This collection of short stories contains a whole lot of different elements within it, just like the title hints. The characters are scary, and normal, and scared, and pathetic, but most of all they are largely normal people in abnormal situations. The characters are rounded and real, and I found myself often empathizing with them, though following the train of thought of the narrators could be treacherous.
In the first story, 'The Sunflowers', the narrator is self-aware, a rare thing in horror stories, and he considers all horror elements he knows of in order to get himself out of his predicament. 'Morning, in the News' presents the reader with a fascinating idea of beard growth being connected to the outside world and its calamities, and how the protagonist deals with the situation. In 'Who Do I Off?' there is humour, and horror, and books, which is always a great combination, while being one of the lighter stories in the collection. 'Winter Worries' tells the story that many bartenders have dreamt of, while 'Scrap Metal Collection' highlights the lengths to which some people would go for money.
Altogether, a balanced and fascinating collection of stories.
