In the brand-new thrilling mystery from a #1 Amazon and International Bestselling author, Detective David Wolf is pulled to a high plateau in the heart of the Colorado Rockies, and to a murder case that will test every ounce of his character.

When a sheriff’s son is found dead in a neighboring county to the south, clues show foul-play. Led by the same sheriff now doubling as a father hell-bent on vengeance, the investigation turns violent, pushing the local district attorney north to Rocky Points for help. They need somebody with an outside perspective to lead the investigation, and Chief Detective David Wolf is just their man.

Wolf has no pending investigations and there’s a fellow man in law enforcement in need, so he has little reason to say no and every reason to say yes. However, it’s not the sheriff who’s asking for help. And as it turns out Wolf has a history on the football field with this sheriff—one involving a lot of pain for Wolf.

Setting aside personal feelings, Wolf ventures south and gets tangled in a mysterious investigation, and finds a truth that is fractured, its pieces scattered wide by the explosive nature of the big man from the gridiron now wearing the badge in Crow Valley.

Just as expected Wolf finds his presence is unwanted, but it’s soon clear that innocent people are in mortal danger with the vigilante justice that’s being doled out in Crow County, and there are unseen forces at play rendering all involved blind. With danger looming if he makes one misstep, can Wolf gather all the pieces of truth and stop the killing?

Or will this be the time he dies trying?

A good story with both likeable and hateable characters. The ending was a bit to predictable for my taste, but otherwise a respectable read.

David Wolf is asked to go to a neighboring Sheriff's office to lead an investigation into the murder of that Sheriff's son. The Sheriff is an old high school football player and nemesis of Wolf's. He also has a reputation of being a Bully and riding rough shod over the rules. David has several confrontations with him and has to convince people who may know something to fess up despite being afraid of the threats on their lives if they do. Success comes at the cost of several severe beatings while confronting the Sheriff.

I'm a little disappointed

Don't get me wrong - I'm a fan of Carson's David Wolf series. In a couple of days I find him to be similar to Wayne Stinnett's Jesse McDermitt, and they both appeal to me. Wolf is law enforcement in a small section of Colorado, while McDermott is doing his business at sea. Both are former armed service, both around sixty, both have lost spouses, and and of the two, Wolf is a bit more beat up. He doesn't always come through with flying colors. But he comes through.

Here he's asked to intervene in a case in another town because the victim is the son of the sheriff - and the sheriff is an old nemesis from high school football days. As usual with the Wolf books , I read it non-stop.

My.issues? As in, why I didn't give it five stars? The first.was.a.relatively minor but annoy: there were at four instances where Carson's production team let him down. A couple of sentences with a word or phrase that didn't make sense; the use of "their" instead of "they're", one other item that slipped through. That the Kindle format makes it possible to note and submit (which I did) should hopefully allow those things to get corrected . Again, they are minor but I'm of the opinion that they should have been caught. That's supposed to be why you have editors and proofreaders!

The other issue is one that carries more weight. Without giving away the whole thing, the source of why the kid died -not necessarily how - was so obvious to me that I began to wonder what happened to.Wolf that he missed it. I don't think I'm the only person who tries to figure out the mysteries before the protagonist, but this one was so glaringly obvious that, if I were the editor, I would have had Carson wrote more to justify Wolf's failure to sniff it out.

Never the less, I've already pre-ordered the next one in the series. Here's hoping all those errors are.vanished by the time it comes out.

Was good, the plot flowed, the story takes him out of town to help solve a murder. Missed the people he works with and being a back up for him.
This job he got so badly beaten it’s a wonder he lived
Piper has moved, new job and close to Wolf, but not too close
Overall was good.

Enjoyable police procedural set in rural Colorado

Detective David Wolf goes to a small town outside his jurisdiction, to help investigate the murder of a sheriff’s son. This should’ve been an easy read, but the author desperately needs a competent editor to assist with punctuation, grammar, and continuity issues. My focus was interrupted by too many errors.

Character development is good, but there are some blatant clichés. The setting descriptions are excellent and are organic to the storyline. The murder mystery delves into the usual who, when, and why, but more importantly, who tampered with the scene and moved the body. More, was it murder or suicide?

Early in the book I figured out the reason behind the young man’s death. Then it became determining whether it’s murder, naming the killer, and most of all, characters motive(s).

Recommend to crime fiction readers.

While I enjoyed this book I figured out the "secret" early on.
Wolf's assistance is requested by the DA of a nearby county to help investigate the death of the sheriff's son. Said sheriff is a nemesis of Wolf's from his high school football days and there was no love lost.
The David Wolf series is a great joy to read, with Carson's thorough knowledge of the Colorado area in which it's based

I really liked this book. It reminded me of CJ Box’s books but events happened faster in this novel and it was a quick read with twists and turns.. Apparently this was book 15 in the David Wolf series. This was the first one of his I’ve read so he’s a great enough writer that you can pick up anywhere in the series. I will read more of his books!

I DO LOVE THIS SERIES AND ALL THE CHARACTERS (feel like I really know them) AND STORYLINE. I WORRY ABOUT WOLF; HE REALLY TAKES SOME HORRIBLE ABUSE. I STILL DONT'T THINK THE HUMAN BODY COULD TAKE ALL THAT AND LIVE, BUT HE'S STILL STANDIN' AND I'LL KEEP READIN'. SMILE. ;D

Another great Wolf story. I’m docking a star because there are some repeated themes that bug me. He gets beat up too much. His new girlfriend is indistinguishable from the last girlfriend. I keep hoping he rekindles things with the FBI agent. Nonetheless I’m eager for the next installment.

Good story overall but some things were overdone for me - Sherriff Mustaine and the whole high school bully and is still a bully was a bit old and the characters left behind in Rocky Points were not portrayed as well as when they are part of the story and the whole build up about the girlfriend moving there was a waste of time. Also, the frequent grammatical errors have been mentioned in a number of books

You would think by the 5th chapter, the author would do more than describe roads, valleys, sunshine, road conditions, views, etc ad nauseum. I got tired of all potatoes and no meat. It might be my fault for trying to read book #15 in a series without reading any of the previous. But so far this book is NOT a THRILLER, NOT a MYSTERY, and there is very little ACTION and I'm not willing to spend any more time on it or any other books in this series by this author. Very disappointed.

a good story - BUT

The author did a fine job with the plot and the characterization of the main character! The narrative of the romantic relationship between Wolf and piper was dreadful; it contributed nothing to the plot! I skipped any of those! HINT: tell your story; leave the poor romance narrative to a different type script!

This was a fun read, as most of the books in the David Wolf series are. Wolf is loaned out by Sheriff Patterson to nearby Crow County where a young man, early twenties, is dead from a gunshot wound to the head, pants down around his ankles. It appears as if the body has been moved in the victim's truck, and the truck has been left in a semi hidden location. The deceased happens to be the son of the county sheriff, which he visits he's Wolf's participation. Sheriff Mustaine was a year older than Wolf in high school, and as rivals, the football teams played each other, with Wolf as quarterback subjected to many defensive hits from Mustaine. Mustaine went on to play ball in college, but blew out his knee just after being drafted. He returned to Crow County and went into law enforcement while Wolf was in the army.
Plain and simple, Mustaine is a narcissistic bully, abusing his son and co-workers, probably his absent wife too. The loss of his son seems to tip his behavior into the psychotic. Rather than excuse himself from the investigation, Mustaine goes on rampage, physically and verbally abusing potential witnesses without observing law enforcement procedure, such as warrants, etc. It takes a physical confrontation byetween him and Wolf and his subsequent arrest before any progress gets made on the case. The entire department works to contain Mustaine in normal circumstances, when he's out of his mind with anger and grief its a departmental crisis.
Eventually, with bravery from Wolf and the other deputies and under sheriff of Crow County, the case is solved. Wolf is wounded while rescuing hostages, and a man dies. Another nearly looses his life. Despite being hurt, Wolf finally has some positive news in his romantic life. It'll be interesting to see where the next book in the series takes Wolf.

High Road is the latest (#15) installment in the David Wolf mystery series. Just when I thought he had dealt with all the crime in Rocky Points, Det. Wolf was asked to go to another Colorado county to lead the investigation into the death of the son of the Crow County Sherrif. Although it seems straight forward Wolf has a history with that sheriff stemming back to their contacts on a high school football field. Sheriff Mustaine was a big bully in high school and remains a big bully in his County (big in every sense of the word). He is out for vengeance putting innocent people in danger. In a high school football game Mustaine literally beat up Wolf and is clearly not interested in having Wolf "interfere" in the investigation. From the very beginning of the case I had a sinking feeling it would be a disaster. And it was! But Wolf had to prevail if the series was to continue.

I have consistently given the Det. Wolf books 5* ratings. I had to reduce my rating in this case because the editing was terrible...e.g., words left out, the wrong character named...it was disappointing. But it remains a good story with lots of suspense, and I am looking forward to reading #16.

A Badge with No Honor
Those of us who are complete David Wolf geeks have encountered the Sheriff from Crow Valley before. He's a big bear of a man with the temper of an injured mama grizz. He is not a pleasant guy, to put it mildly; and he's now back in Wolf's orbit.

This is one of those great stories in the series that shows just how adept Wolf is with his observation and discernment skills. Of course, most of the people of Crow Valley could tell you what was going on... if anyone would dare talk. But no one seems willing to stand up here. Even the cops won't divulge what they know, and the dead guy certainly isn't talking.

I love it when I can be 15 books into a series and still want more of a character. David Wolf has plenty left to show us, and I'll be there for every story. He's an incredibly complicated man, although he doesn't seem like it on the surface. But this whip-smart, honorable, and courageous man has currents that run deep within him. Mr. Carson, keep bringing us these stories!

His Day Started Off Wrong And Never Got Any Better

David Wolfe is back to being a detective, after trading places with Heather Patterson, now the sheriff, a short time ago. When he is summoned to her office shortly after arriving that morning, he knows it is not good news, but never suspects how it’s going to ruin his whole day. A sheriff’s son in another town has been found dead and David is being assigned to take over the case. The problem? David has a bad history with this sheriff and knows there is trouble ahead.

Jeff Carson has penned another mystery that draws you in and keeps you reading. It’s not just the plot, but his ability to totally immerse you in the surroundings so that you feel you are right there with David Wolf when he does his investigations, trying to find the answers yourself.

Fun read. David Wolf doesn’t disappoint.

I really enjoy the David Wolf series. Throughout the series, we the readers have been able to see Wolf and the supporting characters age and grow. Makes you feel like part of the family. This particular story is fairly straightforward - in and out, as Patterson would say. In the process, Wolf faces a formidable opponent - a ghost from his past. The villain is suitably evil - a bad sport, a really bad cop, and an even worse father. Some good detective work, but not a lot of suspense or plot twists. By mid-story, you’ve pretty much solved the crime. The real suspense is how many hospital days Wolf is going to rack up before he closes the case, and what’s up with his new girlfriend, Piper. Still, this story is fun, will leave you battered and bruised, and will keep you turning pages until the end.

Carson takes a while to get into the real meat of the story but once there, it keeps you going. In my opinion, there was way too much of the main character's personal life after the antagonist is dealt with. Mr. Carson also needs a good proof reader and some grammar lessons on the conjugation of lie and lay. Sad for a professional writer. If the errors were in quotes, you could contribute the errors to the speaker, but not when they're used outside quotation marks. I also found a couple of incomplete sentences. Strange. The bad part of this is that you're trying to get a flow for the reading then you have to stop and try to figure out how (or if) it fits into the story, then try to pick up your pace again.

High Road Book 19--Jeff Carson Gets High.Marks!!!!!

Jeff Carson just keeps this series getting better and better while keeping so fresh with new insights of characters. Davis Wolf evolved since I read Book 1! Although he is the main character, Carson adds a totally additional dimension. The man is not perfect and the reader gets to be inside Wolf as new aspects of his character evolve. In High Road, David loaned to an out of town sheriff's office to help solve a sudden death of that sheriff's son. But Wolf has history with sheriff, dating back to high school football as opponents. Wolf and Piper are still an item. If you like a beautifully paced murder mystery, this is for you!
I highly recommend this truly Outstanding story!

HIGH ROAD by Jeff Carson is book fifteen of his David Wolf detective series. The story doesn’t start with a hook. Just a random, boring event that would cause an impatient reader in a bookstore to close the book and pick up another. But once it gets started, it delivers an entertaining murder mystery with a brilliantly developed antagonist. A brute who sucks the air out of the room and makes you feel just as uncomfortable as the characters who have to deal with him. There’s a silly subplot involving stolen bikes that was distracting and unconnected to the main plot; it felt like fodder to up the word count. But the main plot driven by the likable Detective Wolf more than makes up for it. Looks like a winning book series for mystery lovers.

Another great book by Jeff Carson

I have recently discovered Jeff Carson and the David Wolf mysteries. I bought the first, and enjoyed it so much I read the rest of the series back to back. I've been waiting with anticipation for High Road to be released. David Wolf is like the guy next door, a well developed character that you want in your circle of friends. I did have a bit of nostalgia for everyone back home but I know they're all still there, and we'll definitely be seeing them again. You will enjoy this book! I've already ordered the next in the series. Can't wait to see what David's up to next!

Fifteen books and I still love David Wolf. I just wish Jeff Carson could write faster.

David was asked to find out who killed the sheriff of a neighboring town's son and keep that sheriff under control. And since David and Clark Mustaine had history they didn't like each other. Needless to say, it didn't work out for Mustaine in the end.

No romance, just a kiss or two, and there was no swearing to speak of.

As for the narration: Sean Patrick Hopkins does such a fantastic job on all the characters' voices, especially David's.

Wolf and his continuous Adventures

Wolf is volunteered to go to a small town and help with the investigation into the death of a Sheriff's son, the Sheriff happens to be one of Wolf's old football nemises. The sheriff is a hulking man that gets confessions the old fashioned way, he beats or intimidates it out of you. So as the investigation progresses they find that the death may just be a suicide. But Sheriff Mustaine is having none of it, he's going to find out the truth if he has to kill everyone involved. Wolf takes the High Road, to fund out what happened to Bennett Mustaine on The High Road.

Couldn’t put it down

I read as many of Jeff Carson’s books as I can find. As usual, I read it in my off time in two days. I especially love the David Wolf series. David is the man we all want in our lives, trustworthy, honest, thoughtful, kind and the list goes on. All of Jeff’s characters fit in his books and makes one want to move to a small town and get to know the residents. It will be hard to wait for book 16.
Thanks, Jeff, for a few hours to escape out of the present into a word we wish we had.

Well worth the weight

I've grown quite fond of the David Wolf series, high road was very entertaining. Carson has developed into a competitive writer. If you're a fan of Picket and Longmire you will enjoy the David Wolf series. There was a few technical errors, grammatical, that the proof reader missed. It seems the small western towns law enforcement characters are popular, Jeff Carson's series are fun, enjoyable stories. Highly recommend this book as well as his previous Wolf books.

The characters and plot were unrealistic. I expected Wolf to get more assistance from the other officers at the sheriff's office in the town where he went to help find the true facts behind the death of that sheriff's son. I didn't expect the old high school rivalry and animosity to continue at such a level that that sheriff would end up obstructing the investigation and assaulting another officer. The facts of the case weren't looked into carefully at the outset and the story dragged on too long.

Best series of books I’ve read!

I read A LOT and for the last few years, I prefer series. This series, David Wolf, have been my favorite by far! I didn’t think any series would outdo my previous series-Jack Reacher-but I loved these! There were a couple of the books in this series where the flow wasn’t there and the characters acted less than their previous versions, but I enjoyed those nonetheless. I think I have one more book to go- I’ll mourn the ending of the series (I don’t know if future books in this series are coming??).
