Murder in a model house! Forget watching TV! Tonya’s books have everything you need! Quirky lovable characters, a beautiful town and park you’ll want to visit, and a murder! You can’t find entertainment this good anywhere on television! There’s a swanky new housing development going up. Mae and the Laundry Club Ladies are worried about their Daniel Boone National park losing what makes it special with all of this development. Economic growth is important for Normal, but too much growth might take away the small town feel that everyone loves! Mae, Ava, and the gang go to check out one of the new model homes and find more than they were hoping. The realtor for the development, Chelsea, is dead. Was it an accident or murder? Is it related to the National Park Committee in some way? A random killer or something more? On top of the murder, Mae and the Ladies need to solve this one quickly because Hank’s job might be on the line! There are so many suspects for Hank, Mae, and the Laundry Club Gals to sort through and this one needs to be solved quickly! This books start with a bang and the pace keeps it up to the very last page. As Dottie would say, dadgummit, I was wrong again when it came to this whodunnit! I loved the long list of suspects and trying to figure it all out! Not only was I totally shocked with the big reveal but also hanging onto that last few sentences until the next book! Mae’s story continues to capture my imagination and I am always sad to reach the last page but excited about the next adventure. There are definitely some big things coming! *I voluntarily read an advanced copy of this book. I am not required to leave a review. The comments and opinions expressed are strictly my own.*
So much happens in this book that some of it is continued to the next book. Even though I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, I usually don’t like having to wait on the next book to see how it all turns out. (At least the murder gets solved!) This is one of the few authors whose books I love so much that I will gladly and happily wait for the next book in this series.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.
"Paddlers, Promises & Poison" the 16th instalment in the "Camper & Criminals Mystery series by Tonya Kappes. I love this series, can’t get enough of Mae West and the Laundry Club Ladies.
I really enjoyed this instalment in the Camper & Criminals Cozy Mystery series. I love Mae and the small town of Normal Kentucky. What a great escape, it’s like visiting old friends or family for a few hours.
This mystery had a few suspects with a motive but which one is the killer ... There were just enough twists and turns to keep you engrossed in the story. But that ending!!! I was like WHAT... I’m on the edge of my seat here and now Book 17 can’t come out fast enough!
If your looking for a fun, southern mystery then this is your book!
I requested and received an Advance Reader Copy of this book from the publisher. All thoughts and opinions are my OWN.

Review:
Whenever I read about Mae and her friends, I know I am in for a fun time. Even if they are solving a murder, there is always plenty to chuckle about. Mae and her gang continue to sleuth and gossip, and that is part of their charm.
The writing style flows smoothly and it defines the characters very well by their actions and words. The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and these descriptions put pictures in my mind’s eye about what was happening to Mae and her friends. The mystery was well plotted and with a lot of clues to sift through, suspects to consider and red herrings to consider. I was not sure of the killer until the reveal at the end.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. Stop in Normal, Kentucky, sit a spell and enjoy the read.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book and provided my honest review.
Welcome to Spring, especially at Happy Trails campground in Normal, Kentucky, in the Daniel Boone National Park! I love how enthusiastic Mae is about life in general, even more so about Spring and sunrises! In some ways her polar opposite, I also love the grumpy, pink-foam-curler lady, Dottie, and what they call her Dottie-isms. Visiting Happy Trails is like going to a home away from home, especially Mae, Dottie and the rest of the Laundry Club ladies. The author shows her love of Kentucky in her descriptions. I could even see Mae’s adoptive mother, Mary Elizabeth, reading her hens a bedtime story wearing her pearls! This time we have a mystery so complex that the ladies are ready to give up.
The ladies are visiting Ava, Mae’s attorney from the past who recently moved to Normal. Mae came to see if the stream behind Ava’s home meets any hiking trails that the park committee to recommend for visitor use. The ladies noticed the development of high-end homes going in across from Ava, a recent change. New homes are rarely approved due to risks to the environment.
Some of the ladies want to see the model home, as the realtor, Chelsea, has a lot of people going through it. Beck, son of the neighborhood information distributor aka gossip maven, tells them that the model home is an eyesore and the homes include marble, hardwood floors, two ovens in the kitchens. He fanned the flames of the ladies desire to see it, but they will wait until the couple in there leave. They had watched Darby, Beck’s mother, give her famous sweet tea to Chelsea, even though Beck said Chelsea doesn’t like sweet tea.
After the visitors left, Ava and the ladies went to see the model. Within minutes, it is clear they are not going to paddleboard down the brook behind Ava’s home. Chelsea was dead, whether by accident or otherwise, as they see where her head hit the table.
Adding to the drama is learning that Hank’s job is oi the line. Things are going on behind the scenes in Normal, something between the mayor, the judge, the developer of the housing community, and their friend, Sheriff Jerry Truman. They will go to any length to accommodate the influx of new residents in this election year, but if Hank is no longer the detective, where will he go? What will Mae do without him?
Mae, Dottie, and the rest of the Laundry Club ladies are on the case, talking to everybody from the staff at the judge’s mansion to the son of Ava’s gossip maven. Does this sound like anyone you’ve known before? . . . was like a regular old tape recorder. I just had to push the button and off he rolled. I’ll bet the laundry club ladies wish everybody would spill the beans this easily!
There are several potential whodunits but getting to the bottom of the murder isn’t happening as fast as they would like. With Hank’s job on the line, he welcomes all the help he can get from Mae and her friends a first! There are many surprises before they arrive at the shocking conclusion! The real whodunit is not someone I had considered! I highly recommend this latest novel in the Campers and Criminals series to those who enjoy sassy Southern women, camping, and well-plotted cozy mysteries!
From a thankful heart: I received an eARC of this novel, and this is my honest review.
Oh my goodness! Author Tonya Kappes knows how to entertain her readers and keep them coming back for more. This installment of A Camper and Criminals is now my new favorite in the series. The book is full of quirky characters, southern charm, adorable pets, and loyal friends. The mystery is full of twists and turns to keep you guessing. The secondary stories are just as suspenseful as the main mystery. The ending........Oh My, the next one can't come out fast enough!
All thoughts and opinions are my own, and in no way have I been influenced by anyone.
As Mae's friend Betts said, "Laundry Club Ladies, it's time to put our sleuthing caps on and figure out exactly what happened "
Mae and the LCL discover the body of a realtor, who is selling new homes in Normal.
Things seem to be snowballing, Hank's job may be on the line, the possible corruption amongst the political officials, Normal is growing at lighting speed, and to top it off Mae is not sure of her true standing with Hank!
However the most important thing is to find the killer. This time Mae had a good reason to be nosey and that reason was Hank Sharp! She figured helpng him, would help him keep his job.. There are plenty of people with possible motives, but who really did the deed?
With red herrings, sending the reader in plenty of directions, the real culprit will surprise you!
The last chapter leaves you with quite the cliffhanger about what will be going on next in Mae's life.
Back on the audio and having a much better time *despite* finding Mae’s head in the sand approach to dealing with the fact that her future plans and Hank’s future plans might not completely align rather irritating. Kind of feel like they are heading for a break up (but not a permanent one). The murder mystery was excellent as always, Mae’s knowledge of designer handbags came in useful.
Excited to say I’ve reached the halfway point of this series!
Welcome back to Normal, Ken-tucky! There are all kinds of new developments going on here. The one you would normally build to live in as well. But the community is in a uproar of the dirty dealing and politics. Who will be affected by these new budget cuts? Mae and the Laundry Club Ladies have their work cut out for them. Is Bobby Ray considering marriage? Hank is willingly letting Mae and the Ladies help in this case. What is going on in Normal? There is a dead body in the model house? What’s her link to the major and the Park Committee? But who is this strange lady, That just walked in the Milkery she seems to know Mary Elizabeth? And Mae by some chance?? Stop on by ya’ll pull up a stool at the Normal Cafe because life just got a little more interesting in Normal!
Paddlers, Promises, and Poison by Tonya Kappes is the 16th A Camper & Criminals Cozy Mystery. We return to Normal, Kentucky where Mae West and her friends are in an uproar over homes being built on land from the Daniel Boone National Park. It has already begun affecting the habits of the local wildlife. When the realtor of the development is found dead (by Mae of course), the Laundry Club Ladies have a new case. I always enjoy visiting Normal with its charming shops, the gorgeous scenery of the Daniel Boone National Park, the cozy Happy Trials Campground, and its quirky residents. Tonya Kappes has an engaging writing style. It draws the reader right into the story and holds onto them until the very last page. Paddlers, Promises, and Poison went by quickly thanks to its quick pace. The whodunit has several good suspects, a red herring, and subtle clues. We are left with some unanswered questions at the end regarding a couple of items that I hope that author will address in Insects, Ivy, and Investigations. There is humor sprinkled throughout the story that had me laughing. I just love the Southernisms, especially Dottie’s. There is some good news for some people close to Mae. I just love how Mae helped them out. The ending left me wondering what is going to happen in the next book. I would say more, but I do not want to spoil this charming tale for you. Paddlers, Promises, and Poison is delightful Southern cozy mystery with Southern sweet tea, housing hubbub, a job in jeopardy, a puzzling poisoning, unjust government, and relationship queries.
I adore the Camper series because it's cute and makes for a truly fun reading experience. I find the corresponding audiobooks are a real delight to listen to and recommend increasing the playback speed if you find the southern drawl too slow. I’d suggest trying the playback somewhere between 1.10 and 1.25 and tweaking from there. Printed and electronic copies have access to bonus content that isn't available if you are using the Libby app, so that is the only drawback from the audio version.
As I make my way through the series, I’m finding that subsequent books are really showcasing the author's growth as a writer. There’s no need to read the series in order, but as the books evolve, so do the characters, and there are events you might not want advance knowledge of. That said, reading out of order won’t spoil the actual mystery that the characters are trying to resolve, so there is no danger of that happening.
Back in Normal Kentucky, with Mae and her Laundry Club Ladies, is one of my most favorite places to be. The small town life and laid back attitude is perfect. As perfect as life can be when a murder happens in this quiet little town. With this being the 16th installment in the series, there have been several murders. No fear, Mae and her team are on the case!
I really enjoyed this installment as it alluded to a few things that might be happening in the futurel Once again, Tonya Kappes, uses her wonderful storytelling skills to keep me interested and turning the page. Several times I thought I had figured it out, only to find I was wrong. This book had more twists and turns than the Kentucky River!
Oh my word! The ending! I cannot wait to read the next book! I recieved an advanced copy per my request. All opinions are my own.
PREMISE: Rumors are swirling around about the Sheriff’s department doing some outsourcing and Hank’s job is one of them. Mae finds herself at a crossroads, does she put on her sleuthing cap to help out a friend who is the number one suspect on Hank’s list, or does she let Hank solve the murder by himself so he can prove how valuable his position is to the department?
THOUGHTS: I liked this one and definitely feel like these books are back into an upward swing. The mystery wasn't memorable for me, but there were several character moments that I really appreciated. Eg moments between Bobby-Rae and Mae, as well as Mae and her adopted mother. Intrigued to see what happens with Hank in the next one and this book left on quite the cliff hanger too!
"Paddlers, Promises, & Promises (Camper & Criminals #16)" by Tonya Kappes picks up a little after the events of book 15 where Mae got answers about the fire that took her childhood home and birth family. She seems to have picked herself right up with no real emotional side effects anymore. Now it's Hank's turn to have a dilemma that he actually lets Mae help with.
The realtor of a big housing development trying to establish a foothold in Normal is found poisoned. She has lots of people she's made mad at her lately. Mae and Hank suspect that his job may be on the line if the new deputy the mayor insisted be hired solves the case first. Turns out there is some possible political corruption also going on around town.
This newest book in this series is as good as all the rest. I love that all the quirky characters are still all here and quirky. Loved that we learned about more of the citizens of the town. I am so looking forward to reading the the next book in the series to learn more about what happened right at the end. Remember to read these from book one fir two reasons. These are all great stories and you get to know more and more about each character with each book. I received a copy of this book from the author for a fair and honest opinion that I gave of my own free will.
Every visit to Normal, KY, is so much fun especially when you get to spend time at Happy Trails Campground with Mae West and her friends. The mysteries are always well constructed with just enough clues to keep you guessing but what really makes this series special is the friendships between the women and the wonderful community they’ve created. I can’t wait for the next one.
3⭐️ The Mae West stories are cozy mysteries that are just fun to read (listen) and do a decent job of keeping you guessing as to “who done it. This time, there is a housing expansion going on and there are some people who are not quite happy. The real estate agent winds up dead and the laundry club ladies are on the case.
This was a good read. Mae finds a dead body. Now her and her friends try to figure out who did it. Of course they solve it. However, someone shows up at the end and they clearly don't like Mae. Now in the next book we should see why.
The folks of Normal, Kentucky are not too happy with the all the development that is happening in their town. The growth is causing longer lines for permits and government business. When the local real estate agent is found dead there are a number of folks it could be. Hank’s job may be on the line which is making Mae anxious to get this one solved. A woman from Mary Elizabeth’s past shows up at the end. Curious how she will fit in.
This is a more complex story than many in the series. This mystery is excellent with many red herrings and the usual surprise ending that I don’t see coming.
The wonderful characters are all here but circumstances for the town of Normal and several of the main characters seem to be on the verge of change. This feels like a transition book. I am really looking forward to see what comes next.
It's amazing how much Normal has changed since Mae West arrived. The city is growing. A new housing development is being built. A murder is committed and the Laundry Club Ladies are on it. This time Hank is asking for Mae's help. His job is on the line.
There is never a dull moment in Normal. I'm looking forward to the next adventure.
When Dawn was first introduced to the story she was a pastry chef from Chicago and best friend to Nora Dawn an author who was killed. Now she’s from New York and was said author’s assistant?
