweise lustig wirken l盲sst und gleichzeitig eine bedr眉ckende Stimmung in mir ausl枚ste. Wenn man sich darauf ein l盲sst, macht es Spa脽 den Ausschweifungen zu folgen und l盲sst einen den Kopf sch眉tteln 眉ber die Ironie der B眉rokratie. Das Ende fand ich wenig erf眉llend, dennoch vielleicht ganz passend.
