Yet his eye didn't remain closed for long¡ªsoon it snapped open once more as a pair of arms suddenly circled him from behind and caught him in a forceful embrace.
Xie Lian buried his face in Hua Cheng's back, but he didn¡¯t speak either. Though nothing was said, it was enough.
Xie Lian had always believed in "forever¡±¡ªfriends would always be friends forever, with no betrayal, no deception, no breaking up. Perhaps there would come a time when they had to part, but it wouldn't be for a reason like "things got too horrible."
It was too humiliating. There were voices all around Xie Lian, high and low, filling the air and invading Xie Lian's ears. He stared with eyes that couldn't be wider at the blackened ground in front of his nose, then he slowly raised his head. Mu Qing was standing not too far away from him¡ªstanding among those heavenly officials, his head turned away, not looking at Xie Lian. Just like the rest of them, he had no intention of lending Xie Lian a hand to help him up.
And thus, Xie Lian understood. No one would lend him a hand to help him up.
He had a vague yet terrifying feeling that, should he allow them to do this, he might lose a part of himself that would never return.
Xie Lian wanted to wail with the most devastating sound, but his throat couldn't gasp out a single word¡ªit had probably already been sliced through. He wanted to thrash wildly from the pain. It was like suffering the sum agony of countless lifetimes, and he didn't know if he'd be able to feel any other pain again.
Rather than dragging it out, slowly grinding away all the kindness and friendship like sharpening a knife until nothing remained¡ªuntil they loathed the sight of each other¡ª it was better to make it explode now.
Before Feng Xin left, Xie Lian had been afraid. Now that Feng Xin was gone, he wasn't scared anymore.
But even though he no longer felt fear, he felt a deeper agony.
He could only pray that someone would come right that second to take his life and help him break free from this endless pain and torture!
¡°To die in battle for you is my greatest honor.¡± Xie Lian was stunned. (¡) ¡°I¡¯m sorry,¡± he replied. ¡°Forget me.¡± The nameless ghost¡¯s flickering flames flared brighter. ¡°I won¡¯t forget. Your Highness, I am forever your most devoted believer.¡±
[...] a pair of arms suddenly circled him from behind and caught him in a forceful embrace.
Xie Lian buried his face in Hua Cheng's back, but he didn't speak either. Though nothing was said, it was enough.
It was a long time before Xie Lian felt the man he was hugging turn around. Hua Cheng fervently returned the embrace, engulfing Xie Lian in his arms.
From above his head, Xie Lian heard Hua Cheng's staggering response. "Dianxia... You really will... be the death of me."
Hua Cheng puffed a breath into his ear. "I'll lend Dianxia a bit of spiritual power in case of emergency..." he whispered. "Won't you accept it?"
Xie Lian unconsciously gulped. "Th-this is 'a bit'?" he stuttered. "It seems like too much... I haven't... I haven't paid you back for all the thimes before..."
"It's not that much. And there's no rush," Hua Cheng said. "Take your time paying it back."
One of Hua Cheng's arms suddenly snaked around Xie Lian's waist and pulled him into his arms, and he lifted Xie Lian's chins gently with his hand. And then, Hua Cheng enveloped Xie Lian's lips with his own.
They kissed and embraced for a long time in the snowstorm before their lips slowly parted.
It took some time before he was able to turn onto his side to curl up, hugging himself.
"So cold," Xie Lian whispered.
His voice was tiny, scared that someone would overhear. But the ghost fire did hear, and it came flying. It pressed itself against his body, its flames immediately much brighter than they had before. It was burning itself up with all it had.
In his daze, Xie Lian thought he could hear a tiny voice.
The voice seemed so close and yet so far, like it was coming from a waking dream. It cried in despair, "Oh God, please wait for me, just wait for me... Please give me a little more time... Let me... Let me..."
Xie Lian felt the rim of his eyes grow hot, and his vision went blurry.
"I'm sorry," he replied. "Forget me."
The namelss ghost's flickering flames flared brighterer. "I won't forget. Dianxia, I'm forever your most devoted believer."
"What is your name?"
He remained silent for a moment, then the black-clad young man replied, "I do not have a name."
Xie Lian didn't push further. "No name would make you 'Wuming'."
"You may call me whatever you desire," Wuming said.
Xie Lian said, "Then follow me." He extended his hand to Wuming. "I will give you what you want."
Wuming0s face was also hidden behind a mask, so his expression couldn't be seen. They were indeed the same.
A long moment later, he vowed sincerely, "I swear to die following Your Highness."
Xie Lian, however, pulled back his hand and tucked his arms into his sleeves. He turned around and said coolly, "You're already dead. Come."
As he walked, Xie Lian suddenky noticed a tiny red flower on the side of the road, which looked absolutely precious. He crouched to gently touch its petal, feeling quite cheerful.
"I hope we shall meet again," he said to it.
Even after he had disappeared into the distance, the tiny red flower still danced in the wind.
