Louis Marie Alphonse Daudet authored novels. He was the younger brother of Ernest Daudet. He was married to Julia Daudet and the father of L茅on Daudet, Lucien Daudet and Edm茅e Daudet, all writers.
Family on both sides belonged to the bourgeoisie. Vincent Daudet, the father, manufactured silk, but misfortune and failure dogged the man through life. A boyhood depressed Alphonse amid much truancy had. He spent his days mainly at Lyon, left in 1856, and began life as a schoolteacher at Al猫s, Gard, in the south. The position proved intolerable. As Charles Dickens declared that all through his prosperous career, the miseries of his apprenticeship to the blacking business haunted him in dreams, so after Daudet left Al猫s, he woke with horror, thinking for months that he still dwelt among his unruly pupils.
On 1 November 1857, he abandoned teaching and took refuge with Ernest Daudet, his brother only some three years his senior, who tried "soberly" to make a living as a journalist in Paris. Alphonse took to writing, and a small volume, Les Amoureuses (1858), collected his poems and met with a fair reception. He obtained employment on Le Figaro, then under energetic editorship of Cartier de Villemessant, and wrote two or three plays; those interested in literature began to recognize him as possessing individuality and promise. Morny, all-powerful minister of Napoleon III, appointed Daudet, who held a post of his secretaries till death of Morny in 1865, and Morny showed Daudet no small kindness. Daudet put his foot on the road to fortune.

Is it possible that one can write beautiful descriptions of pain? I don't know if this is really a "book" so much as a collection of notes, but I was mesmerized. I kept thinking to myself - why hasn't this been done before? (And maybe it has, but I haven't come across anything quite like it.) This is what pain is like from the inside - pain without cure, pain leading to death. And it's incredible.
"My poor carcass is hollowed out, voided by anaemia. Pain echoes through it as a voice echoes in a house without furniture or curtains. There are days, long days, when the only part of me that's alive is my pain."
"In the morning my hands are obstinately curled up on top of the sheet, like dead leaves, deprived of sap."
Daudet describes his experience at different spas and watering places, where he meets patients of all types - even a few remarkably like himself, which warn him of what's to come. "My doppelganger. The fellow whose illness most closely resembles your own. How you love him, and how you make him tell you everything." His descriptions of the symptoms of the other patients, and their conversations, the world of those who live in constant pain - "At the start of each season at Lamalou the patients, in all their weirdness and diversity, draw comfort from the demonstration that their respective illnesses all have something in common. Then, when the season's over and the baths close, this whole agglomeration of pain breaks up and disperses. Each of these patients turns back into a loner, someone isolated and lost amid the turbulence of life...Only at Lamalou is he understood, only there are people truly interested in his disease.'
That Daudet was a great writer is undeniable. To write this must have been the most difficult of all subjects. He didn't finish. There came a time when he no longer wanted to dissect his pain, when it was no longer his focus.

"Pain, you must be everything to me. Let me find you in all those foreign lands you will not let me visit. Be my philosophy, be my science."
In short: this is the non-fictional version of The Magic Mountain; a collection of notes that was supposed to be turned into a novel chronicling the pain Daudet experienced from tabes dorsalis, its effects on his relationships with friends, family and the various drugs he took and physical treatments he underwent at various sanatoriums, including Lamalou.
These notes are tense and intense, a difficult read as he writes unabashed from a deeply raw personal experience, charting his symptoms in graphic detail and utterly honest. When it becomes his turn to suffer, Daudet discovers that pain, like passion, drives out language and words come out only when everything is over, when things have calmed down.
"Notes seem an appropriate form in which to deal with one's dying. Pain finds its way everywhere, into my vision, my feelings, my sense of judgement, it's an infiltration. I imagine a conversation about Pain between Christ and the two thieves." (- funny, so did I.)
Charcot, the greatest neurologist of the day, psychotherapist and classifier of nervous diseases declared Daudet 'lost' in 1885, but he lived another 12 years in increasing pain and debility, saw the finest specialists and tried the latest treatments, no matter how outlandish. Charcot recommended the Seyre suspension, in which the patient was hung up, sometimes by jaw alone, for several minutes, causing excruciating pain and little good.
In 1883 Turgenev had an operation in Paris for the removal of a neuroma in the lower abdomen. The doctors gave him ether rather than chloroform and he was conscious throughout. Afterwards, when visited by Daudet, Turgenev told him that during the operation it was like a knife cutting through a banana. Goncourt, recording this anecdote, commented, "Our old friend Turgenev is a true man of letters."
After misdiagnosing Turgenev's cancer as angina, Edmond de Goncourt calls Charcot a charlatan who shaves his temples to give himself the head of a thinker and the entire Charcot family a collection of nutcases made nutty by their association with neuropaths.
After trying the Brown-Sequard treatment, involving painful injections with an elixir extracted from guinea pigs (or bull testicles), Daudet came to rely on large quantities of palliative drugs: chloral, bromide and morphine (up to 5 injections in a row).
None of his doctors were quacks per se; Sequard for example was professor of physiology and neuropathy at Harvard and the first to show that epilepsy could be produced experimentally in guinea pigs; each of his physicians was trying to outwit a then invincible disease.
Daudet's response to his condition, both personal and literal, is admirable, he writes that "Suffering is nothing, it's all a matter of preventing those you love from suffering. Pride is not imposing on others the bad moods and sombre injustices of your suffering".
This honourable, correct, difficult (and unfashionable) position allowed Daudet to familiarise himself with many ironies and paradoxes of illness. He discovers that one is unwilling to inflict Pain on the loved ones, talks down the suffering and thus deprives one's self of the comfort one craves.
"Pain is always new to the sufferer but loses its originality for those around him. Everyone will get used to it except me."
Next, one discovers that one's Pain quickly becomes repetitive and banal to the loved ones; what happens around illness might be dramatic and heroic but illness itself is ordinary, boring. Even Turgenev can't do better than a sliced banana.
"In the morning my hands are obstinately curled up on top of the sheet, like dead leaves, deprived of sap."
He returns to this idea many times, echoing some of this reader's thoughts on Pain as being simply Boring; a dull, constricting, word/thought-chocking cage of meat (see ) the Self simply finds oneself in:

The pain journal of a syphilitic Victorian novelist serves up fragments of lucid insight into the horror of living with an incurable illness. It is unthinkable the scale of pain people had to suffer before the advances in medicine, and astonishing to see the stoicism Daudet shows while enduring the onslaught on his nervous system (although copious buckets of morphine were a regular palliative). A passion project for Julian Barnes, who stylishly translated, annotated, and introduced the volume, In the Land of Pain is a terrifying and strangely life-affirming peep into the corporeal abyss.

In the Land of Pain by Alphonse Daudet is a set of notes about his ghastly suffering due to tabes dorsalis, a form of advanced syphilis that develops over the course of decades and, because it attacks the spinal cord, generates an utterly bewildering set of painful symptoms: no part of the body, or mind, is spared, there is no predictable rhythm or sequence involved, it could be your calf, it could be your trembling hands, it could be double-vision, it could be transient paralysis, it could be a species of uncontrollable jigging and dancing.
Daudet was a commercially successful French novelist, short story writer, and playwright in the latter part of the 19th century. From adolescence on, he fornicated widely and often. Somehow a lady of court is attributed as having infected him around age 17, but again, decades passed as he succumbed to the excruciating miseries of this malady. When he determined (in the 1880s) that he wanted to write about what was happening to him, he fretted over who might read a work of fiction as not fiction at all...so he kept these notes, which went unpublished for yet more decades and eventually were translated into English, quite masterfully, by Julian Barnes.
I've never read a book quite like this one. Daudet is unsparing in his self-assessment, not as a moralist but as an almost detached observer. The famous French physician Charcot told him he was lost long before he died, but Daudet apparently held no grudge against Charcot for his candor. His ethic, it seemed, was to write as naturalistically as possible, and when he wasn't writing, to minimize the impact his increasing debility had on his family and friends. That, to him, was the essence of courage.
Not long ago I read Reynolds Price's account of his own horrific illnesses; this book goes further in capturing the torture and humiliation of pain but, again, in an unsentimental way. Neither book reflects surrender even as the human body, the flesh, wastes, withers, and rots. Pretty astonishing proof that the body is in some ways a merely inconvenient incident in the life of the self.

Painful as it is to read, this is one of the only texts that has confronted me with what living in my own land of pain is like. Pain--so impossible to describe--is here acutely rendered in Daudet's notes, scribbles of desperation, despair, and the helpless void that is living in chronic pain. As someone with a chronic pain condition, I cannot recommend this tome enough to my friends and family, or to anyone who wishes a glimpse at the trials and travails bestowed upon those with constant, physical suffering.
As Daudet writes, he has "no general theory about pain. Each patient discovers his own, and the nature of pain varies, like a singer's voice, according to the acoustics of the hall....Pain is always new to the sufferer, but loses its originality for those around him. Everyone will get used to it except me."
How wretched that the only camaraderie found for those with such pain lies in that of others. Daudet--I thank you.

The problem with Julian Barnes' In the Land of Pain by Julian Barnes, translated by Julian Barnes and with footnotes by Julian Barnes, is that this is supposed to be Alphonse Daudet's autobiographical account of his time receiving treament for syphilis in sanatoriums.
And it still is that, it's a frank and intimate collection of Daudet's short and beautifully written notes on medicines, morbid humour, TMI details of fellow patients and agony. The book is barely a novella in length, and yet it should be about 60% shorter because Julian Barnes, played by Julian Barnes, will not stop talking. His footnotes regularly take up half a page or more, and it almost feels like I'm reading dual stories in some thoroughly unwanted reminder of .
Unlike House of Leaves, Barnes' second narrative is actually interesting and informative, and I enjoyed his mini essay about the long relationship between syphilis and writers, with some even claiming it was a badge of honour or maturity, which is bloody horrifying. My real issue with the book is the terrible layout, and if the footnotes had been endnotes or another essay on its own (thus not butchering the pages) I'd have instantly added another star.
A fascinating read on a gruesome subject and thoughtful annotations placed in a thoughtless way.

Recommended by a customer to my husband as a "must read". I, unfortunately, cannot give that same shout of praise. Two of the three stars I give this is for Julian Barnes -- just for being Julian Barnes.
There are some interesting factoids about early writers, as well as syphilis, pain, and drug use among some of those considered "the greatest minds and thinkers of our time". Not interesting enough, however, for me to suggest you bother reading this yourself.
