He has lived abroad for most of his life, yet his fiction is firmly rooted in the village in which he spent his early years. His most well-known work is the modern classic Mawsim al-hijra ila鈥檒-shamal (1967; Season of Migration to the North), which received great critical attention and brought new vitality to the Arab novel.
Salih has not been a prolific writer; his early work, including Season of Migration to the North, remains the best of his oeuvre. He has received critical acclaim in both the west and the east. In Sudan he is without rival, and his writing has played a considerable part in drawing attention to Sudanese literature. Arabic literature has been dominated by social criticism, social realism, and committed literature depicting the bitter realities of life; Salih managed to break with this trend and return to the roots of his culture, capturing the mystery, magic, humor, sorrows, and celebrations of rural life and popular religion.

(I've generated some nasty comments recently to my reviews, the main arguments being I am either unspeakably glib or largely ignorant of actual historical context. Maybe. But I mean well. I hope my shelves show I'm trying to learn about life outside my zip code, and if I have a few intellectual hiccups, I think overall this exercise is working. Maybe. I write this preface because I know some people get angry about their issue. This review is not a lawyer's brief; nor is it a speech by some Heinz magnate (by marriage). This book gave me hope, maybe a moment of clarity.)
What are we missing?
There was 9-11. And, beyond that, every night, a TV screen full of chanting hate. Cat Stevens on youtube agreeing that Rushdie should die. Peace Train, my ass. So, I hardened; easy because I distrust all religions.
Then I flew into the Seattle airport. Three security personnel were there at the gate: three women in Muslim garb. In a U.S. airport. A part of me tightened. A daughter said to me, "Don't be that guy." Thankfully, I am still capable of shame.
What was I missing?
Well, at least the humor. This superb novella - 'The Wedding of Zein' - was hilarious. Not Benny Hill funny; not Amy Schumer funny. But Bartleby funny. Zein is an idiot. And not a handsome one. So, when word gets out that he is marrying the loveliest girl in the village, things turn upside-down.
Yes, it's hilarious.....until it isn't. A miracle happens. Zein, of course, is at the center of it. Not a religious miracle. A spiritual miracle. So I could believe too.
And if I can believe, so can you.

I noticed that almost all of the reviews of this book on 欧宝娱乐 are in Arabic, which I do not read. I don't know if the Sufism which runs through this fable still has any legs. Or is in disrepute. Yet, the story is immediate, the way Bartleby still is.
I keep bringing Bartleby up. Maybe that's what I'm trying to say. I'd take Bartleby to every Moslem country and say, Here, read this, if you think you know me. Like I read The Marriage of Zein, because I didn't know you.

I just finished reading this remarkable novel and I'm filled with that ecstatic, airy joy that comes once in a great while, at the end of a perfect read. Maybe not perfect for you. I can't say. It's a very different story. It's not even supposed to be Salih's 'masterpiece;' is that. All I can say for sure is that I felt the presence of an author who was in complete command of the story he wanted to tell, and that it's like no other story I've read before.
Zein, the titular character, is the village idiot, more a tolerated outsider than a fully integrated member of the village. The story is as much about community as it is the story of Zein and his upcoming, surprising marriage. The community can't believe that any woman would want to marry this odd character--that any woman would consider it. Their bafflement and their ultimate acceptance of this outcome is the narrative that drives the story. Each person in the village, one by one, and finally the group as a whole must come to terms with Zein's humanity. At the wedding feast itself the people finally allow Zein to enter fully into a community of his peers; indeed he becomes the focal point of their shared humanity.
This is a story about acceptance of others. Its theme is that no matter how unusual or impaired a person is, he has a place where he belongs. The Wedding of Zein, a charming short story is an example of African, precisely Sudanese magical realism in literature. The main character, Zein, is a village misfit, for some an idiot even, also not too impressive in the looks department. But he is a kind-hearted man and likes to help people especially these poor and excluded from the community. He鈥檚 also very amorous and the girl who will find herself in the centre of his attention soon will get married. Unfortunately not to Zein.
The novel is unpretentious, warm, funny, sometimes even lyrical. We get some vivid descriptions of folk customs, local beliefs and everyday life in a small village. And if you want to know by what twist of fate Zein will marry the most sought- after girl just find hour or so to read it.

Tajib Salih je klasik arapske literature i jedan od najva啪nijih pisaca Sudana. Ipak, upravo onim 拧to je zavi膷ajno, njegovo delo mo啪e imati i planetarni zna膷aj. Otkrivanje za na拧u sredinu manje poznatih knji啪evnosti uvek mi predstavlja posebnu radost, naro膷ito kad su u pitanju superiorni prevodi, kao ovaj put. Srpko Le拧tari膰 je, prosto, objasnio posao, uspev拧i da Salihu d芒 kvalitet folklornog, vukovskog jezika, ali tako da se nikad ne izgubi i jedinstveni lokalni kolorit. Vanserijski ose膰aj za nijanse u izrazu udru啪en sa zaista zanimljivim fusnotama koje rasvetljavaju najrazli膷itije aspekte sudanske kulture, od obrazovanja preko mernih jedinica do religije, predstavljaju ne samo prevodila膷ki dragulj, ve膰 lep doga膽aj za srpsku kulturu u celini. Odli膷an prevod uspeo je da istakne i odr啪i jedno nesvakida拧nje svojstvo 鈥瀂ejnove svadbe鈥� 鈥� a to je realizam koji nam se, uprkos svojoj slikovitosti, opire. I mada bi neko, na osnovu ve膰ine stranica, mogao svoja 膷itala膷ka o膷ekivanja da formira u odnosu na iskustvo romana 19. veka, u Salihovoj poetici postoji neko tajno zame拧ateljstvo, poeti膷ka mimikrija, koja je u raskoraku izme膽u o膷ekivanja i ishoda. Umesto jednog, centralnog doga膽aja najavljenog u naslovu, 鈥瀂ejnova svadba鈥� je poput pa膷vorka pri膷a, gde je svaka raznobojna zakrpa deo heterogene, ali nekako starovremeno ustreptale celine, koja 膷ak u sebi ima i primese impresionisti膷kog. Sam Zejn, ujedno i za膷udan i kom拧ijski blizak, ima u svojoj pojavi ne拧to nadnaravno, 拧to nipo拧to nije slu膷ajno. Kao figura premosta starog i novog sveta, Zejnova pojava u maloj sredini deo je daleko 拧ire pri膷e koja se ti膷e samostalnosti Sudana, promenjenih dru拧tvenih odnosa, dinamike izme膽u sela i grada, stavova prema modernitetu i nagove拧taja nekih novih perspektiva. Ipak, nema eksplozije revolucije, Salih je, kao knji啪evni majstor, svestan da su fenomeni verodostojniji kada se predo膷avaju kroz sedimente. I zato, uprkos naizgled realisti膷kom utemeljenju sveta, 鈥瀂ejnova svadba鈥� mo啪e postati posebno uzbudljiva tek u prou膷avanju tih podzemnih tokova, uz u啪ivanje u sasvim specifi膷noj atmosferi.

This is what the book is like:
You gather expectantly around a fire, patiently awaiting the sagacious old man with the wild, untrimmed beard to begin his stories. He is unsophisticated and speaks plainly. The stories are tragicomical and a little bit mythical. They are engaging although the old man tends to digress and meander. The stories are subtle and their meaning are not immediately obvious, like a wisdom tale or a fable. As he finishes his stories, you want to know more. But then the old man is gone.
Three stories:
Zein is an oddity, but it is not his choice. He draws attention to himself, sometimes unwittingly. He has a penchant for getting into trouble and trouble finds him. For his deficiencies, he is compensated with unique qualities. But he lacks self-control and abuses his strength. There are other characters, who seem normal, but have their flaws too. The real hero of the story is not Zein but Haneen, a man of peace who brings awareness, repentance and forgiveness to the group.
The doum tree of Wad Hamid is another oddity. For the villagers it represents tradition, their beliefs, their way of life. The government wants to cut it down, replace it with a water pump and a stopping place for the steamer, but the villagers resist. They reject modernization and progress, believing them to be incompatible with their beloved tree. But the truth is told by the narrator, that there was enough room for everything.
The shortest story seems to be about a boy, his grandfather and their wonderful relationship. But the real lesson in the story involves a third character. It is a warning about complacency, indolence, insolvency and exploitation. It has such a profound effect on the boy, that it manifests itself physically.

Tayeb Salih was one of the great Muslim Sudanese writers. Arguably his most famous book, Season of Migration to the North, is super hard to come by - but NYRB has gotten to this one, Wedding of Zein, and I suddenly started feeling like I should read some Muslim authors when that idiot almost started WWIII the other day.
Zein is the village idiot, some sort of ecstatic goofball who ricochets around town crashing weddings and grabbing asses. He sounds awful, frankly. Like, here's an example: he harasses a woman on her wedding night, the woman's brother drove him away, and later Zein almost kills the brother out of pique.听
But it turns out that's not really the story. That's a story. Really, the brother was Seif ad-Din, the shittiest guy in town, who turned out his own father's elderly servant to live in poverty, and Zein's beatdown inspires ad-Din to pull his shit together and become a better Muslim.
Salih weaves stories together like this throughout this deceptively intricate book. Zein's best friend is a Sufi mystic named Haneen. In his introduction, Hisham Matar suggests that Zein is some kind of dervish: Sufi dervishes live in poverty, are known for their ecstasy, and live fully in the moment. Zein does all these things, too.
Also included in this edition are two short stories. In the Doum Tree of Wad Hamid,听rural villagers in a shitty town beset by horseflies protect the tree in their village at all costs. In "A Handful of Dates," a grandson barfs. Both stories are excellent.

This is a collection of two short stories and a novella by Sudanese writer Tayeb Salih, known for his novel A Season Of Migration To The North鈥揳 personal favourite of mine, which is widely regarded as an African classic. In these stories, as is done in A Season Of Migration To The North, Salih explores the lives of people in rural Sudan. His settings are along the Nile, centering Muslim and agricultural communities. In the eponymous novella the story revolves around a village's reaction to the wedding of Zein. Because of social class (impoverished) and his perceived ugliness Zein is relegated to that position (whose words I loathe to use) of village idiot. So when it is announced that he is to wed one of the prettiest girls in the village also from one of its most prominent families, of course, the village erupts into chaos.
The true gem in this collection is the short story, nestled in between the novella and the first short story, called A Handful of Dates. An exquisite tale of disenchantment as a young boy discovers the cruelty and greed of his grandfather.

The central character is the gawky, lanky, toothless, and comedic village buffoon, Zein. The villagers are shocked with the announcement that not only is Zein getting married, but he is marrying one of the most beautiful and eligible girls in the village. In this delightful story, Tayeb Salih introduces us to a motley crew of villagers鈥攁 Sufi mystic; a wayward, now reformed son; an orthodox Imam; the beautiful and pious Ni鈥檓a; the village elders who mete out justice; and, of course, Zein. Treated like a harmless village idiot, Zein鈥檚 antics are a source of raucous laughter. His vociferous declarations of love for some of the village girls attract potential bridegrooms鈥攁 service that makes Zein popular with mothers of marriageable age daughters who welcome him as an emissary of love.
In spite of his antics and tomfoolery, Zein has a heart of gold, a quality recognized and appreciated by Haneen, the Sufi mystic, and by Zein鈥檚 future bride, Ni鈥檓a. Zein lives his faith. He looks after the destitute, the lame, and the outcasts. He entertains children and is quick to offer a helping hand to any who need it. The villagers gradually realize Zein is not such an idiot, after all. They dance, sing, clap, and stomp in celebration during his nuptials while he stands at the heart of the circle, the linchpin that holds the story鈥攁nd the village鈥攖ogether.
Tayeb Salih鈥檚 enchanting story unfolds with gentle humor and kindness toward the inhabitants of his village. His story illustrates community, neighborliness, compassion, shared responsibility for the well-being of others, repentance, forgiveness, transformations, and acceptance of diversity. It celebrates the differently abled and the beauty that lies beneath physical attributes. This heart-warming tale, beautifully translated by Denys Johnson-Davies, exudes warmth and wholeness and a nostalgia for a time when life was simpler, when people cared about each other, and when all was well with the world.

Contains the novella 'The Wedding of Zein' and two other short stories. The two short stories were okay, nothing special. The novella itself is a beautifully written story about a most unlikely hero. The prose is sometimes abrupt to the point of being jolting and other times magically lyrical. This contrast kept me glued to the pages and eager to reach the conclusion. However, I feel that the short length didn't allow enough opportunity to flesh out the story more fully, with the result that the last one third didn't feel as good as the first two thirds.
