You know Cocktails and Camels? Now that鈥檚 the antidote of that鈥 the 鈥渁nti christ鈥 馃樃 It鈥檚 the story of the ostracized whose story is buried under the wrecks. I think the brilliance of this book comes from the 鈥渄etails鈥 which took me back to the city I鈥檝e been away from for about four years now. It took me back and gave me rapid flashbacks of the scenes and sounds and smells that I was so familiar with. Aly, a transgender and a masochist, is stifled with all the judgments and rejection he faces, so he meets his fate in Beer Masoud. Sayed and Hanaa suffer from infertility and their dull lackluster married life until she one day walks away leaving him behind feeling completely numb and void. Zahra, the sister inflicted by bad luck and plain looks, is threatened to be homeless due to the 鈥渋mprovements鈥 the new governor wants to introduce to the city. It鈥檚 an Alexandrian 鈥淟e Miserable鈥 with the sea waves trickling in the background. It鈥檚 the 鈥渃ounter鈥 narrative of the city.
