This small, pretty book contains twenty-four essays on motherhood, and I adored each one. Melissa Face, an educator, wife, and mom, writes in a wonderfully engaging manner. Her gentle humor and touching love of being a mother shine through in this collection. She shares moments and emotions from pregnancy, raising children, being a wife, and juggling a career. All the while, she keeps it real and enjoyable, with a focus on balance and joy.

Although I'm not a mother myself, I love reading memoirs such as this about family, home, career, and real life. What a perfect book this would be for both yourself and the special women in your life. Tuck it in a sweet gift basket, along with some coffee, of course, and maybe a muffin.

Highly recommended for all expectant parents and parents of all ages!

Melissa Face’s collection of essays based on her own early parenting years are a quick read and covers a comprehensive range of emotions and scenarios that are beautifully reflective and inspirationally soothing. If What To Expect When Expecting is a how-to for caring for your baby, then I Love You More Than Coffee is a great counterbalancing how-to for caring for yourself. It’s a literary reminder to “put on your own mask before assisting others and helps put moments and challenges into a positive perspective.

The short essays, each only a handful of pages long, can be read all at once or sampled in small doses as needed. Most of all, I appreciate the love and gratitude that percolates inside these pages. This book made me nostalgic and happy.

Open, honest, and always heartwarming, this collection of essays about motherhood by Melissa Face is not to be missed.

"When Skies Are Gray" made me cry. "Baby Evan" made me laugh. It's impossible to pick a favorite - they're all different, but share a common thread: a mother's love and a woman reflecting on the very difficult task of trying to find balance raising a family while maintaining her identity.

I think "My Time" will resonate with new moms and I recommend everyone buy a few copies of this book to give as a gift at baby showers or on Mother's Day. (Perhaps with a gift card to Starbucks?) In this essay, Face opens with "I didn't realize how selfish I was until my son was born last year. As it turns out, I really enjoy the luxury of a hot shower each day. I also like being able to drink an entire cup of coffee while it's still hot. And every now and then, it's nice to get more than three consecutive hours of sleep. Who knew I was so self-centered?" She's thoughtful and honest without ever crossing the line into bitterness or hard-edged sarcasm. Her writing style is uplifting and completely enjoyable. Love Chicken Soup for the Soul? You'll love Melissa Face's I Love You More Than Coffee.

What I find particularly interesting about Melissa's collection is that a number of the essays were also picked up by Chicken Soup for the Soul, Prairie Times, Life in 10 Minutes, and others. Melissa has a long list of articles and essays published in local and national media and this wonderful, curated collection shows her talent.

Enthusiastic five stars!

Review of I Love You More Than Coffee by Melissa Face:
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A collection of essays on parenthood, this book offers laughable and heartwarming moments blended in with the challenging; a glimpse into the life of a parent. I enjoyed reading this book so much, I devoured it in just over an hour. As a parent, this book was incredibly relatable. Stories about parental stresses, frustrations and feelings of being overwhelmed mixed in with stories of love, compassion and warmth; Melissa Face writes with such authenticity that I felt like she was writing about my life. Her collection of parental anecdotes were the perfect balance because while we all love and adore our children, we also have those moments where they can turn us into the ugly monsters we're not proud of. In less than 100-pages, Melissa has normalized the hard days, the ones that wreck us as parents, and reminds us that it's okay to have those days. I couldn't appreciate her thoughts more. These stories are genuine and each one ends with an uplifting remark. This is the perfect book to gift to any parent in your life because I'm sure that like me, they will relate to it and "gulp it down" just as I did.

Thank you to @MelissaFaceWrites {#partner} for gifting me with a finished copy of her book in exchange for an independent and honest review! And thank you for sharing your family stories with us readers, it was a pleasure to read them! This book is out now, the holidays are coming, so why not grab a copy for yourself or gift one to a parent in your life???

Melissa's book of short stories had me laughing, tearing and at many times in awe. This is an excellent read for mothers of children of all ages. This is exactly what I needed right now, especially amidst a pandemic. If I had to use one word to sum up how I feel about the collection of essays that word would be Honest. It came straight from her heart and I know damn well as much as anyone else, that as a mom, motherhood is a rollercoaster of tests & patience.

Mel, I just want to point out two essays that truly tugged at my heartstrings. 1) When Skies are Grey and 2) Hot Dogs for Lunch. My oldest is on the autism spectrum and reading those couple of pages made me appreciate momma's like yourself a bit extra. Thank goodness Delaney chose hot dogs.

As a mama of 3 littles and also a special needs family I will be returning to this book because it is extremely relatable. What a breath of fresh air. I loved it and will be sending copies out here and there to my mommy friends! 💗 Highly recommend!

Short chapters with essays on being a new mom. They progress from the writer's first pregnancy to being a full-time working mom of 2 kids.
Very relatable. Some humor. Some heartwarming.
Easy, fast read as I read in about an hour.

I felt this essay (Baby Evan) made a great point as I never looked at it that way before but I think many parents can relate.
Quote from that essay:
"I didn't realize how selfish I was until my son was born last year. As it turns out, I really enjoy the luxury of a hot shower each day. I also like being able to drink an entire cup of coffeewhile it's still hot. And every now and then, it's nice to get more than three consecutive hours of sleep. Who knew I was so self-centered?
Evan's needs take precedence over mine on adaily basis. He eats first, he gets the first bath, and he decides when everyone else in the house will start the day."

Last night, I soaked in the bathtub with a glass of red wine, and inhaled Melissa Face’s essay collection, I Love You More Than Coffee. It’s just shy of 100 pages, so it was very easy to finish in just one sitting. The very first sentence really hit home for me: “This collection spans my first eight years of motherhood, beginning in early 2010, when I stood in my bathroom and celebrated a positive pregnancy test. It made me smile because 2010 was the year that I started my journey into motherhood as well. The tone was set, and I knew that I was going to really enjoy this book. The essays will appeal to mothers and fathers in any stage of parenthood. Face takes us back to the early days, starting with that positive pregnancy test, and into the thick of it, as we navigate sleepless nights, and constant worrying. I really loved the essays on running and camping. My husband and I both enjoy running, (I’m mostly just a slow jogger nowadays) and we encourage our children to participate in fun runs in our city. Like the author, I’m also NOT a big camper, so her experience with sleeping in a tent, buggy bathrooms, and no air conditioning really resonated with me. The things we do for our children! Ha! While I was reading, I couldn’t help but smile along and reminisce about how much my tiny humans have shaped and changed my life for the better. Thank you, Melissa for brightening my evening with your relatable stories!

This is motherhood in all its glory. “Read Cooking because being a mom literally means getting shit done while doing other shit. You are constantly juggling eggs in the air hoping you don’t drop one or the whole damn dozen on your headThat’s the reality of. The struggle is real, raw, and honestly overwhelming some days.

I love You More than Coffee was all about mom being moms. Every days lives as moms, who we are, our experiences, our worries, our joys, anxieties, and this is who I was at that moment. A mom cooking dinner, while reading this heart felt book of essays while making chicken Alfredo.

I Love you more than coffee really resonated with me because it covers all the emotions we go through as moms from the pregnancy test on. The worry, the fears, the happiness, the feelings of inadequacy, the moment of joy and contentment. It is all here in these essays. Some made me smile, while other made me tear up. They all made me realize that no matter what kind of mom you are, working, stay at home, the strict mom, the cool mom, the loud mom.... in the end we are all still moms, still human and just trying to raise our kids the best we can.

What a little treasure of an anthology Melissa Face has written. It is an honest, relatable, and humorous look at motherhood that may just give you that little bit of encouragement you need!

I loved the sweet stories she shared from her personal life as a mama that so many of us can easily relate to. If you're looking for a quick pick-me-up that you can read in a matter of a couple of hours, this is the one for you! And even if you're not a coffee drinker (like me), the sweet message in the title is universal... which leads me to my favorite part: the story of how Melissa came up with the title...

But alas, I can't give that up! You'll have to pick this one up to discover the delightful story for yourself and along the way you may just find several nuggets of wisdom...

"𝑪𝒉𝒊𝒍𝒅𝒉𝒐𝒐𝒅, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒍𝒊𝒇𝒆 𝒊𝒏 𝒈𝒆𝒏𝒆𝒓𝒂𝒍, 𝒑𝒂𝒔𝒔 𝒇𝒂𝒓 𝒕𝒐𝒐 𝒒𝒖𝒊𝒄𝒌𝒍𝒚. 𝑰 𝒄𝒂𝒏'𝒕 𝒘𝒂𝒔𝒕𝒆 𝒂𝒏𝒚 𝒎𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝒕𝒊𝒎𝒆 𝒘𝒂𝒕𝒄𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒈𝒓𝒂𝒔𝒔 𝒊𝒏 𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓 𝒑𝒆𝒐𝒑𝒍𝒆'𝒔 𝒚𝒂𝒓𝒅𝒔. 𝑰'𝒎 𝒈𝒐𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒐 𝒅𝒊𝒈 𝒅𝒆𝒆𝒑 𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒔𝒐𝒊𝒍 𝒐𝒇 𝒎𝒚 𝒍𝒊𝒇𝒆 - 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒃𝒍𝒐𝒐𝒎."

Many thanks to Melissa Face for gifting me with this charming little gem in exchange for an honest review!

Did I binge read this all in one sitting while sitting in my son’s room at 2 am waiting for him to fall asleep? Yup. Did I cry reading pretty much every short story? Also yup.

Melissa, I feel like you wrote this specifically for me and my life. And honestly, this book couldn’t have come at a more perfect time.

Being a stay at home mom of 2 little ones is HARD. Especially when we’re dealing with a lot at one time over here (a teething almost 9 month old & a 3.5 year old struggling with nightmares and bedtimes). I needed this book. Every page was so refreshing; feeling like someone actually understood my life and my feelings on motherhood and parenting.

Thank you so much @melissafacewrites for this gifted copy and for literally writing pretty much my thoughts and feelings in this book. I love coffee so much, but I love my kids so much more. ❤️

For all my booksta mamas out there, you need to check this one out ASAP!

I read this in one sitting and thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. It’s a great read regardless of where you are in life because there’s some life lessons to be had. Melissa’s beautiful positivity and the kindness she instills in her kids are excellent goals for all of us to match. Some memorable pieces of advice that stuck out to me include: a coworker telling her to let household chores pile up if it means spending more time with your kids (which is true for all the people we hold dear and something to remember); her story on camping, which she detests, but uses to highlight the importance of making memories regardless of what we would regularly do; and, my personal favorite, “bloom where you’re planted. All of these wonderful pieces of advice are wrapped up in charming, intimate stories that make for a inspiring read, which I recommend to everyone, parent or not.

This is a sweet and hilarious collection of short stories about parenting. I found myself laughing out loud at some parts, such as Ethan only referring to himself as “baby Ethan because my son went through a similar phase - how often, in parenting, do we find ourselves worrying over a particular situation only for it to pass and the next one comes along? Between the fun anecdotes are poignant reminders to cherish the little moments along the way, however imperfect life may seem. This collection reminded me a lot of Clint Edwards too - if you are a fan of his No Idea: A Daddy Blog, you need to check out this collection! Thank you Melissa for the gifted autographed copy and sweet card! In true mom fashion, I read this book like I drink my coffee - in two separate sittings in the same day 😆🥰

I loved this lovely collection of essays on parenthood and appreciate the reminder that although the “growing pains of being a parent to young children are insurmountable when you find yourself immersed within the experience, it is fleeting and we should live in the moment as much as possible and focus on what is truly important. Since I’m in the throes of toddler woes myself, there were moments in this book that made me laugh, others that made me reflect, and still others that give me permission to breathe and be kind to myself. Parenting is hard. We all struggle, especially with the way things are in this day and age where both parents have to work. It takes a toll on us as parents and on our children. Melissa Face reminds us that these experiences are universal and we are permitted to give ourselves a break.

A collection of 24 essays written in real time beginning in 2010 with Melissa’s first positive pregnancy test through her first 8 years of motherhood. The journey has wonderful anecdotes of people she meets, thoughts she has and experiences that provided self-growth along the way.

This is a wonderful book to enjoy while at the same time reflecting on your own journey as a parent. It is a quick read and a heartfelt trip by Melissa that I recommend as not only a read for yourself but also a go to gift for any parent you know. She puts into words thoughts that I have had over the almost 25 years of parenting!
Thank you to the author for sending me this book to read and give my thoughts

I fell in love with this book the moment I had it in my hands! The cover, the little size of it - I don’t know. It just grabbed my heart and attention! I’m over 40 years past the baby stage of my kids, but I still can identify with many of these short essays. The worries, the fun, the stress and the joys of parenthood are all touched on in these chapters. Knowing that our “baby is now going through all these things as a mom to a 6 year old and twin 3 year olds, I can smile and pass this copy on to her. I also will be gifting it to others as they enter this wondrous stage of life!!! Thank you author Melissa Face for sharing it with me!!

I Love You More Than Coffee is a nonfiction collection of essays about life with Melissa Face's two children. Written in real time as the children have grown over the last seven years, Melissa's book provides a humorous yet honestly refreshing glimpse into modern motherhood. Her writing is engaging and heartwarming, as her angst and her overwhelming love for her children (and coffee) shine through her words. A great purchase for Mother's Day for moms both old and young, and those who would like a peek at motherhood who have never experienced themselves.

A wonderful honest and sincere read about the experience of being a parent.

I loved this book and not just for the fantastic title. It is a must read for anyone starting a family or raising young children. The writer has an amazingly honest and sincere voice in her writing as she share some of experiences raising her son and daughter.

The book is presented in a series of short essays focused on a single event or experience. This format is perfect for the busy parent, allowing you to read as little or as much as you want at one sitting. Would make a perfect bathroom reader.

The book is not preachy or exposing any one style of parenting, but is written with honesty and the wisdom of experience that only comes from being a parent. Would make a great baby shower gift!

Highly recommend this delightful book.

Here's to my first read about motherhood. I've been delaying it for quite some time... despite being pregnant. I know I could have started it anytime but I just want to be calm. But here I am, counting the days until we see our daughter and I guess this is officially the start of reading books about parenting while I still have the time.

I love these short essays because they were true to life stories of a mother from the moment she knew she was pregnant until her two children were growing up and discovering themselves. This also gave me an idea to compile my thoughts in essays, too!

Melissa Face is every parent ever. As authentic and organic as it can get, this is one absolutely honest and enjoyable read. For such a short book, it surprisingly packs everything there is to know, everything there is, to being a parent. The cheerfulness and the cheerlessness. So damn relatable.

Yes, I love coffee ☕️ and I love my kid a little more than coffee 🤷🏻‍♀️. This book served as an assurance I needed at the moment 💕

A reminder to all the parents that they are doing just fine!!!

This book is a collection of essays written by Melissa Face about life as a parent. Parenting is hard and keeping your own self identity is difficult in its own right. I personally am not a parent, but these essays were written in such a relatable way that I could easily empathize with the stories Melissa shared about parenting. I drew this book out by enjoying an essay or two with my morning coffee. I loved the humor that was woven into the book, and I highly recommend it.
