Rate this book
Hitch meets The Sun Is Also a Star in this novel about a self-professed teen love doctor with a popular radio segment who believes he can get a girl who hates all things romance to fall in love with him in only three dates.

Prince Jones is the guy with all the answers—or so it seems. After all, at seventeen, he has his own segment on Detroit’s popular hip-hop show, Love Radio, where he dishes out advice to the brokenhearted.

Prince has always dreamed of becoming a DJ and falling in love. But being the main caretaker for his mother, who has multiple sclerosis, and his little brother means his dreams will stay just that and the only romances in his life are the ones he hears about from his listeners. Until he meets Dani Ford.

Dani isn’t checking for anybody. She’s focused on her plan: ace senior year, score a scholarship, and move to New York City to become a famous author. But her college essay keeps tripping her up and acknowledging what’s blocking her means dealing with what happened at that party a few months ago. And that’s one thing Dani can’t do.

When the romantic DJ meets the ambitious writer, sparks fly. Prince is smitten, but Dani’s not looking to get derailed. She gives Prince just three dates to convince her that he’s worth falling for. Three dates for the love expert to take his own advice, and just maybe change two lives forever.

Dani and Prince were adorable, even though what they had was not feeling like love! But they were still super cute. I was scared this was going to end up being insta love with how fast things were getting in the beginning. It didn’t really feel like that by the end, since Dani was pretty realistic about what love is and how she still has some time to experience all of that. Prince claiming Dani can fall in love with him by three dates was technically right there in the description and that is what I should have expected, but I still found it kinda cocky and not that cute, but their relationship still developed really nicely and arguably, realistically. Prince claiming to be a love doctor also bugged me for some reason. It’s really no big deal but the advice he was giving on his show was not from a teenager. There I said it!!! You can’t fool us LaDelle!!! The advice was still pretty solid and I did enjoy reading them.

My favorite parts of the book were their individual parts. Dani and Prince both had passions for books and music respectively and it was beautiful!! I could feel the passion exuding out of the book and it’s always great when an author is able to get readers to actually feel the passion of their characters. It was also really smart for LaDelle to let Dani and Prince to both be supportive of each other with their passions to increase their connection with each other. Also, they both had individual struggles with Dani struggling with what happened at a party on an unfortunate night and Prince having a mother suffering from MS with dad not in the picture. This was something that the characters struggled to share with each other for a big part of the book, but LaDelle does a great job of letting them open up more and more to each other at the right times.

Other themes like choosing the right friends, the people who show us what love really is, and having amazing family members were nicely represented in the book. All of these, plus the romance and other details mentioned above gave a perfect balance to the book!!

Love Radio is a hard-hitting, heart-warming, YA-Romance following two teens in Detroit approaching the end of their high school years.

Prince Jones, our male lead, has an Uncle who is a popular radio-DJ. Prince, being raised with his Uncle as a strong influence in his life, loves all things music. He also loves helping people.

So, when his Uncle offers him a segment on his popular hip-hop show, Love Radio, Prince graciously accepts. His mission, to give romantic advice to those seeking it. He is dishing advice and good music. It's perfect.

Dani Ford, our female lead, dreams of moving to NYC and going to college to become a writer. She has always dreamed of becoming a writer. The only thing standing in her way at this point is the dreaded college essay.

You would think that would be an easy task for an aspiring author, but Dani had something happen to her a while back, a traumatic event, that has ended up having an lasting impact on many different facets of her life.

Dani has started to withdraw a bit from her peers, a fact her loving parents definitely recognize, yet they've been unable to get Dani to open up to them about what's going on.

When Dani and Prince meet, he's smitten. He's actually been noticing her for a while, but has never had the courage to speak to her, but how can he give out serious love advice if he can't even follow it himself.

While their first real encounter isn't perfect, the two definitely make an impression on one another.

From there, we follow the two as they get to know one another and Prince vows to win Dani's heart over just three dates. The Reader gets a front row seat not just to the exquisitely-adorable dates, but also to what's going on behind the scenes in both Prince and Dani's home lives.

Will the self-proclaimed teen love doctor be able to get the girl, or is all his love talk just hot air?

I absolutely adored this story. From the very start I was enamored with these two characters. Both of them were very well-developed and likable. It was so easy to get behind them and cheer them on.

For me, one of the highlights was all the incredible heart-felt details that LaDelle put into both of their backstories. Both Prince and Dani were very committed to their families and the scenes involving their family members were indeed some of my favorites.

And even though there are a lot of heavy-hitting topics explored, there was also a lot of fun and humor in this as well. The banter between Dani and Prince, as they got more comfortable with one another, had me laughing out loud and, at times, blushing a little.

I loved how mature these two characters were. Even though they were teens, that didn't mean they couldn't have their heads on straight. They both had goals, and in spite of outside influences, they both were steadily working towards achieving the things they wanted.

Additionally, I liked how they learned to support each other and help one another work through their difficulties.

I did listen to the audiobook and one thousand percent recommend that format. The narration was spot on. The narrators absolutely brought these characters to life.

I went through it over the course of this story, feeling pretty much every emotion under the sun. I learned from these characters and was inspired by them. It melted my heart.

Overall, as you can tell, I loved this. It had many strengths as a story and I feel like it is so underrated at this point. I really hope more people discover this wonderful book and give it a go.

Thank you to the publisher, Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, for providing me with a copy to read and review. I cannot wait to read more from Ebony LaDelle!!!

One of the best YA books I’ve read in a long time. Romance is definitely a big part of it but at the heart of it is a really powerful, black coming of age story. I loved this so much.

**ARC provided by publisher in exchange for an honest review**

Prince has been having a crush on Danielle for a long time. She is focused on learning and finishing her collage admissions. After accidentally meeting in a library he is convincing her to give him a chance - 3 dates to make her fall for him - and the love story ensues. And not just any love story but one that is build on respect, courtesy and mutual support. It's a YA but uncharacteristically for this genre there is not even one toxic relationship - Prince and Dani have both really wholesome connections with their families and friends. Sometimes even to the point of over explaining and over validating all the emotions.

So while I can't stress enough how important it is to show a healthy teenage love I found this one to be lacking in the chemistry department. They are helping each other grow, encouraging themselves to dream bigger and wanting harder and yet it was still hard for me to believe that there was any love involved. Maybe I am just too cynical but both Prince and Danielle seemed pretty stoic and even the extravagant dates they had didn't convince me that they had this blooming affection. Sprinkle it with a dialog that occasionally comes across stilted and I finished it being a bit meh about it.

To sum it up: I feel like its a must-read for high school kids but for older readers it can be a bit too pedagogic.

Such a sweet little ya romance!! 🥹🥹 It was the PERFECT palate cleanser and a great pick if you want something short and cute with really well-developed characters 💝💝🫶🫶

“That's what love looks like. It's not always about the flowers and grand gestures, but this right here. Being completely yourself with another person in the moment, and them accepting no less of you.

Love Radio follows our two mcs, Prince and Dani. Prince is passionate about music and romance and gives relationship advice on his Love Radio show- however, his own love life is looking a bit sad... Meanwhile, Dani isn't looking for a relationship- she is determined to focus on her plan to move to NYC and become a famous author- while avoiding thinking about what happened at that party a few months ago. When Prince and Dani meet, sparks fly but Dani doesn't want to get distracted- so she gives Prince only three dates to convince her he's worth falling for...

I kinda picked this up on a whim bc the cover was really cute, but i'm really glad I did!! i've literally never seen anyone talk about it but it's such a sweet romance and more people need to read it 🫶🫶

One thing i really appreciated about this book was how well the characters were portrayed. Both of them had a lot going on and different struggles, but their development was done really well and i found myself rooting for both of them!! 🥰🥰 Dani annoyed me at first, but once i got to know why she's so prickly and struggles to let people in, i really sympathised with her. and Prince was literally so wholesome and sweet, i loved him 🥹💗 Their relationship was also really cute and i enjoyed seeing the progression of it. Prince literally treated Dani so well and they both helped and supported each other a lot, which i loved to see 🫶🫶

Plus this book managed to so cute and wholesome, while also tackling a lot of really important topics. There were so many issues talked about in here that i could really relate to. Dani's backstory was so heartbreaking but VERY realistic and i just think the author handled the subject matter really well ❤️❤️

There obviously were some things i didn't love. I must say, the beginning was a little rough and i really struggled to get into it. And there were a LOT of pop culture references and the characters used a ton of slang, so if that's not your thing, this book would probably annoy you 🙈🙈 But i enjoyed it enough to look past the not so good 🫶

“I read somewhere that the best lovers are best friends first. And Prince, you’ve become my very best friend. That’s what I missed the most. I missed our laughs, and our talks and your clumsy ass.

Overall, such a cute read!! 🥹🥹💝💝 I would recommend if you want:

 Well-developed characters
 Lots of hard-hitting topics
 Wholesome romance
 Very quick and easy to read

Also, just look at that cover 😍😍

 2023 Challenge: Book 122 of 110!!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This was literally so cute 🥹🥹 the perfect fluffy little romcom between all the high stakes fantasies 💝💝🫶🫶
I stan Prince & Dani 4 life!! There’s a reason I don’t usually read YA books. I don’t like falling for 17 year olds😂.
Prince Jones was an old soul and so wise beyond his years. This is the book I needed as a teen. This book made me cry ugly tears. It does deal with some heavy stuff that both characters go through, but it’s so real and I just loved this so much.
I love when you go into a book skeptical and it ends up surprising you!! I just want to hug this book.
This book started a tad bit slow and I was afraid I wouldn’t enjoy, but to my surprise this was a really good story and I forgot I was reading a YA Romance. Prince & Dani were both mature and throughout the story I continued to see growth. This was really a good story.
It’s so great reading a new to me author that I end up falling in love with. I adored Prince and Danielle and their story. This was adorable and light at times, but also had plenty of emotion. This one pulled on my heart strings and the end made me so happy!
THIS 👏🏿BOOK👏🏿NEEDS👏🏿 TO👏🏿 BE👏🏿 MADE👏🏿 INTO👏🏿 A👏🏿MOVIE.
I repeat. THIS BOOK. NEEDS. TO. MADE. INTO. A MOVIE. If not movie, then I'll also happily accept show adaption. But either way, it needs to be adapted for the screen. This is romcom, sweet love material right here.
If you are struggling to find a good read for black history month & Valentine's day, then look no further than this book. This book literally is a love letter to black love and the famous black romance movies that showcased them.
Love Radio was an exceptional young adult book that had me deep in my feelings! Danielle and Prince were so special and I could not get enough of their story. The way the author wrote this book, the stories of triumph, and navigating high school while battling various hardships was phenomenal. I really commend Danielle and Prince for their maturity and the way that they dated and got to know each other. Prince was the sweetest!!! Like where was he when I was in high school! He was charismatic, thoughtful, helpful, and selfless! His character really hit home for me- it brought me back to my high school years when I didn’t want to go too far from home for college. It’s not easy having a parent with a disability. I know from my own experience and the author handled that storyline with such depth and grace. Danielle went through a lot and it broke my heart, whew!! The feels. I loved how the author wrote Danielle’s story and how realistic it was. I loved that she rekindled her friendships and explained what happened to her and sought help. It was courageous. All in all, this was a sweet story, raw, and heartfelt. It was so good, I didn’t want it to end.
“Don’t ever think I fell for you or fell over you. I didn’t fall in love, I rose in it. I saw you and made up my mind. My mind. And I made up my mind to follow you too 😭❤️
Young, Black love will always do it for me and this felt like a love letter to Detroit 💜
Dani and Prince had me smiling the entire time I was reading/listening. I loved Prince’s character. He was a caretaker, so thoughtful and gentle with Dani even when he had no idea about the things she didn’t speak about. I was so proud of Danielle for the steps she took towards her healing - learning to love herself so she could properly love someone else. This was a beautiful book and I definitely recommend it if you haven’t read it already. This might be my new comfort read.
Now when I say that I like YA novels that don’t “feel YA this is the type of story that I’m talking about!!🥰
This was one of the cutest books that I think I’ve ever read.
This was all of my top 90’s black love films wrapped in one big box, but just the teen version. I really like the pop culture references and education we were given throughout the story in regard to authors, poets etc. I learned so much!
For them to be so young, they both dealt with some difficult situations but used the proper coping mechanisms to help them heal and move forward which I think was important to incorporate as this is targeted for a younger population.
I loved how every main character in this story was mature and really portrayed in a positive light what love is supposed to look like. I really had a good time with this🩷
OH HOW I LOVE BLACK YA! A story about a Black girl who loves reading from Black authors letting go and experiencing her own love story like in the movies. Tell me that’s not something that was written solely for me. Danielle and Prince were just the cutest things ever. Prince being the love expert and Danielle not believing in love like in movies was possible. The thought that Prince put in to the dates to impress Danielle like my heart could burst. Like a scavenger hunt in an empty bookstore with clues being about her favorite authors, SIGN ME UP! Danielle having to work through her trauma and find healthy coping mechanisms was such a touching message. Prince taking care of his mom with a debilitating disability and how that factored in to his life decisions/goals was such an important conversation that I rarely see in books. Everything about this book made my heart sing!
I didn’t fall in love, I rose in it! IKTR Danielle!!! I’m such a sucker for love whether it’s young or old! Danielle and Prince were the cutest! Both in their last year of high school their paths finally crossed despite being in several classes together dating as far back as middle school. Prince always had his eye on Danielle but it wasn’t until the Love Dr. came up with this plan to make Danielle fall in love with him after 3 dates that she began noticing him as well. The thoughtfulness of Prince was everything! He truly paid attention to Danielle and what her deepest desires were. As she let her guard down, she was able to open her heart to feelings she never thought were possible. I was cheesing the entire time I listened to this audiobook. Love wins again!
The audiobook was.. chef’s kiss🤌🏾
There’s something about young black love that just tickles my fancy. The dates Prince planned for Danielle was so well-thought out and sweet, he was such a gentleman. The scene of him helping her take her braids down will forever live in my mind rent free. I loved how Danielle decided to take him out on a date, which was so funny because we see her being completely disgusted with the idea of love in the beginning of the story. This was so refreshing. Down to both Danielle’s and Prince’s friendship group, I could not get enough. I also loved how we learned so much about Prince’s and Danielle’s backstory, it gave them so much more depth which is another reason I was so attached to this story.
lady gaga saying talented. brilliant. incredible. amazing. showstopping. spectacular. never the same. totally unique.
i LOVED this book!!!
this book follows prince, aka dj lovejones, a boy who gives relationship advice on his own radio show and is wishing for a love of his own, and dani, a girl who’s trying to bury something that happened in her past while struggling with her college essay. the two are in their senior year of high school, which of course comes with its own struggles, but they were each dealing with their own stuff, too, which made things harder. but when they meet, prince is smitten, while dani wants to stay focused. dani allows prince three dates to see if it’s meant to be.
this book seriously almost made me cry. it’s not even super sad, especially when compared to other books i’ve read, but their story was so sweet and i fell in love with both of them🥹 i fell in love with the story and the writing, too, and i did not want to put this book down!!
i cannot recommend this book enough!
This book was adorable! Prince really went in with the cute little dates he planned for Dani! I loved them together.
If you love wholesome YA romances you will enjoy this but it does also deal with a touch of sexual assault trauma.
I feel like we got to learn a lot about Prince in terms of his mother’s illness, his radio show and goals for the future but I don’t feel like I got that depth with Dani.
Looking back now I barely remember anything about her apart from she wants to go college in New York.
The end of this book is the reason it got 4 stars instead of 5, not every romance book needs a 3rd act breakup, especially not one so random like this! I would have preferred if the ending didn’t have the random rushed breakup & makeup
Overall I recommend it
it was absolutely ADORABLE. I legit had the time of my life with this book. Round of applause for Ebony Ladelle. Thank you SOOO much Queen👑
🛠️THE BASICS🛠
Ok, so this book centers around Danielle, and yall, she’s seen some stuff ok? Shes a smarty pants and an amazing writer with amazing taste in rolemodles, and one day she stumbles across the hot Dj in town who’s also a local celebrity(It’s giving Superstar by Usher vibes) His segment on the radio is ofc relationship advice. So he makes a bet with Dani that he can make her fall in love with him in three dates
💝✌🏾💭MY INITIAL THOUGHTS💭✌🏾
This book was AMAZING. I loved every minute of it. It’s definitely one of my fave romances of all time now. I loved the black culture representation. It was EVERYTHING and sometimes it can be hard to find black love represented CORRECTLY. Not struggle love or pure smut, but love at it’s purest and this book did just that. And it shows all the forms of love, not just romantic. And listen, as a music fanatic/junkie I had a deeper appreciation for the music incorporated.
📝⌨️ܶٴ⌨️📝
Dani’s arc was BEAUTIFUL. I loved watching her grow and over come her trauma. Don’t get me wrong, Dani was already a strong independent girl and I was ALL here for it, but throughout the book she really learned that it’s ok to ask for help and it’s ok to let other people in your life. And she had to learn the tough lesson I did that some people just aren’t meant to be in your life and that’s completely fine.
📻💞ʸ䷡💞🪩
Prince is my mans and I will fight👏🏾for👏🏾him👏🏾 He was the DREAM. I SWEAR if I find a Prince in real life it’s over. He was caring, smart, and nothing less than a gentleman. He respected Dani’s boundaries, and gave her space if and when she needed it. He never pressured her or had ulterior motive. He just wanted to get to know her and it was beautiful (fellas be taking notes. He can teach you a thing or two) and he was the PERFECT representation of a REAL MAN, not the fictional perfection I usually go for. He handled his business and took care of family AS👏🏾HE👏🏾SHOULD👏🏾. His family was FIRST. It was a PRIORITY and he wasn’t even fully grown yet. THATS what we need to see more of.
All in all, Ebony Ladelle I love you so much for writing this MASTERPIECE. It was everything I could want and more and im all here for it. Round of applause for a queen guys👑👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
This fun YA novel of relationships and belonging to one's self has great characters, a delightful soundtrack (yes, I'm anticipating playlists across music apps to reflect what's in the book), and a playful engagement with Black romantic films. That doesn't mean there isn't challenge, lots of obstacles to choosing not to change or grow, or take risks for love, or otherwise there would be no story, and no reflection of the music and movies that are so deeply interwoven in the text. Recommended for individuals, lovers of romance, and those who appreciate characters past stock and into interesting and sweetly imperfect. I read this an ARC and everything in the ARC says: get it, share it, request it for your local library.
