I am a lesser? From a servant world? A nobody? What a joke. The man who discounts me is the one who loses. Because me? I know royalty when I see it. They call me the Kingmaker. And I am never wrong.
Even on an alien world, he will do anything to possess me. The Prince of Blades. His world is in shambles. His conquerors have turned against him. All because of a few pesky lessers like me.
I can make him into an emperor. I can fix his fractured world and bring his generals into line. But he might not like who he has to become to win. Us lessers aren't exactly who they thought we were, ha ha. And me? Well, I have a few secrets of my own. And I'll only reveal those to a true king.
Devour the next book in the enthralling, highly-acclaimed Blades of Arris universe. One woman from Earth takes on the king of the conquerors and the universe is never the same!

Best characters of the series so far!! I love how the heroine approached problems and came up with radical solutions. Also the hero is the perfect dose of arrogance. Yes please, dear prince
I just wish there weren't so many steamy scenes? I prefer a couple long detailed scenes over a dozen short ones. The flowery prose was not my thing either. I don't recall the other books waxing poetic, so maybe this is a one-off thing
The third book in the Blades of Arris series has arrived, and it has absolutely delivered. Night had been releasing the first four chapters of the book in periodic newsletters for the past month up until the release date, along with mentioning that beta readers loved Allie as she was a "force of nature", and they were totally spot-on. Allie is the strongest character written so far, and Ranse compliments her in a way that doesn't diminish her character nor her spirit.
Allie, the h, is a former accountant. Not much is known about her life on Humana aside from her work , but she was given the moniker "the kingmaker" by the other women for a very good reason. She has an innate ability to see the potential in everyone and anyone she meets, she possesses an iron-clad bullshit detector, and she has "a disturbing habit of being right". Allie has the same lusteal infection in her blood that the other women have on board the cruiser, but compared to some others , her symptoms are a lot milder. While she still has cravings, the illness also manifests in white-hot rage, a callback to the battle rage that Arrisans experience when given lusteal in the arena. Allie managed to get into her escape pod when the Eruvisans breached their cruiser, and hers was the sole escape pod delivered to the emperor's palace . By the time the narco-stasis wears off and she fully awakens, she has no idea where she is and is equally unaware of the events that transpired while she was in and out of consciousness, but someone is there to help jog her memory...
Enter the H - Ranse, the second son of the emperor of Arris. While he may be royalty, he doesn't act like it. For starters, he's a Blade that trained in the Arsenal. His expulsion to the Arsenal was the result of his father more or less disowning him , and his older brother Erion beginning to turn away from him as they grew older . Ranse owns and operates a prestigious nightclub in Arris Central, and is quite content to continue doing so for as long as possible. As such, he has little involvement and interest in palace affairs, or whatever his father is doing. That is, until the Arsenal is besieged by a potent bio-weapon that was mass-produced by the Vanadisans. When Ranse personally goes to the palace to alert his father, he finds him and his bodyguards murdered by the very weapon that was used against the Arsenal. He also finds Allie's escape pod, and is surprised to see that it's partially open, leading him to the conclusion that the woman inside most likely witnessed the murder of his father. He brings Allie's pod back with him to his nightclub, and fully plans to use her to find out who is responsible for his father's murder . But unbeknownst to him, Allie has plans of her own, and they don't involve idly sitting by while the fate of her planet hangs in the balance. What neither of them realize is that together, they will shape the fate and future of Arris and humans alike...
Allie is the first human to set foot on Arris and Arris Central , and her struggles to navigate the literal new world she's woken up in were illustrated in great detail. While Allie doesn't fear for her safety , many Arrisans don't take her seriously because they see her as a lesser, and many more underestimate her for the same reason . But Allie proves herself time and time again, and shows once and for all that she has every right to be by Ranse's side. And Ranse, to his credit, had his own development. It was difficult for him to see things from Allie's full perspective because she was what Arrisans called a lesser, and Arrisans are taught from very early ages that they were the saviors of the universe and all other races were beneath them. Ranse had always thought of Allie as magnificent and was totally blind to other Arrisans' perceptions of her being anything less than. But once he saw that humans as a whole had a lot more to offer than just food crops from their planet, that they were intelligent beings with capabilities and resiliency that far surpassed Arrisans, was when his perspective changed .
While the Vanadisans are still a villain to the humans and Blades , this book introduces us to the notorious High Commander Orunfax. In the first two books, he had been a sideline villain, working in the shadows but never making a full appearance, but Night outdid herself by painting a villain that was revolting even by Arrisan standards. He controlled the military, and he controlled almost every noble house on Arris , but in the end, thanks entirely to Allie, it all came crashing around him. And despite everything he had done, it turns out he had nothing to do with the emperor's death. There wasn't a clear resolution of what became of Orunfax after the end of the book , and my suspicions are that we haven't seen the last of him yet.
If I'm being honest, I skipped several portions of the book due to the sheer volume of sex. It almost became too much for me, and by the time I was nearing the end, I was skipping full pages-worth of the chapters to avoid the repetition. Night mentioned in her release newsletter that beta readers told her there was too much sex written in the book, so she scaled back on it, but I can only imagine how much was actually in the book if this was what she scaled back to. However, I loved how the characters were written and I loved that she made a dark-skinned black woman entirely independent, badass and steel-willed in her own right. Ranse's suave, cockiness and charm perfectly balanced Allie and they complimented each other so well . This book was absolutely a 5/5 stars for me, and I'm looking forward to the next one in the series. Considering we get to see the return of a character from the first book paired with a human woman who seems to be completely opposite to them , I'm really looking forward to seeing how Night writes them!
Wow, this is another epic read for the series and I'm thrilled that there's more to come :D This story had so much action, adventure, mystery, suspense and steamy romance. It really was a high octane kind of read. I enjoyed how strong these characters were and how their path to love unfolded. Such a great read!
The planet was conquered by brutal alien rulers called Arisians & once earth was defeated they unleashed lasers on the planet after they won, and then designated earth as a food-producing planet. Humans are called “Lessers because they are seen as less than to Arrisians.
Allie is a human from a farming town in Idaho but her journey in this book begins as her & women infected like her are on a months-long voyage to planet Vanadis for a possible cure. The disease they suffer from? A lusteal infection which is an odd craving for sex. .
But Allie has plans of her own. She is hellbent on meeting the Arrisan emporer to bring him to his knees & make him pay for what he has done to earth. Allie thinks Humana has much more to offer the empire than just producing food.
Halfway into their voyage to Vanadis the ship is attacked & all the women are forced into single escape pods to flee Eruvisan pirates. Allie’s escape pods lands not only in Arris Central but right into hot water as she may just be the sole witness to the emperor’s death.
Ranse is an elite Arrisan soldier who has stolen Allie from the palace to find answers on his own.
Ranse + Allie & her lusteal disease is a recipe for some very spicy scenes but they also work well together trying to take down his fathers murderer & rebuild a better empire.
(audiobook) I’ve been waiting for Allie’s, the kingmaker’s, story for a while. To know she would be paired with the emperor’s second son, after what happened at the end of the previous book, made me even more excited. And the author delivers the perfect mix of intergalactic politics and interspecies romance. Chef’s kiss.
Allie, like the other humans she traveled with, has been affected by the lusteal, but with a unique consequence: she becomes super smart when the lusteal is in full effect. She makes connections, finds solutions, guesses outcomes. She’s also bold and confident. She has one objective in the book: saving Humana, her planet, from an orbital change that would destroy it. And to do that, she decides she needs to meet with the emperor, Ranse’s older brother.
Ranse, as the second son, isn’t supposed to become his father’s heir, and he has been pushed on the side all his life. He became a blade, and now he’s running a night club where he entertains guests. But he’s decided that he’ll reveal his father’s murderer, and Allie may be a witness. So basically, when they meet, they’re convinced they’ll use each other to accomplish their goals. But the lusteal derails their plan. They sleep together and bond.
That’s when something unexpected happens, and I was all for it. Ranse, from a race of conquerors, a soldier with blades in his forearms, son of the most powerful man in the universe, submits to a lesser. He trusts Allie with important decisions, changes his home for her, claims he wants to explore her. She has total control over her. I love it when an alpha male devotes himself to the woman he loves.
I don’t want to give away too much about the plot, but let’s just say that Allie has a strong impact on the empire in this book. She basically changes everything. It was an interesting development because Allie is Black, and the slavery subtext wasn’t that subtle this time–the way the Arrisans exploits the universe for their own profit, and think less of other species, etc. So I loved the fact that Allie, of all people, had such power.
It doesn’t happen often, but for me, the narration brought the story down. The male narrator was perfect for Ranse, able to show his softer side as well as his dangerous side. I wasn’t a fan of the female narrator though, especially her male voice. She had some good moments, but oftentimes she droned on. It’s still a very good book but, as much as it hurts me to say, maybe better read than listened to.
Quickie
- Series: Blades of Arris #3 (can be read as a standalone) - Hashtags: #SF romance #fated mates #POC main character - Triggers: violence, deaths - Main couple: Allie & Ranse - Hotness: 5/5 - Romance: 5/5 - + Ranse was so different from the male characters in the previous books, so loving and devoted - it seemed a bit convenient that they all trusted Allie that easily
The Arrisan Emperor has been assassinated and his son Ranse second in line to the throne is determined to find the ones responsible. What he finds is an escape pod containing Allie one of the Lusteal infected humana females ejected from their vessel when it came under attack. Ranse believes she may know something about the assassins of his father and could be the key to his vengeance since her pod was in the room when the assassination occurred. But as with Pandora’s Box when he opens that stasis pod both he and the Arrisan Empire will never be the same again. I really enjoyed how much further this book expands with additional insight into the Arrisan universe and delves even deeper into their societal hierarchy and psyche process surrounding the many species and worlds they consider as lessers. Oranfax and his political manipulations, intrigues and coveting of the Arrisan throne feature prominently in Ranse and Allie’s story but does not detract from their epic in scope storyline which begins to unravel the many diverse threads that are weaved into its extraordinary tapestry of action, adventure and love. YES, lots of steamy, passionate overwhelming love! This was a FANTASTIC read and I was immersed in every delicious larger-than-life well written word that pulls a reader in and WON’T release them until its imaginative high energy narrative has reached the final satisfying page. Allie, you surely are a kingmaker, Amante of Ranse.
I received a free copy of this E-Book via the author and also purchased the retail paperback edition. I am voluntarily leaving a review.
Once again, Starla Night has done it. I typically read paranormal-urban romance, but...OMG...I love this series so much!
Allie is amazing. On the lusteal (I listen to the audio and don't know how is actually spelled), Allie is a force of nature. She's confident, prone to rage, and has not problem pushing people to their limits. Off the lusteal, she realizes how crazy she was and regrets what she promised and done. But, the beautiful thing about the lusteal is that is doesn't alter a person's personality, it seems to amplify it. So, while Allie slowly adjusts to being off the lusteal, we get to witness her growing into her own skin and into that same firey woman with the influence of the metal.
Ranse is just as amazing. He's smart and listens to what people tell him. He's not arrogant but is confident. He knowns his limitations and depends upon others to be do and be better...this includes Allie. She brings out the best in him, and I love it. At moments where you think he is goes to mess up and do something that is toxic-male style, he doesn't, and even Allie is caught off guard at those moments.
Allie and Ranse are a power couple, and I love how the entire empire slowly begins to bow down to the "lesser" humans and actually start appreciating their worth. I also love the mystery of the origin myths, and how with each book, we learn a little more.
I loved Ranse and Allie's book! This is such a great series, and all of the couples are wonderful, but I did think these two were a bit special. I found both of these characters easy to care for and connect with. They each have a bit of baggage and that added an extra underlaying layer of emotion to this engaging story. I thought it was really wonderful to watch these two growing and "becoming" into who they were meant to be. They found the strength to do that in each other and that was a very beautiful thing. The author skillfully combines the emotional and steamy quite cleverly with drama, intrigue, danger, humor, sweetness, action, suspense and heart to create an immersive world that feels different, yet somehow tragically relatable. Pair that with the complex characters that you can easily find pieces of yourself in, and you have a book/series that melts your heart with the feels, has your temperature climbing and makes your pulse race. I do recommend that you read all these books and in order because characters reappear, previous events are referenced and there is an overarching storyline playing out. Since this whole series is amazing this will not be a chore and it will increase your reading enjoyment all the way up to the maximum level. This book ends with a tempting tease of book four and let me just say, O.M.G! I can't wait. I am electing to post a candid review.
Ranse is the Emperor’s middle child and kind of an outcast to his father and brothers, even though he longs to belong. In the midst of a plot on his families lives and throne he learns quickly there is only one woman he can trust. Allie is a woman from earth who leaves her family behind to find a cure for the rage and addictions that the Arrisans mating metal, Lusteal, she was infected with have caused. Allie tries so hard in the beginning to stick to her ideas of what strong feminist woman should be, and then learns that loving Ranse and letting him love and help her, doesn’t make her weak. Together Allie and Ranse’s love changes the fate of the Arrisan Empire, Earth and the “lessers who were also infected by the Lusteal. Steamy and sexy, with a strong female I could relate to quite often, I absolutely couldn’t put it down! This series is a must from start to finish! Starla is a fantastic author, if you haven’t read her other works I highly recommend them. I am SO excited to see what happens next in this series and how the overall story wraps up!
I loved this sci-fi romance. The world building of the Court and Capitol of the Empire was vivid! The politics machinations and dangers of the Court kept the stakes incredibly high, which kept me turning the pages rapidly. The hero was deliciously alpha, and his loyalty was deftly described as both a strength and a weakness. The heroine was also deeply nuanced and sympathetic despite, or maybe because of, her flaws. The characterization of both protagonists in this novel was top-notch. There was plenty of action and explosions to satisfy my hunger for exciting space opera, and the development of the romantic relationship was swoony and sizzling hot. I cannot wait to read the next book in this series when it releases. I highly recommend this whole series so far! Each book is better than the previous one.
I received a free copy of this book, and I am voluntarily writing this review.
This is book and the series is amazing and I loved every page I turned and all the emotions that came with it. Ranse is second in line to the throne after his father was assassinated and he wants to find out who killed him and he finds an escape pod with a female inside and wants to find out what she knows because she was there when it all happened. Allie is a strong independent woman who can influence the people around her and gain there respect and trust. When meeting Ranse she is attracted to him and wants to help him find the truth and to be the man he should be and they call me the kingmaker. There is plenty of action, suspense, drama, growth, thrilling, adventure, passion, connection. There is so much more to this story and the characters are brilliant and the the whole series is a must read.
I received an ARC edition of this book from the author and am voluntarily leaving a review.
4.5 stars
I highly recommend reading the previous books before reading this one. The other books offer background that will make this one better.
This is my favorite (so far) out of the series. I really loved both of the MCs. Ranse originally came across as a bit arrogant, but he was willing to apologize when needed and adapted well to having to change a lot of how he thought of the world and the people he dealt with. Allie certainly lives up to her nickname, Kingmaker. She was spunky and fierce, but we see a bit of vulnerability with her as well. There were so many twists and turns in the story and the pacing kept the plot moving. We get to see a different aspect of the Arrisans with this story. I'm looking forward to seeing what comes next.
Wow! This book did not disappoint. I was really interested in why Allie was dubbed the Kingmaker and of course, I was wondering how they were gonna stop the orbital mover from wreaking havoc on Humana. After Zai's book, the stage was set for Allie to make her grand appearance and she is absolutely fantastic. She is strong, resilient, and so dang smart. I love how starstruck Ranse is by her and how he learns to trust in the bond they have together. Everywhere that Allie goes she influences the people around her and gains their respect. The action never stops and the truth of what Orunfax was doing is unravelled. I hope there are many, many more books in this series. I have enjoyed every single one.
The next Blades of Arris story is hotter, more yummy and full of surprises than ever before! Ranse and Allie are just too freaking AMAZING together! I loved how they met and I loved the tension that sprung up between them the moment Ranse finds Allie in her escape pod. The plot gets deliciously more thrilling as the story goes on and I found myself drawn in with these unique and awesome characters the more I read!
Starla Night's worlds has always fascinated me but I think this sci-fi series is more creative and sexy then her previous series. And the world is very cool and so different. I love it! Ranse and Allie are so sexy and sweet together and the push and pull is divine!
Another great book in this excellent series. Ranse, a club owner, is thrown into mysterious, dangerous, and unexpected situations upon the death of his father the emperor. As he searches for clues regarding his father’s death, he discovers the pod with Allie inside and cannot believe his good fortune, but it is short lived once he learns she does not remember anything. Fortunately, he is in for a pleasant surprise because Allie’s a Kingmaker and her skills, strength and comfort is just what he needs as he navigates through all the betrayal, contempt, and injustice in his life. This steamy well-written with incredible twists story was highly entertaining and a real joy to read.
When Ranse the prince of blades takes over as Emperor for Arris he is in for an action-packed adventure with backstabbing, unpredictability, suspense, mysteries, danger, war, a rescue, and a chance at true love. Allie is rescued from the escape pod and when she shocks Ranse with her brains and beauty, he is not aware just whom he has stolen from the palace and what she will mean to his future. Excellent storyline and characters leap off the pages to keep your attention. For me best in the series. HEA. I read an ARC via BookFunnel without obligation. I volunteered an honest review.
Clever and imaginative! Great, multi-faceted characters. Very interesting plot. Vivid descriptions. Kept me intrigued from the first page to the last. Simply a GREAT read! THIS is how you successfully keep a series interesting and keep your readers wanting more!
*I received a complimentary ARC of this book in order to read and provide a voluntary, unbiased and honest review, should I choose to do so.
Most have underestimated the lessers, however Ranse had high expectations of her. The dynamic is different this time. While for the previous women the lusteal impedes them, it only made her bolder and more aggressive. But she has more merits to her even without the influence of the lusteal. There is still conspiracy and danger. Then there's romance and steamy moments. I love this series. I received an advanced reader's copy of this book and gave my honest review.
This new story in the Blades of Arris series is better than ever! Ranse and Allie are off the chart hot! The storyline is great and characters are pulling you into their adventure! Ranse and Allie are so good together as their chemistry is pulling them together. She ties to escape but he’s not to happy and the rest of the story is WOW! I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
This book has an entertaining storyline, filled with action, adventure and intrigue. The interaction and chemistry between the characters is wonderful. Allie is A kickass lesser and Dance is a kickass blade, together they can do anything. I can't wait for more from this author. I received this book 📚, as a FREE ARC copy to read and I voluntarily leave this review.
Wow, some of the stories that are written about how humans will be great or insane for the Galaxy really get me 😉. This series puts us out there as something not worth the trouble, but we end up trouble anyway 😃. I've truly enjoyed reading this series, so Thanks so much Starla, I look forward to seeing where we go from here 🤓.
I really didn’t think I would like this entry. I don’t care for princes or royalty, in truth. Ranse however, doesn’t act like royalty. At all. What should I have expected from Arrisan nobility? 😅 Clearly not what I expected.
This is one of my insta-buy series. I never regret them. Salivating for the next book. Yes please! 👏🏻
I really love this series. Characters I care about and worlds I want to explore. There is an actual story in this sci fi romance, not the predictable norm. I really hope we get stories for Erion, Jian and Cullus’s son.
This series has become a fast favourite of mine. It's an auto buy. This particular book is slightly different from others in the series, but still has that mix of spice and humour with a original take on a much loved PNR troupe
I could not get into this story. The way it was written and structured was odd to me. The connection between the 2 MCs was non-existent, in my opinion. There was sex and talking about conspiracies, that's it.
Kingmaker is a title I wear with pride when I am aware of the change in my mind. What you need to know is that I'm considered a lesser not worthy of notice from my captors.
This story was "FAB" it can be a little confusing until you figure out what is going on with the female lead but once you do hop on and enjoy the ride.
I provide reviews without obligation to the author just because I love a good book and world needs to know it. This book was given to me at no cost.
