Andrzej Sapkowski, born June 21, 1948 in 艁贸d藕, is a Polish fantasy and science fiction writer. Sapkowski studied economics, and before turning to writing, he had worked as a senior sales representative for a foreign trade company. His first short story, The Witcher (奥颈别诲藕尘颈苍), was published in Fantastyka, Poland's leading fantasy literary magazine, in 1986 and was enormously successful both with readers and critics. Sapkowski has created a cycle of tales based on the world of The Witcher, comprising three collections of short stories and five novels. This cycle and his many other works have made him one of the best-known fantasy authors in Poland in the 1990s.

The main character of The Witcher (alternative translation: The Hexer) is Geralt, a mutant assassin who has been trained since childhood to hunt down and destroy monsters. Geralt exists in an ambiguous moral universe, yet manages to maintain his own coherent code of ethics. At the same time cynical and noble, Geralt has been compared to Raymond Chandler's signature character Philip Marlowe. The world in which these adventures take place is heavily influenced by Slavic mythology.

Sapkowski has won five Zajdel Awards, including three for short stories "Mniejsze z艂o" (Lesser Evil) (1990), "Miecz przeznaczenia" (Sword of Destiny) (1992) and "W leju po bombie" (In a Bomb Crater) (1993), and two for the novels "Krew elf贸w" (Blood of Elves) (1994) and "Narrenturm" (2002). He also won the Spanish Ignotus Award, best anthology, for The Last Wish in 2003, and for "Muzykanci" (The Musicians), best foreign short story, same year.

In 1997, Sapkowski won the prestigious Polityka's Passport award, which is awarded annually to artists who have strong prospects for international success.

In 2001, a Television Series based on the Witcher cycle was released in Poland and internationally, entitled (The Hexer). A film by the same title was compiled from excerpts of the television series but both have been critical and box office failures.

Sapkowski's books have been translated into Czech, Russian, Lithuanian, German, Spanish, French, Ukrainian, and Portuguese. An English translation of The Last Wish short story collection was published by Gollancz in 2007.

The Polish game publisher, CD Projekt, created a role-playing PC game based on this universe, called The Witcher, which was released in October 2007. There is also a mobile version of the game which has been created by Breakpoint Games and is being published by Hands-On Mobile in Western Europe,Latin America and Asia Pacific.

The English translation of Sapkowski's novel Blood of Elves won the David Gemmell Legends Award in 2009.

Trylogia Husycka to mistrzostwo polskiej fantastyki. Cho膰 stwierdzenie, 偶e jest to 鈥瀟ylko鈥 fantastyka by艂oby troch臋 nieuczciwe, nazwa艂bym to powie艣ci膮 historyczn膮 (1420-36) z elementami fikcji (taki historyczny magiczny realizm). Spotykamy tam tak偶e Gutenberga (szukaj膮cego sponsor贸w), Miko艂aja Kopernika (do艣膰 mocno boj膮cego si臋 inkwizycji), rozwi膮z艂ego Miko艂aja z Kuzy. Ca艂a opowie艣膰 przeplatana jest cytatami z Augustyna, Tomasza z Akwinu i innych dzie艂 czytywanych w tamtych czasach z ogromn膮 ilo艣ci膮 sformu艂owa艅 w 艂acinie klasycznej. Opowie艣膰 z jednej strony diabelnie zabawna (w szczeg贸lno艣ci posta膰 cynika Szarleja i jego egzorcyzm贸w) z drugiej brutalna i pora偶aj膮ca swoj膮 melancholi膮. Bohaterowie s膮 rewelacyjnie skonstruowani: Pomurnik, Szarlej, Samson, Reinmar von Bielau. Balansowanie pomi臋dzy rado艣ci膮 i swawol膮 a makabrycznymi zdarzeniami wraz z silnymi emocjonalnie w膮tkami w niej zawartymi wychodzi wr臋cz doskonale.

艢wiat艂o艣膰 wiekuista niechaj 艣wieci na wieki, c贸偶... nie u Sapkowskiego, wszak Lux perpetua jest nudna.

This is the final book in this historical fantasy trilogy. This author has a distinctive style (or at least a distinctive translation) with a dense story. This series has very little fantasy and so will most appeal to readers who enjoy the historical aspects.

In terms of the story, I most struggle with the main character who I find to be overly average. The entire story centers around him and unfortunately I just never felt fully attached to him. This is a solid fantasy series, but not a personal favourite based off my specific tastes in fantasy.

If you are interested in this series, you will need to start back at the first book, The Tower of Fools

Disclaimer I received a copy of this book from the publisher.

In his Witcher saga Sapkowski failed to come up with a reasonable ending. This time he did it well. It is full of interesting details which you just love to much on, especially when reading it for the second time. Oh and I cried in the middle of the book.

The final book of Sapkowski鈥檚 Hussite Trilogy, Light Perpetual, alternates between riveting action and boring information dumps. It is historical fiction both meticulously researched and poorly executed. I鈥檝e felt conflicted about this series from the first, and this final book did not resolve my conflicted feelings.

The Hussite Wars sold me on this trilogy. These conflicts are a fascinating part of European history 鈥 battle tactics and technology that link medieval and modern warfare, theological and political disputes that foreshadowed the next century鈥檚 Reformation and the religious wars that it spawned 鈥 yet the period remains largely untapped in fiction.

The author does several things exceptionally well in these books. His actions sequences are riveting. He makes you feel the tension, the terror, and the chaos of battle. And he doesn鈥檛 romanticize it. No matter the rationale or noble sentiments of cause, once the fighting commences he writes it as the murderous hell that it is 鈥 no heroes, only the survivors and the dead. He remained honest to that vision with this final book, not shying away from a bitter, non glorious ending that matched the resolution of the Hussite Wars.

Unfortunately, there are also glaring flaws in this book and series. Topping these is the confusion of the story. Point of view changes rapidly and often, sometimes shifting forward and back in time as well. Many times the point of view will shift to minor characters, little known to us, or sometimes unknown. And there are SO MANY characters! It is damn near impossible to keep them straight, as many have only a passing significance to our main protagonist, and are off stage for extended periods of time before popping up briefly again. Which leads directly into the books most serious flaw 鈥 most of the history necessary to explain the realpolitik of the Hussite Wars is info dumped through endless conversations, usually between several people whom we can barely distinguish or follow where they fit into the tale. These conversations eat up huge chunks of text. The information in them is vital, but its delivery is artless.

In the end, this book and trilogy delivered enough to earn a three stars/I liked it rating, but it could have been so much better. If I read this author again, I will stick to shorter works where his particular skill set might be more effective.

Ostatni tom trylogii husyckiej to kolejna dawka ciekawych wydarze艅 oraz przyg贸d naszego Reynevana. By艂a Praga, a teraz b臋dziemy troch臋 siedzie膰 na 艢l膮sku.

艢wietna trylogia, przy kt贸rej sp臋dzi艂am mn贸stwo mi艂ych chwil. Pozna艂am wszystkie trzy 办蝉颈膮偶办颈 przy u偶yciu s艂uchowiska i to by艂 dos艂ownie strza艂 w dziesi膮tk臋. 艢wietnie oddany 艣redniowieczny klimat, specyficzny humor, ciekawe postacie, sporo przyg贸d oraz brak nudy.

Zostawiam 5 gwiazdek.

Husitska trilogija And啪eja Sapkovskog mo啪e se svrstati u istorijsku fantaziju-obuhvata period stra拧nih
U svem tom mete啪u, pratimo paralelno avanture glavnog junaka i njegovih sadrugova, verske, politi膷ke i druge spletke, bitke, pobede i poraze, 拧pijuna啪e i izdaje, ljubavne zgode i nezgode, radosti i tuge.
Svojim britkim jezikom, uz puno humora i ironije, Sapkovski bez milosti zaseca u srce 膷ove膷je tame, iznosi na videlo dana sve, i one najskrivenije crte 膷ovekovog (ne) morala, njegovu gramzivost, surovost, pohlepu, izdajstvo, kukavi膷luk...
Ali ima i hrabrosti. Ima i nade. Ima i svetlosti, usred tih pokolja, izdaja, surovosti.
Ne膰u vam re膰i kako zavr拧ava knjiga. Pro膷itajte sami. Vredi.
Sapkovski je sjajan pisac. Meni omiljen, i me膽u pet, meni najomiljenijih
pisaca fantastike.

This trilogy was unforgivably ruined for me by the lazy, anticlimactic, and meaningless ending.

Overall, the second and third books turned into something much more dark, depressing and gruesome than the first one. Which isn't bad, I appreciate when an author depicts in a realistic way the miseries of human condition. Humor starts to disappear, and the fantasy elements start to wither. However, I began to enjoy myself quite a bit because the dark turn was also balanced with new interesting characters and storylines. The key factor wasn't that Reynevan is less of an idiot, but that he becomes a more capable, less useless idiot. All of this, alongside with Sapkowski's talent for world-building narrative and a growing climax rhythm throughout the central two quarters of the third book, made me hopeful for a satisfying ending, even if it was bittersweet or tragic. A good conclusion after an epic final confrontation in which most of the storylines are resolved.

Well. Not only that epic confrontation does not ever happen, the ending is also painfully pointless. Those interesting new characters and plotlines go nowhere. They become some sort of irrelevant prop that the author uses to justify the circumstances the main heroes go through. When those conflicts are over, those characters are gone without explanation, in spite of having entire chapters dedicated to display the dimension of their past, personality traits and progress over the timeline of events of the book. Past secondary character arcs and side stories remain unresolved as well. Major characters die in stupid and meaningless manner. Scharley's character arc simply stalls and Reynevan's is inconclusive and non-transforming. All the events of the third book are rendered meaningless and pointless because of the unnecessary tragic conclusion given to Reynevan's quest to save his beloved, all he does is literally for nothing. It's frustrating because even with how much of an unlikable idiot Reynevan is, after all he's been through, I wanted to see him if not succeed, at least extract something transformative out of the tragedy. But that doesn't happen. We don't even get to see the idiot succeed at taking proper revenge against Grellenort!

After reading this trilogy and his Witcher saga, I'm left with the impression that Sapkowski is an author of great talent for generating and building amazing ideas, but fails miserably when putting them to an end. Almost as if he grew tired, lost his patience and out of spite went like: "to hell with it, I didn't even ask all of you idiots to enjoy this". As much as I love the body of Sapkowski's work, I don't think I'll be reading anything else from him any time soon. And I wouldn't advise you to do so either, if you don't wanna get the stories you have enjoyed and characters you liked ruined at the very end for no reason.

A煤n as铆... el mejor.

I was somewhat afraid when I started reading 鈥淟ight Perpetual鈥.

Not because this meant the Hussite saga would end and, just like it happened when I finished the Witcher saga, I would likely end up harbouring some sort of emptiness. And not because the book would be badly written (I doubt Sapkowski would allow himself publishing bad writing). I was afraid that there would be something different about this book and that I would not like it.

To be honest, I had some reservations even when reading the earlier books of the saga. To begin with, no matter how infatuated with Sapkowski鈥檚 works I am, these books are exceptionally grim.

Yes, there is beauty in these books. Some playfulness and humour 鈥 too. However, these are somewhat overshadowed by the historical context. There was a point when I paused reading 鈥淲arriors of God鈥 for a few evenings or so. One of the scenes shook me so, I nearly cried. It was a bit difficult to pick up the book afterwards. Fair enough 鈥 all that grime and darkness of Medieval ages, religious fanatics, psycopaths and sociopaths flourishing amidst war and torture, rivers of blood, shattered bones and brain spraying all over.

God, how lucky us millennials are to be born when we were.

The idea that the world is unfair and that one can only deal with that is probably one of the leitmotifs in the trilogy. Which, I think, is a bit difficult to accept for us millennials 鈥 we were simply born in a very different 鈥 and privileged 鈥 world. And Reynevan, is, in a sense, one of us 鈥 a Gen Z fellow. But it does not make it easier to accept the alternative reality of his world.

But it was not only this that I was somewhat wary of. When reviewing 鈥淲arriors of God鈥, I admitted that Hussite trilogy was, in a way, more difficult. Not only because of lists of dates, names and surnames, villages, no matter how important they are to portray the period in as realistic way as possible, were difficult to keep track of. Yes, I did it again 鈥 picked up the book without having glanced at the previous books of the trilogy, so impatient I was. But there was more to it. The story itself is more difficult to deal with.

To start with, Sapkowski digs deep and he crumbles the intrigues (other than the evident ones) distributing them piece by piece contextually, in the background. For one, he鈥檚 an absolute troll and does not bother with holding the reader by a hand: if you wish, you may pick those bits up and make out the bigger picture. Or you may not. Nolens volens, etc.

The old devil, he is.

To keep the reader interested, he plays around with the obvious ones. E.g. will Reynevan and co. find his beloved and pay his enemies what they are due when there are so many of them? The reader may suspect that yes, he will. But, since this is Sapkowski, one should be careful.

To be fair, already when reading the earlier books, I had begun to be somewhat tired of that constant run and chase motif. Silesia, Bohemia, Poland, Moravia. And now 鈥 the German lands. On one hand, that鈥檚 interesting. I have recently heard another fan of Sapkowski suggesting that the geography of Hussite trilogy can be wonderfully exploited for one鈥檚 holiday in a very beautiful and yet relatively undiscovered part of Europe. Which is a wonderful idea. Sapkowski鈥檚 descriptions are detailed and a lot of towns or villages described in the book still remain, including their churches and castles. But what was tiring 鈥 the constant chase. You barely have the characters鈥 arses out of the bushes and there is already someone capturing them or there鈥檚 a battle. Followed by an algorithm of some rescuing party or some rabble worse than the one they are having troubles with or some deus ex machina magically mysteriously appearing. Followed by 鈥淎ssassin鈥檚 Creed鈥 like chase by some faction, depending on whose territory the characters crossed. In a computer game, you can kind of tolerate that but in a book, a third book in a series at that, you start to get bored.

Although. If not for rivers of blood and authorship/profit sharing issues, I totally see the Hussite trilogy as a PC game.

Getting back to irks 鈥 somebody in the past criticised Sapkowski for abusing destiny as a plot device. I fervently disagreed then. But now I have to admit that he does that somewhat. Although, in our part of the continent coincidences kind of make sense. Everyone knows one another. Reliance on networking is key. And here the story is set in Medieval Ages when the population is minute and, considering the setting, one is often at quite a risk of being burnt at a stake. Which kind of explains the obsession with heraldry in this series.

And then, Sapkowski still does that: he drops an intriguing concept or a detail and then, he just drops it off for the annoyance of the reader. In this case, I was a bit disappointed with the scene involving Grellenort鈥檚 headquarters. On one hand, it follows the best of traditions of mafia/police movies with concussioney flashbacks and does it so well. On the other, I was expecting so much more from it!

And just when you鈥檙e about to get properly irritated, Sapkowski suddenly changes his modus operandi and starts pulling bunnies from his magic hat. Suddenly, there is an almost forgotten but interesting character who turns out to be more important than one thinks. Or a new character and good luck figuring out what their role is despite knowing they are important to the story. Complaints on the Wallcreeper being nerfed just because he was shown somewhat too human in the second book? There you go 鈥 have some extra background and some hiccups along with that. You thought the tax collector arc is over? Think over. The story going too dark? There you go, humour and irony. As the story was written having Eastern European audience in mind, there, have some authentic regional political intrigues of that era. Turns out, my Lithuanian ancestors were some good nasties too and contributed to disturbances in the region just like everyone else. And, importantly, the question of the Vytautas鈥檚 crown! Want to know why we ended up not having a second king? And what it has to do with the Hussites or the Pope?

There! Now you will know 鈥 at least one of the possibilities of what may have happened. Of course, in Sapkowski鈥檚 all-mocking light.

鈥濶ow aged a little over thirty, the Lithuanian, raised among Poles at the Wawel, embodied the worst features of both nations: benightedness, narrowmindedness, duplicity, pathological ambition, hubris, savagery, unbridled lust for power and an absolute lack of self-criticism.

And that鈥榮 how Sapkowski got me so bad, I couldn鈥榯 put the book down. I read the book when on a train, when munching pizza in my bed, reading throughout the night with a light in my bed just like a teenager. Overslept and got late for work? Never mind! You can read more on the train. And then at work. Because what can you do when you wait?

Ah, so bad.

And yet, I will absolve Sapkowski from any sins, if only for the red-haired vejdalotas of god Perk奴nas - Budrys - and his prophecies! This scene made me roar with laughter on a train, earning some funny looks from fellow passengers.

The holy river in Jordan, my ass :D

Won鈥榯 share more details. Want more 鈥 read the book (thanks to Gollancz, it's now available in English!).

One last thing.

THE question.

The Witcher saga or the Hussite Trilogy?

Well... My heart is with Geralt. It was, it is and it will be. The Witcher saga is lighter, more playful and it does not leave so much grime in one鈥榮 heart after reading the book. Despite the Styga castle. Despite Rivia. Massacres of non-humans. The pitchfork. Because the witcher, despite having renounced all, finds the inner strength to do the right thing 鈥 to protect something that is dear to him. Even knowing the end point. Yennefer, Ciri, Tris 鈥 they do the same. Giving the hope to the reader 鈥 things can be different. That things are not over yet.

That works for me because I want to believe in fairy tales.

The Hussite trilogy, instead, takes this and wipes arse with such wishes, then throws them on the ground, tramples them over and spits on them. And you pick them up, rub them off 鈥 because what can you do? And carry on. If you are lucky, there will be someone to touch your arm in support. There is some hope 鈥 you know that God exists in this world, so, in theory, there is also some hope of retribution. Maybe.

I think Hussite trilogy does the final developments better. While the story itself is a bit dragged out at times and Sapkowski drops off a couple of characters I thought were important without revealing what happened to them (or maybe I missed it while nodding off reading late into the night), there is an overall sense of finality. You do get a sense of where the story is going. Not because of predictability but because you are gradually moving towards something that just has to happen. And the way the story ends is realistic and logical (even considering the fantasy elements). It鈥榮 just more organic. You don鈥榯 have the Styga chapter that suddenly crushes your hopes and feelings. You鈥榲e had that constantly happening throughout the story and when the inevitable happens, you just take it stoically because you had to take in all that grime and darkness earlier. And I have a feeling that was an intentional effect.

There is more 鈥 that bird鈥榮 eye view. The complex political picture of Europe at the time. And that picture is believable.

The Hussite trilogy has more character development, although that mostly regards Reynevan.

The Witcher saga is more playful in terms of fantasy but that is predefined by the story itself. When you finish the Hussite trilogy, you understand how much of a fairy tale the Witcher saga was after all. Yes, it is based on the condition of fairy tales being inhabited by real people but the world is fairy tale, though. And the world in Hussite saga is brutal, based on reality. At the same time it is constructed so richly that I will need to read it a few more times to obtain the full experience. Consider history, geography, philosophies of Medieval world, medieval cuisine, fashions, magic (the magic in this book is based on actual beliefs). Consider references to historical figures, literature and Easter eggs involving direct nods to Lovecraft, for instance. And the level of that richness is such that, as I said before, CDPR took some worldbuilding elements from The Hussite trilogy rather than the Witcher saga for their great fanfiction (e.g. lamias, magic mirrors for communication, the war landscapes, battlefields, visual NPC design).

Whichever you prefer, both series reflect different sides of the same coin 鈥 Sapkowski鈥榮 powerful imagination.

Lux perpetua, czyli mrok permanentny 鈥 jak Andrzej Sapkowski postanowi艂 zm臋czy膰 czytelnika na 艣mier膰

Naprawd臋, patrz膮c na ten tom, mam wra偶enie, 偶e Sapkowski podczas pisania wzi膮艂 swoj膮 maszyn臋 do pisania, zgubi艂 instrukcj臋, po czym pomyli艂 鈥瀋trl+C鈥 z 鈥瀋trl+V鈥. A potem jeszcze raz. I jeszcze.

Tom pierwszy? kiepsko ale jednak wzi膮艂em tom drugi. Tom drugi? Lepszy. Jednak dalej nie porwa艂 a偶 tak. A tom trzeci?

Reynevan 鈥 nasz kochany wiecznie b艂膮kaj膮cy si臋 emo-nauczyciel 艂aciny i okazjonalny kochanek m臋偶atek 鈥 wci膮偶 biega jak kurczak bez g艂owy mi臋dzy 艢l膮skiem a Czechami, ci膮gle a to uwi臋ziony, a to torturowany, a to ratuj膮cy si臋 cudem przez okno, komin, kana艂 lub magiczne deus ex machina. Tyle 偶e bez Arnolda. I bez sensu.

A propos sensu 鈥 czy kto艣 go widzia艂? Mo偶e zgubi艂 si臋 w redakcji? Mo偶e Sapkowski zostawi艂 go w drugim tomie, obok swojego zapa艂u do opowiadania ciekawej historii? Bo trzeci tom to mroczna, duszna podr贸偶 donik膮d, kt贸ra ko艅czy si臋 czym? ZGROZ膭. ZDRAD膭. NICZYM.

Czytaj膮c zako艅czenie, mia艂em wra偶enie, 偶e autor si臋 na mnie obrazi艂. Wszystkie w膮tki, kt贸re mog艂yby mie膰 jaki艣 艂adunek emocjonalny, s膮 albo porzucone, albo sp艂ycone do poziomu taniej telenoweli, tylko bez dramatycznej muzyki w tle.

Nikoletta? Pojawia si臋, 偶eby umrze膰. Tylko tak, 偶e cz艂owiek siedzi i my艣li: serio? SERIO? To po to by艂o to wszystko? To ju偶 telenowele na TVN maj膮 wi臋cej sensu. Tam przynajmniej wiadomo, kto kogo zdradza.

Dodajmy do tego nudne, rozwlek艂e opisy bitew (czyt. 鈥減艂on膮 kolejne miasta, dym, trup, husycki chaos, insert historyczny komentarz autora, Reynevan ucieka鈥), filozoficzne(gdyby chocia偶 nie by艂y taj p艂ytkie) pogadanki w 艣rodku akcji oraz magiczne wybory fabularne typu: 鈥濧 teraz narracja nagle przenosi si臋 do postaci, o kt贸rej zapomnieli艣cie od 300 stron鈥.

I 偶eby by艂o 艣mieszniej 鈥 ten tom pr贸bowa艂 by膰 g艂臋boki. Jak studnia bez dna. A wysz艂o jak w艂o偶enie stopy do ka艂u偶y i udawanie, 偶e to Morze Czarne.

"Lux perpetua" to lektura penitencjalna.

Do rzeczy jednak:
1. Spojleruj膮ce wst臋py rozdzia艂贸w nieszczeg贸lnie przypad艂y mi do gustu.
2. Sapkowski ewidentnie cierpi na hiperosmi臋. Pachnia艂a/pachnia艂o: popio艂em, rumiankiem, agrestem, rozmarynem, 艂ugiem, tatarakiem itd... like srsly...TATARAKIEM? Z ch臋ci膮 pos艂ucha艂abym o torsach owianych woni膮 kory d臋bu i sitowia.
2. Posta膰 Reynevana jest totaln膮 pora偶k膮, a przynajmniej takie wra偶enie pot臋gowa艂 mizerny g艂os Pana 呕urka w audiobooku. Nic tylko ubi膰 na samym pocz膮tku. Rozumiem, to fantasy, ale nawet w fantasy powinna obiwi膮zywa膰 selekcja naturalna. Po偶al si臋 bo偶e filozofina, kt贸ry pono膰 urod膮 nie grzeszy - chocia偶 i tego nie jestem pewna, bo autor zamiast porz膮dnie zarysowa膰 wygl膮d g艂贸wnego bohatera, wola艂 skupi膰 si臋 na bogatych opisach coraz to inszej, trzecioplanowej dziewki.
3. "Zwi膮zek" Jutty i Reynevana jest jakim艣 absurdem. To relacja nieznajomych os贸b oparta na ch臋do偶eniu, do kt贸rego autor zupe艂nie zb臋dnie i wr臋cz na si艂臋 dopisuje patos, metafizyk臋, zjednoczenie z kosmosem, lasem... i nieszcz臋snym tatarakiem. "sk艂adaj膮 ho艂d boginii".
6. Ostatni rozdzia艂 zupe艂nie zb臋dny. Stokro膰 lepiej, by ksi膮偶ka sko艅czy艂a si臋 na przedostatnim. Wi臋cej do rozmy艣lania, wi臋cej pola do popisu dla wyobra藕ni czytelnika.

Po艣wi臋ci艂am temu audiobookowi kilka miesi臋cy, a i na艣mia膰 si臋 - na艣mia艂am, wzdycha膰 - nawzycha艂am. Zatem 4 za czas i ca艂okszta艂t.

This review is for all three books in the series: Narrenturm, Bo偶y bojownicy (Warriors of God) and Lux Perpetua, in audiobook format jointly published by Fonopolis and superNOVA. I must give full credits to these producers because they've done fantastic and very professional job. The cast of over 200 people including many well known actors and professional singers, special sound effects and music (written by the same composer who wrote the score to 奥颈别诲藕尘颈苍 (Witcher) game) makes listening a very memorable experience.

It is a damn good action/adventure/quest and love story on the background of the XV century Hussite Wars. The background is well researched, making this almost a historical books. Almost... Here and there, Sapkowski adds a wicked gilding of witchery and magic, not too much, just enough for that what-happens-next shiver of anticipation. Bad guys are very bad. Good guys are good... most of the time. When they are not, you want to yell and slap them, annoyed that they will get themselves into even more trouble. As of course they do. There's a lot of good fun, but there's also darkness. The war, the fighting, the torture and burning of the witches... when I wrote the listening was memorable, that was exactly what I meant. I wrote 'enjoyable' but crossed it out. There is no enjoyment in the top class special effects of the fighting, the crunching of the bones, the screaming. Still, there is a good balance between the darkness and the humour, the wars and the stories of the fictitious characters.

I see the books have been translated into few languages, but no English yet. Bummer, eh, my friends? Read The Witcher Saga in the meantime :-), damn good fantasy (in this order: Blood of Elves, The Time of Contempt, Baptism of Fire, The Tower of the Swallow, Lady of the Lake. Two other volumes: The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny are collections of stories that can be read as a loose prequel).

Four stars for each of the volumes, because I only give five stars to books I know I will read again.

I could think of only two drawbacks this series has: overabundant number of Latin sentences and multitude of petty characters, you don't already remember. Happily, you will be too busy catching a breath after a flight, crying loudly for your love and laughing at greatest jokes, to even notice.

The trilogy isn't a philosophical tract, unveiling mystic truths about life, but it certainly made me look differently at the world we're living in. It just shows you how things REALLY are -- how plentiful of possible explanations meet ridiculous coincidence to make history; how religion and high ideals change nations as well as individuals; what war is truly like, and how to fight one; what means to have power, and how coin is bigger than that; finally, how there are things that mustn't be done, and things that you just have to do.

And the most incredible is, it does all this still being a fantasy book you can fall in love with.

P.S. Strongly recommend the dramatized audio books, with full cast and sound effects. Perfect for commuting.

Da li vredi slediti svoje ideale, ideju koja vam deluje jedino ispravna, kada je sve oko vas politika i podlo啪no "trgovini"?
