It’s summer break, which should mean a chance to relax, but not for Rei, who’s maneuvering her crush on Kei with something less than grace. And we get the backstory I didn’t know we needed.

The series’ penchant for the ridiculous is out in full force early in this volume, with Kei’s continued insistence that the inn they’re staying at is haunted. Naturally her imagination is the real problem, but the way this also mocks the incredibly dilapidated nature of the inn (and innkeeper) is a hoot.

It’s a necessary bit that helps balance out Rei being so hopeless she needs a really good shake. Now that Yatsude has been clued in by Tsubaki, she decides to confront Rei about this and makes the perfect audience surrogate for anybody wishing Rei could just get her act together.

Of course, true love doesn’t run smooth and between morons it’s even worse. The runner of Rei getting her face mashed in returns and that’s never not entertaining. It’s the usual antics, mixed in with the question of what love really means and how you deal with what you want in life. Oh, and you aren’t going to convince me that Kei isn’t acting jealous as all get out during the fireworks.

This whole volume is slowly increasing speed for a bunch of the relationships. To some success more than others - Tsubaki ends up hanging with her flashy friends and her own romance is in the midst of a complicated muddle right now. Not that she’s noticing while she extols her sister, although this story addresses siscons better than many I’ve read.

And then there’s poor Matsuri, who is head over heels for the college student who works at the arcade, which has all the earmarks of a doomed romance mixed with the unrequited crush of a young girl for a cool older senpai. Matsuri is note perfect as the awkward teenager who wants to impress somebody older.

Oh, but as good as it is, and School Zone Girls has clearly been playing the long game with its kernels of real feelings beneath its derpy exterior (Rei’s wrestling with her choice to just be happy with Kei’s friendship is emblematic of this), what really blew my mind was where things went with the twins, Tsubaki and Hiragi.

Hiragi has been a total misery to Tsubaki, though she’s admittedly gotten better and better, while Tsubaki has been, basically, a siscon ready for twincest the whole time. We finally get the story behind the story and damn if it isn’t a belter.

I’m an absolute sucker for ‘road to hell paved with good intentions’ stories and this one is just a brutal example of love that went very, very wrong. It’s less of a road than a four lane highway with rest stops. In the past, Hiragi was always there for Tsubaki. Always.

Except the one time she couldn’t be, which is when Tsubaki was there for her, but then she never ever stopped. It turns out that Tsubaki’s love made her into a scholastic and athletic dynamo that Hiragi has lived in the shadow of ever since.

Even worse, for Tsubaki this is just her way of bringing herself to her sister’s level and encouraging Hiragi to be her best. She works herself to death for Hiragi, which makes the betrayal that closes out the backstory even more tragic.

It’s absolutely fantastic stuff and I flipping hate flashbacks more often than not, so that’s saying something. And about twincest no less! It’s also the perfect reminder that the girls may be utterly ridiculous, but this manga knows what it’s doing.

4 stars - everything before it was a pretty strong 3.5 (including an odd running joke about toilet slippers), but that last story is so good it tempted me to bump it to a 4.5 overall. But I think splitting the difference is about right for a very good volume.

Dang, way to leave on a sad note like hell. Hiragi, get it together.

The pivot this volume takes from irreverent, hyperactive gag manga to genuinely gripping straightforward yuri dramedy (still with the best single panel howlers in the game) is so fucking captivating, all the more captivating because of how it builds upon the succinct jokey characterizations of previous volumes without losing the fluidity, without missing that investment the humor begets an investment in the characters at the heart of the humor. It is genuinely killing me to know the next volume is the last one for the foreseeable future.

A good installment to an already charming series!

I really like this manga , I watched the same Hazel video many others did and really fell in love with it. It's charming, fun and light. I see alot of people in the reviews for this series complaining about it slapstick and comedy elements but I think that's why I like it so much! If you think of it more as more Com than Rom , so to speak, it's alot more enjoyable and I think it especially appeals to my brand of humour. The series reminds me of the Inbetweeners or Derry girls (to give a western counterpart) and I don't think people particularly watch them for a riveting plot (to be completely fair Derry girls has an interesting political plot but that's not really relevant to this lol). The same applies here in my opinion , it's a light-hearted read that has occasional moments of cutesy romance and interesting story beats but at its core it's a quirky comedy.

To get to the specifics of this volume!! I really need to reread (and review) the series because I struggled to remember the specifics of some of the less "important" subplots such as with the school nurse and student council. But apart from that it read easily , as per usual! Story beats of note that I enjoyed/found interesting:

-The festival storyline!!!! Really really cute! Some beautiful panels aswell , the entire plot was all too relatable for me (Hang in there Rei lol) and read super nicely , a nice stable peice of narrative amongst the snippets.

-The exposition for the relationship between the Tsubaki twins was surprisingly interesting! They've always been my biggest gripe with the series , despite liking them both as characters, but this was refreshing to see and I hope to see it lead to a development where Hinase can realise her feelings are (obviously) not romantic love and rather a strong and quite unhealthy attachment to her sister!!! Like honestly once this is ironed out the series will benefit tenfold! I like how the author is going about resolving it but the whole "crush/romance" thing still feels unnecessary and we could've had a similar plot without it!

Again my only problem with the series is the twins , but since the author did a pretty decent job at handling it and making it feel a whole of a lot less creepy , this Volume can get it's due 5 stars because it really did a stellar job overall , especially with the festival storyline!!!!

Just loving this now and on the hook for the foreseeable future. Lots of great exposition, Rei and Kei had a beautiful festival date that really generated some tension and progress along with the seaside trip. The twins has a great angle going on too with some additional context coming up in this book. The arcade girl is the best and the story with the school nurse, councilor and student council head has my intrigue. It's a drip feed, but with so many arcs occuring simultaneously, it's a pleasure to read. Can't wait for more.
