3.5 Stars. (Review contains slight spoilers for books 1 and 2 of the series).

Honestly, I didn't enjoy this as much as book 1 & 2. It was different to the others because instead of heavily relying on the surgeon (and the apprentice), it focused on Rizzoli & Isles solving a few cases and dealing with personal issues. I did find it weird that Rizzoli didn't really think of the Surgeon at all. He went from dominating the first two books, to disappearing and I know it might be because she doesn't see him as a threat anymore but I just found it odd. I did miss the Surgeon's perspective and I missed that dynamic they had because that is probably one of the best aspects of the series. So instead of getting the Surgeon's POV, we got Maura Isles' POV alongside Rizzoli's. Unfortunately I didn't really like her. I found her intriguing in book 1 & 2, but it turns out getting access to her internal monologue wasn't what I thought it would be. She's quite similar to Rizzoli but she lacks the likeability and I didn't find her interesting. I kind of wish that it was just Rizzoli's POV in this book because reading Isles' POV just made me like the book less.

I thought the story was interesting enough but I thought the story was hijacked by each woman's love/personal life. I did think that the second half of the book was better because that is when everything started to connect and really make sense. I did wish that the crime aspect was more prominent and more developed. It was quite predictable which was unfortunate but I thought Gerritsen had a really good idea. I also didn't find the writing as enjoyable (not sure if that had to do with me not enjoying Isles' POV or if it just wasn't as good). I read this book because I wanted something that was quite addictive but it didn't fully deliver. I still think this is a good series and I will keep reading on. Hopefully I just grow to like Isles as a character.

I know it sounds like I'm sort of bashing this book but I did give it 3.5 stars, which isn't bad and I did enjoy it. I guess I was just a little disappointed because I know how good Gerritsen can write and this just wasn't up there for me. I would recommend this series.

A very entertaining Rizzoli & Isles novel that starts with the murder of a nun and another nun critically injured in a convent. The story was interesting and suspenseful throughout, and I really enjoyed the character of Father Brophy.

It all starts with the murder of a nun within her abbey along with the assault on another. As Jane Rizzoli and Maura Isles investigate, it leads them toward some highly surprising and divergent paths, including connections to other circumstances.

This is the book where we learn more about Maura Isles, finally. Her voice is the strongest though Jane gets considerable space. Nicknamed the Queen of the Dead because of what she does and her gothic look, Maura had to be more complex than a caricature (she is) and that unfolds. And, her relationship with Jane Rizzoli develops beyond their roles of detective and medical examiner.

There were also personal elements for both that added texture to them as characters and the story. Both became more relatable here because of it and their work dynamics played out well. I really liked the story because of this and the complexity of the cases. I was a little blindsighted by the excellent twists at the end though the clues were there. I also listened to the story and Anna Fields did a great job but her pronunciation of Jane鈥檚 last name (Ritz-zoli) drove me nuts. Otherwise, this was a very good reading experience.

鈥淏less me, Father, for I have sinned.鈥 No one comes out and says those words in Tess Gerritsen鈥檚 . This is the third suspense novel in her Rizzoli and Isles series, and I confess, it鈥檚 a practically a sin that I haven鈥檛 gotten around to reading this book until now. It鈥檚 been three years since I read , and as many avid thriller mystery readers know, there are so many amazing books out there just waiting to be read that it鈥檚 hard to get to even a small percentage of them. Now that I鈥檝e returned to Gerritsen鈥檚 series, I won鈥檛 be waiting another three years to read the next one.

The first two books focused primarily on Detective Jane Rizzoli. This time around, we get to know Medical Examiner Dr. Maura Isles a lot better. Called "the Queen of the Dead" by medical students and some of the staff, Maura is a dedicated pathologist who believes that she has a duty to the deceased. She is calm in the face of the most gruesome crime scenes, a controlled, efficient professional. Rizzoli, on the other hand, is testy these days. She鈥檚 tired, cranky, and not feeling like herself. It鈥檚 days before Christmas, and the winter weather and holiday stress is getting to her. Must be the flu, she says.

When they are called to a crime scene at an abbey for a contemplative order of nuns, Rizzoli and Isles face challenges different from any they have faced before. These are women who do not venture out into the world except on rare occasions. Who would want to harm any of them, much less kill them? These are women of faith. Dr. Isles is a person of science. Detective Rizzoli, too, wants answers the sisters cannot give because their faith simply does not let them imagine the possibilities. Can there be a middle ground?

As a medical examiner in the Boston area, Dr. Isles has more than one case, naturally. What are the chances that she would have another death related to the murder at the convent? Little by little, Tess Gerritsen weaves her story. Along the way, she reveals some secrets. I was feeling proud of myself for figuring things out as I went along. I was putting two and two together and getting four. So far, so good. As for the main piece of the puzzle, however, I was waiting for that one big aha moment when I would have at least an inkling. I did, actually, and it was a good hunch, but I was slightly off the mark. Only slightly.

Do we find out what was bugging Jane Rizzoli those days leading up to Christmas? Read the book. And better yet, to find out if there is any passion and joy under that 鈥淨ueen of the Dead鈥 mask that Maura Isles wears, read the book. Who killed Sister Camille 鈥 and why? Read the book.

I鈥檓 glad I did, and I look forward to continuing this series very soon!

Another well-written entry in Gerritsen鈥檚 Rizzoli and Isles series... even though this is really the first time we get a chance to meet the ultra professional ME Maura Isles, I finally understand what folks like about their match up.

And even if the mystery was actually a bit cliched (I won鈥檛 give it away but you鈥檒l know what I mean when you read it), it was still an interesting mix of characters 鈥 victims and villains alike.

I especially liked that Jane Rizzoli鈥檚 life is changing as Maura Isles is introduced to readers. This book was the start of both a professional and personal relationship which was spurred on by personal issues first. I look forward to continuing this series!

The third book in the Rizzoli & Isles series and we get to know the characters better. Especially Maura Isles who until this book seemed to have more of a supporting role. The story opens with Isles performing an autopsy when she receives a call from detective Jane Rizzoli asking her to come to a crime scene.

The scene is the chapel of Our Lady of Divine Light, a cloistered convent. There two nuns were savagely attacked. 20 year old Sister Camille is dead. The other is critically injured. Who would attack nuns? And why? Sister Ursula is too badly injured to talk. Sister Camille is dead but maybe she can tell Maura Isles what happened. During the autopsy Dr. Isles makes a shocking discovery. Sister Camille had recently given birth. Who is the father? A suspect obviously.

With the exception of Sister Camille the sisters at Our Lady of Divine Light are all elderly and cannot help in the investigation but there is one person who no one really pays any attention to. Noni, the daughter of the cook / housekeeper, may be young but she is very observant and provides some invaluable clues. Then another body is found, mutilated beyond recognition. An attempt to hide the identity?

As Rizzoli and Isles continue their investigations into the deaths a link is discovered. A secret that someone is going to great lengths to make sure remains hidden. Things are not always what they seem at first. Maura Isles finds the crimes hit close to home. She is known as the "Queen of the Dead" because of her work and goth appearance but she had a life before she became a medical examiner in Boston. In this story we get to know more about that life and I found myself liking her more. The reader also learns about a change in Jane Rizzoli's life and a decision she will have to make.

I enjoyed this book very much and recommend it to anyone who enjoys the thriller / suspense genre. Especially those with strong female leads.

Even though I have already read and reviewed The Surgeon and The Apprentice, Tess' previous books in the series, I still feel that it's such a perkiness of mine to review any book written by this genious (I emphasize: genious!). Gerritsen, one more time, now through The Sinner, made me hook into her writing until the end, NOT letting me to put it down, despite a few flaws I found that I dare myself to point again.

A crime envolving two nuns, in the circuntances presented by Jane and Maura therewith the investigation of the case, conduces us to initially match the name of the book to the probable "nickname" that could characterize one of the victims. However, two more crimes 鈥 a woman that can't be identified plus a massacre in a village in India years before 鈥 come to the surface and probably discard any previously settled teory by the readers about the ending of the story. Also, it's disclosed that the three crimes are, at last, all connected.

During several pages of the book, we're shown Maure Isles' life in and out of the morgue more throughly. It's soon noticed that the focus is aimed at introducing the patologist as a protagonist of the series 鈥 just like the policialwoman-detective Jane Rizzoli is in the previous book, The Apprentice.

This point of introducing one more protagonist into the series can turn it into a tiring reading at certain moments. Besides, can shadow the awesomeness the ending could have had 鈥 knowing the talent of Tess Gerritsen as a writer 鈥 and conduce the readers not to enjoy the book, but to even let them a little disappointed.

Nothing of this, though, mean that being acquainted more deeply with the character has turned The Sinner into a wearisome book. On the contrary: I've met a less cold and "self-loved" Jane Rizzoli, intimately braver to relieve everything, accepting her mistakes and wills, and to push off all the fear and weakness she denied to have. I've also met a new friend, Maura, who shows to be a better positive person, with a big heart, but not allowed to feel completely happy, considering her familiar, relationships problems. We get to, soon, relate ourselves to Maura and Jane, two protagonists that we, certainly, will miss once we have to say goodbye.

If you haven't noticed, I'm obsessed with this series. Despite how different the books are from the tv show, reading them really makes me want to binge watch the show ( I need to see if its streaming anywhere).

The Sinner is about the death of a 20 year old nun and the nearly fatal assault of an elderly nun. While investigating Rizzoli and Isles discover the dead nun had recently given birth(not a spoiler, that's on the back cover).

I was happy to finally get more Maura Isles. The first two books contain very little Isles but in The Sinner we get a Isles center storyline involving her ex-husband. The murder mystery at the heart of this book wasn't as interesting as the first two books but the character development of Jane Rizzoli and Maura Isles more than made up for it. Jane's storyline is the B-story but could just as easily been the main storyline.

I'm really enjoying this series and I really needed this book last night after watching All 4 hours of Leaving Neverland. This book served as a stress reliever.

If you're looking for a female centered crime series I think you'll love the Rizzoli & Isles series.

A complex case for Jane Rizzoli and Maura Isles with some red herrings thrown in. The case kicks off in with the violent assault of two nuns in a convent, leaving one dead and one grievously injured. One has recently returned from India and one is new to the order and has a shameful secret - but is that the reason they were attacked? The gruesome find of a hideously mutilated body in an abandoned building also keeps Rizzoli and Isles busy. Both must also deal with their love lives as Maura's ex husband turns up wanting a second chance and Jane must confront her feelings about FBI agent Gabriel Dean. After some twists and turns and some top class investigative and forensic detective work a shocking international cover-up is discovered, but not before a thrilling ending.

First there was Detective Jane Rizzoli, then you were introduced to Maura Isles. Now you get to know her more as Tess Gerritsen tells you a part of the story through her point of view. You get to see where she lives and how she works beyond the operating table in the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
Two nuns were attacked in a Convent, one a young runaway from a family of skeptics and the other is an old-aged humanitarian. Each had a deep dark secret, but who was the reason for the attack?
In Maura's personal life, she is reunited with her ex, a philanthropist doctor, who just happens to be home for the holidays. While Jane, the investigating Detective on the case has been feeling sick for the last few days and the reason of her sickness is something she rather not have her colleagues know about. Especially not Agent Gabriel Dean, the FBI Agent who helped her in The Apprentice.
Lepers, a corporate scam, religion, love and family are some of the topics that come up in this excellent page-turner that surpasses the previous book.馃槏

A weak sister in the acclaimed Jane Rizzoli series!

Diehard fans of Tess Gerritsen, acknowledged in the publishing world as the reigning queen of the medical thriller genre, will certainly enjoy THE SINNER, her seventh novel and the third in her very successful Jane Rizzoli series. In this outing, a puzzled, frustrated, slightly shop worn and very pregnant Jane Rizzoli shares center stage with her colleague Maura Isles, the crusty medical examiner for the Boston Police Department everyone calls "The Queen of the Dead". The brutal beating of two nuns within the confines of their quiet cloistered convent leads to an exquisitely detailed and informative low key examination of the forensic details of the case and the dogged police investigation which slowly but steadily leads through a thicket of difficult clues to the ultimate solution.

I have to hand it to her! Gerritsen makes a valiant effort to spice up the story with some interesting side plots - Rizzoli's pregnancy by her lover, FBI agent Gabriel Dean; the return of Maura Isles' ex-husband who seems to have ulterior motives connected to the case; the discovery that one of the murdered nuns had recently given birth and discarded the baby in a pond near the convent! But despite her best efforts, THE SINNER comes off as very weak gruel compared with the fiery cuisine offered up in the previous two Rizzoli novels, THE SURGEON and THE APPRENTICE. Somehow the story just never leaped off the page and approached the compelling page-turning urgency of her previous efforts.

That's not to say that it was unenjoyable. It's just that Gerritsen had set her own bar so very high and THE SINNER was lack-lustre by comparison to that exacting standard. But, as I said earlier, fans will enjoy it and I wouldn't want to have passed this one by in terms of the long term development of her characters. I'm still a fan and I'll look forward to her next novel.

Recommended.

Tess Gerritsen Fans Group Link - my second read

In Boston's snow filled December, Reverend Mother Mary Clement of Our Lady of Divine Light, needs help:
(1) Sister Ursula Rowland(68) - beaten into "comatose", a trained nurse back after a India mass slaughter in a abandoned Octogon Chemical plant.
(2) Sister Camille Maginnes(22) - murdered, was pregnant & baby found dead - consensual or rape? DNA tests needed to clear Father Daniel Brophy. They talk to Randell(her father) & Lauren(stepmother) to see if it was incest by someone at her grandmother's funeral that occurred 9 months ago.
(3) Next, a India woman found with hand & feet amputated, they name her, "Rat Lady".

Jane's FBI Agent friend, Gabriel Dean, & a Dr. Matthew Sutcliff, Univ of Vermont enter to help.
They need to determine the father of the Sister Camille's child? Effect of India's Octogon Chemical plant? Can the 3 murders be tied to one? Was it a Paid killer?

A savage attack on two nuns within the cloistered walls of Our Lady of Divine Light prompts Detective Jane Rizzoli to call on the assistance of pathologist Dr Maura Isles. The attack has left one of the sisters dead and the other just barely clinging to life.

This is the 3rd book in the Rizzoli and Isles series but the first to primarily feature Maura Isles. A lot more emphasis is placed on the forensics around post mortems and autopsies and Tess Gerritsen goes into quite graphic detail with more than one corpse on Isles鈥 table (the squeamish should perhaps hesitate before reading). Not surprisingly, it鈥檚 through Isles鈥 forensic work that the major breaks in the case are found including one or two real doozies.

This book also serves to provide a deeper introduction into Maura helping to flesh out her character more fully. We learn a little about her past and the status of her somewhat complicated relationship with her ex-husband.

This proves to be a fascinating case which is not quite a locked-room mystery but, given the closed convent in which the nuns live, can almost be treated as one. It鈥檚 hardly surprising, then, that the case is taken into vastly unexpected directions with a series of well-timed twists that kept me slightly off-balance.

As already mentioned it鈥檚 the work performed by Maura that reveals the crucial tiny links in the case that are then taken over by Rizzoli and developed. It gives us a glimpse into the way in which the pair effectively team up to get the most out of a good medical examiner and a competent detective.

It augurs well for future books in the series which I am looking forward to reading soon.

The Sinner is a macabre thriller. If you have a vivid imagination, this book will probably gross you out in parts. Besides, "the case" Rizzoli and Isles have some personal dilemmas to face. This is perhaps the best book of this series I have read so far.

This is a well written murder mystery featuring Rizzoli, the tough female detective, and her colleague and friend, Isles. Maura Isles is the Medical Examiner (ME) who "processes" the dead involved in violent crimes. In this story, a brutal murder occurs involving two nuns in a Catholic convent. Rizzoli and Isles are called to the crime scene.

The author takes the reader through the processing of clues. There are many twists and turns and a few a false leads that I was suckered into. In spite of the story time frame being set at Christmas, there is little cheer in the story until the very end. I found I could relate to this sentiment. I also found my mouth watering at the description of the Christmas dinner being prepared at the Jane Rizzoli's parents house.

Here's a story where I was totally absorbed in the mystery and its characters.

Good, solid story with some interesting threads and twists.

Like many other people, I watched the Rizzoli and Isles TV show and quite liked it. Although it wasn't the TV show that made me start reading these books. I knew about this series before and read other books by this author. And even though I was aware that the show is very, very loosely based on the book series, it still surprised me a lot when I read how many differences there are. This is my second book in this series and this time I was even more prepared. And yet I was surprised again. However this time at least the book was focused on the work of Rizzoli and Isles.

From reading the first book in this series, I remember that I didn't like Rizzoli very much and I generally had a problem with poor knowledge of the characters. And this problem is at least partially solved in this book. I'm not convinced that I like Rizzoli or Isles now, but at least I got to know them much better. And I can say with full conviction that they are interesting and complicated characters that add a lot to this story.

And the story is quite good, though maybe not as scandalous as a dead nun in a closed order would suggest. The full potential of this thread seems not to be fully used, but when I read the book, I had no problem with it. The solutions invented by the author are interesting and not obvious. There are a few things I didn't expect. And the whole story flows smoothly and without unnecessary lengthy fragments. Everything has its purpose. The action is swift and fast-paced with numerous twists and turns.

I am also satisfied with the ending, I mean solving the case, or actually a few cases. As for the events in the personal lives of Rizzoli and Isles, and especially Rizzoli, I have mixed feelings. But this is probably mainly due to the fact that I am surprised by this thread. I don't think I know Rizzoli well enough yet to be involved in her life. But it might be interesting in the next books. At the moment, I think I like Isles more, I find her more interesting.

This book has definitely encouraged me to read the others in this series.

Rare is the thriller that can scare me enough to leave the lights on at night, while bringing me to tears. The Sinner did both. Filled with more twists and turns than a labyrinth, The Sinner throws a curve at both Jane Rizzoli and ME Maura Isles. Jane must deal with a huge obstacle in her life as well as her relationship with Gabriel Dean, and Maura must face her own ghosts in the form of her ex-husband.

This book serves as a pivotal point in the character development of both women, and is a must-read if you are a follower of the series.

The mystery itself is tantalizing and surprising. No plot spoilers here -- you must read it yourself to see how the death of two nuns in Boston relates to a terrorist attack on a colony of lepers in India. A true page-turner.

漠temp膷iausiu tyrimo laiku, Ricoli ir Ailtz taip pat susiduria ir su asmeninio gyvenimo i拧拧奴kiais - 寞 Moros duris pasibeld啪ia tas, apie kur寞 ji ma啪iausiai steng臈si galvoti trejus metus, o Ricoli turi priimti vien膮 svarbiausi懦 sprendim懦, lemian膷i懦 jos ateit寞.

Tre膷ioji Ricoli ir Ailtz serijos dalis t臋sia puik懦 knyg懦 start膮 ir be joki懦 priekabi懦 j膮 skaitydama m臈gavaus kiekvienu puslapiu! Nors tikrai n臈ra smulkinamasi su 啪iauriom ir nemaloniom detal臈m, bet visa ta tyrimo eiga pasirod臈 寞tikinama. 艩ioje dalyje labiau susipa啪寞stame ir su Mora Ailtz, tad viskas palengva eina link i拧siai拧kinimo kada Ricoli ir Ailtz taps nei拧skiriama komanda, ko a拧 labai laukiu! Gal 拧iek tiek atskleistas 啪udikas buvo netik臈tas, bet tas ir u啪klupo mane nepasiruo拧usi膮 ir visus sp臈liojimus pavert臈 niekais! Labai m臈gstu kai 寞 detektyvus 寞traukiami ir asmeniniai gyvenimai, bet viskas buvo taip gra啪iai i拧balansuota, kad nebuvo niekur perspausta, o intriga i拧laikyta iki galo. Tess Gerritsen dishes up another brutal crime thriller featuring Rizzoli & Isles. A nun is murdered in the sanctuary of the convent where she lives & as the case progresses more shocking revelations come to light.
Gerritsen's previous Rizzoli & Isles novel have been fast paced & entertaining, but about half way through The Sinneer I was concerned that this one was going to be a disapppointment. There were times when the story became bogged down with the private lives of the two main characters & these chapters semmed forced & laboured to me.....until I doscovered that later in the novel Gerritsen cleverly fitted them into the plot. I should have known better than to jump to rash conclusions about such a great author.

I've read Tess Gerritsen's first two Rizzoli and Isles books before this one. I really love the way that the case progresses and keeps you hooked in those two. This one, while still very interesting, is a very abrupt change from the first two books. And while I read both of the first two in five days, this one took me almost six weeks because when I set it down, I didn't feel all that strong of a need to pick it back up.

Between book two and this one, the setting moves from a blistering summer to an almost intolerably cold winter, which really suits moving from the point of view of the passionate Rizzoli to the cool and logical Isles. However, I feel like they didn't start making the connections in the case that I had made in the beginning of the book until after page 200 (of 342 for my version). The case itself moved much more slowly and there was a lot more of the personal lives of the characters.

This would be fine except... I don't really like the characters that much. Isles is okay, but a bit too poetically grand in her thoughts sometimes. And Rizzoli is just incredibly, annoyingly abrasive and whiny. Maybe it's just me, but the characters at this part of the story are just a bit too exaggerated.

In the end, this is a crime thriller where the crime is not nearly thrilling enough; a medical thriller with barely any medical aspect to it; and a practice in exploring characters that I didn't like. However, I liked the first two so much that I intend to read the next book as it sounds much more interesting.

Entrei neste livro completamente envolvido e aterrei nas 煤ltimas linhas bastante satisfeito. Mais um policial muito bom!

Tudo come莽a com as duas freiras que foram atacadas com uma viol锚ncia brutal no solo sagrado da Capela. Uma delas teve morte. A outra entrou num estado mortalmente critico. Quem as atacou e porqu锚? Fiz todas as dedu莽玫es e falhei em tudo.

RATING: 4 STARS
(Review Not on Blog)

I really enjoyed the third book in the series - it continues to deliver on the gritty suspense! This novel has a new case and we get to know more about the elusive Maura Isles. This series is more case driven than about the characters but never fear as the books progress we do learn more about them. I am a fan of Jane's mom.
