He started writing novels in 1961 and is probably best known for his early work Trout Fishing in America. He died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in 1984.

So the Wind Won't Blow It All Away, Richard Brautigan
So the Wind Won't Blow It All Away is a novel written by Richard Brautigan, published in 1982. The story is about a narrator in 1979 remembering the events that happened when he was 13 in 1948.
The young narrator lives in a lower class suburban Oregon neighborhood and collects beer bottles or does favors for neighbors to earn money.
He also spends time alone fishing in a pond on the outskirts of town. Instead of buying a hamburger at a local diner, he buys bullets from the gun shop across the street. The book starts with this, and then hovers and builds around this event until the end.
While shooting rotten apples at an abandoned orchard with a friend, the narrator accidentally shoots the friend and kills him. Because the shooting was an accident he is acquitted, but because of his ruined reputation, his waitress mother doesn't get tips anymore, he is severely bullied at school, and they are forced to move to another town where the event is not known.
*Spoiler Alert*
The book ends with a return to an observation of two obese people fishing in a temporarily set up "living room" by the pond. Most of the book is made up of observations of the different strange characters that surrounded the narrator when he was a child.

So the Wind Won't Blow It All Away is a novel written by Richard Brautigan, published in 1982. The story is about a narrator in 1979 remembering the events that happened when he was 13 in 1948.
The young narrator lives in a lower class suburban Oregon neighborhood and collects beer bottles or does favors for neighbors to earn money.
He also spends time alone fishing in a pond on the outskirts of town. Instead of buying a hamburger at a local diner, he buys bullets from the gun shop across the street. The book starts with this, and then hovers and builds around this event until the end.
While shooting rotten apples at an abandoned orchard with a friend, the narrator accidentally shoots the friend and kills him. Because the shooting was an accident he is acquitted, but because of his ruined reputation, his waitress mother doesn't get tips anymore, he is severely bullied at school, and they are forced to move to another town where the event is not known.

The book ends with a return to an observation of two obese people fishing in a temporarily set up "living room" by the pond. Most of the book is made up of observations of the different strange characters that surrounded the narrator when he was a child.

Richard Brautigan goes down memory lane remembering his troubled adolescence, living on the fringe of society 鈥� outsiders, outcasts, pariahs 鈥� and death鈥� So much death.
And he scribbles his bitter reminiscences of the past to leave them behind So the Wind Won鈥檛 Blow It All Away like a handful of dust鈥�

I had become so quiet and so small in the grass by the pond that I was barely noticeable, hardly there. I think they had forgotten all about me. I sat there watching their living room shining out of the dark beside the pond. It looked like a fairy tale functioning happily in the post-World War II gothic of America before television crippled the imagination of America and turned people indoors and away from living out their own fantasies with dignity.
This is my second Brautigan novel. I didn't really care for the first one I read - - so I wasn't expecting much from this book. Yeah, yeah . . . I was wrong.
Here, the man seems to be writing from the heart, telling an almost autobiographical tale of a young boy growing up poor in Oregon. It's a sad story that fairly pulses with regret, beautifully told, and very evocative.

Yesterday when I was walking my dog, I came around the corner and saw this:
Obviously the first thing I did was take a picture for Instagram (follow me !), where sometimes I do the oh so clever thing of photographing things that are definitely not art and then give them a pretentious title and the hashtag #everythingisart. I called this one "Sidewalk Parlor, or: Brooklyn Homage to Brautigan's 'So the Wind Won't Blow It All Away.'" Because right? A whole living room set up on the curb! Just like the whole living room set up on the bank of the pond in this book! (Check out the cover of this edition to see what I mean.) I am so clever, you know?
This all made me realize that I haven't read (or reread) any Brautigan in years. So I dug this out of ira bottom-shelf dust and zipped through it in a couple hours, since it's barely over 100 pages.
Oh man, Brautigan.
I feel like he belongs to the great group of "authors I would not love if I met them for the first time now, but since I have been in the habit of loving them for lots of years, I just breeze past all their flaws and keep loving them." I mean, he is not a normal writer and this is not a normal book. It's a little slip of a thing, and it's riddled with typos and digressions, and even setting that aside, it's barely more than a strange sad anecdote stacked with a few other strange sad anecdotes. There are a lot of dead children, a lot of crazy old men, a lot of poverty and rather decrepit nature. Also, like a quarter of the book is about hamburgers.
But of course, the couple who rumbles down a rutted bank in a pickup truck each night to set up a complete living room (couch, rocking chair, end tables, doilies, lamps) on the bank of the pond so they can be comfy while they fish 鈥� they're still there, in all their bizarre bib-overalled glory.
Maybe I should go back to In Watermelon Sugar or Abortion, where Brautigan's piquant absurdity really shines. Because I'm not sorry I dipped back into this again, but neither am I surprised I'd forgotten everything about it except the cover.

This all made me realize that I haven't read (or reread) any Brautigan in years. So I dug this out of ira bottom-shelf dust and zipped through it in a couple hours, since it's barely over 100 pages.
Oh man, Brautigan.
I feel like he belongs to the great group of "authors I would not love if I met them for the first time now, but since I have been in the habit of loving them for lots of years, I just breeze past all their flaws and keep loving them." I mean, he is not a normal writer and this is not a normal book. It's a little slip of a thing, and it's riddled with typos and digressions, and even setting that aside, it's barely more than a strange sad anecdote stacked with a few other strange sad anecdotes. There are a lot of dead children, a lot of crazy old men, a lot of poverty and rather decrepit nature. Also, like a quarter of the book is about hamburgers.
But of course, the couple who rumbles down a rutted bank in a pickup truck each night to set up a complete living room (couch, rocking chair, end tables, doilies, lamps) on the bank of the pond so they can be comfy while they fish 鈥� they're still there, in all their bizarre bib-overalled glory.
Maybe I should go back to In Watermelon Sugar or Abortion, where Brautigan's piquant absurdity really shines. Because I'm not sorry I dipped back into this again, but neither am I surprised I'd forgotten everything about it except the cover.

Anyway, I just kept getting smaller and smaller beside the pond more and more unnoticed in the darkening summer grass until I disappeared into the thirty two years that have past since then, leaving me right here, right now

So The Wind Won鈥檛 Blow It All Away was the final novel Richard Brautigan published during his lifetime. It is fictionalize autobiography of his own past built around stories of his childhood. Its recurring theme is death.
Richard Brautigan never talked about his childhood. Not to his closest friends. Not to his lovers. Not to his daughter, even when she asked. The subject was verboten and everyone knew it. He left his home in Oregon in 1956 when he was 21 years old and he never looked back, never saw or spoke to his mother again, ignored his sisters reaching out to him. His past was dead and he would not speak of it.
Yet here in this late book Brautigan takes those long buried memories and weaves from them the most hauntingly sad swan song. He is at his most exposed, his most vulnerable in these pages, figuratively leaving his blood on the page as he writes about a life already fading into the Dark.

Brautigan's final novel is him at his most straight forward and most melancholy, but from a sample of a handful of his novellas devoured with great enthusiasm this feels like his most complete portrait of Americana; his surreality and absurdity toned down by the sadness of an old man looking back at what he concludes was the death of American imagination. It's an absolute pleasure to read, Brautigan in full control of his skills as a storyteller and lover of language, the narrative voice perfect for the tale being told, with plenty of interesting observations of time, place and events that border on the magical realist in the way that fading memories of a way of life almost vanished can often have.

The best way I can descibe this is as a blend of Ray Bradbury's nostalgic boyhood memories in Dandelion Wine with Haruki Murakami's playfully mundane surreality and fondness for food (hamburgers in this case) laced with a touch of Philip K. Dick's speculative "what if-ness" and maybe some hash brownies too. Sad and weird. I liked it a lot.

I'm really on a roll right now reading remarkably beautiful novels. Up to now I'd only read a couple of Brautigan's books, one of his novels and his story collection Revenge of the Lawn, but this one really made me wish I'd started reading him years ago!
I'll break it down into its constituent elements of brilliance for you:
The concise (innocent?) diction of the American idiom is in this novel perfected. Mark Twain's lesson is updated admirably and it out-vonneguts Vonnegut for pithy aplomb and the honest beauty of what can be made of simplicity and directness in language.
The temporal evocation of end-of-WWII America, 1970s America (when it's written and from which the events of childhood are depicted) and a Pacific Northwest childhood of the late 1940s are simply sublime.
The not-politically-minded truths of poverty in America are similarly sublime--the best, in fact, I've ever read, I think. The facts themselves, the realities, are utterly moving without any need for editorialization.
The pseudo-Ancient-Greek theme of fate and happenstance well out Camus' Camus and Sophocles in a single gut-punching blow. (It also out-vonneguts Deadeye Dick by a long shot. Pun intended.)
If I were you, I'd stop whatever I'm doing right now (obviously browsing through book reviews on 欧宝娱乐) and read this novel.

Un giorno drammatico in cui "qualcosa" succede.
"Qualcosa" che strappa un dodicenne dal mondo dell'infanzia e segna indelebilmente il suo futuro.
Una narrazione quindi procede con salti temporali: da un prima e un dopo fatto di povert脿 economica, affettiva e di relazioni.
Una morbosa attrazione verso la morte che porta un bambino di cinque anni ad arrampicarsi su una sedia per spiare alla finestra i funerali sotto casa. *
Leggi e ti si appiccica addosso una grande e grave tristezza.
Non sono riuscita per un solo momento a separare voce narrante ed autore.
Si pu貌 consigliare un libro straziante?

I had become so quiet and so small in the grass by the pond that I was barely noticeable, hardly there. I think they had forgotten all about me. I sat there watching their living room shining out of the dark beside the pond. It looked like a fairy tale functioning happily in the post-World War II gothic of America before television crippled the imagination of America and turned people indoors and away from living out their own fantasies with dignity.
In those days people made their own imagination, like home cooking. Now our dreams are just any street in America lined with franchise restaurants. I sometimes think that even our digestion is a soundtrack recorded in Hollywood by the television networks.
Anyway, I just kept getting smaller and smaller beside the pond, more and more unnoticed in the darkening summer grass until I disappeared into the 32 years that have passed since then, leaving me right here, right now.

Melancholy, regret-laden, mournful, beautiful. It still showcases Brautigan鈥檚 marvelous, off-kilter sense of humor and whimsy, but there鈥檚 a palpable, mature sadness here as well that makes this one of his heaviest works (if not his heaviest).
Out of all of Brautigan鈥檚 many brilliant novels, So The Wind Won鈥檛 Blow It All Way remains my very favorite. Not a place to start if you鈥檙e new to his work, but it鈥檚 a haunting stunner and one that you definitely shouldn鈥檛 skip once you鈥檙e initiated.

Questo racconto 猫 molto bello e costruito con molta sapienza. Fin dalla prima pagina si sa che l鈥檈t脿 della spensieratezza 猫 finita ormai per il ragazzo, che rievoca la sua ultima estate di gioia di vivere, seguita da altre stagioni da vivere con fatica. Questo stato d鈥檃nimo del narratore e la distanza nel tempo enfatizzano la dolcezza struggente con la quale viene rievocata 鈥渓a bella estate鈥� in cui il ragazzo viveva in prossimit脿 del lago, pescando dal pontile, ascoltando il vento fra i giunchi, i tordi, i grilli. Il suo appuntamento preferito era verso il tramonto, quando aspettava l鈥檃rrivo di una coppia che ricostruiva un salotto sulla sponda del lago, scaricando i mobili dal furgoncino, divano, poltrone, lampade, tavolini e soprammobili.
L鈥檃tmosfera trasognata dell鈥檌nfanzia, durante la quale il tempo sembra infinito, aleggia ancora sulle acque e fra le pagine, quando il ragazzo ricorda del pontile malfermo che aveva costruito, con l鈥檃sse che calava sotto la superficie dell鈥檃cqua quando poggiava il piede e gli si infradiciavano le scarpe da ginnastica, ma non gliene importava. Le scarpe da ginnastica pi霉 o meno logore erano la sua unica preoccupazione concreta di ragazzo povero. Poi una serie di scelte casuali, su cosa fare, su dove andare, se entrare o meno in una tavola calda, lo porta in un frutteto a sparare alle mele e qui una disgrazia lo strappa ai suoi dodici anni per portarlo lontano, in altre case senza lago.
L鈥檈quilibrio del racconto si regge molto sul fatto che il tono non 猫 melodrammatico n茅 disincantato: il ragazzo e la madre si fanno coraggio e cercano di tirarsi fuori da tutto questo. Tuttavia, in trent鈥檃nni, il ragazzo non smette mai di rivedere il film del lago, del salotto sull鈥檃cqua, dell鈥檋amburger, dei proiettili calibro 22 e delle mele.

Narrating over thirty years in the future, the protagonist of Richard Brautigan's "So the Wind Won't Blow it All Away" is voiced with longing. Longing for a change of circumstance that, on the surface, seems simple, but, with all things in life, is of needless (or needed?) complication. Every decision you make alters the remainder of your lifetime. I have found myself entertaining a myriad of alternative paths I could have taken, wondering: where would I be were I to have realized a earlier or took earlier initiative to make sure of b or was born as a c instead of a d. Why does my mind wander so? Because it longs for anything other than THIS. THIS always feels like a sickness. Brautigan has always been tinged with a hint of sadness. Some of his sentences are usurped by feelings of heartbreak and loneliness. But never has he sounded as desperate as he does here. Brautigan's narrator is constantly cracking jokes, identifying absurdities, getting sidetracked, telling bizarre anecdotes, and extended similes and metaphors to the point of surrealism, BUT, the naturalistic attitude typical of Brautigan's prose is replaced by the narrator's (and, in turn, the author's own) desperation. It becomes apparent that the stories and substories told in the pages leading to the tragic incident that is ultimately at the novel's heart are not told because the narrator has to tell them for the sake of pacing or thematics, they are told because the narrator is trying to avoid the confrontation of his trauma. He'd rather talk about hamburgers. In another novel, the constant hamburger references would get stale or seem gimmicky, but here they take on a pivotal role: this is how many people deal with trauma. Hang these words over my grave: It is not about the hamburger, it is about what the hamburger represents.

Very melancholy and lacking much of Brautigan's usual humor, but something about it affected me really deeply. There's a great ring of truth about it. I like Brautigan best when he's in that semi-autobiographical mode, where you can tell that what he's writing came from some personal experience, even if it's fictionalized on the page.

That day, he should have bought a hamburger...rather than a case of .22 caliber bullets.
The decisions that we make in our life, on any given day, which sometimes boils down to a split-second flash in our minds in which the roads diverge and we take one path and leave the other one behind, can sometimes be the best decisions we ever made in our life but at other times, the repercussions can be devastating.
Although Brautigan neither confirmed nor denied it, many think that this novel was based on two stories that happened to Richard when he was a child. If so, it must have haunted him for so long which makes me almost want to cry for him.
Gun violence is a modern tragedy that happens every day in the United States and everybody knows that, even the NRA with their gunhappy blindfolds on. It is even more tragic when people, including young children, are accidentally killed by guns going off or someone getting caught in the crossfire. This is one of those stories.
If this novel, So the Wind Won't Blow it All Away, is an accurate portrait of Richard's boyhood, no wonder he wanted to get away and forget it all and move to San Francisco. The one element that shines through, above all the chaos, despair and tragedy hanging in the air, is the humour. Richard's humour here does not act as an entertainer so much but as a saviour - a saviour, a haven, to which we can all run to or cling to in order to escape from the ugly spectre of reality. This book is mostly about death - 1) Richard recounts the time he lived in an apartment next to a funeral parlour; 2) some young kids in his neighbourhood who have many things Richard didn't have such as love and money meet tragic deaths and finally 3) the shooting accident which is the climax of the novel. But because Richard uses humour in a very dry and droll way, threading it deftly between the lines of an otherwise serious novel, he manages to defy the ugly thoughts of death, if not spit directly into its face with pride. That's how I felt about this novel as I read it.
Wow, Richard Brautigan is one great writer. If there is one thing I have learned from reading Richard Brautigan it's this - not so much that life is a big joke but simply don't let it get to you. There's nothing personal about bad luck. God doesn't have any personal vendettas. Just get on with it and add a splash of humour into the mix. It makes life so much easier to live and get on with.
Fantastic book by Brautigan, once again. Absolutely required reading.

Piccolo gioiellino di struggente bellezza, questo racconto lungo 猫 l'ultimo scritto di Richard Brautigan, prima che decidesse, nemmeno cinquantenne, di porre fine a una vita fin troppo dedita all'alcool e falciata dalla depressione.
Pi霉 che una storia unitaria, sono squarci nella infanzia/adolescenza del protagonista, un ragazzo americano che vive nella povert脿 economica e di sentimenti, in una famiglia che lo lascia per la maggior parte del tempo solo con se stesso, nel tedio pi霉 totale. Un ragazzo che prova un piacere morboso nel guardare i funerali dalla finestra, scrivere e studiare della preparazione di hamburger.
E proprio un hamburger, alla fine, poteva salvarlo. Un hamburger con tanta cipolla, come piaceva a lui. E quella scelta. Quella scelta sbagliata..
Una prima parte anche divertente e buffa (all'inizio il protagonista sembra un semplice bambino buffo e strampalato come un qualsiasi altro bambino) fa da prologo al lento dramma che andr脿 a compiersi in quel 17 febbraio 1948, data spartiacque che domina l'intero racconto. La data della fine del sogno americano, di quella polvere che ti si attacca addosso come fuliggine e non ti si stacca pi霉, come viene ripetuto pi霉 e pi霉 volte nelle poche ma essenziali pagine di questo "American dust".
Pagine che trasudano malinconia, tristezza e solitudine che non hanno paragoni.

After reading Brautigan's "In watermelon sugar" I was encouraged to read more of him. and -maybe not as much as the surreal world of Watermelon Sugar,but in a large amount- was also fascinated by this book(so wind won't take it all away) .surfing in a little boy's twisted mind -who in his own words is too weird -was as weird as himself.
i also loved the metaphors, such as:
Childhood thoughts of early death continue to unravel in my mind, perhaps unpeel is a better and more accurate way of looking at it, like peeling an onion into a smaller and smaller circle with tears growing in my eyes until the onion is no more, all peeled away and I stop crying.
As a weak point of the book , some parts of the narration were longsome and unnecessary.
