I came to these books via Stefan Zweig's "World of Yesterday"; in that autobigraphy Zweig is clearly in awe of Rolland and his work, in particular "Jean Christophe" and Zweig is proud to be a friend to Rolland. Printed versions of "Jean Christophe" are fairly hard to track down now, although there's an electronic version on Gutenberg. I managed to find a set of the Jupiter paperbacks from 1966 with the 10 novels in 4 volumes. The novel(s) is essentially a bildungsroman from Jean Christophe's birth in around 1890, this volume taking him to his teenage years. There are few dates (it mentions 1909 in Vol3), but it was published between 1908-1913 and was clearly contemporary when written (references to cars, phones, Dreyfus case). At one point in Vol 3 the novel says that Beethoven has been dead "over a century" which would put the date post 1927 - clearly an error. The last volumes contained in Journey's End follow JC's life from about 1910 to 1930; here there is a real flaw - since the books were written in 1910 Rolland has assumed Europe stayed the same from 1910 to 1930. It just doesn't work, the First World War completely changed France and Germany, finished the Austro-Hungarian Empire and then there was the 1917 revolution in Russia. The historical context for Volume 4 is therefore all wrong and caused a real problem for me. There are similar problems musically; since JC is a musician and composer, there are references/discussions to the standard great repertoire from Bach/Haydn/Mozart/Beethoven/ berlioz/Schubert through to Wagner/Brahms/Richard Strauss and Debussy. But there it stops and there's no acknowledgement of the great changes coming with Schoenberg/Stravinsky/Ravel. For the first three volumes the context works and then Volume 4 is completely flawed again.
It's well written, but doesn't have the cast of characters or variety of incident to be truly interesting. There's much dissertation on the value of art and music in society and the betterment of humankind through education; written at a time when education for all was only starting to gaining acceptance in western Europe it shows Rolland's beliefs in human progress.
Reading in the 21st Century Jean Christophe does feel rather dated and would have I feel it would have lasted much better and be more widely read with more variety in the storyline. Compared to "A Dance to the music of Time" or "The Forsythe Saga" it's rather bland. And it is nowhere near comparable to Proust written only a decade later.
It's kept me interested enough to read all 4 volumes (1500 pages). But I wouldn't rush and recommend it to everyone, better to read Miklos Banffy's "They Were divided" trilogy for a good pre 1914 scoiety epic.

Yazar kendisini etkileyen sanatçılar arasında önemli yere sahip olan Beethoven hakkında biyografik bir kitap yazmış; . İşte Jean-Christophe serisi de özellikle çocukluk ve gençlik yılları Beethoven'dan esinlenerek yaratılmış müzik dehası bir karakter hakkında. Alkolik, sorumsuz fakat yetenekli bir müzisyen olan babanın ve iyi gün yüzü görmemiş hizmetçi bir annenin oğlu olan baş karakterimizin bebeklikten başlayarak hayatını takip ediyoruz metinde. Ayrıca kadınlar derinleştirilmemiş karton karakterler olarak kalmış.
Her şeye rağmen okuduğum için mutluyum. İkinci cildin çok daha iyi olduğu söyleniyor. Bir an önce okumaya başlamayı umuyorum.

En dat is waar. "Jean-Christophe" doet denken aan De Thibaults van du Gard.
Wat een prachtige, complete roman!
Er gebeurt erg veel in dit eerste deel. We volgen Jean-Christophe van in zijn prille kindertijd tot in zijn jong-volwassenheid.
De stijl is heerlijk. Alle dingen des levens komen aan bod. Er zit heel veel mensenkennis in en aardig wat maatschappijkritiek.
Enkele citaten:
"Hij overdreef misschien. Het komt vaak voor dat brave lieden niet in staat zijn van een nieuw werk te houden en er twintig jaar later oprecht van houden. Het nieuwe leven heeft een te sterke lucht voor hun zwakke hoofd: de geur moet vervluchtigen in de wind van de tijd. Het kunstwerk begint voor hen pas begrijpelijk te worden wanneer het met het vuil van de jaren is bedekt." (blz.405)
"Al die jonge miljonairs waren anarchisten, zoals het hoort: wanneer je alles bezit is het de opperste weelde om de samenleving af te kraken. Want zo bevrijd je je van wat je haar verschuldigd bent." (blz.414)
Klinkt wel erg actueel, vind je niet?
"Hij begreep niet welke noodzaak zijn landgenoten ertoe dreef zich voortdurend in kudden te scharen, alsof ze niets alleen konden doen: zingen niet, wandelen niet, drinken niet." (blz.439)
Nu is het wachten op de vertaling van deel 2 (najaar 2023) en deel 3 (zomer 2024).

I read Jean Christophe many, many years ago, lying on the morning sand of Ipanema beach in Rio de Janeiro...
It was summer, and while basking in the tropical sun - once in a while taking a delicious swim in the cool ocean - I was aware of the privilege of reading such a gorgeous story.
Somehow, Romain Rolland knew the extraordinary wealth of a musician's mind. The story is very moving, and can inspire all those who love music and its chosen.

Por fin en Noviembre del 2013(Noviembre 2013) llegué a una novela que había estado buscando con ahínco por varios años en varias partes del mundo (no es una metáfora!) ya que en México es sumamente difícil conseguirla, es más, en las librerías no se vende hay que recurrir al "mercado secundario". Novela muy apreciada por artistas e intelectuales del pasado y todavía por algunos amantes de las ideas pacifistas y humanitarias promovidas por el ganador del Nobel en 1915 Romain Rolland, llamado en su tiempo "la conciencia de Europa". Hombre muy reconocido en gran parte del mundo y que no se explica uno cómo es que su obra ha perdido actualidad. En esta novela crea a un personaje entrañable y a la vez titánico. Un ser que logra forjarse en los valores más nobles del ser humano y a costa de un un gran esfuerzo personal. Es un poco la historia elegíaca de un músico en la cual se percibe la sombra del grandísimo Beethoven. Y ahora sigo en busca ahora del tomo 2, ya que es una novela muy extensa.

benim için keyifli, akıcı bir okuma oldu. karakter, olay örgüsü ve yan karakterlerle keyifli bir kitaptı. devamlarını da hemencik okumayı planlıyorum bakalım artık.

I read that "Jean-Christophe" was among the favorite books of young Zionists in Poland during the 1920s, so I will probably have the Polish characters in my new novel read the book and discuss it. There is much about awakening love and the creation of music that is beautifully written and could lead to fascinating experiences and interactions for my young characters.
Rolland won a Noble Prize for Jean-Christophe in 1915. By a strange coincidence, our apartment in Collioure, France was located on Rue Romain Rolland, which was why I bought the book before I knew it had anything to do with Polish Zionists. Rolland has also written a biography of Beethoven.
A FEW QUOTES ...

Life does not hold him yet; always he escapes it. He swims in the infinite. How happy he is! He is made to be happy! It was the sudden eruption of the blind forces of Nature.

Prachtige roman. Ik kijk uit naar het tweede deel. Een heerlijk boek om rustig in te verdwijnen en tegelijkertijd verwijst het naar allerlei levens thema's. Ik herken er ook aspecten van Herman Hesse en mindfulness in. En een sociaal-politiek tijdsbeeld dat lijkt op het onze. Onbegrijpelijk dat het boek zo weinig aandacht heeft gekregen in de kranten en andere media. En het is prachtig vertaald! Ik blijf twijfelen tussen 4 en 5 sterren.

Dit boek mist de diepgang van de Thibaults, waar het met een sticker op de cover mee vergeleken wordt, alleen al omdat er maar één hoofdpersonage is, en de dynamiek tussen de zo verschillende broers mist. Aan het begin had ik het gevoel in een soort keukenmeidenroman beland te zijn, als Jean-Christophe de ene na de andere kalverliefde beleeft, wat vooral aan het begin heel dweperig beschreven wordt. Gaandeweg het boek wordt het echter steeds interessanter: een jonge man, componist, met veel ambities die door zijn kleinburgerlijke omgeving in Duitsland niet goed begrepen worden, doolt door het leven. Ik moest vaak denken aan een poète maudit, zoals Rimbaud, of aan de schilder Van Gogh. De gevoelens en gedachten van Jean-Christophe worden ook steeds volwassener en gerijpter. Daarom ben ik toch benieuwd naar de twee volgende delen van de trilogie, te beginnen in Parijs!

با ژان کریستف در واقع زندگی کردم با جلد اولش خودمو توی دوران کودکی ژان تصور می کردم و به شوق می اومدم با جلد دومش لحظات عاشقانه دوران نوجوانی به یادم می اومد و جلد سومش منو توی غم عجیبی برد اون جا که ژان با سابین آشنا میشه ودر نهایت سابین میمیره
جلد چهارمش پر از موسیقیه جلد پنجمش دوران اوج ژان رو به تصویر می کشه جلد ششم آنتوانت رو یادم میاره با اون زندگی غم بارش جلد هفتم و هشتمش رو متاسفانه خاطرم نیست جلد نهم که عاشق میشه وجلد پایانی کتاب که نقطه اوج نویسندگی رومن رولان رو نشون میده دورانی که ژان شخصیت بر جسته و معروفی شده ولی همچنان ادم تنهاییه با مرگ ژان کتاب هم تموم میشه و تموم اشتیاق من هم همین طور!!

There are several volumes to this book (well, 3 in English and like a dozen in French), a vast belle-epoque account of the creative life that serves as an opportunity for Rolland, a critic and aesthete, to rumble on about culture in general. But it's a fascinating look, a really thorough one, at the world of Parisian culture at a time when it was the center of the world.

I have read this book and line by line sentence by sentence I really fall in love with that. As a Persian, I can say this book has a special place among Iranian. We have the culture based on love and passion as Rumi, Hafif Shirazi, Saadi, Shamlou and so many others still are coming. I should thank Romain Rolland because I think he wrote this book for us.

من جلد اولش رو که خوندم متوجه تاثیر شخصیت ژان بر خودم شدم. وبا شوق خاصی به خواندن بقیه کتاب ادامه دادم.صبور بودن و اعتماد به خویشتن و صداقت داشتن و اینکه هدف رو شناختن و بخاطرش جنگیدن از برجسته ترین فضیلت های اخلاقی این شخصیت و این کتاب بود به عقیده من.

همه رومن رولان رو به خاطر توصیفات دقیقش تحسین می کنن اما به نظر من یه کم خسته کننده است.فقط از اون توصیفات کودکی ژان کریستف خوشم می آد.نگاه کردنش از چشم یک بچه فوق العاده است

Jean-Christophe is another one of those old classics from my reading list. It is billed as a novel of friendship. There are actually three books in this series (or three collections; originally there were ten books), so it is possible that one or both of the later volumes goes more deeply into the idea of friendship than this first book, but in this volume, I didn’t see much friendship, love, or anything else closely related.
Jean-Christophe was born into a family of at least decently talented musicians in Germany. His father has, for reasons neither he nor anybody else understands, married a woman of a lower class. He manages to use this as an excuse for slacking off in his life, and he abuses his wife and later his oldest son.
When he is very young, Jean-Christophe is to a certain extent befriended and mentored by his grandfather and a maternal uncle. His father doesn’t notice him much until he begins to display some musical talent. Then he undertakes to turn him into a musical prodigy. Jean-Christophe does indeed seem to be somewhat more talented than his father, but this only leads to higher expectations and more abuse. At a very young age, he joins the court orchestra. By the time he is a teenager, he is one of the top players. He is paid for this, but not much. This and his mother’s cooking and maid-type work are all that is keeping the family alive by the time his father dies.
Jean-Christophe has, throughout his childhood and youth, one friend (not counting his relatives) and several girlfriends. I thought things would finally get interesting when he met a boy who seemed to be a kindred spirit. However, this friendship quickly developed what appeared to be romantic overtones. Jean-Christophe might not have noticed, but his two younger brothers (with whom he did not get along that well anyway) picked up on it right away and began teasing him about it. Shortly his friend moved away and they no longer saw each other. The whole thing left a bad taste in my mouth. I would have found them less offensive if they had been openly gay.
Next, while the family situation is degenerating, Jean-Christophe has a series of relationships with a variety of girls and young women. I find these too somehow unsatisfactory. He doesn’t treat them especially well, and some of them don’t treat him especially well either. Most of these happen when he is younger, and nothing much comes of them in the end. The one young widow he seems to be more serious about dies before they can do anything.
He has some pseudo-friendships with some young men he comes to work with based on their shared dislike for a certain composer. Finally, Jean-Chrisophe becomes so disgusted that he causes some major damage in the court. To avoid prison, he leaves the country. As this is practically the end, Jean-Christophe strikes up something resembling a friendship with the person who is helping him to get out of Germany. So it does look as if a closer look at friendship will perhaps come about.

Zolang het over de avonturen en de intermenselijke relaties van Johann-Christoph gaat, is dit een prachtig boek over de Werdegang van een muzikaal wonderkind tot een omstreden componist. Jean-Christophe, zoals de verfranste naam van de jonge Duitser luidt, is niet per se een aangenaam mens, maar wel een volbloed kunstenaar, met een ongelukkige jeugd en bijbehorende puberale en egocentrische karaktertrekken. Mijn belangstelling voor het boek haperde alleen bij de hoogdravende passages over Kunst, Muziek en het Kunstenaarschap.
