¿Realmente se puede clasificar este libro en el género romántico? Pues sí, pero es muchísimo más que eso. Con seguridad no es el estilo de romántica al que nos tienen acostumbrados las autoras más contemporáneas. Es una novela que nos habla de soledad, de pérdidas, de prejuicios, de anhelos imposibles, de convicciones, del valor de la amistad y de la familia.
Con un escenario de fondo y personajes fabulosos, Juegos de azar es una novela exquisita en descripciones. Ya me sentía esperando la primavera y a los vaqueros con el transporte de ganado, llenando todo de polvo en su tránsito por la calle principal en un pequeño pueblo de Kansas.
Y las descripciones de lugares y ambientes se quedan cortas cuando empieza a ahondar en los sentimientos de los personajes. Hace tiempo que un libro no me emocionaba tanto. Agatha y Scott son dos personas muy diferentes que, poco a poco, van encontrándose en un lugar donde la vida no se los pone nada de fácil. La relación que va naciendo entre ellos es tan poco común que, por no atreverse, sólo la tildan de amistad. Una amistad que sanará sus corazones sólo si le dan la oportunidad de que se transforme en algo más.
Por eso, advierto que si lo que buscas son escenas intimas y pasionales, este no es tu libro, no las encontrarás hasta las últimas diez páginas. Es una novela que, con una narrativa más moderna, sigue la línea de los clásicos del género, pero que quedará en tu memoria por mucho tiempo.
Es una lástima que en la actualidad sea tan difícil encontrar libros de LaVyrle Spencer. Este es el primero y único que he podido comprar y, tal como lo menciono para mi reto, en una venta de libros usados.

Dividida. La historia es muy bonita, sobre todo lo referente a Agatha porque nada como meter tantas desgracias para tocarnos la fibra sensible y enternecernos como lectoras
Scott es un amor, me dijeron que se lo habían imaginado como mi adorado Rhett Butler y ya no me he podido quitar esa imagen de mi cabeza (con lo que adoro a Clark)
Esta mujer escribe bien sus historias son muy bonitas y nos habla mucho m´s que de ese romance. Son tantos los personajes que hace de su novela una historia muy completta
Pero mi gran problema ha sido la tristeza. Es una novela triste, todo el rato, un medio dramón, que a mí no me terminan de llamar porque lo paso mal leyendo.
además hay pasajes que se me han hecho muy cuesta arriba, y no le veo el qué a detallar tan profundamente lo sola que está la protagonista porque la soledad es otra personaje muy importante
Creo que es una novela muy centrada en ella, tanto que el espacio de él está compartido con otros personajes y le restan desarrolla
Es la segunda novela que leo de esta autora y supongo que entiendo que me cuesta animarme a leer sus libros.

Me ha enamorado esta historia.
Qué gran narradora es LaVyrle Spencer.
La manera en que describe y ambienta sus libros... te hace sentirte en 1880 en una taberna, en una sombrerería, en una gran mansión sureña. Lo ambienta al detalle y tan minuciosamente que te envuelve.
Lentamente transmite emociones y sentimientos. Te envuelve la soledad que siente Agatha y sientes sus anhelos, su aceptación de esa vida vacía. Te enamoras de Scott Gandy y entiendes que huya de un pasado que no puede olvidar. Sientes compasión, ternura y amor por Willy.
Es una historia de amor de esas que se fraguan lentamente, entre dos personas muy distintas, Personajes con miedos, anhelos, frustraciones... Una historia de amor pausada, sencilla, que nace lenta, prudentemente y crece envuelta por el amor que comparten por Willy.
Todos los personajes tienen su razón de ser y hay otra historia de amor muy tierna.
Para mi, es una de esas historias maravillosas que merece la pena leer.

Tengo tantas cosas a decir, que me he quedado sin palabras. Sin embargo, he buscado una que pudiera definir la sensación que me ha dejado esta historia y me he quedado con dos: dulce y tristeza. Más bien una mezcla de estas dos palabras.
Si hay algo que siempre digo, es que me gustan las escritor@s que arriesgan con sus novelas, y me parece que LaVyrle lo hace aquí de manera magistral. ¿A qué me refiero? A la protagonista y su dolencia física. En cuanto a la historia en sí, para mí, MARAVILLOSA.

I should review this. I have some strong opinions on it. Especially disliked her facile treatment of the post-slavery South. The whole "slavery wasn't so bad if your owner was a swell guy" and the whole "Mammy" thing with the old housekeeper made me angry. Add in a bizarre three-page-long scene involving horses mating and the brilliance of the preceding 300 pages just went up in flames. Just, no.

This is my fourth book by this author. I fell in love with her work after reading Morning Glory and Hummingbird. She has a wonderful way of expressing her character’s emotions so that you feel a part of their lives. Their happiness, pain and sorrow, their hopes and dreams become yours. And with each book I become completely immersed hating when I have to stop and put the book down and somewhat sad when the book ends!
The Gamble certainly held all these attributes and I was not disappointed! In 1880, fifteen years after the Civil War, in a small town in Kansas lived thirty-five year old Agatha Downing. A milliner owning her own business, this spinster could have been the poster child for primness and propriety. Suffering from a hip disability received during her childhood, she has almost given up hope of finding love and having a family of her own. I admired her strength and tenacity and will remember the heart-wrenching sorrow of her desolate days/nights along with the joy I felt with her HEA!
How much I liked the hero, Scott Gandy! The complete opposite of Agatha, this handsome rogue, with southern charm oozing from his pores, has just become her new landlord. Not only does he live upstairs in an apartment next door, but below, next to her millinery shop, he has just opened the doors of his new saloon, The Gilded Cage. With not a care or a thought to what others think of him or in their beliefs of what is right or wrong, this charismatic charmer fills his days with making his business a success while also fighting the memories of what used to be in his life. There was so much I liked about Scott Gandy and when an innocent child enters the picture, I liked him even more.
There are no hot, steamy descriptive love scenes and not even a strong sensual sizzle until nearly the end. What I found was a gentle unfolding of a tormented heart and a captivating, charming, beautiful man running from his past, who start out enemies and then surprisingly find themselves friends. And slowly, over the many months of sharing the responsibility of a young five year old child, and in spite of their differences and beliefs, and with the tension over prohibition and the temperance movement, a tender yet strong love develops.
I enjoyed the journey this author took me on, experiencing the simple pleasures and the hardships of life during the 1880’s from Kansas to Waverly plantation in Mississippi. I loved the secondary characters who made up Scotty’s saloon family, a motley crew for sure, but with such charm and lovability!
A tender, poignant love story first published in 1987 with endearing and heartwarming characters. Though somewhat different than most I’ve read and having a few things that bothered me, it was still one that I enjoyed from beginning to end! Thank you Jill and Tammy for another recommendation that I loved!

QUE HISTORIA TAN MÁS BONITA!!!
Pese que el inicio no terminaba de engancharme y batallé bastante para agarrar el hilo de la historia, cuando lo hice no pude parar de leer es que llegas a un momento donde la historia te atrapa.
Después que terminé de leer Maravilla quedé encantada con la autora y dije que tenía que seguir leyéndola, me demoré un poquito más de la cuenta pero aquí me tienen.
Me ha encantado todo, porque no es una simple historia de amor, es una historia donde la amistad y los lazos que los unen no se necesitan ser de sangre para ser una familia, es una historia de esperanza, de superación. El drama es tan sutil porque claramente los personajes han sufrido y eso los ha moldeado pero no se han estancado en su pasado, no es así de me estoy azotando todo el tiempo por lo que me pasó, obviamente hay momentos de reflexión y de nostalgia y poco de dolor pero no más.
Los personajes son maravillosos, empezando por Agatha que es una solterona de 35 años que tiene una discapacidad tuvo una accidente de niña por culpa de su padre borracho y quedó coja, eso a ella la marca ya que ella más adelante va a luchar en contra de la venta de alcohol porque ha visto como transforma a los hombre y ha separado familias y esto hace que tenga un encontronazo y con el apuesto dueño de la nueva taberna del pueblo Scoth Gandy.
Agatha es una mojigata y a la vez inocente, es correcta y educada es dueña de una tienda de sombreros no tiene familia y se siente tan sola, siempre ha anhelado un buen esposo, una bonita casa e hijos pero sabe que con su discapacidad sólo se quedará en sueños. Pero esta mujer también es valiente, es generosa, amable y una persona amorosa que merece cumplir todos sus sueños.
Scoth a primera impresión parece un hombre cínico e impúdico, pero alberga un corazón bien grande, todos los que trabajan en la taberna con él son personas que por una u otra razón es los salvó y dependen de él es por eso que va a luchas contra Agatha contra la ley seca. Es un hombre que ha perdido mucho en la vida proviene de una familia adinerada que le dio todo, pero que le fu arrebatada por culpa de la guerra.
La relación de Scoth y Agatha pasó de ser enemigos a tener una sólida amistad donde podían confiar entre ellos, el romance surgió de una manera tan pausada pero demasiado, que cuando se dieron cuenta que estaban enamorados ya había pasado mucho tiempo. La manera en que la autora desarrolló su amor fue muy creíble y si me gustó pero yo hubiera querido un poquito más páginas de amor.
Si esperas muchas escenas de sexo debo advertirte que aquí no lo vas a encontrar sólo hay una escena y uno que otro besito.
Sólo tengo una queja y que me molestó un poco, fue que ya estábamos a más de la mitad del libro y Scoth y Jube todavía eran amantes, mientras se desarrollaba la relación con Agatha. A pesar de lo anterior un historia que sí recomiendo.

5 Estrellitas. ¡Maravilloso! ¡Precioso! Me ha encantado éste libro, de las mejores novelas que he leído del género. Admito que no esperaba gran cosa porque el Oeste no me atrae especialmente.
No es lo primero que leo de LaVyrle Spencer, pero ya veo que tiene libros muy buenos y otros reguleros, sin duda, éste es de los mejores.
"Juegos de azar" se escribió hace casi cuarenta años, pero el estilo de la autora aporta una frescura que ha perdonado el paso del tiempo y en ningún momento sientes que es una novela viejuna.
La acción ocurre en un pueblecito de fronteras, en Kansas, en 1880. La protagonista es Agatha Downing, la sombrerera del pueblo, una solterona de treinta y cinco años que arrastra una cojera severa desde un accidente que tuvo en su niñez. Actualmente, Agatha se alza en el adalid de la templanza y en un icono para las mujeres de su época, al ser una de las precursoras de la Ley Seca.
Tanta es la devoción que siente Agatha por su movimiento, que la lleva a enfrentarse innumerables veces con su nuevo y atractivo vecino, Scott Gandy, un sureño que ha abierto una nueva taberna en el pueblo.
Scott es un hombre íntegro y solitario que sólo está de paso. Su vida fue idílica hasta que estalló la Guerra de Secesión y se lo arrebató todo, excepto el mausoleo que es Waverly, la plantación sureña de su familia. Pero Scott no puede regresar, los fantasmas del pasado le impiden volver a casa, y sólo espera una existencia pacífica y con las suficientes comodidades. El problema es la coja solterona de la sombrerería, que le causará más problemas de los que querría.
Desde el principio se ve la animosidad de los personajes, sin perder el respeto el uno por el otro, y creando unos enfrentamientos deliciosos. Ambos, sin quererlo ni beberlo, acabarán más unidos de lo que esperaban, gracias a la presencia de Willy, un pequeño huérfano que se mete en los corazones del lector.
La novela es bastante larga, pero ello en ningún momento hace que sea larga o tediosa, al revés, es tan bonita y entretenida que no quieres que acabe.
Si lo que buscas es un romance apasionado, quizás no lo encuentres como tal, pues los protagonistas, hasta prácticamente el último 10% del libro no se declararán su amor. Aunque confieso que no lo he echado en falta, el libro tiene sus justas dosis de romance para crear una historia preciosa. Y será precisamente esa soledad lo que una apasionadamente a los protagonistas, pues aunque solitarios, ambos tienen mucho amor para dar.
Me ha convencido y me ha enamorado cada capítulo de éste libro. Lo recomiendo si disfrutáis de las buenas novelas de romance histórico. Por mi parte, LaVyrle Specer me ha cautivado con ésta novela como lo hizo con "Maravilla" y estoy segura de que leeré más cosas suyas en un futuro.

Tanta es la devoción que siente Agatha por su movimiento, que la lleva a enfrentarse innumerables veces con su nuevo y atractivo vecino, Scott Gandy, un sureño que ha abierto una nueva taberna en el pueblo.
Scott es un hombre íntegro y solitario que sólo está de paso. Su vida fue idílica hasta que estalló la Guerra de Secesión y se lo arrebató todo, excepto el mausoleo que es Waverly, la plantación sureña de su familia. Pero Scott no puede regresar, los fantasmas del pasado le impiden volver a casa, y sólo espera una existencia pacífica y con las suficientes comodidades. El problema es la coja solterona de la sombrerería, que le causará más problemas de los que querría.
Desde el principio se ve la animosidad de los personajes, sin perder el respeto el uno por el otro, y creando unos enfrentamientos deliciosos. Ambos, sin quererlo ni beberlo, acabarán más unidos de lo que esperaban, gracias a la presencia de Willy, un pequeño huérfano que se mete en los corazones del lector.
La novela es bastante larga, pero ello en ningún momento hace que sea larga o tediosa, al revés, es tan bonita y entretenida que no quieres que acabe.
Si lo que buscas es un romance apasionado, quizás no lo encuentres como tal, pues los protagonistas, hasta prácticamente el último 10% del libro no se declararán su amor. Aunque confieso que no lo he echado en falta, el libro tiene sus justas dosis de romance para crear una historia preciosa. Y será precisamente esa soledad lo que una apasionadamente a los protagonistas, pues aunque solitarios, ambos tienen mucho amor para dar.
Me ha convencido y me ha enamorado cada capítulo de éste libro. Lo recomiendo si disfrutáis de las buenas novelas de romance histórico. Por mi parte, LaVyrle Specer me ha cautivado con ésta novela como lo hizo con "Maravilla" y estoy segura de que leeré más cosas suyas en un futuro.

The Gamble is a book full of richly developed and endearing characters with an engaging and fleshed-out plot. This book overflowed withheart and soul. The ending was beautiful and left me feeling like a hopeless romantic. That said, I would not classify this book as a romance novel. It felt more like general historical fiction with a splash of romance. While the book had very little romance, what little it had left me feeling starry-eyed and dreamy.
Overall, I enjoyed reading the The Gamble. However, I prefer more romance than this book offered.

A esta autora la conocía sólo por otro libro, "Maravilla", que me encantó, y no me ha decepcionado nada en este segundo.
Es una preciosa historia de amor cocinada a fuego lento. Con la gran narrativa que caracteriza a esta autora, te transporta totalmente al escenario que nos está describiendo y te transmite todos los sentimientos y sensaciones que tienen los personajes.
Un gran libro.

No me pasa con muchos autores que, una vez acabados sus libros, siga recordando momentos ocurridos en él y a sus personajes y me vuelva una sonrisa a la cara y, sin duda, LaVyrle Spencer lo consigue siempre. Todos sus libros hasta ahora se me han clavado en el corazón y con todos he disfrutado muchísimo. Maravillosa.
En esta ocasión nos encontramos con otra historia con multitud de personajes, todos con personalidades fuertes y bien marcadas, libres (sobre todo), nobles, de gran corazón y que se te meten en el tuyo sin poder remediarlo. Y una trama pausada, pero que te atrapa y no te deja escapar.
Sí que es verdad que al principio me costó entrar en la historia, pero pasadas las primeras páginas arrancó y ahí ya no pude soltarlo. La manera de narrar y contar sentimientos de la autora es tan maravillosa, tanto, que hace que una vez que te sumerges en sus páginas no quieras salir de ellas para nada.
Una historia de amor de las que se cuecen a fuego muy lento, con muchísimos sentimientos y mil aventuras entre medias enmarcado en un entorno sencillo y muy humilde. Una novela preciosa, muy humana, con mucho sentimiento y con valores preciosos.

Para mí, destaca el cómo consigue la autora, poco a poco, que nos vayamos enamorando de ellos, de su relación, de su necesidad, de sus ansias por quererse, de ese encuentro entre los dos. El primer beso te deja casi sin aliento. Es muy tierna, es realista, es bonita, te atrapa y te obliga a terminarla de un tirón. Vamos, sin ganas de repetirme, ha sido maravillosa (confieso que solté una lagrimita).

Juegos de azar tiene ese sello inconfundible de romántica clásica, de los enamoramientos que se dilatan en el tiempo, del cuidado en la ambientación, en los detalles.
He notado alguna cosa "rara" en la traducción - como un "lo balearon"-, esa clase de detalles que me sacan de la lectura. Eso y que me ha faltado más pasión entre los protagonistas es lo que ha hecho que se quede con 4 estrellas.
Lavyrle Spencer es una gran apuesta.

My second spin with LaVryle Spencer has again been a pleasing experience. THE GAMBLE grabbed my attention quickly and I found the characters unusual and well developed.
I thought I was heading for a higher rating because Scott and Gussie (Agatha) were wonderful enemies, then friends. These two were from different sides of the tracks in terms of moral code and saloon owner and milliner ended up with a begrudging truce. There was a gorgeous family element to this story that was diversity before diversity was a thing.
Where’s things went a bit astray for me was with the hero, Scott. There were issues involving more than one woman that I found hard to stomach especially in it’s persistance. I have taken into consideration the era this book is set in and also the era this book was written in and still I struggle with this issue. It soured things a little for me.
I think LaVryle Spencer can craft a skillful story with detail and fullness. I’m really looking forward to reading more from her.

Como ya me sucedió la primera vez que lo leí su lectura no me ha durado nada... Lavyrle tiene una forma de escribir maravillosa y con una delicadeza que te atrapa.
La protagonista es Agatha una mujer solitaria y mojigata que por culpa de una accidente en su niñez la dejó con una cojera que le ha marcado por vida. Con sus 35 años ya se siente una solterona que le va a ser imposible formar una familia, cosa que ella anhela más que nada.
Su existencia se ve alterada cuando el nuevo dueño del edificio donde tiene su sombrerería y su casa monta una taberna, el dueño, Scott, un sureño galante y bribón (yo me lo he imaginado como Rhett Butler protagonista de "Lo que el viento se llevó") que se trae a su pequeña "familia", ex prostitutas reconvertidas en bailarinas y cantantes Jube, Ruby y Pearl y tres hombres que malvivían en un barco fluviales, Jack, Ivory y Marcus, para que lo ayuden en el bar.
Para Agatha una mujer con altos valores morales la taberna de su vecino era un antro de perdición así que cuando llega al pueblo una representante de la organización "Mujeres por la Templanza", una organización que buscaba la ilegalización del alcohol ya que lo consideraban que era una substancia que destrozaban las familias, no duda en unirse al movimiento lo que no esperaba es que la nombraran presidenta de la organización local.
Poco a poco Agatha empieza a tener más relación con sus vecinos y descubre que no todo es blanco o negro, que esas mujeres que ella había considerado mujeres perdidas son como ella que las circunstancias de la vida les había tocado vivir esa vida. En los hombres descubrió a personas que a pesar de que eran "enemigos" la protegían y cuidaban de ella. Y sobre todo descubrió que Scott no era el demonio que ella pensaba.
La aparición de Willy, un niño de poca edad que su padre lo tenía casi abandonado se convirtió en el lazo que acabo de unir a los dos protagonistas, sin ser pareja se convirtieron en unos padres sustitutos del adorable niño.
Agatha encontró en las personas que habitaban la taberna a la familia que no tenía, a los amigos a los que recurrir cuando tenía a algún problema.
La relación entre Agatha y Scott se va cociendo muy a poco a poco, pasan por diferentes etapas, primero se detestan por las posturas que defienden cada uno, luego se hacen amigos y esa amistad se convierte en otra cosa aunque a los dos les cuesta un poco de admitir por lo diferentes que son y por temor.
Es un libro precioso en donde nos ensalza la importancia de la amistad, en como los amigos se pueden convertir en la familia a que veces no tenemos. A no dejarnos llevar por los prejuicios pero sobre todo una historia de amor que se ira cociendo poco a poco, un amor que veremos como va naciendo delante de nuestros ojos.
No dejéis pasar la oportunidad de leer esta maravillosa historia de amistad y amor ;)

3.5 to 4 stars. A long book with two distinct sections. The first two thirds or so takes place in a rough and dusty cattle town. Saloon owner Scott Gandy and spinster prohibitionist Agatha Downing live and work right next door to each other. It's an enemies-to-lovers story as these two very different people gradually grow to respect and like each other, then slowly start to fall in love.
The later part of the book takes place mostly at Waverley, a former plantation on the Tombigbee River, and Scott's childhood home. Waverley is a real place (that can today be visited by the public) and the writer had the owners' permission to use it in the story. It's a grand old survivor of the Civil War.
In many ways it's clear the character of Scott Gandy is based on Rhett Butler. The dimpled good looks and the southern gentleman charm, at least. Gandy is a different person from Rhett though, and he has a different role to play in his story. A former soldier in the war, and the loved son of (now deceased) plantation owners. His loved wife and tiny daughter both lost while he was away at war.
Agatha is a woman of strength and integrity, but she is lonely and isolated. She also has a hip disability due to a childhood injury (from abuse), which resulted in a permanent limp. When Scott and Agatha connect, they bring out the best in each other, and their eventual open admission of their love for each other is a beautiful thing.
This book is a typical LaVyrle Spencer slow-burn romance. It does take quite a long time for things to culminate between Agatha and Scott. The story is interesting and involving, with its insights into the Temperance Movement, and also the plantation lifestyle as it would have been before the war. But it is long........
The last section of the book at Waverley is beautifully done and quite moving, and the final line of the book is lovely. I was thinking 3 to 3.5 stars maybe, because the book felt a little long. But then that final section was so lovely I upped it to 4 stars. So therefore, the final overall rating of 3.5 to 4.

I really wanted this to be a five star book. Agatha was the perfect character and almost had the perfect romance. However, her "mister right" sucked. Nothing about this man was romantic at all. And the authors rosy view of slavery was extremely off putting.
Do you me to tell me that an ex-slave owner named "LeMaster" - a man who fought in the war for slavery - is treated like a hero by his slaves? That his slaves excitedly run back to the plantation and work for him for free? That in the 1800s black and whites coexisted in together complete harmony? I mean segregation was never a thing... I also especially enjoyed the black mammy stereotype (NOT). For an author who goes through such pains to accurately depict the periods in which her novels are written, she really dropped the ball on this one.

4.5 stars. Before she retired, LaVyrle Spencer was probably my favorite author. I thought I'd read read every one of her books, but found a reference to The Gamble, which was unfamiliar to me. The style of the book is different than what's selling today. But I was just as caught up as I was 30 years ago.
The Gamble is a friends-to-lovers story. An oh, it takes forever to get to the lovers stage. What an enticing wait it is. There was plenty of sexual tension, and even the kisses--once they finally came--made me wait with great anticipation. The wait was all about the hero, Scott, who just wasn't ready. He made us wonder if he'd ever be ready. And even when he got close, he still wasn't sure, delivering those infrequent kisses as if testing.
I'm so used to today's sexually aggressive, can't-wait-to-get-into-her-pants hero, that Scott's leisurely journey to intimacy with our heroine Gussie seemed to take forever. In a good, full of anticipation way.
In today's books, they would have rushed to intimacy, then had the leisurely journey to love. All the while delivering hot love scenes. The Gamble stayed true to history, and Scott knew there was no intimacy with a lady like Gussie unless he was married to her.
Reading The Gamble made me think it might be time to revisit all of LaVyrle's books.

Aún así, los personajes están tan increíblemente construídos que es algo muy de Agatha.

Hay detalles en este libro imposibles de olvidar. Las manos de Scott rozando la ropa recién limpia de Agatha, sus miradas encontrándose en medio del barullo, sus rodillas rozándose sin querer, sus manos entrelazándose de forma natural mientras consuelan a Willy. Sí, no tiene una trama trepidante y tampoco es un libro ligero, pero es precisamente eso, el tiempo que necesitan para enamorarse poco a poco, lo que hace tan especial este libro.

When Scott Gandy opens the Gilded Cage Saloon in Proffitt, Kansas, the ladies of the Temperance Committee are not happy. Led by Agatha Downing, the committee visits each saloon, handing out pamphlets, carrying a petition, and praying for the souls of the inhabitants. Scott tries to charm the ladies. When that doesn't work, he tries to outsmart them by bringing in dancing girls to fill the seats at the saloon. Agatha and Scott may have their differences, but those take a backseat when they come to care for an orphaned child. Helping young Willie helps them build a friendship that overcomes the other obstacles in their relationship.
This story takes place as Kansas becomes the first state to vote in prohibition. LaVyrle Spencer has written a book with wonderful characters. Agatha could have been a hard, militant heroine that was hard to like, but she is written as an honest, decent woman who has her reasons for despising alcohol. Scott Gandy is my kind of hero. He is trying to make a living for himself and his employees (who he calls family). He feels responsible for everyone and is worried that prohibition will put them out of business. He treats Agatha as a lady, but also as an equal in their business relationships. They both bring out the best in each other as they become friends.
This book was not a fast-moving, intense story. It sometimes plods along a little too slow for me. There was one point where they were separated that felt like it went on forever. But overall I enjoyed the story and loved the characters. My rating: 4 Stars.
This story takes place as Kansas becomes the first state to vote in prohibition. LaVyrle Spencer has written a book with wonderful characters. Agatha could have been a hard, militant heroine that was hard to like, but she is written as an honest, decent woman who has her reasons for despising alcohol. This was ok. But I wasn’t excited to keep reading.
The author writes well, but the underlying story just wasn’t as interesting as some of her other stories.
Agatha is a 35 year old spinster who sews and makes hats. She was injured as a child and has a limp. Gandy’s wife and daughter were killed at the end of the Civil War. He has been wandering since, and recently opened a bar with gambling and dancing girls.
Agatha works to help pass laws to prohibit alcohol in Kansas in 1880.

A mesmerizing, moving, slow burn romance rich in historical detail. Prim and proper milliner Agatha and saloon owner Scott, are the perfect MC's for a battle of wills. A book about found family and second chances...it's a keeper and a true love story. One of my favourite books of hers.

This is so good.
The Gamble had all the tropes I love in a romance. If I had one complain, it would be that the couple only get together in the last 10%. It's a sloooowwww burn.
Ultimately, this left me feeling like I've just finished a good, long movie. The story has compelling main characters, a solidly-built cast of secondary characters, wonderful chemistry between characters and a colourful backdrop. It's not perfect but it got me so emotionally invested. There were many points where I shed tears for Agatha, the entire situation with Scott and Willy, etc.
Agatha was the most wonderful character - she's truly the heroine of the story. She's selfless and kind, but she's not one-dimensional (as so many romance heroines tend to be). I loved the complexity of her thoughts and she has always me guessing how she would react when faced with another problem or dilemma.
I can't explain how much I loved this. I think it might be one of my favourite reads of the year.
