The book is called "Race of long journeys/distances", and reading it was also a VERY long race to reach the end. The main character was British, i wonder whether the target of the slow pace of events was to highlight the stereotype of the "cold-blooded" British people. Nevertheless, the story itself is interesting, especially that Mounif always keeps the geographic location somehow vague, allowing your imagination to name the place. I think i would have enjoyed the "condensed" version of this book more.
