Finding Netherfield: A Pride and Prejudice Variation

Rate this book
Caroline Bingley has her heart set on becoming the wife of Fitzwilliam Darcy and the mistress of Pemberley. To hasten the match, she wants her brother Bingley to lease an estate close to Pemberley. But when Bingley blindsides Caroline and leases Netherfield instead, her plans to reel in Darcy start to spin out of control. And when Fitzwilliam Darcy falls for the captivating Elizabeth Bennet, Caroline sees her dreams of Pemberley slipping out of her hands. It will require drastic action to separate Bingley and Darcy from the Bennet women, but Caroline Bingley is a determined young lady used to getting her way, and she will stop at nothing in her quest to become a Darcy.

Finding Netherfield is a lighthearted, comic novel; in the spirit of the time frame, it is a genteel romance where only the tea is steamy.

"Finding Netherfield" was a little too low-angst for me. A good story, told mostly from Caroline Bingley's POV. She was certainly scheming but with one big exception, not malicious.

I was always surprised when Caroline and Louisa called their brother "Bingley". Did they call him that when they were children?

I have hidden my thoughts in a spoiler so I don’t ruin the story for others.

We read Caroline Bingley's thoughts and actions as her brother hunts for a house to lease. One is rejected because there are no trees and another because of its Elizabethan architecture. This latter one is close to Pemberley so Caroline is very disgruntled by Charles' dissatisfaction. Bingley and his family spend a lot of time in Darcy's company and there are indications that he finds Caroline a candidate for the position of his wife.

However, in this story when Charles runs off and leases Netherfield in only one day's perusal Caroline is again not happy...for two reasons. This estate is not in Derbyshire and she notices that Darcy is entranced by Elizabeth Bennet upon hearing her sing. His attraction to her stays steady.

Caroline decides to do something drastic to force the party to have to leave that house. What she doesn't count on is the affability of the neighbors who offers guest rooms and daily dining at one home or another. Her sly action seems suspect to the Colonel as he questions her reactions on the date in question.

There is not much new in this story other than the action Caroline took and the subsequent relationship with the Colonel. The ending seemed abrupt.

interesting

An unusual and interesting premise in this variation inspired by Jane Austen’s classic novel Pride and Prejudice by Olivia Kane. I enjoyed it.

A very different take on Pride And Prejudice

This is mostly Caroline's story. She is far more rational and even somewhat nice, with one major exception. I enjoyed the story, though my personal preference is for a bit more angst.

The premise of this book is inspired. It depicts the genesis of Caroline Bingley's obsession with acquiring Darcy, or more particularly, Pemberley. If it would have stuck with this idea within the context of the original story I would have been all in. The author is a capable writer. Her characterization of Miss Bingley is well done.

The other characters aren't as well written. Georgiana is much more exuberant and less shy. Bingley is more easily manipulated but stubborn when it matters to him. Darcy is...I don't know what, but not really Darcy. Same goes for Elizabeth. She hardly has any dialogue. We don't see much of anyone outside the Netherfield party. But this is Caroline's story so I can roll with it.

Yeah, that didn't last. The author well and truly lost me with the Darcy and Elizabeth relationship. And then doubled down when it came to Colonel Fitzwilliam.

And why do Bingley's sisters call him Bingley? Even Georgiana calls him Bingley, but then she also refers to her own brother as Darcy.

Lots of mentions of iced buns. I was wondering if they were going to be a relevant plot point later on - poisoning, choking, or the like. Kinda disappointed that nothing came of it.

I really enjoyed this story. It was unusual--largely from Caroline Bingley's POV--and, I thought, well-executed. Mr Bingley was more interesting than usual, too, and Mr and Mrs Hurst were more full-formed than in most P&P variations. It was not, like so much self-published JAFF, riddled with typos and wild punctuation, though there were a few small errors in that vein, as well as a bit of word misuse: "was loathe to" which should of course be "was loath to", and "(in)discrete" come to mind. (Dear authors, it is ALWAYS "discreet". Always always always. "Discrete" means "separate", not "circumspect".)

The thing that kept it from being a five star story was some odd shenanigans with names. Jane Bennet and Charlotte Lucas were referred to repeatedly as "Miss Jane" and "Miss Charlotte", but as the eldest unmarried daughters of their respective houses they would be "Miss Bennet" and "Miss Lucas", nothing else. Lady Anne Darcy was called "Lady Darcy", which would only be possible if the Darcys had a title of their own, which they didn't. As the daughter of an earl married to an untitled man, she was properly "Lady Anne", or "Lady Anne Darcy", or even "Mrs Darcy". And finally, Miss Bingley and Mrs Hurst kept calling their brother "Bingley", as though they were his male friends and not his female relations. In P&P they called him "Charles", while Mr Darcy and Mr Hurst called him "Bingley".

A Caroline Bingley story

The bulk of the story revolves around Caroline and her quest to become Mistress of Pemberly. Darcy and Georgiana are bored and invite the Bingley family to visit Pemberly. Charles is searching for a property to rent but nothing he sees " feels like Pemberly " with its comfortable furnishings and dogs! From London Charles learns of Netherfield Park and it's all over! Of course he falls in love with the place and people, Darcy isn't rude and stand-offish, probably because Georgiana is with him.
The story is more Caroline and her thoughts, plots, and actions with everything else in the background. It's interesting to a point but not very satisfying. Even the marriage proposal and her acceptance were uninspired.

This is a Pride and Prejudice-esque book that was awful. The main character was after one person (Darcy) because she wanted to be mistress of his estate. She was relentless, doing everything she could to maneuver herself into a position to be around him and show him she was the perfect pick. But she was manipulative and did things she never regretted, feeling completely justified. Then her sister was ever on her side egging her on. Horrible.

It was like this all the way through until .

When it ended, I just said, "That's it???"

I cannot in good conscience recommend this book.

Fun reading a variation in Caroline Bingley’s perspective

This variation is well-written, well-edited and engaging. That being said, it’s not this reader’s cup of tea considering that it is written in Caroline Bingley’s perspective.

Many of the characters, including Fitzwilliam Darcy (giving a thought of Caroline as wife, appalling!) are somewhat altered. Elizabeth and the other Bennetts are given less attention and/or mention. As previously stated, it’s all about Caroline Bingley, her feelings, her thoughts and point of view.

Nevertheless, it’s still an enjoyable piece if the reader does not mind the shift in emphasis to a character who has always been viewed as a villain.

Interesting Perspective and a Great Author

I enjoyed this book very much, it really seemed to flow with the original P&P, some changes here and there but likely done to make this work. I found it to be well written and vey interesting, the story kept the characters in similarity fairly well since it was based on opinions of another member of the parties involved. I laughed, I called the villain names, it was a fun read. I also plan to read other novels by olivia kane.

Very entertaining

Told mostly from Caroline's point of view, this is an alternate universe where Bingley and his family come to Netherfield before Darcy and there are various disagreements as to which estate Bingley should lease and why. Observing Caroline manipulate a clueless, but surprisingly stubborn, Bingley, we see plenty of wit and humor. Caroline is definitely inventive in her plotting, which adds to the fun.

A more pleasant Caroline

It's refreshing to have a different take on Caroline Bingley. This story gives her a less acerbic personality where most of her nastier remarks are kept to herself rather than spewed forth with her trademark venom. She's still very interested in becoming the mistress of Pemberley, she's just going about it in a less obvious way.

I had read this book before. For some reason it did not show on my GR account. It's a shame, as I would never have opened it again.
- 1st it is in Caroline Bingley's POV. And a worse shrew I know not.
- 2nd our dear Colonel lowering himself to pick up Mr D's disappointed chaser (said shrew) knowing she is a shrew, has if he could not hope for better (a human with a heart perhaps?). And,
- 3rd, the lack of knowledge of the behaviour of the time.
It was terrible

Short sweet intriguing

This is Caroline Bingley's point of view and her "way" in finding love. I found this intriguing and different. Caroline wasn't changed much, but found happiness with someone other than Darcy. Highly recommended for all to read

Beware

Though not a bad story it is all about a somewhat different Caroline Bingley. Didn’t take from the story description that Darcy and Elizabeth have very little parts. Like I said, not a bad story but definitely not a P&P variation.

Long winded

If you are expecting a story of Darcy and Elizabeth you will be disappointed it is mainly Miss Bingley and we know what she is like.

An interesting take, we get to see a lot of Miss Bingley's thoughts. However, there was something inconsistent about the writing and the characters.

An enjoyable short read.

This is a truely original take on the p&p but I am just not invested in CB. So found I was a disinterested in her outcome. ODC were too periferal in this book to book me.
