Natsuki Takaya (高屋 奈月 Takaya Natsuki, real name Naka Hatake) is the penname of a Japanese manga artist best-known for creating the series Fruits Basket. She was born on July 7, 1973; (Tanabata). Takaya is left-handed and once revealed that she wanted to be a mangaka since first grade, when her sister started drawing.
She was born in Shizuoka, Japan, but was raised in Tokyo, where she made her debut in 1992. She enjoys video games such as the Final Fantasy series or Sakura Wars, or working on her different manga series, such as Fruits Basket, which is the second best-selling shōjo manga ever in Japan, and the top selling shōjo manga in North America. Fruits Basket has also been adapted into a twenty-six-episode anime series.
In 2001, Takaya received a Kodansha Manga Award for shōjo manga for Fruits Basket.
According to Takaya (in a sidebar of a Fruits Basket manga volume), she enjoys drawing girls (girly ones) more than she does boys. Takaya also enjoys electronics and music, but dislikes talking about herself. Also revealed in a sidebar of Fruits Basket, Takaya broke her drawing arm (left) after Fruits Basket volume six was published. She had to go into surgery, and as a result, had put Fruits Basket on a brief hiatus. Takaya made a full recovery, but complains that her handwriting had gotten uglier, due to the surgery. During her hospital stay, she gained an interest in baseball.
So disappointed. There was no real closure for me. I’m honestly not sure of the point of this volume. The three musketeers story arcs were boring, and the character vignettes were too short. I was hoping for so much more.
I felt the third volume years ago ended strange and in 2022 they announced a printing of a fourth volume, which I hoped would wrap it up better.
Annoyingly I've been left disappointed in the sense that the series didn't come to a decent conclusion.
The addition of the three musketeers segments were quite pointless. Surely I'm not the only one that feels this way? I'd hoped she might have written some stories about their youth a little more.
I feel like 3 stars is generous, but there's a nostalgia factor here, so....(?_?)━☆?.*???
Is this really the way it ends? It makes me wonder what the point of starting a sequel with a new Tohru-esque girl was in the first place. We get no closure for her, and in this (final?) volume, we barely get a decent ending to what little story there was for the next gen Sohmas. It's very disappointing.
Then the Three Musketeers stories are a waste. The characters themselves say it's pointless and they aren't wrong.
After that, we get short scenes that take place with the original characters and last a few pages for about half the book. A few made me smile, but really, as a whole, this volume is boring (pretty much also summed up during the Three Musketeers arcs).
I think the fans who rallied around this and got excited for new manga and new anime deserved better than we got in book form. I've started the anime and do enjoy it, but this "Another" trip is ultimately a confusing and unfinished let down.
I had to read the very end of the series, it's very wholesome. The only thing I'm wrestling with is defending Akito. I just never get used to people who have done horrible things to others apologizing in earnest. At least it appears the her child is much better put together and cared for than she was. The bubble that told us how she learned to properly care and love when she met Shiki was very heartwarming, and the notion of Shigure and Akito leaving the hole in the wall after Shiki punched a hole it did make me giggle. I hope they got it framed.

While it was good to see character that I love from the previous series in the extras, I have no idea what the extras were supposed to be about… They seemed overall meaningless and really short. As for the current story, it didn’t feel like this was an ending. They touched on some important issues and plot points and even hinted at a relationship, but it just ended abruptly.
I desperately wanted to like this for the sake of nostalgia, interesting new characters, and hinted queer rep but alas....this "conclusion" was anticlimactic.
There was no resolution for any of the main cast, the plot that was slowly being built meant nothing, and a majority of this edition were short stories rather than the actual thing.
Maybe in the future more volumes will be written? Hopefully? For proper closure at the very least.
Yay to more Matsuki and Hajime scenes though. They should kith.
i will never not love a fruits basket volume tbh tho i didn’t really care about the last chapter since i read the other three so long ago i barely remember what happened but my volume included all the bonus chapters plus the 3 musketeers arc so i had fun reading about all the older characters
The series ended with book 3. Don't waste your time on this volume. Only a very small portion of it is actually related to the story, and it's not even a real conclusion. The remaining 75% of it is just extras. A shameless cash grab. So disappointed.
Love! I just wish this story was longer--I wanted to see more, and was a little let down by the second half of this volume being extras from the original series (but also I'm not complaining about more content with the OGs!)
Yeah no. I will never leave this world. Nobody can drag me out of it. I’m in denial. It’s not over. It can’t be. My therapist is gonna hear about this.
This book is mostly extra content from the three musketeers and bonus comics that hadn’t been released in English yet. The first chapter (and two small bonus chapters at the very end) has to do with the actual story of Fruits Basket Another.
It’s fun- that’s why it gets this rating. I went into it knowing that this was this volume’s set-up. The first chapter was very sweet, the pivotal moment in the story, and explained a lot of things, so it wasn’t to be missed for me.
This really should have been sold as a fan book or something. It wasn’t a real addition to the Fruits Basket Another story…only a chapter. Then a special additions to commemorate DVD releases.
It’s just not a meaningful enough conclusion. It’s realistic, but it felt like the story just kinda… let go? And tried to cover briefly any and all topics it had left. The Three Musketeers stuff filling like half the volume doesn’t help (and I love the trio!). The subtle conclusion about Hajime and Mutsuki’s relationship being potentially romantic was a fun hinted through-line to see pay off. I guess Tohru/Yuki shippers (and any brave Yuki/Kyo shippers) still won indirectly in the end ?
not shiki making me feel bad for akito? i do really like that akito and tohru stayed friends tho, that’s cute?
i was so happy seeing hatori again but the three musketeers arc just felt too long and unnecessary? tho i did love seeing kyo being protective over tohru against shigure… MY HEART??
i liked the bonus scenes we got and it was a lot of fun, i just wish we got to see more of the new generation as i really enjoyed their characters and i really wanted to see more of sawa and shiki!!! they were so cute??
Many manga will come and go, but Fruits Basket will always hold my heart and be my favorite one. I never believed FB would be rebooted let alone finished, and then when I saw Takaya had written Fruits Basket Another I could not believe there were more. The last of those came out in 2019, the anime ended in 2021, and last year we got a beautiful movie of Tohru's parents that were cut from the adaptation. I thought it was done, I thought I had seen it all, the GASP that erupted from my lips when I saw there was something new when I last went to B&N was so loud my friend was definitely concerned for me for a bit until she realized what it was. I couldn't BELIEVE there was more, I could cry.
However let me be honest and preface this is not quite what I expected/wanted, but tbh I am so starved for FB content I will take anything. I had to look up the last chapter of FB Another when I first finished Vol 3 because I couldn't believe it wasn't published, but here it is. Along with the other mini-series, the very bizarre Three Musketeers Arc and some added bonuses. So for those that aren't insane like me and looked up any content they could get their hands on, this is an entire bind of of new stuff, for me it was only half new, but that doesn't mean it wasn't wonderful. It is a very strange construction though, but still wonderful.
So first we get the end of FB Another which I utterly adore, though I HIGHLY recommend re-reading that series (it's only 3 books) before finishing this off as while I remembered most of it, aside from our main couple and Yuki/Kyo's boys that are basically spitting images of them, I couldn't remember who every offspring belonged to as there's so many and they all have a grab-bag of characteristics from their parents lol. It's still adorbs, but I was a bit lost.
I'm not a fan of the Three Musketeers Arc, it's just Shigure, Hatori, and Ayame reminiscing about events post-FB and being super meta about whatever season of show the TV just released or Blu-rays that are now available. While I adore Aya, it's a bit too much of him, though I did love him and Shigure doing their signature 'all right!' thumbs up and Shigure trying to tease Kyo about Tohru who would normally be flustered and embarrassed over loving her, but is now like 'back the fuck off my GF, so what if I'm protective?' which I love with my entire being, give me all the Kyohru content, I will devour every morsel. But it doesn't really go anywhere other than poking fun in meta ways, and we get to see older Momiji which is fun, but yeah that's about it.
The rest are bonus scenes that take place after their respective manga volume, though these are the new bind-ups, though it doesn't have one for every one so it's not an exact science, but I could tell with context what was happening. That was really great because I adore the extra scenes. My standouts was the bonus after they went to the bathhouse and Tohru thanked Kyo for coming and he's so flustered and confused why she'd want him there and it's so damn cute. I also loved after the summer vacation at the Sohma house (where Akito rained on everyone's parade lol) that Tohru reassured Momiji that she had a wonderful time and was so thankful to be invited and he says something along the lines of he loves spending time with her and Shigure remarks to Kyo he's lucky Momiji still looks like a baby because it could really feel/look differently if Momiji looked his age from the get-go AKA he'd be real competition for Kyo in Tohru's affection which is so fucking funny and the dummy doesn't get it while everyone knows he's in love with her, I'm obsessed. And then I loved Hatsuharu and Rin just being snuggly and smitten in bed, Haru is everything to me and SO fine, like even though Kyo is my favorite Haru is the one I'd date and I just loved it. And then I adored baby Kureno and Shigure bonding over books, clearly before they had animosity towards each other, and it's so sweet to see Kureno light and happy for once.
The last two bonus entries are about Shiki (Shigure and Akito's son) and Sawa aged up a couple years and CLEARLY happily dating and it warms my heart so damn much. I adore every single character in this universe so damn much, ugh I'm just so happy it exists.
So yeah, while the construction of these stories are a bit disjointed and all over the place, I do also understand that Takaya was looking for a place to put and publish all of her extra content, so I understand finding a way to fit it all into one package makes sense. I'm very happy to own this stunning completed set and will hungrily consume any more scraps she graces me with, I just love this series with my whole heart. It'll always be my favorite, I'm so happy it exists.
What makes Furubana a brilliant next generation sequel is that Takaya is not shying away from the longterm effects of a toxic and abusive family environment. The Sohma family didn't become magically all good; the hurts of the past are not nothing, just because the characters started to heal. It has been over 20 years since the ending of the manga in Furubana but the children still feel the effects of those years:
The bonus story about Mutsuki's childhood where Yuki cries because his son feels happy in his home floored me. It hurt me in a good way but it still hurt.
Hajime hating his single blood related grandparent speaks volumes about what kind of a presence Kyo's father still has in their life.
The way some people take their hatred of Akito out on Shiki, and how they are targeting the child, while they probably never dared to stand up to Akito during the time she reigned in horror, is so terribly realistic.
The mention about how Machi's parents are still assholes.
Akito still doing penance, holding herself accountable, not hiding the truth from her son, and also healing from her own childhood while raising him.... so so good.
And the children!! Their personalities, the way they are so close to each-other and also understand how their family is fucked up but working to be better. They are suffering some of that trauma, because they cannot escape it, but they are not wounded the way their parents were, and I love how they try to help Shiki, who is so much more affected than anyone else.
And like it's also so funny. Mutsuki having the personality that is a mix of Ayame and Kakeru and a bit of Shigure is hilarious. Everyone calling Hajime dad is comedy gold. Everything Kinu. That single panel of Hana threatening to come to the school festival. Shigure and Akito thinking its hilarious that Shiki got angry and punched a mirror. Every kid clueing in on the fact that Shiki and Sawa had crushes on each-other, except Sawa.
I also love Sawa, she is a good choice for the new heroine and that Takaya decided to make the single mother this time the worst and the way the information about her was revealed. I thought it was very well done.
Healing is the main theme of Furube and Furubana and it is one of the best stories, I've ever read about it.

A generous 2.4 stars, Fruits Basket Another, Volume 4 offered all but one (1) chapter of development by way of closure for our Furubana cast before... devolving into side content? Jokes? Meta memes and character vignettes that left much to be desired? But oh, that one (1) chapter of development... how very lovely you were ?.
I enjoyed the (very brief) exploration of Akito post Furuba, and it was interesting to see the true depth of Shiki's character, and how Mitoma fits right into the space of his heart that is open to try again, and, like a gentle hug, expands that horizon more and more with every passing day. The relationships in Furuba and Furubana will always be top tier. I also quite enjoyed Hajime and Mutsuki's scenes, I'm a sucker for those two, I fear. However, because it was a net total of one (1) chapter, there was not much to see at all.
An afterthought of a volume, truly. I'd only be disappointed had the rest of Furubana been of Particular Quality, but because it was all middling, an unsatisfying end isn't exactly damning, though I cannot, in good conscience, rate it a rounded 3 stars.
As for the spin off content, it was mostly fluff and filler that baited my love of the original characters but also failed to include the characters I cherished the most (Hatsuharu, one day I will have more content for you, king. Machi and Yuki where were you,,,), so it was easy to breeze through but nothing to hold me at rapt attention. I kept waiting for... more, I suppose. But more was left in prior volumes and original series.
Not quite disappointed but not quite surprised, I'm mostly just still a little baffled that there wasn't a, like, conclusion to both this sequel series and the Fruits Basket canon as a whole.
Loved the part where Mutsuki talks to young Shiki about the hate notes he’s been getting about Akito. And just how Shiki describes the tension he has - of loving his mother so much, of constantly hearing hate and criticism of his mom and him, of being attacked by his grandmother Ren, of hearing Akito tell him as a child the story of the curse and how Akito hurt others and is seeking to atone for it, of understanding how all his cousins who care for him are part of families that have been hurt by Akito. I also loved the parts where we see snippets of what happened to the older Sohma generation after the curse - small stories of Hiro/Kisa, Rin/Haru, Ritsu, Kagara, Momiji, etc. Plus past stories, like young Kureno with young Shigure (what a pairing). The ending was nice in tying together the two generations - showing Shiki giving Sawa homemade cookies and Shiki’s parents texting Tohru/Kyo about it LOL, but that Kyo/Tohru family scene with Hajime’s younger siblings GOT ME, I was like ahhhh because we love family scenes for them after everything they’ve been through!
I only rated this four stars because some of the short stories got confusing when just thrown into the middle, and I feel like the 3 musketeers arc (Shigure, Hatori, and Ayame), which went on for a good chunk of the middle section, didn’t have a point. It was meta in showing significant places from the original series but I feel like the pages could have been used better to show us other characters or parts of life and not just those 3 talking, especially Ayame talking nonsense.

1. Last chapter of Fruits Basket Another—i'm so glad to have gotten to know Shiki. And i'm so glad to know that his parents are still surviving, and that their unhealth has produced such a kind, sensitive, and sensible child. i grieve for Aki-chan's isolation and am so grateful that Mutsuki and Co. are looking after her baby. He is such a sweetheart.
2. Three Musketeers—i was saying months ago, early in my reading of the original manga, that i would love a side story of these guys doing absolutely anything, just being themselves. i slightly regret that now. XD Aya and Shigure can be exhausting and tedious when they don't have rails. It's a shame that Hatori doesn't have the emotional energy to put them back on the rails; Aya at least would for sure listen to him. But of course he does not have that energy. These were so silly to read, and i loved seeing them all again and seeing them together, but i feel triply bad for Hatori now. (However, seeing Aya repeatedly call Shigure the root of all evil was hilarious, as was Hatori screeching to a halt when Shigure expressed a regret. These guys are so themselves.)
3. Bonus manga—i loved these so much. The one with Kureno and Shigure made me cry. Now that i have them on hand i'm going to have to read them along with the anime when i watch it again.
Some parts of this book had me laughing like I haven't in a long while, like the way I used to laugh at the antics of the original series. The glimpses of characters like Hatori, Momiji, Rin, and Hatsuharu were especially nice, because they will each always hold a special place in my heart. But I really would have liked seeing more of the story we were getting, which felt like it was ended abruptly by this bonus manga. The final look at Shiki and Sawa that we were given was honestly pretty perfect, though. ????
I was confused about the addition of this Volume 4 from the moment I realized it had been published, and I do not think I felt passionately enough about seeing more of Furubana during my first read of it. But I reread each volume of of it, just to refresh my memory for this one. It turns out, I probably did not need to do that, given what this volume actually was. It was too much Three Musketeers even for me, who has loved the original series since it was actively still releasing in manga form in the United States. Also, can Hatori even drive?! He is partially blind, no? I am trying to think back to other times he drives.
In the end, I will just take this volume as a gift of more of Natsuki Takaya's art to keepsake, almost like the Year of the Cat fan book that was released post-end of the manga. ?

Fruits Basket Another Vol. 4 was a nice conclusion to the series and includes two Three Musketeers Arc stories set near the end of the original series.
With the Sohmas annual fall picnic approaching, Sawa Mitoma receives an invite from Shiki Sohma to attend. And now is the perfect time for the Sohma heir to reveal his feelings about his family and about Sawa.
This volume of Fruits Basket Another is a bit different from the others as it includes the final chapter of the story and a bonus story about Sawa and Shiki with the rest of the book being about the original series characters. The conclusion of the series felt like it was lacking something and it ended pretty abruptly. It definitely felt like there could have been a few more chapters to fully wrap everything up. I will say I find the idea of a romance between Sawa and Shiki to be a bit odd as Sawa is 16 but Shiki is only 13. It just seems like he's too young and I wasn't a huge fan of that.
The majority of this book is made up of the two Three Musketeers Arc stories which follows Ayame, Hatori, and Shigure. These two stories are set near the end of the original series or right after it and while they were fun, they didn't really add much. The book also included short bonus scenes about the original characters and those were definitely my favorite part of the book. It was nice revisiting the characters although I wish those scenes were a bit longer.
Overall Fruits Basket Another Vol. 4 was an enjoyable read and I would recommend the series to fans of the original.
well, that's all. All the fruba content I will ever read has been read. I just wanted to see Tohru and Kyo again but they never showed us faces!! I at least got to see Tohru's back but I wanna see their daughter so bad. Like give us a Tohru lookalike why does only Kyo get a lookalike but their son Hajime is so <3<3 he is straightforward but also more gentle than Kyo (which isn't saying much Kyo was so brash as a teenager). Anyway, I think I am glad I read these because I got to know more about Akito and see how she's doing and it's not all bells and whistles now that she is suddenly 'good'. But it was really really sad. But still I am glad about her having Shiki and her discovering things and feeling things in motherhood. [I love that hanachan and uochan call her aa-chan- like that's insane]. Oooh, I LOVED the bonus manga with Shigure and Kureno. I feel like Kureno could have been a character that I would have liked if it wasn't for Arisa plotline. But still, theirs isn't as bad in the age-inappropriate relations in the manga because Kureno was always so isolated and feels very emotionally stunted. I really want Hajime and Mutsuki to date, can you imagine Yuki and Kyo as inlaws?????
Thank you Takaya sensei for these characters and these stories!
Fruits Basket Another follows Sawa Mitoma who ends up becoming friends with the kids in her school that are part of the Sohma clan. I love this series and the original so much so I'm sad to see it at an end. I absolutely loved this volume as it wrapped up the story and also gave us a look at some of the older characters we had come to love. This book includes bonus manga that was included with the DVD release of the seasons of the original Fruits Basket and small one shots of the original cast. I loved being back in this world and enjoying this story. It brought me so much joy to just sit and read this manga. I have always loved the art style for this manga so much and this volume was no different. I am sad that this manga series is over but I am happy to display it on my shelves. Overall, I adored this manga and I can see it being one that I go back to time and again to enjoy.
3.5 stars! It's a shame that this one wasn't as good as the three that came before it (which I gave five stars each). The ending felt very abrupt, and the series as a whole couldn't seem to decide if it wanted to have a real plot or not. It would have been with a plot or without one, but being stuck in the middle just left me unsatisfied.
The bonus chapters made up most of the volume, and they were pretty cute. It was nice to see the main crew again to fill the void in my heart after finishing :') I definitely preferred the anime special chapters over the three musketeers arc. I was tired of Ayame's rambling after just a few instances, and then I looked a bit ahead and realized that I would have to sit through it for the entire arc...so that could have been done a little better imo. Can't wait to see what Natsuki Takaya does next!
A 4.75 instead of 5 because I enjoyed the bonus content a lot more than the main storyline. I mean the finale to the storyline was only one chapter long. Definitely felt like it needed to be longer for things to wrap-up and be a proper ending. I also couldn’t remember who everyone was because there’s so many kids introduced in this series lol
But it’s been such a fun time seeing how loved all of these kids are because they are so so loved, and seeing how all of them are so close makes my heart warm.
And that bonus content!! I loved seeing all of the original characters again whether it be snippets that took place in the original timeline, or taking place now and having only their backs shown. The original characters are just the best.
I wish there had been more. There was one REALLY long chapter to wrap up the series and it bounced around alot. It felt rushed and considering it was just the start of the book, it shouldn't have. Then you get to Anime introductions....with Hatori, Shigure, and Ayame. I skipped through all of "The Three Musketeers" chapters because it just felt like the Ayame spotlight and was super annoying and hard to follow. The bonus Mangas at the end were.....okay, I'm glad the last one at least went back to Sawa and Shiki. But this book felt more like an advertisement for the anime and I wish that would have been done separately and the author would have actually given Sawa, Shiki, and this generation an ending like the first generation got. Disappointing.
