A totally delightful picture book! Santa is feeling his age: his wrinkles are more wrinkly; his belly more jelly than jolly; and he simply aches all over. So for the first time ever, Santa makes a Christmas wish. This is an absolutely hilarious story filled with plenty of laugh out loud elf / baby humor. Young readers will love all the behind the scenes descriptions of Santa's activities and readers of all ages will love the wonder of Christmas magic. Add this to your list of Christmas picture book classics!
I always try and pick up a new Holiday book for my kids. I found my one book for the Holidays season. Santa Baby is great for all ages, old and young. Santa is feeling his age and makes a Christmas wish to be young again so much that he becomes a baby. Will Christmas be canceled this year? Can a little girl he meets help him see the beauty and wonder of Christmas again?
In Santa Baby, readers are introduced to dear old Santa Claus preparing for another round of Christmas. Unfortunately, for Santa, the emphasis these days is on the old. It is understandable that he should feel a bit ancient after being "Santa for hundreds and hundreds of years". But this year, things just don't feel right. Santa's wrinkles are "more wrinkly", and his belly "less jolly and more...jelly", and tasks are harder than ever to accomplish. So, in an exhausted state, Santa calls "upon the magic of Christmas" to "make [him] young again". The magic ends up turning Santa back into a...baby! And when the elves discover this alarming change, there is a wee bit of panic: how are they to carry on with plans for Christmas when Santa can only "ga-ga goo-goo", eat paper lists, and yell NO! to going down chimneys? In the spirit of keeping the ending under (Christmas) wraps, I will just say that Santa Baby is a wonderful, genuinely funny and altogether heartwarming new Christmas release. A deceptively simple concept, when executed well, makes for terrific picture book material, and with Heather Fox's adorably merry, can't-resist illustrations of Santa and his adventures and Jonathan Stutzman's enchantingly giggly and sweet storytelling, Santa Baby is absolutely perfect holiday fare.
I received a copy of this title courtesy of Raincoast Books in exchange for an honest review. All opinions and comments are my own.
Autumn does not officially arrive until Tuesday, September 22, 2020, one week from today, yet people's thoughts have been turning to the solace found during December holidays as evidenced by the #Lightsforlife hashtag on social media in March of this year. Lights and holiday decorations appeared outside homes to spread cheer and support for others during this pandemic. In times of darkness people seek the opposite, they hope for the opposite.
A trio of Christmas titles, two last week, and one today, are contributing to the comfort. Each one tells a different story, but each presents the magical merriment found during this season.
In a worst-case scenario, the old saying, dating back to Aesop, referring to wishes and their results, has come true for none other than Santa Claus. Activity at the North Pole, mere days before Christmas, has come to a screeching halt. All the elves are in a tizzy. Santa Baby (Henry Holt And Company, September 8, 2020) written by Jonathan Stutzman with illustrations by Heather Fox explains exactly what happens when wishes are granted in an extraordinary manner.
An old and achy Santa calls on the Christmas magic to make him young again. And it does... TOO young. It turns him into a baby, and now he and the elves must figure out how to ensure children around the world will still get their presents on schedule. But how will baby Santa ever get all those presents delivered when he can't even talk yet?
This one created very mixed feelings. The idea was hilarious and much of the execution was also. The illustrations are comical and both children and adults will enjoy seeing the elves try to figure out how to help a very determined baby. However, the writing is mediocre, at best. Santa seems to bounce back and forth between being an infant and being an adult trapped in an infant's body, and the book frequently has the feel of the overly expository "tell-don't-show" writing. The ending was disappointing; it felt saccharine, tacked on, and victim of the ubiquitous "Love conquers all" trope, along with the logical flaw of Santa not being able to simply wish himself back to normal, albeit healthier. The book will get a laugh and is fine for filler content, but is better checked out from the library than purchased. Two stars.
Santa is feeling older than usual, which checks out because he鈥檚 been Santa for hundreds of years. So he makes a wish to be younger. Unfortunately, it backfires and Santa turns into a baby (as you can guess from the title).
As a baby, Santa can鈥檛 manage to do any Santa-like things. He can鈥檛 drive the sleigh, he won鈥檛 go down chimneys, and all that comes out when he tries to 鈥渉o ho ho鈥 is 鈥済oo-goo ga-ga.鈥
Will Christmas be canceled? Will Santa ever be Santa again? Not to worry, Christmas will be saved!
I really enjoyed this funny Santa story and the detailed illustrations. It鈥檚 a great pick to read for Christmastime.
I love an original tale and this is certainly original. Santa Claus is feeling especially tired and achy one Christmas so he makes a Christmas wish to become young again. Unfortunately, the magic goes a little too far and turns him back into a baby. A baby who can only babble, can't fly a sleigh, and would rather chew the list than check it. Clever, funny, and still full of Christmas spirit, this is a great Christmas picture book for families who like a little quirky laugh with their traditions.
When Santa's wish goes horribly wrong, he turns himself into a baby. As the elves scramble to fix things, they fear that Christmas may be doomed.
Little ones will laugh-out-loud as they read, Santa Baby. With Santa not even able to say Ho, Ho, Ho everyone fears the worst. All Santa wants to do is yell; NO, open the gifts, eat his naughty and nice list, and instead of filling stockings, he fills his diaper. Will the elves be able to turn Santa back before the big day? Santa Baby is the perfect read for any family with a baby sibling or wants a hilarious new holiday read.
Santa has a problem. He's getting old. ReAlLy old. His belly is feeling less jolly and more...jelly. So he calls upon the spirit of Christmas and wishes to be younger. And it works! ...too well. Santa turned himself into a baby and the elves are FREAKING OUT! Will Santa be able to goo-goo-ga-ga his way to the sleigh? Or will Christmas be ruined?
This is such an amazing Christmas book - my mom and I laugh every time we read it! The illustrations are beautiful, too!

This was a new holiday release this year (2020) that was getting quite a bit of attention but I have to admit being really underwhelmed when I finally read it. I thought the story was strange and not very engaging. I read it out loud to my 7-year old at bedtime one night and she was soundly asleep before we reached the end which isn't typical of her. It's silly but not memorable.
Fun sweet story of Santa who realizes as he is getting old he just wants to be made young again to make Christmas "easier". His wish is granted and he turns into a baby which poses all kinds of funny problems preparing for Christmas. Eventually, a touching gift is given to him and he grows up again, but realizes how loved he is and the magic of Christmas all over again.
Lovely new edition to the plethora of Christmas story books. In this book Santa is feeling his age and wishes to be young again but ends up much younger than he intended especially just days before Christmas. Sweet little story perfect for bedtime reading
I absolutely loved this book. The hijinks/magic works and makes sense. It's funny in parts. It ends with a sweet message. A kid finally got to meet Santa. This book is magic. I love it. The illustrations and text work perfectly together.
Jonathan Stutzman does it again! Santa Baby is a hilarious story about Santa thinking he's too old for Christmas. But then he becomes a baby again and Christmas might be cancelled. I really enjoyed this book and the illustrations and I think my patrons will too!
Bought this on a whim and I can鈥檛 wait to read it to the boys! It鈥檚 definitely a book that will make parents laugh (and grandparents cry from laughter) while the kiddos will love the silliness. And in the end, it鈥檚 a heartwarming story. Love!
This is such a creative way for a Christmas book. What adult doesn't wish they look and feel younger then they are. Well apparently Santa is not immune to those thoughts either. This book is so cute and I love that the meaning behind it is be careful what you wish for. I love how they show Santa getting younger. The illustrations are amazing and really fit the story. They are colorful with lots of red and gold which is perfect colors Christmas story. My kids really enjoyed this book and highly recommend others to check it out.
Always need a new December read aloud the kids have not read at home or with their classroom teachers. Gets harder and harder as they reach Gr 2-3. Will be adding this one to my list this year!
The magic of Christmas lives on. Santa can feel like any of us and may the rest of us who feel the same way find someone who restores our faith and hope in Christmas again.
"No matter how young you are or how old you feel, may you experience the wonder of Christmas as if for the first time...again and again and again and again." Love this message 鉂わ笍
