Pedro Antonio de Alarc贸n y Ariza was a 19th century Spanish novelist, author of the novel El Sombrero de Tres Picos (The Three-Cornered Hat, 1874). The story is an adaptation of a popular tradition and provides a lively picture of village life in Alarc贸n's native region of Andalusia. It was the basis for Hugo Wolf's opera Der Corregidor (1897) and Manuel de Falla's ballet The Three-Cornered Hat (1919). Alarc贸n wrote another popular short novel, El capit谩n Veneno ('Captain Poison', 1881). He produced four other full-length novels. One of these novels, El esc谩ndalo ('The Scandal', 1875), became noted for its keen psychological insights. Alarc贸n also wrote three travel books and many short stories and essays. Alarc贸n was born in Guadix, near Granada. In 1859, he served in a Spanish military operation in Morocco. He gained his first literary recognition with A Witness' Diary of the African War (1859-1860), a patriotic account of the campaign.
When I and my siblings were young kids and living in a rural island town our mother would forbid us from going out at night for fear that we might get sick because of the "sereno." Up to now I do not exactly know what this "sereno" she was fearful of was, but my vague idea then was it had something to do with the cold air from the sky descending upon one's uncovered head and making him sick.
In this Spanish novel written in 1874 ("El Sombrero de Tres Picos") I learned that a "sereno" was a night watchman who would patrol the streets of Spanish town during those days and make announcements every hour on the state of the weather.
As the Philippines was under Spain for about three hundred years a lot of the Spanish language crept into its own. I can only imagine that during the times of my great, great grandparents there had been real "serenos" in our town, roaming during the night, announcing the weather, and perhaps during bad days warning people (especially young children) against going out else they might get a cold or something. Somehow maybe people then associated "serenos" with ailments caught during nighttime romps outside, until it became that mysterious evil thing getting children sick when they go out at night which my mother's generation understood it to be.
I never saw any "sereno," but when I was a young boy I'd seen and heard "bandos"--the town crier--announcing important news in every street corner. That was the time before our town had electricity a long time ago.
When this novel was published for the first time 139 years ago the Philippines was still under Spanish rule. One interesting detail which caught my eye, in fact, was one female character here cooling herself "majestically with a very large fan brought from the Philippines." She was the Corregidor's wife.
Now ask any Filipino today what "corregidor" is and he'll say it's an island at the Manila Bay where the combined Filipino-American forces made their last stand against the Japanese during world war two. The introduction to this novel, however, explains that a "corregidor" was then an important local Spanish official, close to the position of a Mayor or a local town magistrate.
The plot revolves around a Corregidor lusting after the young wife of a miller. A bawdy tale, supposed to have made Spanish maidens giggle during those time, but which I find lame, lame, lame by today's standards.

Una divertida comedia de enredos amorosos que he le铆do casi del tir贸n.

Entertaining short humorous novel about a local official in early 19th century Spain who wishes to seduce a miller's wife and the miller's revenge. Reminiscent of the Decameron and tales of that ilk.
This volume contains a short novel, a novella and three short stories. The novel, *The Three-Cornered Hat*, is Alarc贸n鈥檚 most famous work. It鈥檚 a fast-moving farce involving a pompous magistrate, a miller鈥檚 wife and various 鈥榯ypical鈥 Andalusian characters. There鈥檚 lots of mistaken identity and unexpected encounters in the dark. The novella, 鈥楥aptain Poison鈥, concerns the taming of a fierce contrarian after he is turned into a temporary invalid during a street battle. It is full of dry wit and probably the best piece in the book. The three short stories are all fine examples of their genre. If we regard these texts as reasonably accurate documents of their time and place, one thing that stands out strongly is how little Spanish society had progressed in Alarc贸n鈥檚 day (the late 19th Century) from the earlier era of Cervantes and the picaresque novel. The manners are just as formal, the corruption just as ingrained and inevitable, and the devotion to ideals of class just as implacable.
This story probably deserves four stars. I do not understand enough Spanish yet to have grasped enough of the novel for me to rate it there... yet. I liked it enough that I do plan to read it again, and am happy to have taken it up as a way to further my studies of the Spanish language.
The story itself receives many comparisons to Othello, and indeed, has several similarites to the Shakespeare play. The author even points this out within the text, so I will leave it at that.
The story has its own twists and turns that are fun, interesting, and easy to follow even for the most basic reader. The characters are endearing enough that you will find yourself holding your breath when they come in harms way, and laughing aloud when the true course of events is revealed.
A fun read, and again, one that I will read again.
Really, a wonderful story. I felt like I was reading a play and I was loving it. It feels like one of Shakespeare's comedies or a Cyranoesque fable. Fantastic, clever, funny. If you like stories, you'll love this.
I honestly enjoyed some parts, it was kinda funny and the lesson you get is actually not that bad, it was a school book but I don鈥檛 regret reading it, really cool
