When Betsy Edwards was enticed away from the Red Dragon pub by an elegant American, Emmy Court, who declared Betsy had psychic abilities and she wanted her tested, Betsy was excited. Working at the Sacred Grove New Age centre was all she'd dreamed about; meeting all the people involved made Betsy feel important. But when the director went missing from Sacred Grove, and Betsy saw where he was in a dream, she was horrified when it was true, and he was dead.

With two previous missing women connected to the Sacred Grove centre, Constable Evan Evans was suspicious. His superiors attended the centre, interviewing all staff while Evans kept in the background. But he knew something wasn't right about the place, and he also knew Betsy was in danger. Betsy declared she could look after herself but could she? Would Evans discover who the culprit was before it was too late?

is the 6th in the Constable Evans series by and I thoroughly enjoyed it, as I have the previous books. Just a lowly constable is Evan Evans, but he is very smart, solving the cases ahead of his superiors (much to their disgust) Fun and entertaining, I can highly recommend this series to fans of the genre!

Our sixth outing with Constable Evans. I am really enjoying this series!

Evan investigates a death and some missing girls and tries to keep Betsy out of trouble. And himself for that matter. There are lots of concerns about the nearby Sacred Grove New Age Centre and poor Bronwyn is very unwell with a mystery illness.

Everything is beautifully resolved by the end and Evan is lucky in his job and his love life. All is well in Llanfair - until the next book!

Getting a tad fed up with the protagonist's seeming inability to fend off ardent women. He's really coming off as a major simp in some of the books, but in this one for sure.

Otherwise a fun read.

And Evan Evans saves the day! This reads more like a superhero adventure story than a murder mystery with a “wannabe-detective village police constable just trying to “do his job and keep out of the investigation. Not nearly as good as some of the earlier books in this series.

Evans to Betsy by Rhys Bowen is the 6th book of the Constable Evan Evans mystery series set in contemporary Wales. Llanfair is a tiny mountain village; Evan Evans is the sole policeman. He is happy to live at a slower pace than in big cities, with the simple pleasure of hiking the mountains always at hand. He moves into a cottage on his own, as 'practice' for the life ahead with Bronwen. It's tough to leave his pampered life as a boarder, watched over and spoiled by his landlady, with her delicious hearty meals promptly served. Fending for himself proves to be a challenge. He vows to learn how to cook, and bravely prepares a meal for Bronwen.

Betsy, the barmaid of the village pub, considers Evan fair game now that he's on his own. But soon she's distracted by a stranger who enticed Betsy with exaggerated praise for her sixth sense from Celtic heritage. Betsy works at a posh resort where she does light housekeeping for a start, but supposedly will develop her paranormal talents later.

When a young American woman is reported missing, and clues lead to the posh resort, Evan comes to investigate. He senses there is something wrong with the business - it's too elaborate for so few guests; who's paying the bills? A body is discovered in a cave, the victim of murder. There are many suspects; the victim made enemies easily. Betsy helps Evan find evidence - which puts her in mortal danger. Meanwhile, Browen remains mysteriously ill, which makes Evan wonder if Betsy could really have powers over her romantic rival.

Light humorous entertainment, all loose ends resolved tidily by the end. A quick read; a fun series.

What a great book!!! I loved it!! The story of a cult, a few people disappearing and some found dead. Who is the culprit??

One of the best things about this book is that all the facts are being revealed as soon as the investigator, in this case Evans, is discovering them. So in the end we have the same facts as he does, no hidden surprises, no information that is just being share just in the end.

2020 bk 41. I'll admit - I was more concerned about Bronwyn's health through this book when the major concern probably should have been for Betsy and the 'con' artists at the newly created spa / new age / druid center. Things aren't right there. To top everything off - Evan's territory has been expanded and the spa is now in his balliwick. Argh. Good mystery - I didn't see the end coming until, well almost the end.

Love this series. Constable Evans gets involved yet again in another murder, this time in a New Age type resort where Betsy, (normally the bar maid), has gone to work, and improver her psychic powers. Look forward to another adventure of Constable Evans!

Having read a couple of the Royal books, I decided to give the Constable Evans series a try. This was a light mystery with some interesting characters and an enjoyable look at a small Welsh community. Generally the plot moved along at a good pace and the characters were pretty well-rounded. Evans came off as a bit weak but I suspect the author based him on men she has known who couldn't boil water or rebuff the advances of an attractive woman. Generally not bad and I may eventually try another.

I was glad to see that in this sixth installment of the Constable Evans series, Ms. Bowen managed to create a more interesting story than she did for volume five. Evans to Betsy shifts the story outside of the village of Llanfair but even with that, the concentration on local characters and their relationships with each other is front and center. Betsy the barmaid is the main subject in this book. We get to see her character fleshed out and moved away from the one-dimensional flirt she has been in previous books in the series. Her relationship with Constable Evans deepens in a more substantial way than just flirting. But, series followers don't need to worry. Evan and Bronwen's relationship grows substantially in this installment as well.

Evans to Betsy is an interesting mystery with good character growth that should appeal to Constable Evans fans. I recommend this book as well as the series.

MY RATING GUIDE: 3-3.5 Stars. A relaxing palate cleansing mystery, just edging more toward the “Silly (Janet Evanovich) than I prefer.
1= dnf/What was that?; 2= Nope, not for me; 3= THIS WAS OKAY/CUTE; 3.5= I ENJOYED THIS; 4= I liked it a lot; 5= I Loved it, it was great! (I seldom give 5 Stars).

EVANS TO BETSY is bk 6 in Rhys Bowen’s 10 bk Constable Evans Mysteries series.

Spring in the mountain village of Llanfair, Snowdonia, Wales, several months after bk5 ~ Constable Evan Evans, 30, transferred nearly 2yrs ago from an urban Investigation Unit position working the southern shipping docks area returning to the northern small mountain village of his youth, Llanfair. Evans transfer essentially traded the former prestige, danger and excitement of solving intercity crime for the routine and relative quietness of small village life after he witnessed the violent death of his father while completing an intercity drug case together. Life in Llanfair moves at a slower pace but Evan discovers quickly that murder and crime occur everywhere. In EVANS TO BETSY, due to budget cuts, Evan’s territory has been increased while his salary has not. Although he is provided a motorbike to help cover the increased area Evan isn’t thrilled yet thankful he still has employment in the mountains he loves. One of the villagers gets a job at a nearby religious retreat and soon afterward reports of missing persons and near fatal accidents dribble out. Are these mere rumors or is something or someone dangerous hiding at the commune? Evan investigates when a villager, Betsy, becomes involved.

Comments ~
1) EVANS TO BETSY is bk 6 in the series. This could be read as a Standalone mystery or out of order but the interactions and developments between Evan and the other characters/villagers from previous books would be missed.
2) A secondary character, Betsy from the village of Llanfair, plays a major role in EVANS TO BETSY. She is portrayed as (IMO) ridiculously naive, gullible and foolhardy. Betsy goes forward into dangerous ground while ignoring Constable Evans warnings (like the reckless teenage girl in Horror films). I wanted to slap some sense into her. I also thought the new characters for this book appeared as caricatures of real people - almost too incredible to believe. Both aforementioned elements made it difficult for me to get truly invested in the story. But I went along simply for the ride (I enjoy Constable Evans). The final chapters in EVANS TO BETSY did managed to recapture my attention as I waited to see how Evan would discover the culprit.
3) EVAN TO BETSY read very quickly and works well as a palate cleanser between darker/longer books or other genres. It wasn’t my favorite in this series but I plan to continue with the next title to see how Constable Evans fares on his new motorbike with his expanded territory. I’m not entirely sold on Bronwen being the woman for him. He appears too ambivalent to be serious to me. 😉

READER CAUTION ~
PROFANITY - Yes. Strong language is used but infrequently.
VIOLENCE - PG. Murder and violence occurs but it is not described in a dark or graphic manner.
SEXUAL SITUATIONS - None.

Alles fing unschuldig an.

Constable Evans has finally gotten his own place, having moved out on Mrs. Williams. Bronwyn gets very sick after Evans makes spaghetti for her at his new place. Evans remembers later that Betsy had visited while he was preparing the dinner. Evans has been assigned a police motorcycle.

An old mansion in a town nearby is turned into a new age healing center, Sacred Grove. A PhD student, Emmy Court, is wandering the countryside looking for candidates to be studied. She stops at the pub in Llanfair and convinces Betsy to come to the center. Betsy quit her job at the Red Dragon and moved into the center.

The other story is of a young American girl, Rebecca, doing a semester at Oxford who sent a note to her parents saying she’s going to go traveling and then disappears into Wales. She worked at Sacred Grove for about a week six months earlier.

The husband of the owner of the center is somewhat of a renowned psychic himself, Randy Wunderlich, is found dead in one of the caves off the beach. And it turns out to be murder. There are plenty of suspects: his wife, Lady Annabel, her son Michael, Emmy Court, Betsy, Any American he had swindled before he left for England, The in-house druid, Rhiannon, Lady Annabel‘s business manager, or Mrs. Roberts, the housekeeper who has worked for Lady Annabel since she was born.

While cleaning the steam room one day, someone locks Betsy in and turns it on. She is rescued by Michael and Bethan, one of the other young women working at the center.

The next day Bethann is locked into the steam room and dies.

Evans decides to look more closely into the disappearance of Rebecca. He goes to Oxford and talks to as many people as he can who might’ve known her. He learns that another woman had gone missing the previous year.

Betsy rescues herself from the murderer. She is the star of this story.

This had a slow start but a fine finish.

In recent times I’ve become a big consumer of audiobooks. I have to confess I usually have two on the go at once . There are my walking books which gives me motivation to go on a daily walk so I can find out what happens next and my bedtime book, usually lighter and less complex which I listen to in 15 minute increments so if I drift off to sleep I don’t have to back track too much. EVANS TO BETSY falls into the latter category.

Constable Evan Evans is responsible for the little village of Llanfair in the Snowdonia region of Wales where a good percentage of the population shares his name hence there is Evans the post and the butcher is Evans the meat among others. There are also two chapels in the village who take pot shots at each via conflicting bible passages on their respective notice boards. The pub is conveniently located behind chapel Bethel so the less committed church goers can sneak out of the service and into the pub largely undetected.

Betsy the barmaid is feeling overworked and underpaid and fed up with the cranky publican so she quits her job and finds another at a newly opened retreat which has a self proclaimed famous America psychic in residence. It also offers a practicing Druid along with the usual yoga and spa treatments. To Betsy is seems like there are a lot of employees for very few guests but she overlooks that in her enthusiasm when she is told by a visiting Academic studying the paranormal that she is almost certainly psychic. When the American psychic is found dead under strange circumstances Evan Evans decides this needs to be investigated.

The book is fun and entertaining and the narrator suits the story. Just the thing for bed tiny “reading

(3.5 stars) This is the 6th book in the series and I listened to the Audible version. An American research student comes into the pub and is looking for anyone with a history of psychic ability. Betsy talks to her about her family’s history of having the “sight and the woman talks Betsy into being tested for psychic abilities at the Sacred Grove resort. Separately, Constable Evans is looking into the disappearance of a young woman, last heard of heading down to the Sacred Grove. His patrol area has been expanded and he has been given a motorbike to help get him around. When Betsy’s boss doesn’t allow her to take time off for further testing, she quits and takes a job at the Sacred Grove. But when the Grove’s resident psychic goes missing, Betsy has a premonition and leads them to a body. Constable Evans begins to wonder if there is more going on than meets the eye and looks more deeply into the strange activities at the center and begins to unravel the mystery.

Rhys Bowen
KRIMINALROMAN

Betsy, a bar tender at the local pub wanted to date Evan. She is basically a friendly person who just wants more from life than pouring beers. So when a visiting American doing research on Welsh folk with spiritual insights shows up and tells her that she must have that ability to foresee the future, she is an easy target. Betsy gets a job at a new Spiritual Center. When Evan appears to visit the site (and to check up on Betsy), he finds himself involved in a mystery: where has the dynamic and charismatic leader disappeared to? Then Betsy's power provides a dream clue to his whereabouts; she is right, but that only ups the ante when they find his dead body.

Scams that started across the Atlantic and so fleeing the American justice system... the culprits went to England and drove further until they settled on the perfect place to execute their schemes ~ Llanfair. On the Red Dragon was Betsy the perfect patsy. It so happened that there was also a missing American girl... a serious violinist who had a study~stint in Oxford then went to work at a New Age healing center called the Secret Grove and then disappeared. The Grove would be where Evan and Betsy would end up... and both would soon find out that Strange would be really Deadly... though not without its humorous and sometimes embarrassing moments and Mrs. Powell~Jones could be relied upon to ever be the constant irritant with her complaints.

Having switched most of my reading by Rhys Bowen to her newer series featuring Lady Georgiana Rannoch (Her Royal Spyness), I had put this 20-ish-year-old series to the side. I picked up this next book in the series and am charmed anew at Constable Evans and his Welsh town. It's light reading (probably lighter than Her Royal Spyness) and a great no thinking required read. Although the murderer in this offering was pretty apparent early on , it still was entertaining.

My favorite so far!! More murders than usual and Evan, with the help of Betsy, solves them. I love this little village!!
There is FINALLY a proposal, perhaps a promotion and more. There is one funny thing in the beginning, an American comes to town and sees the billboards of the opposing churches and thinks it is funny that they have contradictory Bible phrases, when that is the purpose. Also, this book has the best title in the series. On to the next. Can I finish 200 pages before midnight for my last book of the year??

Good story, not sure I got quite as much out of it as I should have. I had thought after reading the first book in this series that I could reading the remaining ones out of order without it hurting anything, but I think I must have missed some back story by jumping into book number six. So it's back to the library to try and obtain numbers two and three and then we'll see. This one was fun nevertheless.

Barmaid Betsy is told she is psychic.

Our kind but naive barmaid is convinced by an American she is psychic. She is off working and training at the strange New Age Clinic.
Of course her crush Constable Evans gets involved when he searches for a missing college student and suspects things at the clinic are not what they appear.
We find that Betsy may be naive but this time, she is sharper than anyone realized.

Not bad but not my favourite in the series. I liked the tying together of several incidents over time, all leading to the same culprit. I continue to enjoy the setting and the character development in this series. I was, however, disappointed with Evan's behaviour towards Betsy in this one, and his rather ridiculous "Oh dear I'm a single man and can't cook" attitude. Really, it was a bit much. I hope he can pull himself together for the next one!
