Patrick Süskind

After spending the 1970s writing what he has characterized as “short unpublished prose pieces and longer un-produced screenplays”, Patrick Süskind was catapulted to fame in the 1980s by the monodrama Der Kontrabass (The Double Bass, 1981), which became an instant success and a favourite of the German stage. In 1985 his status as literary wunderkind was confirmed with the publication of the novel Das Parfüm. Die Geschichte eines M?rders (Perfume: The Story of a Murderer), which quickly topped the European best-seller list and eventually sold millions of copies worldwide.

"Koku" gibi ola?anüstü bir romandan, ayn? isimli harika filmden, "Güvercin" gibi karanl?k, ?ok güzel bir novelladan tan?d???m Patrick Süskind bu sefer a?k ve ?lümden, daha do?rusu kestirmeden birbirlerine ??kan yollardan bahseden deneme yaz?lar? ile ?nüme geldi. Olduk?a k?sa olan kitap ?ok güzel ve zihin a??s? teorilerden, dü?üncelerden olu?uyor. A?k ya da ?lüm üzerine dü?ünüyor, de?i?ik bir ?eyler okumak istiyorsan?z Can Yay?nlar?'ndan ??kan (kapa?? ?ok güzel bu arada) bu eseri ?neririm. Dili mi? Bu kadar zorlu, kar???k iki mevzuyu birbirine ba?lamas?na ra?men herkesin anlayabilece?i sadelikte. E?er "Koku" ya da "Güvercin"i okumad?ysan?z ?nceli?inizi onlara verin.

The books open with a passage by St. Augustine:
I just love Patrick Süskind.
The opening quote is about time. Süskind co-opts it to talk about love. When I first read it, I thought it applied equally well to good programming. I think it really applies to any process of the mind that is deeply grounded in our personal experience. Each one of us has certain thoughts that we understand intuitively, through our unique experiences. When we try to explain these thoughts to someone else, we fail utterly because we cannot reason objectively about them and the other does not share our experiences.
This book is very short. Too short, actually. He starts down a number of promising avenues, but stops way too short. And in the latter parts, he gives a very one-sided opinion in his comparison between Orpheus and Jesus. I would have liked a slightly longer, more balanced exposition. He can still come to the same conclusions, but it would feel less forced.
I enjoyed reading the book. It brings up interesting questions. But I was left wanting for more. It felt a bit like a broken promise.
If no one asks me about it, then I know what it is; but if someone asks me about it and I try to explain it to him, then I do not know what it is.

Suskind's telling of the story of Orpheus is beautiful. His take on the love/death of Jesus was very interesting, but shrouded by too much hostility. He kept an even temper with the rest of his subjects, but took every opportunity he could find (or make) to stick it to the J-Man. It worked as a comparison to Orpheus, but seemed out of line with the rest of the text. But perhaps that's because prior to the Orpheus/Jesus comparison, he seemed to mostly be restating the opinion of others, rather than his own...?

Pocket-sized 74-page airily formatted paperback essay about love and then about death and then about both. Worth it for the bit about the elder Mann (I presume) and the young waiter or the kids getting it on in an Opel at a stoplight or the description of Kleist’s suicide pact. Reads wonderfully thanks to the late great Anthea Bell translation. Would have liked ten or twenty more autobiographical pages about the occasion for this essay — wonder why he wrote it? It came out in 2006, around the time the author was pushing sixty and hadn't published in about ten years. Wikipedia says he's become a literary recluse, so this, his last publication, could be combed for autobiographical suggestion I suppose? Seems like one of those essays that come out of research for a forthcoming novel. A slant explanation for something off-stage? Worth it if you see a cheap copy somewhere. Suskind has a teleportive descriptive gear he hasn’t failed to reach with ease in each of the three books I’ve read of his lately. Also probably helps that his English renditions were handled by two of the greatest translators from the German.

Patrick Süskind oferece aos seus leitores na obra "Sobre o amor e a morte" um interessante e conciso ensaio sobre o que é o amor, sobre a morte e o modo como o amor e a morte se relacionam.
A sua escrita segue na linha do que o autor nos tem vindo a habituar... Directo, sem demasiados rondeios, por vezes um pouco crítico e mordaz. Lê-se fluentemente, sem grande vontade de fazer pausa.
E no decorrer da exposi??o das suas ideias vai buscar inúmeras vezes J. W.Goethe, que eu tanto gosto, e Heinrich von Kleist, que eu vou querer conhecer um pouco melhor. Traz-nos Plat?o, Santo Agostinho, Orfeu e a sua Eurídice e ainda recorre, de forma muito subtil e na medida certa, para justificar o seu argumento a uma ou outra passagem dos Evangelhos.
Gostei deste "apanhado"/"revis?o"/"lufada de ar fresco" cultural!

Derleme gibi bir kitap. Yani ?zel insanlar?n ?zel aforizmalar?n? bir araya derlemi? Süskind. En ?ok akl?mda kalan Orpheus'la ilgili k?s?m oldu. Bunun d???nda Patrick Süskind'a yak??an bir kitap oldu?unu dü?ünmüyorum. Hacminden dolay? belki okunabilir tabi.

Just brilliant. A relatively short essay that I read at court in an afternoon while waiting for the registrar to call my matters. I regaled several of my colleagues with an initial pithy page regarding the horror of re-reading one's old love letters, and would have regaled them further throughout the afternoon had I not decided that I didn't actually like their company much, and they could suffer through life without the wisdom of Mr Suskind.
I particularly enjoyed the final section, where Jesus Christ is unfavourably compared to Orpheus. As I wrote at the start of this review, just brilliant!
