Jumping jackdaws! 'A Sprinkle of Sorcery' by Michelle Harrison is THE perfect recipe for an exciting, action-packed sequel that not only honours the wonderful world that was built in 'A Pinch of Magic', but wondrously surpasses it in every way conceivable.

I am so happy with how quickly we are thrust back into the world of the Widdershins sisters. I've missed Fliss, Betty and Charlie and everything that makes them unique from one another. Right from the first couple of chapters, we already have our adventure unfolding, with Harrison wasting no time to welcome us back to the oft-times magical but sinister Crowstone. Beautiful prose coupled with character spirit and I knew from the off that I was going to have an adventure myself reading this. And oh, what a wave of emotions I went through by the time I reached the end!

No spoilers (this is in the synopsis pretty much) - Charlie is kidnapped and taken away from her sisters, forcing Fliss and Betty to hop into their trusted boat The Travelling Bag and save her. Not only that, but we have a mysterious girl with them, as well as an eerie will-o-the-wisp, opening up this universe that Harrison has crafted even more, making me hope beyond all hope that we will see more from this world in the future! I especially enjoyed the Crowstone Chronicles, adding a folklorish feel to the story that was already unravelling.

I loved the adventure that the sisters have to undertake, made even more real by the atmospheric prose, genuinely terrifying me at points in the story. There are moments when I felt scared for character outcomes and I was never able to predict exactly where the story would take us. Fortunately, the tense atmosphere would sometimes be alleviated by funny retorts from all three sisters, not just Betty (though she still remains to be the funniest to me). Their dynamic is so genuine and heartfelt that it's hard not to feel worried when they are scared, and excited when they hit crucial points on their adventure.

The characters have to be my favourite part of the story and the lessons they learn - because we learn them too. It's so heartwarming to see their growth. I hope any child (or adult!) reading this will learn something from the Widdershins, especially if they have siblings, because wow how I wish I had this book when I was younger, suffering as the middle child. It might have taught my siblings (and fair enough, me) a thing or two. Also, I went through the entire novel thinking I'm a Betty, only to realise I'm more the Crone. Ah, I loved this so much, and I'm gutted my journey with this story is over.

'A Sprinkle of Sorcery' has the sisterly bond of 'Frozen' and the swashbuckling adventure of 'The Goonies', making this follow-up more than just a sprinkle of sorcery - it's a stream of sensational storytelling at its best. And fortunately, it was never anything less than its best.

This is a Magical Middle Grade book, and this is the second book in A Pinch of Magic series. I have not read the first book in this book series, but I did not feel lost. I fall in love with these characters fast, and the characters where very developed. The storyline was so great, and it made you want to keep reading. This book had me guessing what was going to happen while I was reading it. This was a fun and magical story with great characters that have so many different personalist. I feel this book would be great for 10 years old to adults, and I really think that this is a middle grade book that adults would also really enjoyed. Also, the cover of this book is so pretty. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher (Simon & Schuster Children's UK) or author (Michelle Harrison) via NetGalley, so I can give honest review about how I feel about this book. I want to send a big Thank you to them for that.

Oh how I love Michelle Harrison's writing! It was so easy to fall back into the world of the Widdershin sisters. This one takes on a pirate theme, a quest to find a missing sister proving full of mishaps and adventure.

I loved seeing the expansion of the world in this one. With the first being centred on a small group of islands, opening the book to find new islands on the map proved exciting to see. That sense of adventure in Betty's personality proves infectious when stories of these mysterious islands nudge their way into the book, and it doesn't take long for the intrigue to take over. I found myself flipping the pages with no problem at all, eager to find out how the stories of these new islands could possibly tie into the Widdershin's story.

And I loooooved the folklore elements, once again. The addition of the will-o-the-wisp folklore was one I absolutely adored, the folklore surrounding that being integrated wonderfully into the story. The new fable of the three brothers felt effortlessly fairytalesque, the magic and whimsy balancing out the darker side of the story - and the "moral to the story" being learned, of course. The whole idea of getting through an adventure based on the lessons learned from folklore and history is just one I love, and I hope it continues into book 3.

My only reason for rating this slightly lower than the first is the pirate/voyage theme. For some reason I just lose interest quicker when it comes to pirate stories. I still very much enjoyed the book, but the scenes with the pirate crew as "the problem" just didn't quite live up to my love for the first book. Something about them just didn't feel all that dangerous, so the tension was harder for me to gage. Still, for most of the book I enjoyed the adventure of discovering new elements to the story, and can't wait to see where it goes from here.

Love this author and series so much! I definitely enjoyed the first book and gave it 4 stars, but I thought the second book was really good and it got bog 5 stars.
This series is about 3 sisters who learn they are witches and they can do some magic. They live with their grandma. In the second one, we start where we left off. It starts really fast getting into another mysterious/dangerous adventure in the first few pages.

This book had a lot of nice content for kids: Hope, adventure, sisterhood, magic, some piracy, kindness, bravery, and a puzzle to solve. I thought it's an excellent book for them to learn and adopt nice behaviors. It's definitely fun and nice to read for adults too. I enjoyed it immensely.

If you enjoy reading middle-grade books, I highly recommend these books.

3.5 stars.

The Widdershins sisters are back for another high seas adventure with buried treasure, witches and kidnapping. When Charlie meets a runaway girl from the island of Torment who is followed by a mysterious Will o' the Wisp, she draws her sisters into a hunt for a forbidden and forgotten island to help clear her name.

Just like , the familial relationship is the highlight for me in these books. Fliss, Betty and Charlie share such a special bond that exudes warmth and love in everything they do. They would go to the ends of the earth for each other, and sacrifice everything in between to keep each other safe. They definitely get this from Granny Widdershins, who is by far my favourite character. She's tough as old boots, fond of the drink and isn't above a bit of smuggling for a profit, but she loves her granddaughters with all her heart.

I also liked the introduction of some new secondary characters, mainly Willow the strange little girl with the gift to sing to Wisps and Spit, the orphaned pirate. Both struggle with their morals and doing the right thing, especially Spit, and go through a lot of character development by the end of the story. And not forgetting Bandit. I love that mean little cat.

The plot is quite formulaic and struggles to get off the ground at first, but there are certain scenes which I found particularly atmospheric and tension filled. The world building is pretty good, and I loved the inclusion of folk and fairy tales as a plot device. It added some much needed depth to the text. I will say that I found the ending a little abrupt, and thought that a lot of the lesser plot points fizzle out without any answers - such as what happened to Spot's parents and if anyone ever deals with the pirates wisps at the shipwreck. Howeverz all together this was a very enjoyable read.

A really fun and magical story.
Still love the Widdershins, Charlie is still my favourite shes just so mischievous and brave. Her reactions always make me smile.
I think I preferred this one slightly more over a pinch of magic, but I think that's only from the setting, this had alot more of the sea in it and I was really intrigued by one of the characters but I won't say anything else!
Really looking forward to the next book in the series 😄

I don't want to sound like I have a shorter attention span than a tween, but like...this went on too long.

I did really like being back with this family, and the sisters are all still great characters. I appreciate that Harrison gives the three of them very distinct personalities and voices, and that the reader comes to know them and their strengths and behaviors as well as you might with your own family or friends. I also like how closely bonded they are, and the love and support they show for each other, and their father and grandmother. Willow was also a very interesting side character to bring in, and I thought the author did a good job of slowly letting the reader learn who she is and what's going on with her.

I also thought the initial conflict which sets the events of the plot in motion was very well done, and it made total sense that the girls wouldn't realize what was actually going on, especially since they would have been so scared in the moment. I do wish that the conflict didn't involve Charlie being in danger again, because it's kind of odd to have the same thing happen in two books, even if the details around it are totally different.

And while I always like a little adventure in my MG fantasy books, I just felt like this was so drawn out! I really wonder if kids in the target age range would be able to stay absorbed in the story once they get to the sunken ship, because it feels like the plot just ground to a halt. It takes so long for things to move on from there, and there were numerous times where it felt like a conversation that could have taken a few paragraphs instead goes on for a few pages. I also struggled to picture what was happening with the ship and Betty's explorations and the bad guys. It just wasn't explained well enough IMO for me to fully picture it.

I did have fun with it and will read the next one, but this felt like a bit of middle-book syndrome.

I adore this series! My favourite thing each of the books do is weave a fairytale throughout the story that does eventually intertwine with the main plot. This book, like the first book, was whimsical, adventurous & featured a heartwarming familial relationship between the three sisters. All elements I love to see in middle-grade books! However, I did enjoy this book slightly less than book one. I am not entirely sure why...it might have been because there wasn't as much mystery in this book compared to the first? Still, it was a lovely sequel & I am looking forward to reading the next book when it is released.

Book #7 for ! I've earned myself The Shadow with this, as the book was published in 2020.

I actually enjoyed this one much more than the first installment! I think it took me the whole of the first book to really get used to and connect with the characters, so with this one, I could enjoy the adventure and intrigue a bit more. Really looking forward to the third one!

This book had me on the edge of my seat, the high stakes of this series always has me needing to know what it going to happen. I enjoyed this even more than a pinch of magic.

I did not see the twist of this book even though when I read it I was like duh. If myself a thirty year old woman could not see it coming I am shocked the target audience would and that is what makes this book great. Because it is not obvious it makes you think about it.

The characters build in this it makes you feel for each of them and make you want to make sure that they get back to where they are meant to be. I feel that I am going to want to keep Charlie safe at all cost, she is a sweetheart and has such wonderment that reminds me of my own nieces.

I cannot wait for the next instalment because I feel that these sisters are going to keep with me for a long time.

I honestly don’t know if I like this one or the 1st better! They’re both so amazing! You sometimes get worried about the 2nd book in a series, & how it will do/compare. I knew by reading all her other MG books before these I had nothing to worry about. Boy was I right! I haven’t been able to find out how many more are going to be in this series, or if there are even going to be any more...I sure hope so. I love these sisters, granny, the people they encounter along the way, & even that rat, so much! Lol These were the March reads for #middlegrademonthly hosted by @gavgav7 & @jadeyraereads I HIGHLY recommend! Not only these 2 books, but everything by her period! I wish I had 100 more of her books to read. Ok I’ll stop now lol 😆💜

Read- January 2021 for Polarthon (Team Walrus-Cold Waters)
- I thought I was going to enjoy this book but I didn't think I would love it as much as I loved the first one. I was very much mistaken on that front, I loved it even more.

1st Re-Read- September 2021 for Bookoplathon and #FantasyFallReads
- I wasn't sure if I was going to re-read the last two books in this series after I had re-read the first one but I just couldn't resist even though I literally only read these books 7 months ago. I think this will always be my favourite installment in this series.

Another fun, charming, middle-grade book. Though I liked it a little bit less than the first one. I think the plot was a bit weaker and the side characters didn't grip me as much. I did enjoy it, though! I'll probably check out the other books in the series, but maybe I'll wait a bit until I'm more in the mood to read them.

Book two for the Widdershin Sisters! Jumping Jackdaws!!!

A Sprinkle Of Sorcery continues on from A Pinch of Magic, and this time follows another witchy legend, full of pirates, treasure, grumpy cats and mayhem.

Meddling Magpies! Betty, Fliss and Charlie (and little Hoppit too!) Find themselves in even more trouble during this Book, but their sisterly strength and spirit keeps them strong and determined. With their pinch of magic and their terrible luck... What could possibly go wrong?!

Again the writing sweeps you back up into the Widdershins magical world. I feel like Crowstone is my second home now! I can almost imagine myself walking through the doors of the Poacher's Pocket and having Granny shout at me!

The beginning of the story starts off with the Widdershin family trying to sell their run down but loveable and homely pub/home, the Poacher's Pocket. When mysterious strangers show up, the trouble begins and another adventure is about to begin.

I was hooked from the start but I found the action slowed a little in the middle, but then picked up at the end, and left me wanting to read more, and return to The Sorrow Isles!

Overall, utterly captivating, and way more than just a Sprinkle of Sorcery, a whole spell book full of Sorcery, is more like it.

I cannot wait for book number 3!!!

Book one having such a satisfying ending, I didn't quite see the need for the sequel. But actually, it is even better than the first book.

This was such an exciting adventure story, with also had a lot of heart and emotional impact. We once again follow the Whiddershin sisters, joined by the mysterious girl Willow. Later on we are also joined by pirate boy Spit, and the dynamics between these five characters is an absolute joy to read about.

The atmosphere and tension created by the excellent writing are spot on, and exactly what I look for in my middle grade books. Things aren't simplified, too convenient or glanced over for the 'benefit' of its younger audience. It deals with some heavy topics , the stakes are high and there are some hard hitting and emotional moments for sure.

With the curse broken the girls can go wherever they want, and Harrison doesn't miss this chance to extent and show us the world, and takes us on a great adventure with pirates, wisps, legends and mysterious islands. We are guided through it all by the bright sisterly love, and along the way get some great messages on trust, love and strength.

I would give this a very high 4* rating. I had a great time with it and already cannot wait to see what the sisters get up to next.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for gifting me with the e-ARC of this book. I also reviewed the first book last year so you can check that out on my blog/ŷ.
I loved the first book in this series so had pretty high expectations for this book, the Widdershins sisters had such an amazing adventure in A Pinch of Magic, so I was excited to see what adventure they have in this book.

I love the bond that Betty, Fliss and Charlie have, I loved seeing them meet and take in Willow and help her on her own quest, and they meet a a pirate called Spit - the relationships they have between the five of them is brilliant. Also Charlie never fails to make me laugh, she's such a typical kid, asking obvious questions and I love it. At the end of book one the curse is broken so the sisters can now safely leave their island for adventures, and they have a brilliant adventure in this book, which involves pirates, wisps, a mysterious girl and a hidden island. As much as I enjoyed the first book, I was a lot more gripped and on the edge of my seat for this book, and the twist near the end had me sobbing, I did not see it coming at all.

I would definitely recommend this series, they're such light hearted middle grade books and (even though I cried) they make me so happy. I cannot wait for the third installment of the series to be released next year.

3'5/5

8.29 using the CAWPILE rating system.

Fliss, Betty and Charlie go on an adventure again to help an escaped prisoner using magic, their imagination and old folk tales to help everyone. They encounter pirates and witches.

Michelle Harrison has provided whimsy again and I loved it such a good second book and I’m excited to carry on with the series.
