In a last-ditch hope, the Genevian mech program was founded. Its goal to augment humans into cyborg fighting machines; mechanized warriors sent to hold the front lines against an enemy that was storming a hundred worlds.
Yet few wished to undergo the brutal process, and so criminals were used, their minds enslaved by control chips and obedience enforced through Discipline.
The Genevians spent their mechs against the Nietzscheans with little care, eventually struggling to find enough bodies to convert into fighting machines. Quotas were set in the courts, prosecutors and judges paid off to ensure that even the most benign offenses would see the perpetrator end up in a mech factory, rights and mind stripped as much as body.
Rika is one such victim.
Forged into a second generation scout mech, she is sent to the front lines where she serves with distinction, crushing countless enemies beneath her clawed feet.
But, despite giving everything she had, Genevia still loses the war, and Rika is abandoned. Now she slings cargo on Dekar, little more than a human loading machine, struggling to keep ahead of the slow breakdown of her mechanized body.
Until someone makes her an offer she cannot refuse. An offer that will see her rejoin the fight—whether she wants to or not. Rika will have to summon a strength she never knew she had to bring about the victory that she once thought was lost.
Get Rika’s Marauders today and follow the ultimate rags-to-riches story, where one woman rises up and saves not only herself, but her people.
This omnibus volume contains all 7 books in the Rika’s Marauders series, as well as two novellas: Rika Mechanized and Rika Crucible.
Malorie Cooper likes to think of herself as a dreamer and a wanderer, yet her feet are firmly grounded in reality.
A ‘maker from an early age, Malorie loves to craft things, from furniture, to cosplay costumes, to a well-spun tale, she can’t help but to create new things every day.
A rare extrovert writer, she loves to hang out with readers and people in general. If you meet her at a convention, she just might be rocking a catsuit, cosplaying one of her own characters, or maybe her latest favorite from Overwatch!
She shares her home with a brilliant young girl, her wonderful wife (who also writes), a cat that chirps at birds, a never-ending list of things she would like to build, and ideas
This is world building on an epic scale viewed through one persons experiences. From being taken involuntarily and forced into the military in a gruesome fashion growing into a person of position!
Some entries in SFF force the female lead to be bonded to men in some normative fashion thus enabling an increase in her power (political or otherwise). Yet here we have Rika being the best person she can be - strong, empathetic and willing to take chances, gaining power yet still hewing to her ethical standards.
Yes, there are more battles and societal change that Rika has to navigate (that's a big universe out there) but that's what makes this collection so engrossing.
One spoiler - when the author suggests you take a break and read a few different books set in the same universe - just do it!
For the sake of honesty - I acquired this box set through a giveaway - now I just have to figure out how i can buy the rest set in this universe!
Its finally all together and the remarkable character that is Rika progresses from street waif to ........ What always gets me with this character and the stories she finds herself in is no matter how much machine you may become the humanity and caring that comes through is unique whilst still being one of the most kickass , take charge hero to exisit in the large Aeon 14 universe. Honestly having such a great collection all togther may be the undoing of sleep as once you turn that fiest few pages you may never read scifi stories again. Rika and the other characters have forever changed my outlook of the future and how we retain what makes us human even as circumstances change around us while being the type of person everyone ones to become. Anyways this feels a little too gushy compared to my normal critique ,and if your reading this ,then the bargain of the Aeon is contained within and im perhaps holding you back from it.
Military sci-fi at its best. From the first chapter I was addicted to this story. So I read so far before I realized that it was based on the intrepid saga. Then I took a side journey to the Orion wars and then back to finish this series.😀 Great characters with realistic situations and lots of action and adventure.I look forward to more from this series. 10/10
Running through the whole story of Rika, instead of reading it in smell pieces, felt so different. You can see that the Author style can really sink you into this universe. Even I can't stop reading this compilation for a whole week!
I have read all of the books individually and they are amazing. If you like mechs, strong women, AI and a kickass main character your in luck. This is well worth a read.
Mal Cooper is a prolific writer. That she can generate such captivating characters and scenarios across multiple storylines is incredible. Rita was 17 when she was arrested for stealing bread and turned into mech to feed the Genevian war machine. Genevia lost the war and Rita becomes a cargo loader in a nowhere system resigned to her fate. Mechs are valuable though and when Rita is captured and sold to a mercenary outfit called the Marauders, she begins a journey that sees her become a leader that everyone fighting tyranny begins to rally around. Rita is the real deal - join her as she kicks ass across the stars. You won't be disappointed!
I had read the Orion War series, but never got around to Rika due to available time. I went back and read this, loving having all books in one set. This was so much better than I expected, and it was nice to see some gaps filled in that the main series didn't cover. I highly recommend Rika's Marauders
I immediately went into shock as to how a government could, knowingly, turn a prisoner into a cybernetic entity by removing healthy limbs without a qualm. But then I watch the U.S. And North Korean dictators. I don't really like Warcraft weaponry or their use.
Biggest problem is that the audiobook are not labeled. Fifty three hours of audio with part one to over two hundred, totally sucked. Beyond that the writing of the stories is good but the mixed metaphors and technical conflicts with physics, knocking me out of the, I can only give them three stars. The latter books are better but the first few Cooper is still trying to figure out her world and feelings.
