S1 is focused on building the foundations of this story while S2 focuses more on the development of the plot and the relationships between the characters. I enjoyed S2 a lot more because the characters were more mature, the storyline was progressing smoothly and the art had improved a lot.

There were a number of scenes that caught me by surprise as the secrets and pasts of the characters were revealed. There was a lot going on in S2 but it didn't feel overwhelming because the author took the time to explain what was going on. Some things were more subtle than others but eventually, things start to make sense. The thing about Laliette (FL) not being blood related to her family explained why it seemed like her brother Lehan had romantic notions for her, which weirded me out but then it was revealed that he had long known Lali wasn't his real sister. I mean, it still weirded me out but whatever.

And Rupert's (ML) past was f*cked up. I don't want to be an apologist but he truly had a terrible childhood. He never knew his father and only had his mother. But his mother was twisted and she didn't love him; she neglected him then abused him as a child and finally he had to witness his mother's death by suicide. But that's not all. Oh no, far from it. The emperor had loved Rupert's mother so much that he forced Rupert to use alchemy to reanimate her corpse and for years, Rupert had had to oblige the emperor and watch the insane emperor keep his dead mother by his side. Like when I read that, I wasn't surprised that he turned out the way he did. No one had given him love and warmth, no one had taught him how to be give and receive affection. He was a product of his environment and circumstances and he didn't know better. Lali also realised that she was the only person to treat him with some semblance of affection and warmth, even though she was doing it for her own survival. As a reader, I felt bad for him but I was also somewhat relieved when Lali, who learned about Rupert's past, still couldn't and wouldn't forgive him for murdering her and her entire family in her previous life.

This brings me to my next point: I absolutely enjoyed the complex relationships the characters shared. Lali had to learn the hard way that her father wasn't the upright and honest person she had always believed him to be. When previously, she thought that her family was unjustly killed by Rupert, this time around she had to come to terms with the fact that her father and brother were hiding many secrets from her, that were probably the cause of their deaths previously. Then the switch up in Lali's friendship with Riche and Tori, which caught her unawares. I was more curious about the truth about Tori because while Lali obviously grew up, Tori was still the same, as if she was stuck in time and wouldn't grow up. Not only that, just like Lali, I wondered what Tori and Rupert's actual relationship was. There seemed to be more than meets the eye with them.

And finally, Lali and Rupert's relationship. Over the years, they grew closer to each other and Rupert had even accepted her as his person. Through Lali, readers also got to understand Rupert's personality and their changing relationship dynamics. It was interesting how Lali had stopped being afraid of him and instead what she feared most was her own incompetence and helplessness. She still couldn't fully grasp onto her fate and had to rely on Rupert and hoped that he would protect her, her family and Bellua. And she was honest with herself: even if she knew that Rupert was the only one who could protect her in this life, she couldn't stop resenting him. She obviously couldn't give her heart to him even if she had promised herself to stay with him forever. All her contradicting emotions were such a delight to read - she couldn't like him but she still wanted him to be happy, she felt bad for him but she still took advantage of him. And although most of the story is told from Lali's POV, the times readers get Rupert's POV, there was no doubt that he also had felt conflicted as he grew to tolerate Lali and got used to having her in his life.

These are some nuanced characters and I am looking forward to reading the rest of the story when it gets released. Will history repeat itself or will Lali succeed in changing her fate? At the end of S2, things were moving in a similar direction as the past and it was uncertain to both Lali and readers whether she had managed to change anything.
