I have a BFA in photography and was recently feeling nostalgic about the history of photography and the key players I learned about in school, so I picked this up for a fun read. It wasn鈥檛.
Frankly, this book is kind of all over the place (like the other books in this series. Idk why I gave this series another chance.). I feel like a lot of important historic and contemporary photographers weren鈥檛 mentioned that is frankly insulting. Instead the author spent too much time in the themes and techniques sections that was frankly a waste to read. At least, a portion of the techniques section was a waste. Explaining the various types of photographic prints was a good idea, once he moved into stop time and flash/light photography he lost my interest. Also, his choice of themes (ie: weather, love, animals, etc.) shows that he was stretching to make that section look intentional. Lastly, using the key developments as interesting points in themes/techniques left me with more questions than answers. Each page would detail key photographers of X, a generic paragraph or two about X, a image that was 鈥渟upposed鈥 to represent X, and you would assume that the key detail would be an expansion of X as a whole. Not the case. It often started on another topic (related to X sure) but wasn鈥檛 properly summarized in like 2-4 sentences to feel like it was purposely added.
I've been taking a lot of pictures in the last year or less with my smart phone, so I guess this is the reason why I checked out this book. Basically each page shows has a summary of a different kind of photography. I also just took modern art history, so I recognized some of the photographers. I wish they went into modern photography though, even if it might be daunting, and not as serious minded as say 30-40 years ago. Maybe when everyone takes pictures, the value of photography lessens, I don't know. Some of the stuff I didn't really get, but that's ok. I just really wish they had gone into photography this century, since this is a new book and all.
I absolutely adore taking photographs (and think I have a good eye for it if I do say so myself) but I don't find the mechanics behind it or processes very interesting. This book was split into different chapters ranging from theme to style. The only issue I found with this book was that they repeated photographs too. There must be thousands of famous shots and they re-used the same photographs which I thought was strange. It was good looking at some of the most famous pictures and I particularly liked the historical ones but outside of that I wouldn't say I'd recommend it. This book is for somebody who already has some knowledge of how photographs are processed and actual camera functions.

Fascinating journey through the history of photography, with technical information about the development of cameras and printing techniques, as well as analysis of creative themes over the years. There are some very familiar photos included in the selection, with commentary on the photographers. Excellent book to sit down and admire the artistic medium of photography. Don't forget to look up the first selfie!
The author did a good job keeping the pace of book by not getting overly technical and kept it all straight to the point. I really liked the insightful interpretations of the photos as well.
